My husband and I during our visit to Mendham, from South Orange County, CA had a hankering for sushi. Despite the lack of reviews, we decided to give it a try with low expectations. Boy, were we pleasantly surprised! The staff was friendly. The place was clean and the fish was very fresh. The presentation was certainly well done and this would be a place we would frequent if we lived in this neighborhood. The sushi is a bit pricey but their BYOB policy made up for it. We brought a bottle of sake which they heated and served in a sake bottle. We sat at the bar and only ordered sushi items. read more

The service was quick. I dunno if you want to see this as good or bad but our sushi came after our main course. The price was good, thought the Lo mein tasted slightly burned and you could taste the pan. If that after burnt taste wasn't there I would have given it a better rating. Just finished a takeout meal and had to review...not good. We live in town an find Aoyama has been going steadily downhill the last couple of years. Quality ingredients, just no flavor or care in the Chinese food. Bland, bland, bland. Cooking is a craft and this falls very short. Two stars for the pleasant staff and quality ingredients. The food here is good but it's not really worth the price. For the Chinese food, they are about $3-5 more expensive per dish than any other Chinese restaurant I've been to. It adds up quick. You can buy 4 orders somewhere else for the price of 3 here. The quality doesn't compensate for the cost. Except the sweet and sour chicken in my opinion. I find that to be better here than anywhere else. For the Japanese side, I've only tried the sushi rolls which I thought were good. Lunch is your best bet here as their specials then are a good value. This place is worth a try. read more

Had dinner this evening at Aoyama. Members of our party ordered both Japanese and Chinese food. Aoyama did both very well. Service was attentive, portions large, and prices very reasonable. Very nice atmosphere and attentive waitstaff, but 3 things bothered me about this place. First was that I ordered a chicken dish and the chicken was so tough and overcooked that I only ate about 1/4 of the meal. I did have it wrapped though, because the sauce was delicious. Second, the waitress tried to upsell us on appetizers, which I found annoying. She was a bit pushy about this appetizer special they were having, which we simply didn't want, as we had just told her what our appetizer choice was, but she was borderline insistent. Just kind of annoying. And third - the music. Loud and clubby, and then it was someone's birthday... which was celebrated by a recording blasted over the speakers. I felt like I was on a cruise ship for some reason. Weird. Not a terrible place by any means - as I said, the massaman curry was delicious and I really liked the idea that you are served papadum, which I've only ever been served in an Indian restaurant prior to this. read more

Came here on Saturday with the family. My wife and I got the love boat. It was full of fresh sushi, sashimi and rolls. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal. This is the worst Japanese our family has ever eaten at. The food is salty, over cooked , and expensive. For a wealthy town, the customers come in from the pool or the in wet bathing suits, wet hair and the smell of beach or chorine permeated the air. Worse, neither the manager or waitstaff bothered to tell people they should shower and dress properly before coming inside their restaurant. It's basically a take out "dive". read more

I am a long time Mendham resident and the first time coming to Aoyama. We had take out and it was horrible! the food was swimming in a black salty sauce. We could both not even finish our dinners and on top of that the next morning I was sick to my stomach! When ordering over the phone the person taking the order spoke very little English. We we earlier this week and had an okay experience. The food was good and the service okay. The second time we went this week was pretty bad. The food was good but it didn't come out at the same time either night. We couldn't get our water refilled and were thirsty. We ordered sushi and had to get up to go get chopsticks because we asked and never got any so we couldn't eat our food. Finally, I ordered the same exact thing that I had ordered a few days prior and saw a miscellaneous up-charge of $4.00 on our check. I inquired about it and she said that it was because I got mango on top of my shrimp tempura roll. A few nights earlier the charge was only $2.00. I'm not cheap at all but it just bothered me. And seriously the shrimp tempura roll was $9 so I can't imagine the rationale for a 45% increase for a little mango on top. Thats crazy stupid. I could get three mangos for $4. Anyway, I don't think we will go back. The waiter/waitress make you feel like they just want you to leave and it's just not enjoyable and the food isn't good enough to stick it out a deal with the service and random charges. read more

I don't know what happened to this place. I still think the food is very good, but sometime around December the atmosphere changed. The staff became less friendly, smiled less and became so concerned about my kids making a mess...they became very unkid friendly. Also the portion sizes are smaller. Went in last night to place a take-out order and noticed that the prices have gone up substantially - and they were high to begin with. The General Tso's Chicken order barely filled the container and included three tiny pieces of broccoli - for $16.50! A $3 increase in price since the fire. I would have had as good a dinner had I picked up a bag of Perdue's General Tso's Chicken and added my owned steamed broccoli to the dish - at 1/2 the price! I have no problem paying for quality food but I do have a problem being ripped off and paying the 'Mendham Mark-up'! read more

Our favorite sushi restaurant!! We used to go to the location in Martinsville, but when that one closed we decided to make the drive to Mendham. The food is just that good! The rolls are enormous and tasty. We have never tried the hot dishes so I can't comment. The only negative is that the service is sometimes quite slow and inattentive. This is an exceptional, creative, thoughtful restaurant. It takes its cuisine quite seriously, and prepares exciting dishes with unusual ingredients. The presentation is visually pleasing and the owner is very helpful in explaining the dishes. The ambience is welcoming and the wait staff is very gracious and accomodating. We went with the former owner of a pestigious French restaurant who is effusive about preparation of all the dishes and dines there quite often. We thought the prices were very fair, actually downright inexpensive for the very high quality of what we ordered. One can either do an entire Japanese or Chines meal, or mix and match as we did. Dinner entrees are generously sized and our waitress was very nice, but she did forget to pack up the rice and sauce when we asked her to pack up what we couldn't eat to take home. The food was average. Not bad, but not as interesting as it looked on the menu. The interior is pretty but dominated by the view of the parking, which would be much nicer if blocked by planters. Maybe they could even set up some outside tables that way! Overall, it was passable but not great. We probably won't go back for awhile at least. read more

This New Year's Day three of us went to Aoyama in Mendham NJ. They had a special Holiday Menu - very pricy but we wanted to try it out. We ordered a crispy shrimp appetizer ($12) - good not great, an appetizer order of salmon sushi, and another appetizer order of white fish sushi. What came out were one small salmon sushi and a small white fish sushi. So, for $10, we had 2 small sushi. Nowhere on the menu did it say an ORDER was one small sushi - just an ordinary looking sushi I could get a supermarket. The owner said that the fish were rare kind from Japan. I told him to make sure the diner knows that an ORDER means ONE sushi. We also had their crispy whole fish ($25) - not well seasoned, very little meat, a lot of bones. We've eaten here before from their lunch menu, which is good. This is the first time from their Holiday Menu where the items are super expensive for an ordinary Asian restaurant and the flavor is sub-par. read more
