Is it good? Hell yeah! #2 in the country? I doubt it. I make my own ice cream (thank you David Leibovitz) and while I'm not a pro, it tastes just as good as this place. Tried the pistachio ice cream which was very good. Creamy, nice pistachio flavor and fresh toasted pistachio nuts. Also tried the strawberry sorbet which was also on point. Refreshing, smooth and flavorful. read more

An's serves some of the best gelato I've ever had! They have a rotating set of 7 flavors that are updated frequently. Every flavor knocked it out of the park! We started our visit with a complimentary tasting flight. We were helped by Sondra, who gave each member in our party a taste of each of the 7 flavors (+ a palate cleanser flavor), alongside a description of the ingredients and flavor profiles. Sondra was incredibly knowledgeable and kind. All of the flavors were fantastic, but we ended up getting strawhat (mango & passion fruit), leather (brown butter & chocolate chip cookies), ascot (mint & chocolate cookies), and visor (roasted pistachio). I was especially impressed by the freshness of the mint flavor in the ascot. Overall, the shop had a great ambiance, yummy gelato, and was a fun experience for the whole family! read more

My third time back at An's in the span of one week lol! I obviously had to bring my friend here who was visiting (she's never had gelato before!) and we split a large-sized straw hat and leather. The employee was kind enough to split it into two cups too! The large size is perfect for two people. Strawhat had the perfect sour and sweet taste from the passionfruit and mango. I loved the chocolate chip cookie chunks from the leather gelato too. I love how smooth the gelato tastes and how fresh the ingredients are!! read more

The pistachio gelato was surprising my favorite. That's not a normal go to flavor for me, but the staff member gave me a "sample tour" since it was my first time there and that was hands down my fav! The theme and decor is adorable "stylish and sweet". read more

We are obsessed with this place. Incredible, unique, well balanced flavors. And the BEST waffle cones on the market. Flavor tours can make the line super long, so if you can, try coming off peak hours (though it's worth the wait!) Tonight was our first time being helped by Emily and she is beyond sweet. She was so cute interacting with the children in front of us and was so polite and helpful to us. We've always had great customer service here but she's above and beyond read more

Best gelato in San Diego hands down! When I had my husband try it he even said it is the best gelato he ever tasted in his life. I don't remember what I all tasted but it is definitely up there for me. We get a "tour" of available flavors every time we go. And it changes every month. We gravitate towards the pistachio one and the tiramisu (visor and fedora), if available. But honestly all flavors are good and full of texture. I especially love the ROASTED pistachios and if they fold in cookies or cakes in there. I have been to other gelato places and they all taste the same with no texture... Everyone who served us have been quick and friendly. Decor is awesome with all the colorful hats! We drive 30 mins away with a cooler and ice block to take pints home. They don't have ice so that's my piece of advice to prevent melting on the way home. Honestly it is a better deal taking a pint home. But sometimes we eat a cone and purchase a pint later. :) read more

I was really excited to try this place. Like we really made the drive to get Gelato here. Well the Gelato is excellent. We ordered 4 pints: Kofia, top hat, macnilla, and Velour & chocolate cones. -Velour & chocolate cones is so tasty! Just the perfect amount of salted carmel and crunchy chocolate cones. Definitely would order again! -MacMillan tastes just like macadamia nut! Two thumbs up! -Kofia had a great, light mocha flavor to it! It was just a nice hint of caffeine in my system after dinner -Top Hat was the least favorite. It tasted bit chalky and bitter. I thought the Nutella would come through but the chocolate just overpowered everything, like a not completely mixed box of Betty Crocker cake. Just a weird texture. Like I said, we enjoyed the gelato but I'm gonna say that the customer service really brought it down. Yes we got there around 930pm, they close at 10pm. But we were just doing a "curbside pickup". I had already ordered online using their website. Also in my confirmation it said that we can call and they would bring it outside. We were able to park directly outside on the sidewalk in front of the shop. A girl answered the phone and she already had attitude l. Told her we were out on the curb and just asking for her to bring it out. She told me to go inside to get it. Went inside to get it and waited. No problem, there were 4 people in front of me. (ALTHOUGH.... website says if you've ordered online, you can "skip the line" and just go to the register and get the items. So 4 people done, my turn in line, I had my little freezer bag to bring the 4 pints home. The teenager at the register looked at me crazy. Told her I was there to pick up my order. She asked me if I already paid. I mean, of course i did, I showed her my email confirmation, but she still tried to ring it up on the register. Then walked to the back and went to get my pints. When she came back out. I put the pints in my little freezer bag, but again asked me if I had paid already. Obviously I showed her my confirmation email again. Then afterwards she looked at me and said... "okay, I guess you can go". Maybe it's just because I was in a t-shirt and gym shorts to go inside the store she looked at me as a bum off the street, even though I didn't dress up because they offered "curbside pickup" and I wasn't planning to go inside. Or maybe because I was a brown person in Del Mar and I stepped into this establishment in the evening? Kind of insulting. I had money to spend that evening and it was on gelato.. This is why it's a 3 star review.. the Gelato can't be blamed... the teenagers who work there however, need to learn a little more customer service. I don't think I will go back unless I'm I'm the area. I would just go to Handel's instead. read more

