I went to Aoki for lunch. The energy of the hostess was a little flat, kind of felt that they were not expecting us today. The waitress was nice, not too nice but polite. I ordered a salad with ginger dressing as an appetizer and I totally forgot to ask for the dressing on the side, I don't know why restaurants overdressed their salads... I don't get it. Then I ordered the healthy Gaisha which it was ok. I think it was too wet and average. I usually get the veggie rolls at sushi maki and they are very good but my friends ordered the steak roll and some other things that they were really good sorry I don't remember. I think that rolls are very creative, prices are good, presentation is good. Love the paper bag as the menu ( didn't get it but I thought it was cool) maybe i would have enjoyed more with a beer or saki but i had to go back to work. read more

The food was good but the service left much to be desired. We went in on a Thursday around 2:45pm to experience their happy hour and celebrate my birthday. When we first walked up to the host stand, both hosts seemed busy so we seated ourselves at the bar. We waited a few minutes at the bar with no menus or even an acknowledgment. At this point, we asked one of the sushi chefs how to order food and he went to the host stand and got someone to come over with menus. The woman who came over did not make eye contact or say anything until we greeted her at which point she said "Hi" and walked away. After a few minutes, our server, Juan, came by and enthusiastically recommended two drinks and a few menu items. Now I worked in the restaurant industry for quite a while and I know that some servers will try to drive up your check, and in turn their tip, by recommending items not on the happy hour menu. That is exactly what Juan was doing. In fact, he didn't even let us know it was happy hour or inform us of any specials whatsoever. At that point, I let him know that we came for happy hour and would like a round of happy hour beers. He then named two sizes (which I assumed were both on happy hour since I specifically asked for happy hour beers while pointing at the beer on the happy hour menu) and we chose one. While we were waiting, Juan returned to try to upsell us on sake. We said no thank you at which point he said "well you know I have to try". No Juan, you do not have to try to upsell customers. You make a choice to and ensure that they will never return. When he walked away unsuccessful, he proceeded to go laugh with one of the female staff members who had been hanging around nearby. It was extremely uncomfortable. When our check arrived, lo and behold the beers were not the $4 beers I thought I was ordering but rather $9.50 a pop. That was more than double the price for every beer we ordered. Needless to say we will not be back. read more

Came here for dinner on a Saturday night with a few friends. We were seated at the hibachi table as soon as we got there. There was no wait. We were seated at the hibachi table almost an hour before the chef came. I did not even get my salad until I was there for almost half an hour. By the time I got my salad my friends were done with their soup. The waiter had not even received the other parties' orders. Just drinks. I am not one to complain often, but the service was just so slow. It felt messy and mismanaged. I had to let someone know because we had been sitting there for so long with absolutely nothing happening. I received my ginger salad about 30 minutes after I ordered. I had to speak to someone to get the service moving again. The manager was very polite and came to apologize, a move I really appreciated. Even after that I found us waiting 20 more minutes for the chef to come out. He was very nice and very charismatic. However, the food was alright at best. I thought it was bland, unflavored and overall just meh. Overall, not worth it for the extremely long wait sitting at the hibachi table. The food was less than impressive. For a REAL hibachi experience, I'll stick with Samurai that is a little further down US-1. I expected more from this restaurant. I will not be returning. read more

