After a day of running errands in the area, we were very lucky to walk into Shibui and get a table. This is an institution that has been putting out some of the best sushi in South Florida for over 30 years. Our server led us upstairs to their traditional "sit down" dining area, right next to the sushi bar. This was very cool. Their menu offerings are made with the freshest ingredients and come in many varieties. Whether you're in the mood for a cooked roll, something raw, a noodle dish, something with chicken or seafood, or even something vegetarian, there is something for everyone. Everything is very fairly priced and lower than some of the other delicious but "trendy" sushi restaurants in the County. This also extends to their sake and cocktail menu. Since this was our first time dining at Shibui, we decided to focus on different entrées as opposed to ordering appetizers. Here's what we had, while sipping and savoring their Sake Margarita cocktail (very delicious, especially for $6.95): - Una-Don (eel) ($26.95): Dish of steamed white rice topped with barbeque teriyaki eel and tamago. - Margy Roll, 8 pcs. ($12.95): Eel, krab salad, avocado, spicy mayo & masago - Volcano Roll, 8 pcs. ($11.95): Salmon, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, topped with cooked mixed conch, masago & mayo sauce. It took a little while for our food to get to our table since the Volcano Roll was cooked, but everything was amazing! We weren't expecting the Una-Don to come in the form of an eel roll, but it was a pleasant surprise. Everything was fresh and perfectly shareable between the two of us. The Volcano Roll, while a classic, is among the best I've had in Miami. The Margy Roll was very similar to my normal to-to Dragon Roll, but contains eel and krab salad instead of shrimp tempura. All in all, we were stuffed but somehow still had room for the Tempura Cheesecake with Ice Cream ($7.95). It's exactly how it sounded-- fried cheesecake served with ice cream. Yum, especially with the chocolate drizzle on top! We unfortunately did not get a picture of this it was so good! We can't wait to come back to Shibui! Next time, we'll have make a reservation. I had not eaten here in a very very long time. The restaurant looks the same. My party wanted to sit upstairs but for me it is very uncomfortable to sit on the floor. Not good if you have back problems. The food is as good as I remembered. Very fresh, a great menu selection and fast! The service was excellent. When my wife and I relocated from Los Angeles to Chicago, two years ago, we left behind, Ventura Blvd., in the San Fernando Valley. This stretch of road (some ten miles long) houses more really great sushi restaurants at reasonable prices than The Ginza District in Tokyo. Chicago, also has great sushi restaurants but at a ridiculously higher price. So, we put "a hold" on our sushi passion! Last night we find ourselves in South Miami Florida with friends and relatives and we go for dinner at - Shibui. This wonderful hideaway off of the main thoroughfare brought back a flood of memories from our Ventura Blvd days. With an excellent menu, and having (beyond) reasonable prices, we dove in headfirst first into this feast. Oh man, were we HAPPY! We're talking: 8 different sashimi's 8 different sushi's 4 different salad's 8 different rolls Sapporo, Kirins and Asai beers flowing like the Mississippi River - this was a gala for the ages! Every table was packed and for a restaurant doing so much business, there was no commotion and a certain calmness going on here. I loved this place so so many reasons. Excellent food! Great ambiance, and staff is friendly, the only reason is not a 5 star is because the staff was a little all over the place. The lady would take an order for 2 people in our table (we were 8) and walk away or attend to the table next to us. Just a minor issue that some people may find it annoying. Very disappointed. The food was subpar. The soup was all very bland, the was so little protein in the sushi combination dinner I ordered, it was ALL rice with slivers of shrimp in some pieces, slivers of tuna in others, and cucumbers in the others. The sushi combination dinner was also bland, and completely underwhelming- and priced above $21.00. I also ordered kids meals, my kids enjoyed the chicken however, the meal was also subpar - came with bland white rice, and a bland soup that my children wouldn't eat for about $13.00. It came in a large steaming clay pot with a sizable bowl of rice on the side. Definitely enough for 2-3 people to share. Good ambiance. You can either choose to sit traditional Japanese style on the ground on cushions upstairs or stay downstairs and sit at a regular table and chairs. I love this place. I've been coming to it since I discovered it in like 2009. This place gets packed even with reservations and you definitely don't want to come here without a reservation (unless you'll be seating at the sushi bar and then good luck). The restaurant opens up at 5 pm and there are cars waiting outside for them to open. When it hits 5pm everyone jumps out their cars to get in... it's that good of a spot. I know this because I did it a few times. The place is authentic Japanese. They even have Japanese people working there. I know this because I took one of my Japanese friends there and he spoke to them in Japanese. There are also Spanish and English speakers there so it makes it super easy to communicate. The restaurant is divided into 3 sections based on seating. The first floor are regular table and chairs. The second floor has seating on the floor with cushions. The table is really low to the ground and you'd need to cross your legs. I would not recommend this for people with knee issues and/or getting up from places. The third section is the sushi