Anthony's was formerly the beer hall for long gone Carsonia Park, an amusement park that surrounded this building from 1898 to 1950. I just love thinking about that and what must have gone on in there. I heard the little window by the door was where they would sneak you illegal liquor during Prohibition. I love this bar because of how lovingly the massive martinis are made, with a carafe of the extra liquor on the side on ice, and a strainer in the glass. The interesting Italian varietals by the glass are HUGE portions too. Once again, I am more interested in sitting at the bar and ordering snacks to share like the white pizza, because there are not a lot of options for vegetarians, though Italian fare is better than traditional American cuisine, for my kind. I am always bummed to order a dish without the meat (the most expensive part) and then having to pay the same price, so I now ask for mushrooms or something else instead and hope I don't irritate the kitchen and servers too much. Their Judy's Salad is great this way, and the dressing is delicious! I don't want to be a pain or high maintenance, and this place is not going for meatless, I know. There are a lot of good standard pasta dishes such as manicotti and lasagne, but I'm too old to be overdosing on pasta these days. I know, I just said how I love the pizza... :-) The $2.95 side dish of spinach in oil and garlic is a treat. Anthony's is now smack in the middle of a 1950s-built leafy suburb, so it is a surprise when you come upon it. Don't worry, there's parking. It is very busy on the weekends, and lounge singers frequently entertain, which I have yet to check out, but I want to see what Kitty Wise can do, because she looks so confident on the poster. Wow, free zeppolis! I love that. (Everybody: the "sweet dough balls" are actually called zeppolis, just fyi.) Delicious bread on the table. Anthony's gets the coveted 5-star review because, to me, this restaurant holds many memories. I was only ten years old when my parents began taking me here (one of my first 'fancy' restaurants) once a quarter if I maintained A's on my report card. I've been coming several times a year for eight years now, and more or less call this place my home. The service: my family and I are lucky enough to have several members of the waitstaff who know us as regulars (and even remember our usuals!). The waiters we usually ask for, Brian and John, are both top-notch and extremely efficient. The food is always delicious. Complimentary garlic bread is served, as well as warm zeppolis (fried balls of dough) covered in powdered sugar. I always order the same meal here. Though I've always wanted to try something different, it's just so good that I crave it. Start with a cup of Italian wedding soup. The broth is delicate and delicious, the chicken tender and the perfect amount of meatballs and vegetables. Next, salad (which comes with most entrees) -- I recommend the creamy italian dressing, but the house dressing is also very good. My entree is always prime rib, cooked medium rare, with angel hair pasta and marinara sauce on the side. Perfect, and for all the time I've been coming here it's only been overdone once or twice (a good batting record, I would say, and even then not enough to ruin the meal). For dessert, it changes weekly, but if they have the Dark Side of the Moon cake (for chocolate fiends only!) I would highly recommend. Moist chocolate cake with layers of chocolate mousse and an incredibly rich chocolate ganache frosting on top. If not, the peanut butter pie and the black tie cheesecake were both extremely good as well. I admit that Anthony's is not (objectively) the best restaurant I've ever been to. The place isn't perfect, and I realize that my five-star review is highly subjective. But I love this place, and would still recommend it to anyone in the area who enjoys a good, authentic meal at a good price. I had been to Anthony's several times over the last few years. Three of us went there for dinner to celebrate a birthday. We got there at five and were seated promptly, but it did take quite a while for the waitress to bring us water, check on us during the meal, and get us checked out when we were done. It did not really look like they were short staffed. The food was mediocre at best. Two of us had crabcakes and there seemed to be a lot of filler in them. I have tried this restaurant twice. This last time 12/29/22 was the worst experience we have had in a long time. We waited forever for our food, water refills, paying our bill. When the entree came it was luke warm and not even that great. Sorry to say we will not be back unless something drastically changes. read more

Searching for a good food spot on a Monday night as out of towners visiting Reading, we had difficulty finding an open restaurant and spotted Anthony's Trattoria a bit off the beaten path. What a great choice! It's a gem of a place, with a very homey feel. Nicely decorated with lights and a quaint feel. Perfect for a date night. There's tons of seating and a bar inside. The menu is extensive and has many good options. We started with 2 big glasses (generous pours here) of the Chianti an appetizer: Mozzarella in Carrozza. It was delicious! We then moved onto entrees: Eggplant Parmesan for me and Linguini alla Caprese for my friend. It was not my favorite Eggplant Parm I've had and it was bit heavy for me. It was more of a Lasagna style than other Eggplant Parm I have tried. My friend had good reviews for the Linguini. I would definitely recommend this spot to others and return to try something new! read more

Took my mother and family there yesterday to honor my mother for Mothers day and I could not have been more pleased. Service was top notch. Matt, our waiter, was on it. The hostesses were friendly and very helpful. The food! The food was perfect. I am Italian and I grew up eating good food. You will not be disappointed. We are regulars at Anthony's, but last night's meal was one to rave about. Kelly and I shared entrees. Kelly ordered the Mezzelune ai Funghi Selvatici (homemade pasta stuffed with wild mushrooms tossed with Parmigiano cheese and a hint of cream) and I ordered the Soffritto di Maiale alla Carifana (braised pancetta and pork rib with Aglainaico red wine, spicy chili pepper and house cured sweet red bell peppers in vinegar). This is the first we tried either dish, and both were amazing!!! Even better when paired together and shared. Wow, wow, wow!!! Excellent price point as well. The relaxed yet energetic vibe of this restaurant is sublime. And Anthony's main dining room now has brand new windows that open to fresh outside air, and they have artfully hung plexiglass shields between the tables. Unfortunately, while we have had good experiences in the past, I was served a grossly overcooked filet first, and then, brought a severely undercooked filet. The manager could not manage to come to our table. Instead, she sent the hardworking waitress to address our concerns. The waitress received an appropriate tip; however, this restaurant does not does receive our endorsement. Such a disappointment. I've been coming here periodically since approximately 2005 and continue to be impressed with Anthony's. Food quality is excellent and consistent. Veal dishes (including the Veal ala Anthony) are top-notch. Excellent wine list and professional service each and every time I've been there. They are one of the few establishments that offer genuine bleu cheese dressing! If you've been around you can definately tell the difference. Highly recommended. read more

I have been coming to Anthony's since I was very little. I stopped going for a few years because of college and what have you but I recently went back and was not disappointed. Their food is amazing. I absolutely adore their Italian Wedding soup and I find their pasta to always be fresh and tasty. My only complaint is that the restaurant has literally not changed since I was 6 years old (which is almost 20 years ago). The overall appearance of the place can make it seem a bit dusty and old, but it isn't dirty. I would recommend sitting at the bar and getting a fabulous martini. read more