My last visit to Aoki was disappointing. Came for lunch but ordered steak and chicken and salmon from the dinner menu, everyone else in our table ordered from lunch menu. Honestly, the portions were the same as the other people who ordered lunch, so we ended up paying twice as much for the same amount of food. Also, the included veggies were literally only onions and a little bit of zucchini. To continue with the crappy experience, the service that day was abismal, so I'm unsure if the issue with the food had to do with what the server put in or didn't. He took our drink order and our food order and never bothered to ask if we needed a refill only until the end of the meal. Getting the check was also a mission. This Resturant was a favorite for my family, however, on two separate occasions we have driven from Homestead (approximately 40 minutes) to be completely disappointed. On a Sunday it was so busy that we were told hibachi seating was not available, we were offered a limited menu that had no vegetarian or vegan friendly meals. We understood the circumstances and decided to go to another establishment. Loving this Resturant we tried again, the day before Mother's Day we called ahead confirming there was availability and were told there was no wait. When we arrived the hostess said there was a special Mother's Day menu, it did not have any vegetarian or vegan friendly options... We asked if they could just charge us for something else and cook any vegetables or non-meat products and were told that's not an option. It was my friends birthday and I was a little apprehensive about eating here because I have been to other similar restaurants like samurai and didn't want to go through the same experience again. I called in advance and it seemed that they were full so that was a good sign. I was seated with a couple of friends and waited a little for the cook. He approached us with a warm and friendly welcome and got straight into cooking! The food looked delicious and although I was very hungry, I did not get antsy because he made the wait very pleasant. He drew hearts and other drawings that we requested! I can say that it was the worth the wait because the food was delicious. Let me not even get started on the sushi. Oh my god, it was awesome! It tasted so fresh and I wanted more but I had already ordered my food so I was going to be very full. The atmosphere is very welcoming and also very romantic if you want to go with someone special. First off, I would like to thank Mohamed Lakis (one of the managers) for reaching out to me after reading my previous review. He really listened to what I had to say and invited me to return to the restaurant and give them another try. I'm very glad I did. The managers there tonight were Alvaro and Jorge (the manager from my previous review). They both came around and checked up on us several times and made sure my boyfriend and I were happy and taken care of. Jorge took the time to apologize about my last experience and let me know that they've had staff meetings and certain staff is no longer with them. Our waitress, Rain, was very attentive and got our table cleared quickly and refilled our drinks plenty. Our chef, Pierre, was fantastic and personable. The food was delicious and very flavorful. Mark, from the wait staff, quickly got my to go containers for my delicious leftovers and got me plenty of to-go sauces. I am extremely please by Aoki's customer service. Let's call this Teppanyaki for the adventurous. It just wasn't for me. I had high hopes for Aoki as it was going up. There's a void of Teppanyaki in the area and Samurai gets too crowded, Benihana in the Gables is too complacent being the industry's top dog, and my favorite places for hibachi-style eats (Umami in Doral for value and Sushi Sake in West Kendall for quality) are too far away from me. I waited anxiously for Aoki to open up. And waited. And waited. It's finally here! In a nutshell this is teppanyaki for foodies, and I'm sure that many will appreciate it but it just didn't do it for me and my family looking for the more traditional hibachi experience that we're used to. The dining room itself is beautiful. The rich woodsy entrance and modern decor works. We had lunch on a Saturday, and the fact that they honor lunch prices on the weekend (like Umami, but not Samurai or Benihana) gives it an extra star on value. If you're used to the traditional teppanyaki experience there are a few things that will stand out for you: 1. True to its name, the "spinning salad" included in the meal is a salad that is prepared tableside, tossed as it spins in a silver bowl rotating on a base. It looks good, and it's the same ginger dressing you know and love. The mix of spring and romaine greens are a twist from the iceberg lettuce they use at most places, but that's one of the many foodie-centric tweaks you get at Aoki. Maybe it was just me, but I could've used more ginger dressing in my portion. 2. The fried rice also isn't the decadent side that artery-clogging patrons douse in the creamy white sauce at other places. This is billed as "healthy" fried rice, and it shows. It's not just white rice but a combo of jasmine rice, brown rice, and what's called "Chinese Black Forbidden" rice. There are also some noodles tossed into the mix, giving it a different general texture. Maybe it was just our chef, but he was very light on the garlic butter, making this a colorful yet less unhealthy version of the fried rice staple served elsewhere. Maybe I'll get used to it if we return, but it's not the rich side that makes "double fried rice" such a common phrase at Samurai. 