This area is know for its local clams & seafood. Knowing this, all we wanted was the clam chowder. And moi wanted the Crab bisque. This place makes the red clam chowder, which is what we prefer over the white & fresh crab bisque. You can get it by the cup or bowl or you can get a quart to take home. Both soups were amazballs. In fact, we haven't stopped talking about them since. We wished we would have got a quart of each to take home!!! The red clam chowder has potatoes/onions very hearty with their fresh local clams it's just fabulous. The crab bisque is cream based & has tons of fresh crab in it. Checked out Cedar Key during a daytime road trip. Wandering around the pier, we settled on this establishment for a light lunch. We were definitely interested in some good, local seafood, and they delivered. We chose 2 orders of the small seafood bisque ($6) and 2 orders of the steamed clams ($9.59/dozen). My girlfriend tried one of the local blond beers ($6 - forgot the name). The seafood bisque was crab, shrimp and lobster in a creamy base. It was DELICIOUS! A little bit on the small size even for a small portion though. The steamed clams were in wine, butter, garlic and parsley served with garlic bread. They were TENDER and TASTY! The garlic bread was great for soaking up the clam broth. Service was friendly and efficient. Bathrooms were clean and odorless. PAY CASH and avoid the non-Cash fee ($1.42 in my case, just noticed that on the CC receipt!) Total was $42.13 before tip. BUYER BEWARE -Theft! Up charging & cheating guests of money, happens here! Drink prices on the menu are a dollar more on your check! When brought to the attention of management, Charity, the after manager angrily replied that it didn't matter and she was going to call law enforcement to have us escorted out because we caught the restaurant in unlawful practices. She even pulled the drink menus off the tables around us stating they were all wrong and it didn't matter that we were charged more than they advertised. My friend told me about this place he and his mom visits and I had to go check it myself. Of course he went with me, since I have no idea how to drive in Florida or know how to properly get here with their confusing roads. Anyway, we are here for dinner and ate downstairs to get the open view of the waters and wildlife. Upstairs is the more fine dining experience. All of their food is in to-go containers right now. The Gator: A really good drink. A little bit more alcohol then I expected, but overall I liked it. Won't comment too much since I don't do much alcohol review Clam Chowder: Not your typical clam chowder. It is red and it leans more towards minestrone with clams. However, I really loved the soup. It was flavorful and hearty and the clams felt really fresh. I recommend this soup. Crab Dip: This was super delicious. I don't like seafood, but the crab tasted super fresh. I love the slices of bread you got with the dip and the cheese on top was amazing. This was my favorite appetizer they offered. Pimento Cheese Dip: I personally like pimento cheese so this was delicious. The strawberry jam worked well with the cheese and the crackers they gave you helped pile on the cheese. My friend didn't like this, but that just means more to me. Waffle Fries: It was made of sweet potato and was fried nicely. But the highlight of this dish is their homemade honey mustard sauce. That was one of the best dipping sauces I ever had. Highly recommend this for anyone who comes here. Side Salad: Won't say much but their house dressing was delicious. Keylime Cake: This was really yummy to end the night. We took it to go and ate it back at the room. I love the lime flavor and the blackberry sauce complemented everything. You put your order in with the bartender, and if ordering a soda or water, you are expected to get it yourself. The same is true with napkins, silverware, and condiments. You know... like McDonald's! Found this place while on a girls' trip. I have previously been to many of the other restaurants but we were drawn to this place because of their "fresh" menu (not all items deep friend). We split the crab and cheese dip with bread and both split their special. The special included blackened fish over rice with a side of vegetables. When I asked for no carrots, I was told it wasn't possible because it was already precooked/prepared mixed. Despite our deep hesitation (thinking it was going to be steamed veggies from a bag) the veggies were to die for! I'm addition to the great meal and ambiance, while eating we watched a pod of dolphins jumping and playing in the water. We were there yesterday the bar server was a bit rude we had water containers insisted we dump them I get heat strokes and need my water. We did stay for dinner