Definitely a diamond in the rough of Berks County. The neon signs and location in a strip mall may be a turn off but once you get inside you are in for a treat. The decor is elegant and the menu is traditional italian with offerings such as involtini, polpette, and braciole, Although, I thought the Tuna Wasabi was out of place. To my delight, my meal began with my server presenting me with fresh bread and an olive oil with fresh herb dipping sauce. I then ordered the chicken livers wrapped in bacon. Superb though the honey dijon sauce was disappointing. For the main course, I ordered the brick oven pizza with artichokes (something I have not had since my last trip to Tuscany). With a menu this extensive, I'm sure you are thinking, why? But, just know, that you would give in too if you smelled the aroma emanating from that brick oven. Service was exceptional. He checked in on me the appropriate amount of times, offered me fresh pepper for my salad, and recommended a fabulous dessert - the Limoncello sorbet. Patrons and staff were all friendly and attentive. There was also an option for outdoor seating; however, the green plastic chairs were quite lackluster. The bruschetta was the only part of the meal that was good. The big square pizza my son had was loaded with cheese, but the sauce was bland and had no hint of Italian seasoning. The sea scallops were severely undercooked. The Caesar salad was equally bland with way too many store bought croutons. My wife had rare tuna that was overcooked and dry. Some pieces were cooked the entire way through. The peanut butter pie was great, but not made on site. I had a bite of my mom's clams casino. It had some strong vinegar taste. Some of my family loves this place but I'm still underwhelmed. It's cozy - almost intimate - and the service is wonderful but I've had better Italian food at Olive Garden and for far less coin. It doesn't help that I'd rather cook Italian food than eat it and I resent any place that charges this much for simple food made with inexpensive ingredients. Based on years of fantastic food and excellent reputation, we planned a family luncheon after a funeral at Anthony's. With both the owner/manager and their "go to" Erica, plus the other staff, we were given continued excellent customer service through inquiry to event completion. Extreme attention to detail, excellent food, perfect atmosphere, and continued timely follow ups for each stage of the planning. Highly recommend! We're spot on with another recent post. We went yesterday for Valentine's Day. The lobster bisque was awesome which made us very excited for the salad and entree. As described in another post, my wife's salad. Was Drenched in ranch. The lettuce wasn't crisp. But our disappointment was with the entrees. I had the chicken parm and it was bland. My wife said the same about the veal parmigiana. Not bad but not good. The sauce was bland as well. . We expected the entrees to be better based on the reputation and longevity of this restaurant. I sort of regret not saying anything to our waiter Matt, who did a great job taking care of us and surrounding tables. I don't think we'll be going back. read more

I had eaten here a few years ago and was extremely disappointed however went back for a work event and was very happy with the difference. The service was excellent! The food and drinks were served quickly and the flavors were on point. The only negative was the salad just kind of bland. Now for the excellent food we had most of the appetizers and all of them rocked my favorite was the charcuterie plate and the fried mozzarella!! For diner I had the veal chops never had then the way they were cooked but it was awesome! The desert was on point as well the chocolate bourbon pecan pie was amazing! I will go back again read more

We can always count on an excellent meal at Anthony's! In fact, it's a tradition for my husband and I to stop at Anthony's after we file our taxes, as our reward :) I've never written a review for Anthony's but felt this was overdue. My daughters, grandson (toddler!) and I went there this past weekend. I checked first to see if they had a children's menu, which they do. Our server was very attentive and professional. All of our meals were delicious, beautifully presented, and delivered in a timely fashion. I think it's important to note that even though the dining room was completely full and they were very busy, we never once felt neglected. The scallops were huge and so tender (one of my favorites at Anthony's), and my one daughter remarked about how delicious her crab cake was, pleasantly surprised that there wasn't any filler. The baby enjoyed his homemade ravioli, and my other daughter loved the candy-wrapper pasta with short rib filling, although felt the pasta was a little too thick. Creme brulee and pineapple bread pudding (amazing!) were the finishing touches to our meal. A few points: It is one of the few places that still give you the extra shaker of martini when you order a Cosmopolitan. Their menu is extensive; I mean, huge, and they always have specials and new additions to the menu. The pasta and breads are homemade, not from a box; everything is fresh. When you first sit down to your table, they place a little bowl of zeppolis ...very nice touch! read more

Anthony's has become a great "hangout" where the owners and chef take great pride in creating a comfortable atmosphere with well prepared Italian dishes with a flair. On my last visit I started with kumamoto oysters on the half shell followed by a delicious lasagna bolognese with paper thin noodles. My wife had a perfectly cooked filet mignon . If you love spiderwebs, dust and dirt everywhere, and enjoy the company of dead bugs on windowsills while you dine by the window, this just might be the place for you and your gecko. Clearly nobody cares about this dark dank dirty establishment, especially the understaffed waitstaff who get particularly salty when you inform them that you don't like burnt and curdled Alfredo sauce on your underdone pasta. The owners would be better off shuttering the place rather than continually humiliating themselves. If you insist on eating here anyway, do yourself a favor and resist the urge to take a peak through the kitchen door windows. read more
