Extremely Disappointing and Traumatic Experience I booked an appointment at Antonio Prieto Salon after seeing an ad specifically stating they were seeking hair models and said curly-haired models are welcomed. As a Black woman with type 4 hair, I felt encouraged and hopeful that the salon would be inclusive and capable of working with my texture. Unfortunately, my experience was the exact opposite. There was no consultation prior to my appointment. When I arrived, the stylist didn't tell me that she had never worked with Afro-textured hair. I had to ask her when she seemed to look confused when touching my hair. Despite this, I tried to remain open-minded since the ad stated a master stylist would be shadowing her. However, red flags began quickly. She attempted to cut my hair without washing it first--something that simply doesn't work for coily hair types. I had to advocate for myself and ask that she wash it so she could actually see my curl pattern. The wash itself was careless. She barely touched my scalp, avoided any real contact, and didn't detangle my hair at the bowl--another essential step that was neglected. Once in the chair, another team member joined, and both appeared completely untrained in handling my hair. They began detangling my dry hair, which is damaging and deeply inappropriate for textured hair. Eventually, Antonio Prieto himself stepped in. Instead of taking accountability or offering a solution, he admitted he and his team were not experienced in working with hair like mine. Shockingly, he handed me a dirty paddle brush and told me to detangle my own hair. He then proceeded to make passive-aggressive comments--complimenting my hair, but also saying he wouldn't give me a proper cut because I "didn't say what I wanted" (despite me clearly stating I was open to the cut they deemed best). He added that if it were up to him, he would have charged me $1000 for the service rather than the $60 model rate--an unnecessary and humiliating comment. The haircut I received was uneven and careless. They didn't style my hair as promised. Instead, they applied some leave-in conditioner and left me to fend for myself, without so much as a goodbye or acknowledgement. Even though I expressed my deep disappointment, I paid and left simply to avoid further discomfort. This entire ordeal could have been avoided if the stylist--or the salon--had communicated upfront that they lacked experience with Afro-textured hair. Instead, I was subjected to ignorance, poor treatment, and microaggressions that left me feeling embarrassed, disrespected, and dehumanized. To be clear: Afro hair is curly hair. If you're seeking curly-haired models but only mean loose waves or looser curl patterns, say that. Don't mislead people into vulnerable situations where they're forced to defend their existence in your chair. read more

I hate posting bad reviews, but I had such a terrible experience at this salon. I found Julian on Salonapprentice, who claimed to be interviewing for a full time position at the salon. I've been a hair model at top salons around Manhattan for 15 years, and job interviews and final apprenticeship presentations are always my favorites. We had a call the day before where we discussed the cut - taking weight out in the back and creative movement with layers, trimming the ends but not removing more than a couple inches in length because I was getting married a few weeks later. I agreed to the $60 fee (cash only), providing my credit card details over the phone so that I would be charged if I flaked, because Julian claimed to have extensive experience AND promised a swag bag of styling tools and products worth $100. Long story short, it took Julian 3 hours to do a simple long layers cut (not including styling, which I skipped) and it was way shorter than we had agreed upon. Antonio was present but uninvolved, except when Julian noticed that he had cut one side much shorter than the other and Antonio told him to cut the other side to match and that his technique was incorrect. Despite billing himself as a "TOP STYLIST" Julian said he'd only started cutting hair a year and a half ago. Similarly, the gift bag wasn't available "because the brand rep hadn't dropped it off yet", and after I followed up a couple times he finally said he had it for me, to be picked up on a street corner rather than the salon. The worst part, though, was that at no point did either of them ask me what I thought of the cut or acknowledge that it wasn't what we had agreed on. Sadly, I have to say that I went to Phillip for a second haircut, and it wasn't good at all. I realized this after visiting other stores for Keretin treatment and they took the photo of my hair cut and it looks terrible. It became clear that my haircut from Phillip was not straight or professional from the photos. Although Phillip was very nice and willing to make adjustments, he insisted that there was nothing wrong after he spent 30 mins checking my hair cut. I didn't disagree with him since I'm not knowledgeable enough about haircuts. He explained that my hair appeared that way because it was dry, had many split ends, and other issues and when I did Keretin it would show all the problems. Unsure if my hair was really in such poor condition, I didn't do much for it afterward. Recently, I decided to try a different stylist with hair cut and Keretin, and the experience at the new place was phenomenal. It's been less than four months since my last visit to Phillip, and my hair texture hasn't changed significantly. This experience made me realize that Phillip may not be as skilled as I initially thought. Although he is very nice and sweet, he has a long way to go to become a better stylist. I'm surprised to see so many mixed reviews on this site. I went to Antonio Prieto today and had a great experience. I got a long layered cut from Philip, whom I found via SalonApprentice (which can be a hit or miss website to use for discount services). Philip has been in training for many years, and I felt in excellent hands. He was communicative, kind, professional and meticulous. The language he uses to describe the process of haircutting--with regard to the geometry of the practice, for example, and the poetics of different haircutters' processes--is unlike other hairdressers I've had, and I really appreciated his precise communication. He also gave me a beautiful blow out at the end of the treatment. I look forward to returning in a few months for a follow-up cut. Thanks, Philip! read more