upstairs by the window it was very nice. The clams streamed were amazing better then steamers. Server there made us wait 30 minutes and I had to remind them we were there. Anyway tonight while taking our service dog for a golf cart ride I walk in and was asked to leave and that same server questioned her abilities to be a service animal I told her the MiaBella had her credentials on her collier and I had the in my wallet we were asked to leave. MiaBella helps me get in doors watches my steps so I don't fall due to knees and get my meds in the morning did she need a circus act? When I think of an island bar for lunch, this place fit the bill! Walking in, the ocean breeze makes its way through the whole building. The bar area has open windows to enjoy the weather, but also offers shelter from intermittent rain. We were able to place our drink orders with the bartender at the table, but food orders are placed at the bar. I decided to celebrate our brief Florida vacation with a tropical rum runner with a prosecco split on the side. Lunch was well seasoned grilled shrimp, sweet potato waffle fries, tasty maple mustard sauce & a cup of seafood bisque. We were staying close by and came by for dinner. We sat by the windows by the water. We started with a Florida Mule and Cold Nose Brown Ale. They were both cold and good. As an appetizer we had the Crab dip, bit salty but good. We order pecan crusted red fish and shrimp and clam linguine. The red fish and green beans were very good the shrimp and clams were ok, a little light on the meat and a bit to much oil. I ordered a after dinner drink of the Mariner Coffee, it was way to strong. The first floor used to have servers and tables now it's basically just a bar. Apparently you have to order food through the bartender and fight for a place to sit. I visited this place while in town for the Cedar Key Seafood Festival in October 2022. During this yearly festival the population of Cedar Key balloons by tens of thousands of people. There are only a few seafood restaurants in town, so you would be best booking a reservation days in advance if you go during the festival. My friends and I did not and therefore had about a two hour wait for a table. This was okay because we could explore the small town and still make it back in time before the very small five minute window ended in which you had to return to the restaurant after receiving a text. Depending on where you are seated inside you can have a beautiful view out over the waterfront. Their menu includes locally-caught seafood and we started with an appetizer of 12 local steamed clams that came in a white wine, butter, parsley, and garlic sauce, plus an order of the bourbon gator kabobs. The clams had a nice brine flavor indicating their freshness and the gator was perfectly tender with a sweet pineapple and bourbon glaze over it and the grilled onions and bell peppers. We also tried the fried oysters (crunchy on the outside but almost creamy to bite into when dipped in the homemade tartar sauce) that came with house-made potato chips, as well as the shrimp piccata. The piccata had 7 large seared shrimp over spaghetti with fried capers, parmesan cheese, shallots, and garlic. It was a massive portion that left quite a bit to take home. The service was on-point and the atmosphere in the restaurant was a nice, relaxing break from the bustling streets. I would highly recommend 83 West to anyone visiting Cedar Key and I look forward to going back again myself. read more

Absolutely loved this place everything to the esthetic of the place to the view of the beautiful gulf to the service and the kindness of the staff and the 83 West Margarita was delicious and got me feeling very nice for the day. I came in and had the fried green tomatoes which I didn't realize it was big enough for a family of 4. Lol though I ate most of them and had some saved for later. I also ordered their crab bisque which was absolutely delicious. As I sat at the bar and enjoyed the view I had fun talking to a few of the staff members and the locals and they made me feel welcome and at home for my first visit to Cedar Key. This review is for the downstairs BAR. Unfortunately, MANY of the reviews & most of the pics on Yelp are actually for the upstairs restaurant (29 North). Both have the same owner & share the same kitchen. When you come to 83 West, don't just come to drink. The food is VERY GOOD. And there's live music on Friday & Saturday from 8 PM till 11 PM. At 83 West (on the water), there is NO sit-down dining. You order beverages & food @ the bar (see pic) & someone from the upstairs restaurant will deliver the prepared food (in To Go containers) to wherever you've found a place to sit. I was fortunate to find one unused table tucked away & some random chairs, which I dragged close to the stage. The inside of 83 West is wooden & rustic. There are four billiards tables in constant play, as well as scattered tables of different sizes & shapes. This bar is not fancy. There's also a small stage in one corner. (Check out the Friday & Saturday live music schedule.) There are three retro type games against one wall, but only one was in working order-- see pic. There's limited outside seating over the water-- a narrow section w/ 2-person counter height tables. (With an open back entrance, those seated outside can easily hear any band playing inside.) There was a SEVERE LACK OF STAFF while we visited on a Saturday night from 8 PM to 11 PM to catch Fast Lane, a very good funk band out of Gainesville-- see pics. One tall, large impressive table was cleared off only 30 min before closing. Due to all the empty bottles & dirty napkins left atop it, it sat unused all evening. I saw NO STAFFER work the room until close to closing. There was just one very busy bartender all night until close to close; she was super! To be so friendly when swamped was very impressive. Patrons can run tabs here. We arrived @ 8 PM to eat dinner & catch the band. (Fast Lane has been together at least 8 years.) Most patrons arrived around 10 PM, & consisted of Caucasians in their late 20s to early 60s (although most were in their early 30s). Almost all the males had full beards-- country boys, & perhaps workers on fishing boats or workers from the seafood farms. I had never been to a bar that was solely Caucasian, & I was worried my date would feel uncomfortable as the only black individual present (other than two band members), but there were zero issues. Everyone appeared to have a great time playing pool; eating; drinking; dancing; & singing along to great live music. Our food was EXCELLENT & was prepared quickly. My Butternut Squash Stack @ $17.99 was perhaps the BEST food entree of any kind I've ever eaten-- see pic! The squash & chestnut stuffing sat in squash sauce & was topped w/ cranberry relish. Truly a DELICIOUS dish! The bartender had said I'd love it:) The $20.99 Braised Brisket & cheese Grits was very good, as were the long green beans. No complaints on either dish! The buttermilk Fried Green Tomatoes w/ Creole mayo appetizer @ $9.49 was also very good, although my dinner companion prefers his tomatoes more crispy. The $9.99 Coca Cola Baby Back ribs appetizer was good, just not spectacular. The MENU (see pics) is EXTENSIVE! Lots to choose from! So many dishes sounded great, & due to the shared kitchen with 29 North, the food is of very good quality; it's not standard bar food. If you're hungry for chef-inspired fish, shrimp, clams, oysters, chicken, & beef entrees, this is the bar to frequent! There's also wraps; burgers; tacos; croissants sandwiches; cheesesteak; crab & fish dips; oysters kabobs; peel 'n eat shrimp; steamed clams; soups & salads; 10 sides; 3 desserts (Key Lime Pie, Peach Cobbler, Bourbon Pecan Pie) & many other offerings. Bar merchandise (i.e. t-shirts) are for sale near the stairs to upstairs 29 North. We'll definitely return to 83 West to catch more weekend bands & sample additional menu items. We had a late lunch (2:30) on Monday, July 24. The wife an I dined here 2 years ago and were delighted with our experience. This year we again picked a time where they were slow, so our service was excellent. We had a table looking over the Gulf and enjoyed watching dolphins play. We started with the crab bisque and Manhattan clam chowder and followed with a doz. clams and smoked mullet dip. Our main entrees were Grilled grouper and a fish sandwich. We also had drinks with our meal. Wife had white wine and I had their smoked bourbon Manhattan. We took a slice of Key Lime Cake to go. All the food was delicious and very plentiful. We will be back. Scallop one was not so good. It was like it needed to be cooked more. Candyce got a burger but she said it could have been cooked more. Already mentioned the problem with the fries. I got the waffle fries and it was a huge order but they were luke warm at best. They did come served with a maple mustard sauce that was good. Our table also ordered the mullet appetizer, a chicken wrap, chicken tacos, and apple cinnamon donuts. Those were very decadent and sweet. The fish and chicken were standard with a good presentation. The furthest destination of my recent road trip was Cedar key, it was crowded but I eventually found parking and made my way to Dock St to grab a beer and a view of the Gulf. 83 west wasn't crowded and inviting. I went inside and ordered a beer at the bar and sat at one of the window seats. It's a great feature of the place, open air windows that look directly at the gulf, no windows or screens. