Annie's Cafe on Cedar Key Ya gotta go try this place! Breakfast was an absolute five stars! Late April and perfect morning weather, we sat out on the deck and watched the birds on this small outcrop of stones and soil. Birds are known as "rosy spoonbills" but look like the pink flamingos you would stick on your front yard. Enough about the birds! Service was prompt, knowledgeable and plesant. Breakfast was very good, I had hash with eggs, wife had the same but added bacon. I ordered the biscuit and found it to be the tastiest baking powder biscuit I think I've ever had! We took a locals recommendation at ate there. Best meal we had at Cedar Key. We originally were going to order hamburgers as per our recommendation, but when we checked out the menu we were surprised to see fresh fish ( Fried Mullet and fried flounder were our choices, fresh southern vegetables; I ordered the cabbage and zipper peas. He had the zipper peas and fries. The service was excellent, friendly and fast. This place has inside and outside seating. Annie's is so quaint outside and has plants everywhere. Anne's cafe is a great place to support local and have a yummy breakfast! I had the western omelet with sausage, home fried potatoes, and a biscuit. My friend had the one egg and bacon with a biscuit and a side of sausage gravy. My omelet was delicious and HUGE (3 eggs is a lot) and the biscuit was so yummy and perfectly moist with a crispy bottom. Yum, I could go for another right now. The sausage gravy was delish and a great consistency to serve over the crispy biscuit. Everyone was very friendly and it was so great to see the locals saying hi to everyone they knew. My wife and I went to Annie's Cafe on 12/11/25 for lunch. It is a small casual place run by several wonderful women. At first we sat outside but moved inside when a table became available as it got too cold out there. My wife ordered a large hamburger with fried mushrooms and I got a BLT and onion rings. The food was great. We also liked several cute signs that they had around the place. Our server was excellent, very friendly and attentive. We had a good time there. read more

I recently did a trip out to Cedar Key to check up on how the recovery is going. Things are starting to get put back together, but there is still a long way to go. While out there, I figured I would get something to eat at one of the restaurants that is still open, and saw Annie's on the way in. Yes, there are other places still open that are more notorious, but I have been to them in the past, and frankly was never impressed with them. Tucked along the side of the road leading into Cedar Key, Annie's Cafe is a ramshackle affair tucked in the mangroves with both an indoor and outdoor seating area. Upon entering I was told to sit anywhere, so I found a spot that wasn't going to take up a lot of space and waited for a menu. One was brought to me soon, and I went through the menu. I eventually decided to get the blackened mullet with a baked potato. The baked potato was fine... no surprises there. The mullet was cooked well, but either it is the style or just poor craftsmanship, because there were bones galore in it. I easily picked out fifty or so bones from the filets I had. The place is quaint, the service is fair, you just need to know what you are in for with the food. It does seem like it is a favorite for locals, though. I was seeing a lot of Sunday church traffic coming in. read more

I had a delicious blackened grouper with grits and a biscuit special, which was amazing and a great way to mix up breakfast proteins. Very kid-friendly as well. read more