I'm not one to post bad reviews, but I have to express my disappointment and experience when I went to this salon for a haircut. Sadly, I got my haircut from Antonio (The Owner of the shop) and man! did he do a number on my hair! I showed him the haircut I wanted. He DID NOT FOLLOW HAIRCUT INSTRUCTION POOR ATTENTION TO DETAILS. My hair is uneven. No style whatsoever. My hair is so damaged after his haircut, it's frizzy (dual blade) and unmanageable. I I felt like one of the women in " Edward Scissorhands" when he's cutting their hair. He was chopping my hair for a good hour and the haircut was nothing like the photo I showed him. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME! OMG!!!!! I'm telling you it was a nightmare. He flat ironed my hair and continued to cut. Then he applied gel on my hair and hairspray smh. Paid a lot of $$$$ for a botched, uneven, choppy, messy, frizzy, disastrous haircut. I left the salon so upset and disappointed. I couldn't wait to go home and wash off all the products he applied on my hair. I WILL NEVER, EVER GO BACK TO THAT SALON. Was really excited to get my hair done at a high end salon but I ended up paying a over $400 for "balayage" that looks stripey and weird. The haircut was good but I am super disappointed in how the color turned out especially given the high price point. Overall it is not a good value for money. read more

All 5 stars go to Dutch! I walked out feeling like a million bucks!! Dutch is amazing! He sat down, asked me what I was looking for and really captured my vision so well. He doesn't get scissor happy like some hair stylists do and chop off more than you wanted. Dutch really stuck to the length I wanted and styled it exactly how I had hoped! I usually never go too short because it always ends up very drab and boring. Dutch managed to give me the short hair while maintaining it's bounce and style, I have received so many compliments and really couldn't be any happier with my new hairdo! Thank you, Dutch!! The salon itself is in a great location, a few blocks from Herald Square. The inside is chic and surprisingly pretty spacious. I also loved the robes they gave us, very cute touch. Although I came out the womb a brunette, I've always felt I was meant to be a blonde and Bc I can not magically snap my fingers and transform into a blonde bombshell overnight, I decided to commit to the high maintenance lifestyle which includes a monthly double process. I've been bleaching my hair for about 12 years now and although I've had many highs, I've had my fair amount of lows. Recently my hair had gotten so bad that I decided to take a break from bleach for a whole year and when I decided that I was ready to go back to my normal self, I spent another 6 months trying to find a new stylist whom I can build a relationship with and trust with my hair. I found RENI through a website which linked me to her Instagram page and not only was I super impressed with her portfolio but when I approached her, her confidence to take on the challenge of doing a double process on my hair (hair that has not been touched for over a year and my roots were MASSIVE!) made me feel very at ease and confident that I had found the right person. As soon as I walked into Antonio Prieto Salon, I was impressed with how beautiful the salon was. It was very chic and the staff were super friendly. I met Reni, and she was the cutest! During consultation she gave me a few suggestions on what we can do with my hair but also made it very clear that we can do a double process as planned. I was there for about 3 hours and honestly as much as I admired her confidence I didn't think for one sec that I would be leaving the salon that same day without her telling me that I would have to come in again for another session.. but to my surprise, after a few more hours I left feeling super overwhelmed with how great I felt. Reni is a dream! She is a 5 foot 2 power women, with hands of gold! After being told over and over again by numerous salons that they were "too afraid" to touch my hair or that it would be "around $600-$800" to get the final result that I had desired... and after spending almost 6 months looking for a new stylist, I finally found a stylist whose skill set lives up to my expectations. I've gotten numerous compliments about my hair and have recommended her to everyone and anyone. I highly recommend Reni and I am super excited to continue going to her for my daily root touch ups. I've been waiting to write a review to this new Harris line that I started with about two years ago before the Covid and when I was lost without a hairstylist. I found them on SalonApprentice. and was desperate for a colorist after losing mine to Covid and him relocating. I had worked many years with Louise Licari but the classes ended and my hair color is at that place also moved on. I took a risk and went somewhere new in a neighborhood it's very inconvenient but I did not regret it for one moment. Initially, I met Philip who is training under the owner of the salon and an apprentice at the time. He was so skilled patient and detail-oriented. He did whatever he needed you to make the hair look right and if I have any problems I came back with a normal reasonable. And he made it even more beautiful. He taught me everything there is possibly do you know about hair new products that I didn't think I could afford that became manageable and the whole process has been a pleasure. Sometimes you have to pay for the best quality and the outcome is so much easier than correction. I would recommend the salon to anybody and it's been around a long time it's great that it's withstood the Covid. The other person I would like to mention in this review who has been there for many years is John O'Brien. However modest and humble I think he's the best-talented person I've met in years who is now my current colorist. Whenever I see him or speak with him without divulging anything he's friendly warm accommodating and makes me feel beautiful however I look that's the true mark of a great person and artist. I just got a balayage from Reni, and I'm in love with it! Reni is an amazing colorist! I didn't have a great experience getting a balayage at a different salon in the past as the color was a lot more subtle than I was looking for. From the beginning, Reni was so accommodating and told me that a warm colored balayage would work well. From the way that she answered all my questions, I knew she was going to do an amazing job with my hair! Reni put so much care into painting my hair, and when I unfortunately didn't have enough time to stay for a conditioning treatment, she made sure to let my hair sit for a little longer with a conditioner to minimize the damage from the coloring which was so sweet of her. If you're looking to change your hair color, Reni is the best! I love the extra dimension that the balayage has given my hair, and I look forward to coming back! read more