3. Another foodie tweak is when it comes to the veggies. The sliced carrots that everyone else serves? Well, here it's sweet potato. It has the same color, and sweet potato fans will be high-fiving one another at the sight. Me? I'm Bugs Bunny hoping for a carrot instead. Our chef also didn't have the peppy exhibitionist personality that you see in many teppanyaki chefs. It wasn't much of a show. Unlike Kobe and Umami, those onion volcanos don't breathe fire. That's how it is at Benihana, but I figured this magnetic upstart with windows with everyone in the new Dadeland wing peering in would benefit from flashes of fire every now and then or flashier showmanship. The chef working the other table also seemed a bit dry on the patter. I hope that's not being coached. I want the fire volcano, the shrimp tails flying into chef hats and pockets, and the hokey "egg roll" and "butter fly" puns. If I'm just watching someone cook it gets awkward. The quality of the meats (chicken and strip steak in my case) joins the decor and the lunch menu value as the three stars in my review. My wife thought her chicken was a bit undercooked and gummy, but mine (which admittedly stayed on about 3-5 minutes longer) was perfect and juicy. The strip steak also had robust flavor, or maybe that was just the kick coming out after the otherwise bland fried "Inaka" rice. The place just opened so I will probably give it another shot in a few weeks. The pedigree is too good -- not just the Aoki name, but the ownership/management group that also watches over the top-notch Doraku sushi eatery in Brickell -- for it not to improve. However, I have to be honest and leave it three stars for now. read more

Charmingly decorated and inviting waitstaff ushered us to a table - I loved the design of the chopstick wrappers and the furniture. The lunch specials were awesome for both food and drink. We had $4 beers and a $5 tuna poke salad that had TONS of tuna! For entrees, we had the spicy pork and bulgogi bowl. The bulgogi was not super authentic, but still tasty! A Mediocre Experience Had dinner last night and the service was dreadful had to ask for everything (menus, silverware, plates, WATER!) and we were greeted by our waiter with the question that drives me crazy when it's the first thing uttered when you arrive to restaurant: "are you guys ready to order?" Meanwhile, they hadn't even set the table and brought menus. The manager was seen just walking around not once did I see him greet any customers or check on tables. Food Had a cocktail, I can't recall the name but I it had cucumber in it. It was mostly syrup and you barely tasted any alcohol. The mighty warrior roll had a taste of your usual tempura soaked cream cheese roll (nothing special). The pig ears were a sad mini plate, weren't bad but they give less than a handful. Had the tuna rice bowl, it literally that RICE. It came with a small amount of tuna and cucumber, that was it. The food wasn't the worst thing in the world but it's nothing special. You can get better and more affordable at most mom and pop sushi joints around town. Conclusion The place is nicely put together sort of Epcotish (Disney reference). The service was way off not a memorable experience. Food was average. All in all you have better options a few footsteps away. Earls and Cheesecake Factory aren't even in the same stratosphere when it comes to food and service. Do you and your party a favor take the walk even if you have to wait a bit longer. read more

This is review has been LONG due. I've been to Aoki about twice when they first opened in Dadeland about 4-5 years go; fast forward to last week Thursday's lunch date with one of my favorite coworkers and I must say that my impressions are still the same: INCREDIBLE. Where do I even begin? I'm all for a good seat at the bar so when we walked in, we immediately made a bee line straight to the back. Two other gentlemen were already upfront and center, but no bother, we love a good lunch party so additional company at the bar is always welcomed. Our bartender Horacio (we'll come back to him later) presented us with our menus as we looked over the selection choice. I was already in a sushi mood so it was a no brainer for me. I ordered the Deluxe Spicy Tuna Roll & the Citrus Wahoo Roll (BOTH I'm happy hour so woot woot & the fact that happy hour starts at 10am....10 o'clock in the MORNING people! Can we get an amen or can we get an AMEN!) and my colleague ordered some form of hibachi entree that was absolutely DELECTABLE. The service was quick, the food was FRESH, the ambience was relaxing and Horacio was EXCELLENT. After engaging in wonderful conversation during our lunch, we decided to order the Walnut Brownie Tempura for dessert and when I say BOMB?! Now mind you, I'm not a big chocolate fan, but those brownies were in Twinkie form and fried to perfection. The vanilla ice cereal and caramel drizzle to top it off was pure bliss, but the brownie itself stole the show! Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, Horacio served us the overflow of a delicious lychee martini that he concocted, and once again, I was left speechless. My daughter was having a major Samurai craving on a Friday night, but if any of you have been to Samurai at anytime you know the wait can be eternal - so she suggested that we go to the new "Steve Aoki" place in Dadeland (yeah she's 17 LOL)... We went to Aoki at about 8:00 pm on a Friday night and we were sat immediately. Our server was very gracious and informative whilst she took our orders. When we have gone to Samurai in the past we have always shared our plates and was concerned that they would not allow the same arrangement her, but luckily that was not an issue so my so my two daughters were able to share one order and my husband and I were able to share an order of the Steak, Chicken, and Shrimp. Our chef David was GREAT - he was funny and communicative and very outgoing - I remember feeling bad for the chef at the table right next to us because no one at that table was even paying attention to him - but again our chef was GREAT and the food was good. To be completely honest for the most part the food was very similar to that of Samurai or Benihana but the wait is much more acceptable - looks like this will be my to go place when ever I am having a teppanyaki craving (or my daughter does) we'll probablt come here... read more

Aoki was a "high three star" for me, and really was a pleasant surprise. I was initially dubious of eating mall teppanyaki (a/k/a hibachi, a/k/a cook on the table), but the result was actually pretty good. I had a combination of the lobster tail and steak, which came with rice and vegetables also cooked on the grill, as well as a ginger salad. Most of this was pretty good, though the lobster stood out as excellent. Happily, there is a weekday special for the lobster. Great service, including from the chef. Though there is a bit less showmanship than at many cook on the table restaurants (i.e., no shooting flames, no onion tower, lacking in these gimmicks). Definitely worth trying. If I was eating at the Dadeland mall and was going to a sit down restaurant, I think it would almost certainly be Aoki. read more

Overall, Aoki Teppanyaki isn't anything special. Their food is average at best and their customer service isn't great. What Aoki has going for it is its ambiance and the it's chefs, well at least the one who cooked for us. Aoki is conveniently located near the valet parking; which is inexpensive and less than a minute walk to the restaurant. I was able to call ahead and make reservations; which is great as some hibachis do not allow reservations. I like to be punctual so I get there 10 minutes early. I walk to the hostess and tell her about my reservations. I was told I couldn't sit down until everyone on the party was present. It was a Monday at 8pm and nobody else was waiting, my party size was only 2 people; including myself, and service was just about to begin. I thought it was a bad joke but after a 5 second stare off, I realize she was serious. Literally two minutes later my friend arrives and we were taken to our table. The waitress was very nice and took our order quickly. However she really didn't follow up with us. I had to wait about 20 minutes before I grabbed her attention and after that I only saw her again when she brought the check. On the other hand, the chef was great. He did some cool tricks that you typically see at other hibachis but he didn't say any of the corny jokes... like when they ask if you want to see a butterfly and then they throw a slab of butter in the air. The chef's knife / spatula and fork work was impressive and the food tasted fine. It was good but nothing special. The best part of the night was spending time with my date. Really nice and modern ambience inside the restaurant. The miso soup was a bit interesting - they put carrots and potatoes inside, which was definitely a new twist. I tried their bunnosake aoki, which consists of tuna, salmon, shrimp, crab, avocado rolled rice-less and fried with panko, finished with spicy aioli, eel sauce, garlic aioli, and masago. So we where going to Benihana when my mother in-law said "why don't we go to that new Benihana place (Aoki) in Dadeland?" I say, "Sure lets give it a try!" From here I will call Benihana 'B' First impressions: very nice decorations, clean and light & airy as apposed to B... but I started getting that feeling that it was going to be different than what I have known all my life. We where 6 and unlike B they sat us right away (no waiting to fill the table) point awarded. Our waitress was nice and took our orders straight forward... But there was one issue... B is known for their fried rice... I could live off the stuff. But Aoki makes their rice a bit different using 4 types of grains including forbidden rice which my kids like... So and this is the only issue I found... They need to provide a kids fired rice with just one grain... I know, I know let them try it... But we all know that it can be difficult. Anyway, Salad was freshly made In front of us... Nice cold and crisp! Add another point.. Rice was surprisingly good! We move on to main meal; steak, chicken, shrimp and veggies... If you have been to B it is the same preparation with one exception... It looks, smells and taste healthy... The chicken actually taste like chicken! After we filled our bellies we had the tempura walnut browny with vanilla ice-cream... Yummy! Great time, good experience, a bit on the high side, cost wise... Figure $27 per person. I have been to Aoki on two occasions- one for hibachi, the second happy hour at an outside table. I gotta say the hibachi food is good- nothing that wowed me but all in all, tasty, fresh and surprisingly fast (I'm not a fan of hibachi style being that I like my food all at the same time ). Second occasion, I went with some friends for happy hour... let me just say the firecracker shrimp tempura are THE BOMB! We ordered three of those! We also had the spicy tuna roll (average), pork kimchi (no bueno! Yuck), teriyaki chicken (yum), steam dumplings (yum again). Salad is always good! Miso soup caught me by surprise, had carrots and sweet potatoes... I still don't know how I feel about that yet. Service is always good... oh! they have this weird thing that they're menu is printed on a large to-go bag, so they set those in front of you at the table. I get the reason behind it, it's just bizarre to me and makes me feel rushed. Call me crazy, but a bag at the table means "you're done, pack it up"... that's just me. read more

I came here for lunch and was a bit hesitant. Of course, most people think of the one and only Samurai or Benihana when it comes to hibachi. I mean... They're basically like the OG of hibachi! Being that it's in Dadeland mall, you have the option to go walking all that food off right after in the a/c. It's decoration and ambiance go well with the food and environment. The service was, eh... Okay. The waitress my table had rarely came to fill our water or sodas unless a person from the table physically got up to get her. The chef on the other hand was very attentive and made conversation and jokes with one another. I ordered the lunch steak. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst. It could have used more flavoring but it was also very tender. Along with the lunch meal comes a bowl of fried rice which was very tasty and not greasy. Lunch is also accompanied with veggies and mushroom, all which were very tasty as well. The portions here are a lot more than any other hibachi place that I've been to. I lived in the dadeland area for many years and come down to visit often. Haven't been down for two years so today was my first time seeing the new addition to dadeland mall. So I chose to try one of the restaurants in the area. Aoki looked so pretty from the outside I just couldn't resist. Sat down at the sushi bar and was quickly greeted by my waiter, a very bubbly and accommodating young guy. He quickly brought me some water and then answered my menu questions. I came in around 4pm on a weekday so I opted for a lighter fare and chose from their happy hour menu (3pm-7pm I believe). Great selections for a nicer price. I ordered the Philadelphia roll and the laughing Buddha roll. Order was taken and sushi guy handed me my rolls in no time. The sushi was fresh and the serving was generous. Delicious!! I was very impressed by the laughing Buddha roll which is basically a vegan roll but stuffed beautifully with mesclun greens, asparagus, avo, red pepper and wasabi. I may be forgetting some of the ingredients involved. To wrap things up, I had a great experience. Service was great, food was great and ambience and feel was great. Tried this place for the first time yesterday and I must say it was pretty good. We had a bunch of appetizers from the happy hour menu and everything was really fresh and tasty. The tuna was exceptionally well. We had it in three different appetizers and they were definitely my favorite. However, we tried something that was called salmon belly and it was not very good. Had more fat then meat and wasn't very tasty at all. The eggplant rolls were okay. After a couple they were just too mushy. The beer on tap was great. Service was also very good.