The strawberry!! Get the strawberry flavor!! It is honestly the best strawberry gelato I've ever had and since they've been made the best gelato shop in the country, I think it's a pretty safe thing to say. I like that they also go through all their flavors with you if you go in during their flavor tour. Definitely worthy of the best gelato in the country! read more

Today was our first-ever visit to An's Hatmakers. It was, hands down, the most delicious ice cream I've ever tasted, offered to us by the kindest employees. The woman who actually served us--I wish I'd gotten her name--paid for one of our dishes of ice cream herself because we told her we were celebrating our wedding anniversary today. (If you're reading this and you served us, thank you for being such a sweetheart!) We're now fans for life and will be back often. Thank you for such a wonderful experience! read more

Excellent gelato! They have limited variety but the quality is head and shoulders above any other gelato place I have visited. Service was amazing. We were fortunate to have met Sandra (one of the employees) who so gracefully and cheerfully gave all of us in our party a "taster flight" of all 8 varieties they serve. Sandra also explained the backstory of each flavor which made it even more interesting. The place is located very close to Del Mar beach so you can take the gelato and walk to the beach. Ambience is decent if you chose to sit inside or outdoors. read more

Super cute ice cream shop in the heart of Del Mar. Staff is super friendly and lets you sample whatever you want. Leather flavor is their most popular (brown butter and chocolate chip cookie) but tasted like toasted caramel to me. Very creamy but very rich. They definitely don't skimp on the scoops either so a small was plenty. Overall, cute place with yummy gelato! read more

Wow! Most unique ice cream shoppe we've ever been to. I think their offerings change, but I had the pistachio which was amazing!

If you've been to the original An's Dry Cleaning in North Park, this is the same ownership! The concept here is different where they pay tribute to the hat culture of the racetracks. The one thing that is the same though is delicious gelato. I highly recommend getting a flavor tour - you get to sample every flavor. You cannot go wrong here. I also recommend signing up for their newsletter so you know what flavors they will have that week! read more

Hats off to this creative and yummy ice cream place in Del Mar! I love the concept- everything from the decor, the design, and the delicious flavors. The server was extremely kind and welcoming! She offered me the option to try a complimentary tasting with a light lime flavored palate cleanser then all of the available flavors. I was the only person in the store at this time and then a rush of people arrived after so this may not always be possible. I chose a large cup ($6.50) with two flavors- the fascinator (strawberry) and the velour (salted caramel, chocolate, and waffle cone) since they were so good! The strawberry is very fresh and I can never resist ice cream with waffle cone pieces. You can also choose to purchase pints to take back. Inside is cutely decorated with hats to pull in the millinery theme. There is ample seating inside as well as tables outside as well depending on your preference. This ice cream place is located in a lovely mall area that you can explore after! Parking is available at the attached parking garage and it's free for 1 hour then you will have to pay the rates. read more

Cute store hidden / marketed as a hat store with hat-themed flavors! I picked the beret-- vanilla with chocolate fudge, and it was really creamy and smooth with the right amount of each flavor :) Parking is difficult to come by in the area if you're trying for free parking on the street (lot parking is free the first hour), but seating inside and outside the restaurant are not. It has a great ambiance if you do choose to sit inside, and outside has a view of the ocean a short walk away, perfect for taking someone on a date! I'll definitely be coming back :) read more