bar. There's usually like 3 sushi chefs constantly making orders (yours, to-go orders, and the rest of the restaurant). You eat in front of them and there's people passing by you, plus you're next to random people. It's not private at all but I feel like this is what it would look like and feel like in Japan (haven't been there yet, once I do, I'll confirm ). SERVICE: The service is sometimes good, sometimes alright. They get really busy so they fly by to their next destination and you may have to ask them one more time for you check or whatever. Not a big deal, they're busy so it's understandable. FOOD: Fantastic. Delicious. They have a large menu. The sushi is made on the spot (because they have the sushi bar constantly working). The food is filling too. The have Japanese beers Sapporo and Kirin. They have many beverages, other beers, and saki. It's one of my favorite places to go. If you want to experience good service and a great environment, I recommend this location. But go early, like around 5 pm, and / or call and make a reservation to sit on the second floor. The second floor is where you experience eating sitting on the floor like you would in Japan or Asian country. They also have tables, but those are on the first floor. If there is no room, then sit at the bar on the second floor. I would add that the service is phenomenal, and the ambiance is perfect for that one on one encounter. They said no tables were available even though we saw the entire first floor of tables available from where we were sitting... Everything we have had here has been delicious! The sushi rolls and fish are always very fresh. This is one of the only places in Kendall that we can get Toro Nigiri. Old place. It's been going downhill for years. Either had to sit on the floor or at the sushi bar. The tables are always either reserved or they just don't want you to sit on the table. The sushi rolls were not bad they were just plain. And for the money I do not believe it was worth it. read more

Super cool little scrumptious sushi spot near Sunset. Been here a couple times with my GF who absolutely adores this place, for good reason. It's definitely got an authentic vibe--HIGHLY recommend eating upstairs sitting on a pillow on the floor. They start you out with a hot towel to clean your hands, a really nice touch. Everything we've ever gotten has been fantastically fresh and delicious. I'm very fond of the shrimp shumai and all the rolls I've ever tried were top notch. My girl is obsessed with the cuke crab roll which is a very refreshing, light roll that skips the rice and wraps the crab in a thin piece of cucumber instead. Went last night , we got sat immediately although it was packed. We had our apps which was fermented veggies and squid with a vinegar sauce fast. It was flavorful but was chewy ,flavor was still good. I had three rolls and my bf had a sashimi platter. The platter was fresh and good but wow it was cut so thick about and inch ,which is very thick for sashimi. Flavor and portion was good. My bf also had plum wine which he loved. I had three sushi's rolls which I liked them all. Also a green tea which was eh, by far not good. We liked the traditional style and the aged looked it had. It made it homey. Decided to order some take out because I was around the area, and from what I could remember of going to SHibui years ago-- quality of food here was good... well I must say, even eating out, quality of food here is amazing! I couldn't stop myself from eating to take pics for this review, everything I got was delicious, so happy I ordered from here for dinner tonight! Got the spring rolls and fried gyoza to start off-- gyoza was fresh and spring rolls were so good! Got 2 rolls, a crunchy spicy roll and the Xmas roll, wow so good! Sushi is delicious. One of my favorites is the Phoenix roll. It had a slice of jalapeño on top. It's a very unique roll that I have not seen else where. The sushi's are delicious and they are very fair priced. It's a bit far from me but when it's worth it. The service is good. Shibui for me was a great experience. The restaurant itself has two floors; the first floor has tables and seats, and on the second floor, you have lower tables where you can sit on the floor! They have so many choices to choose from, so it was a bit hard for me to choose a roll! Just like any other sushi place, the rolls range from about $9-$12, which is not bad, BUT, my Volcano Roll only came with 8 small pieces. It was good, but I wish the mayo sauce came on top of the sushi already and not on the side. The Macarena Roll was interesting. It was my first time trying it, it has crabmeat in the inside and was fried on the outside, which was really good! The other roll I tried was the Cuke Crab, which had crabmeat and no rice! It was very good and refreshing with cucumber on the outside. For dessert, I personally tried the Fried Banana, which was delicious! Banana is my favorite fruit, and the way they fried it was so good! The ice cream was good as well, but I really only ate the bananas. ALSO, if you are a wine person, we tried their PLUM wine. It is very sweet and tastes like grape juice. It was delicious and very strong! Overall, Shibui was good, I would mostly come again. There's just a few reasons I am giving it 3/5 stars. The parking was horrible, super tight parking spaces, and half of them, you're not even allowed to park in. So it was a struggle finding parking while you have other cars waiting behind you. Another reason is because my brother ordered a Green Tea Lemonade and they charged for each refill. They were not too big so he ordered 2 refills. They did not even tell us the refills had additional charges for each fill. Also, the first floor is very tight and the tables are sort of close to one another. read more
