Food - the four stars comes in here just because two pieces of our sashimi did have remnants of the skin which in general should be removed prior to serving. They have two floors, which consists of a mix of standard table seating and floor seating as well upstairs. Staff is always friendly and good is always fresh. The only change that makes me a little sad, is the removal the large tables on the second floor with the traditional floor seating. The back room now has tables seating. I haven't been to this restaurant in a long time, and was super excited to be here. Unfortunately, tonight was frustrating and disappointing. While I can understand that it was busy, what I can't understand is why MULTIPLE tables that arrived way after us received their food before us and were serviced quickly. I had to constantly ask for updates on our orders to multiple employees, as I saw all these tables that arrived way after get their food. We did not order more than our simple sushi's and a yuke because of the immense wait time, and clear forgetfulness or lack of importance/priority to our table. This was actually the first time I've ever been to this restaurant, but I know that it's an old school one. I was happily impressed with how delicious the rolls were. We had the Toro toro maki, the Sugoi Maki, and I can't remember the third roll but it's tuna based. I loved how the toro and sugoi both gave an explosive flavors and a bit of crunchy texture with the fried shrimp in the Sugoi roll. For my first experience we did the traditional floor seating, but I do recommend wearing comfortable clothes for sitting criss cross. The service was great and attentive. We've been coming here for over 40 years. We went recently and were very disappointed. The quality went downhill . The ginger dressing was sour, not sweet like it used to be. We were not able to choose our own vegetables for stir fry and they do not have broccoli anymore. The veges were premixed. I couldn't order it without the cabbage which I dislike. Last minute reservations for a sushi dinner couldn't have gone better. We originally planned to go to Belly Fish, but it seems this was more of a takeout spot so we drive down to Shibui. I called first because it's always busy here, and they were able to accommodate a last minute reservation. I'm glad I called because it was packed when we got there. If you've never been, I highly recommend you stop by. They have regular tables downstairs, and upstairs you sit on the floor. Make reservations and dress accordingly if you're going to sit upstairs. They have a pretty large sushi selection. We started off with a small order of tuna tataki and small it was so if it's more than two people I'd recommend going for the large order. My bf had the Margy roll (primarily eel) and the Spicy Crunchy Dragon roll, both of which he enjoyed. I'm a huge fan of salmon and couldn't decide between the Bagel Roll and the Pinky Roll so I ordered both thinking I'd end up leaving some... but I was wrong. They were both so good, I couldn't help but finish them both. I always forget just how good Shibui is but I'm already looking forward to going back. It has a unique ambiance split between the bottom level that has tables with chairs - usually a louder more social space - and the upper level with floor seating - usually a quieter more cozy space. They recently redecorated some of the restaurant, and it looks great! The prices for the food are good value. I appreciate the vegetarian options and that they have sometimes made me a simple veggie roll in addition to their vegetarian roll on the menu. They have the best miso glazed eggplant that I have had anywhere, and I have tried to reproduce is in my own kitchen! The veggie tempura is also very tasty, and I sometimes get the half portion, the full portion, or the sweet potato. I like the small ginger salads, as well. Service is always courteous and accommodating. We have never had to wait long for our food. I recommend calling ahead, especially on popular weekend nights, because sometimes there is a wait. Visited for lunch on a Wednesday. Apparently, after a 10 year hiatus Shibui decided to reopen for lunch. They actuall started on Monday, Dec 11, as a tryout. As such the menu was very limited; 4 sushi rolls, a few ramen, and not much else. The crunchy dragon was very good and big. The caliente roll was just as yummy but much smaller (6). I was a little dissapointed at the limited menu and really can't understand the logic behind it. If you want to test out lunch menu, surely you should offer more options to entice customers to return.