I came to this salon for something I thought was going to be super simple - a trim. I have long, fine hair and I told the stylist that my ends have become super tangled because I was in desperate need for the ends to be cut off. The stylist cut my hair dry and barely took any length off. I thought great, my hair must be healthier than I thought. He went on to 'style' my hair which consisted of him blow drying it without giving it body and straightening it flat as a board. I only style my hair straight when I have extensions because like I mentioned, my hair is super fine. It looked awful, like I had no hair and it had EXTREME static. He knew I was going out after. Fast forward to when wash my hair two days later. The ends were still extremely tangled so I looked at the strands closely and I still had dead ends. Unbelievable. You would think a salon professional would know how to trim off dead ends. Now I have to go pay for yet ANOTHER haircut. What a waste of money!! After having a cut, blow dry, and styling for my Friday night, I do not have enough good things to say about Dutch Foy. My hair is both long and fine, and the rigors of haircuts can end with it looking frayed and the cut falling limp after the product wears out. Dutch kept the length I wanted, tailored the style to my preferences, and managed to put some movement and body into my hair (which is a challenge). It has been two days since the cut and it remains as fabulous as when I walked out of the salon! The salon itself beautiful and offers its guests water, tea, or coffee. The ambiance is very calming and the salon provides robes and changing areas for those who want to remove their top while getting colored/cut. My colorist Pricilla did an amazing job on my hair. I'm a natural light brown hair color kind of gal and received Balayage for the first time. I absolutely loved the results. Pricilla is very knowledgeable about hair and it shows in her results. She will always tell you upfront what would look best on you in terms of color choice and appreciate her honesty. I bought a Groupon and made a cut appointment. I thought the cut and stylist were fine. I was strongly suggested to get a conditioner 'spray' which was included when I had my color done elsewhere last week. After the cut and dry I went home, I tipped my stylist in cash, and she didn't say anything about paying a bill. I waited to check out anyway, but after waiting awhile I had to be on my way. I got a call on my phone later from the receptionist. She said perhaps I just 'forgot' to pay, but I left without paying. I said it was a Groupon! She said no, the conditioner spray was $49 plus tax on the Groupon. (Or it was $40 and the tax was $9?) Whatever it was, I paid by credit card. If you buy a Groupon for a $65 haircut, you probably would not expect a $40 or $50 quick spray to be tacked on. I pay about the same for a Million Nigelle treatment, where I get several tubes of take home conditioner. If I were told this spray was an 'add on' I'd have passed. I never write reviews, and I was really trying to avoid writing one in this case, but here we are. After a long hiatus, I decided on a whim to treat myself to color. At the recommendation of a friend and after reading a lot of reviews and perusing Instagram, I booked a last-minute appointment with Reni at Antonio Prieto salon for highlights. I was transparent at the beginning of my appointment that I had used boxed dye several months ago and showed a picture of the color I was hoping to achieve. Reni said my hair was too dark and because of that and the box dye, suggested something different, saying we should go "one to two shades lighter." I agreed. Many hours, multiple comments about how bad it is used to box dye and Pantene shampoo, and $525 later, I had a color I didn't love and wasn't close to what I wanted, but I decided to give myself a few days to see if it it grew on me since it was a big change. It did not, and seemed very inconsistently applied with large patches in spots. A few days after my appointment I was on Instagram again and happened to open Reni's page in which I saw she shared a post from someone else about the difficulties of lightening dark hair and wrote the following, in her own words, "Reminder to myself to be kind to myself, and this is the reality of removing dark