I arrived in Cedar Key on a late August weekend without a plan....I ended up here at Annie's my first afternoon on a recommendation with local clam and oyster icon Capt Bobby. We sat out outside (on the screened porch) and Kelly promptly greeted us. She was friendly and attentive. Since I'm on vacation, and they have Rolling Rock, I opted for that - not easily found anymore! Light and crisp for a hot summer day. A few options were not available and Kelly suggested not going with a couple either.... Capt Bobby had a burger! I heard the burgers were good, but I wanted something seafood/fish related...so instead I ended up with the flounder sandwich on Kelly's recommendation. It came with a side, Cole slaw but I couldn't resist getting a side of hush puppies as well. I have had really good hush puppies in my time... but these were hands down, the best hush puppies on the planet. Light and fluffy, super flavorful. YUM! I could have just eaten a couple of orders of those. But my flounder sandwich was really good too, fresh. Great choices for my first meal in town. I ate the whole thing. I had heard about this restaurant from friends so this was one of my main reasons for visiting Cedar Key. As other yelpers have said, it's a quaint, charming, restaurant that has character. It has two patio areas and is right on the wat3wr which I found relaxing. I came at 11:40, and alas, I missed the world-famous brunch by 10 minutes. I was bummed, but the waitress told me they still served grits as a side and I heard those were some of the best so I did get those. From the lunch menu I opted for a fried grouper sandwich with a side of okra (cooked well done because I like them crispy) and grits. The sandwich is served open-faced with onion, tomato, lettuce and homemade tarter sauce. The grouper was fresh out the grease and well-battered. It wasn't heavy or greasy, but was mild and fresh. Plus you get like four pieces of it! The grits did indeed live up to expectations and being from Alabama, I'm pretty hard to please. The okra though, somehow wasn't cooked. I found that odd. I only ate two or three pieces. The kitchen is an open kitchen and on this particular day there were all women in both the front and back of the house. Located as you approach Cedar Key, Annie's is surrounded with flowers, indigenous plants and relics of the past as you approach the entrance. Primarily a Breakfast Spot for locals and lucky tourists the food is fresh, tasty and reasonably priced, everyone is friendly and seem to know each other, and the breakfast hour is filled with chatter of which I was anxious to also engage in. In the corner sat an older gentleman with a Vietnam hat with an embroidered Bronze Star sipping his morning Joe, he obviously he owned that table, I approached him and conversation revealed that we were in Vietnam at the same time and in the same place. We stopped by for a quick late lunch.The parking is very limited so we were glad they were not busy. They have bathrooms outside of the building which are a bit in need of update. The inside is much like a beach style restaurant w with some little things for sale. There was only one other couple in the restaurant. The waitress sat us quickly and brought us our drinks. She was very knowledgeable of the menu as to what is made in house and not. We ordered the grouper pan seared, one one fillet and one two. The sides were good and my salad seemed fresh. The fried poppers were ok but not great and the potato salad again was ok. The grouper was very good both with pepper and blackened. The chef was very helpful in not putting salt on my grouper and keeping only veggies in my salad which was very helpful. We will be by again when in the area. read more

Ate there during the Art Festival (April 2024). Some compliments...and two criticisms. Loved the laid-back, been-here-a-long-time vibe. Just common folks serving common food. Prices were perfectly reasonable (well, except for $3.00 for a fountain drink, but still, not terrible out of line). The flounder was outstanding. The french fries golden brown to the point of near-crunchiness (nice!). Alas, while my companions ordered flounder...I ordered the fried mullet. MISTAKE. It's not that the mullet was terrible...but that I had to do too much with it in order to enjoy eating it. First, although it was a filet, it included the rib meat AND BONES. It also included the skin. Now, I'm KNOW mullet. My family used to eat fish about 3 days a week when we lived in Tampa. If we didn't catch it ourselves, dad would go to Clearwater and buy fish right off the boats (since tourists aren't usually there to clean and cook fish. I've had more mullet than 95% of the population of America, I suppose. When dad would filet a mullet, there were NO BONES. You could just pick up the filet and eat. Not so at Annie's. Even though the mullet was good, you had to pick and play with your food. Take off the rib meat. Take off the skin. Be sure there were no bones left in the meat. I had been told they were filets. And they were. But what I meant by filet (i.e., boneless), they did not mean that way. Decent enough, but I felt like I only at about 60% of the fish, the rest lying about after I had removed it. KEY LIME PIE. I'm a purist. They told me it was homemade. Maybe it was. If so, while it was decent-enough pie...it was NOT decent-enough KEY LIME PIE. There is a certain scent and flavor to great Key Lime Pie. While restaurants throughout Florida serve...pie, they seldom serve GOOD Key Lime Pie. Maybe there are some key limes in it, I don't know. In any case, it struck me as frozen. The whipped cream on it (you NEVER put whipped cream on a REAL Key Lime Pie--it's meringue...or it's nothing at all) was just south of frozen. The Key Lime Pie itself was not. So it quickly turned into a bit of mess. It had neither the requisite tartness or sweetness--that magical combination that shows up in a real Key Lime Pie. Again, not terrible pie. But it wasn't a real Key Lime Pie. Alas, I doubt many folks even know what a real one tastes like anymore. On balance, the flounder was 5-star. The mullet, 2-star. The pie, 2-star. The service and folks, 5-star. So I give it a 3, since I don't know how to do a 3.5. read more