I take all visitors to San Diego here and everyone loves it! The exuberant staff set the tone of fun and personal attention. And of course the best ice cream anywhere --and there are many great places! --but An's is amazing. Good mix of flavors that are interesting and appealing. The textures are perfect and you can taste the consideration that's put into the flavors. Whichever location you visit, you're in for a treat! read more

Great gelato! Gabby was an amazing server and helped us with first aid for a scraped knee! 100% recommend

Love the new location, the decor and the vibe. Most importantly, love the gelato! Some flavors were the same as the North Park location but there were some that were specific to the Del Mar location. I ordered the Straw Hat (Mango + Passionfruit) and Trapper (Smore's). The two flavors tasted fantastic and definitely will be coming back since this is a closer location to me! The gelato was a little pricey, but can't beat the location and everything is definitely more expensive these days with inflation! read more

Instantly one of my top 5 ice cream places upon first bite. This place is great, the portions are extremely generous and the flavors are unique and flavorful. Fun fact: USA Today listed them as one of the top 10 ice cream joints in America. That award is well-deserved. I tried the "leather" flavor which is a combination of brown butter and chocolate chip cookies. Hands down perfection. If you're a fan of artisan flavors that you can find in places such as Salt and Straw, this is definitely up your alley. Will definitely return. read more

I have been here twice now and they never disappoint. The best gelato here in SD! I love all of their flavors so it's hard to choose. Today I got the onesie which was chai, snickerdoodle and cinnamon. I tasted each of the flavors separately and wow! My children got the pink one. I don't remember the name but it was raspberry & rose water. It wasn't tart at all and had a perfect light sweetness to it. Customer service is 10/10. They really take their time with you and ask if you want to sample anything before making your choice. Thank you for not rushing us! read more

I have long been a fan of An's Dry Cleaning, so I was excited to stop by the location in Del Mar and check out the new flavors. First, let me say, the drive out there is GORGEOUS with the ocean going on forever in the distance. When I got to the shop, I was delighted to see there was no line (it's always worth it in North Park, but it's nice to skip it). I was greeted as soon as I walked in and offered the An's flavor tour. The space is super cute, with Hatmakers is a little more luxe than Dry Cleaning. All of the flavors are displayed on big round hat boxes, which *chef's kiss* for the ambiance. Okay so the flavors were great (I can't remember the name, but the brown butter chocolate chip cookie one was EVERYTHING) and the girls behind the counter really took their time walking me through each flavor. They even let me try mixing some to see how they'd combine. By the time I got my cone and walked outside, we almost felt like friends and I didn't want to go! There's a girl at the North Park location who always remembers me and is so kind... I get the vibe that the girls at Hatmakers would be just as keen to remember me as a customer if I got out to Del Mar a bit more. So, if you haven't gone yet, go check it out. Especially because you can skip the line and down gelato while staring out at the ocean. I'd totally recommend it for self care day or date night! read more

Such a good find that is on the street level of a bigger shopping mall/restaurant complex in the middle of Del Mar. The employee that was working the day that my family and I visited offered to give us a taste tour when we first walked in. The flavors are very creatively named after different types of hats, as to keep with the theme of the store. All the flavors all around were very creamy and the employee informed us that all the ingredients that are mix-in's are made in the store. I ended up getting the roasted pistachio and the olive oil and rosemary flavors. So yummy! read more

finally got to try this place since I work nearby now! I was super excited to try scally cap (1 pint for $11.83) because I looove coffee ice cream, and hazelnut is always a plus. ordered online in case there was a wait, which was easy but probably not necessary. also you can check the current menu on their instagram the ice cream was tasty but you can taste bits of that extra papery layer that's on nuts? idk how to describe LOL but the texture includes just a little bit of that where it lingers in your mouth rather than just being a crunch. I've enjoyed coffee ice cream variations more at other places like salt and straw parking: free 1 hour parking in the lot right next door, no validation needed seating: a couple small tables inside and outside, also some standing tables inside read more

You could not convince me to find me a better place for Gelato in Del Mar (honestly, in the county). An's Hatmakers is particularly delicious, with flavors that make you feel experimental and sophisticated. My friend and I came in and were helped by Faith who led us on an expert tour of the all the flavors (also, samples being called tours?? My only language from now on!), and guided us into figuring out what we truly wanted. The other kind person there, I believe Brooke, was a joy to talk to as we gazed at everything. really so impressed by the team there! My heart was set on the pistachio and the brown butter split, and it was decadent, rich, AND perfect. I forgot what my friend ordered but she fully went to another dimension of flavor. Also, the decor of An's Hatmaker is beautiful, really unique to the area of Del Mar, and it's at the best location because it's a highly walkable part of downtown. I will definitely be going back, 10/10. I couldn't get a picture because I was TOO present with how delicious this was! read more