color. I had a client w box dye the other day, & although I know (I know), I lost sleep over her hair. At the end of the process I did not like it. The client did however, but I just beat myself up so much over it bc it's not what I wanted. A moment of transparency and weakness that sometimes I don't like my work, but also even wizards have limits." I sent her a message on Instagram and she confirmed she was indeed talking about me. To say this is unprofessional and uncalled for is a major understatement. If she was not confident in what she suggested for my hair when I provided full transparency about my history and routines, why would she allow me to sit there for hours and pay for a very expensive service? This is akin to robbery. It's also a real head-scratcher that an Instagram page primarily used to document her work as a colorist is used to post things about not being able to achieve what she herself said she could do, not to mention it's a major disserve to the salon. I sent an email with this information to the salon, and Antonio himself prompty called me. Antonio was appalled and apologetic, and did proceed with a full refund as well as made me an appointment with his lead colorist, but he also did not fully offer this service complimentary, instead he gave me the option to pay if I was happy with the color. Today I realized that Reni blocked me on Instragram. Personally, I couldn't care less; however, I sent another email to the salon to cancel the additional color appointment and ask them to confirm that she is not continuing to post negative statements about me, my hair or this situation. I cannot return to that salon when their employee is so willing to engage in unprofessional, childish, rude, and mean behavior. I called several hours after sending this second email and was told Antonio would call me back. As of the time of this review, I have not received an additional phone call nor have I received written confirmation (as I asked for) that my appointments were cancelled. If you want to be shamed for box dye and the hair products you use, be humiliated on social media, and pay a lot of money for sub-par color (by the colorist's own admission), then this is the salon for you. read more

Payton is, quite simply, the best. If, like me, you have a bit of a vintage bent, he's an absolute expert on making you look like you stepped out of a Vogue of decades yore. He's a real artist - if you have a look in mind, he'll get you there. His cuts and colors are perfectly on point. If you're trying to keep a red fresh, he'll help you find just the right shade/balayage combination to fight that fade. I have quite curly hair and it falls perfectly after a Payton cut. I've been red for about 3 years now. About 6 months ago I went to the salon for a touch up with Reni and have been back every 5 weeks since. She was able to color match my original color perfectly and helped me find the right products to keep the color vibrant in between touch ups. My stylist ended up being Melissa, who I thought did a great job and really engaged with me/listened to what I wanted (tbd how it looks naturally curly as I had it blown out). Honestly I'd rank my overall experience more like 2 stars but wanted to be fair that I was pleased with the final result. The downgrade is for the overall experience at what should have been a high end salon. I purchased a Gilt voucher based on the great reviews and made an appointment 3 weeks out with Lorelle because I read she's a curly hair specialist. Day of I get no confirmation call, so I reached out in the afternoon and spoke with the receptionist (Megan?). We confirmed my appointment slot and that my stylist would be Lorelle. I ran out of work early for my appointment a few hours later. When I get there I am told okay, Melissa is ready for you. Excuse me? Apparently something "came up" in the three hours between my confirmation call and my appointment but the receptionist refused to explain how this happened. Note there was no call to warn me of the switch. Not even a mention of the change when I arrived! So shady and awful client experience. It left a terrible taste in my mouth and made me feel like a second class customer for coming in with a voucher. Shame because I live in the neighborhood and was looking for a go-to salon nearby. read more