First time at An's; As I was still under isolation due to my breakthrough Covid case, but my wife ran inside and they packed two pints for her while she waited,. Within 5 minutes she had the pints in my hands and she and I sampled the the two flavors she purchased: - Canvas (olive oil & rosemary) - Leather (brown butter with chocolate chip cookie pieces) The freshly packed gelato was nice and soft, as gelato should be. As for the flavors: I was intrigued by the Canvas, but the flavors did not speak to me and I would not order it again (I had one spoonful and that was it for me). The leather was much more suited to my palate, but I found it a little sweeter than I prefer. We froze the pints and finished them over the next few days; they weren't as soft coming out of our freezer as they were fresh from the store, but fortunately they were still softer than most ice creams that we have frozen. Based on my first experience I definitely rank Gelato 101 in Encinitas much more to my liking. However, I do plan on trying them again to see if there are any flavors to my liking... I am hoping that when I return that it will be possible to get some sample tasters now that California has moved from a pandemic footing to an endemic footing; because to pay $12 for a pint only to find that you don't really care for the flavor is a bit of a bummer. read more

Amazingly nice owners and super awesome decor. I haven't even talked about the gelato yet! We had 4 samples, and each was a lesson in flavor. These things were packed with so much flavor and you can tell the time and attention it took to create them. My favorite had to be the pistachio so far. It was like none other I've ver had. Watch out Salt and Straw, An's Hatmaker's is my new favorite place! The flavors all represent different hats as a nod to the local Del Mar racetrack. The owner explained that they have collaborated with one of the top gelato makers featured in Michelin starred restaurants and the tastes and textures really show it! Our family favorites were canvas, leather, straw hat (vegan) and Panama. Maddie our server was incredibly helpful when explaining the seasonal flavors and selections to choose from. read more

So excited that there is an An's Gelatos in north county!! I've already visited twice and got to try a handful of flavors. Because of covid you still can't sample the flavors before you order, but their menus are so descriptive that many of the flavors sound delicious. The first time I came I got their panama (cinnamon roll) and leather (brown butter with chocolate chip cookies) The next time I came I got their patty's visor (pistachio). The pistachio was so rich and buttery with a strong pistachio taste that balanced out the sweetness of the gelato. Each time I got their freshly made waffle cone (highly recommend!) Can't wait to come back. I'll probably get a pint in the future. Parking is easy in the lot, and the paid parking is fairly cheap (free if you're in and out within half an hour) read more

Best hats ever. They also bring to the table some incredibly diverse and delicious ice cream flavors. Flavors rotate every 2-3 weeks (don't quote me on that I don't remember), but regardless of the selection you're sure to enjoy something tasty. Canvas is a great mix with rosemary and olive oil. Leather is something new (to my knowledge) with brown butter and chocolate chip cookie. Panama was debuted at the opening I attended for this location (had to get a pint so I think it speaks for itself ), including cinnamon, cream cheese and challah. Valour includes caramel, salt, chocolate, waffle cone. read more

I'm a bit perplexed by the claim that this gelato shop was named a top gelato. The place does get busy, which I think is driven by the sign outside claiming that it's the best (which is why we tried it). In terms of service, I like that they have you taste all the flavors before deciding. I've never seen that before, and would like to see other gelaterias doing that. However, the gelato itself is really not great. It is too sweet and lacks flavor. The texture also isn't what gelato typically should be. One had nutella mixed in, which is just wrong. There's a little seating area outside, which is good. read more

When they use like 100 pounds of fresh organic fruit to make an ounce of gelato, it's not surprising that it's so flavorful and smooth. The cool play on hat making adds delight. Tried An's Hatmakers on a weekday evening. It is one of the few establishments open in Del Mar past 8:00 pm. There usually is a line but it moves quickly. Customers can try every flavor, but the sampling spoons are metal so the ice cream can easily slide off. I tried the brown butter chocolate chip cookie, Nutella and chocolate, tres leches, and cold brew espresso. The brown butter chocolate chip cookie was amazing-a must try.