5/3/2012 I love this salon. U probably won't notice it if you walked right by, but the second you walk in, you will be surprise. It looks spacy, modern and friendly. Greeted by a nice receptionist. My stylist Sarah greeted me and asked my to changed into a robe to cover my clothes then I was seated. Garett looked at me hair and they discussed how my hair should be cut. after washing my hair, they started the cutting process. I was surprised at how much detail that they paid attention to with my hair. At the end, 6 inches was cut off with layers I was happy. Will be back again. Everyone is so nice here and smile at you. I once gave this salon 5 stars and went back and switched it to 1 and would have done 0 if possible. For my color I had Laurence and I have a blonde ombré I told him to make it rich and warm. My hair was so dull it almost looked grey. If he ever checked on me after he put the gloss in my hair this probs wouldn't have happened and I wouldn't have had to have him redo (once again never checked in on me) For my cut I had Lorelle. The cut was fine and I asked her to put pins in since I was going out later and didn't want my loose waves to fall. Well she did one better because when I took out my pins I looked like a poodle!! Had to wet and redo my hair so basically threw away a blow out. Basically do not go to this overpriced salon. Literally threw over $200 into a trash can today. read more

I actually had my hair colored by one of their color apprentices, Leticia. She did a really great job on my highlights and the tone came out beautiful. Never sure what to expect when trying someone new but overall I am very pleased! You can tell that staff is well trained and they really make sure their people know what they are doing. read more

Allison is a hair coloring goddess/guru! I came to her for a hair emergency after another salon colored my hair a horrible color (grayish blonde). I showed her pictures of the color I wanted and she took her time to explain the process for color correction. She understands hair and is a great colorist - she was able to fix my color for the better and did an incredible job. Additionally, the salon is great - it's very clean and spa like when you walk in and well managed staff. You feel like you are definitely in a high end salon and the customer service is excellent, they offer you coffee/tea etc while you are waiting as coloring your hair is a process and make sure you're very comfortable throughout your salon experience. read more

He took my sad, disgraced, frizzy, postpartum oddball re-growth hair, which basically looks like I am growing a toupee on top of my head, and turned it into the sleek, balanced hair of my youth! I have been struggling to find a new stylist after mine moved cross country. I tried a few different people in the last year and a half but none came close to Jon's talents. I am also essentially the worst client since I have strong opinions as to what I like but I want to be easy going and have you guess what I want! So, while the other stylists I have seen at other salons were lovely, they didn't have Jon's skill set to guess what I needed and execute it to perfection. He is super talented! Additionally the salon is lovely and the lighting is great! The last high end, stylish, salon I went into had such bad lighting I left looking for the nearest plastic surgeon!! Reni is the best! She did a great job with my color and was very friendly and sweet at the same time. I highly recommend her! I only knock off a star because with a color you expect to get a complimentary blow dry and if not you don't expect it to be $65. I've been to a lot of great salons and this isn't standard procedure. read more

I've been getting my hair cut by Jen for years now, after winning a salon haircut in a school auction. She's very nice and does a great job of listening to exactly what I want and then doing it. The salon is cozy and modern, and they will make you feel comfortable... someone will probably offer you a cup of tea, which you won't be able to drink cuz you're stuck in haircut position... ;-) They have a New Talent division that's less expensive than the senior stylists, and it seems like the salon really serves a range of clients, from the elite to the budget-conscious.
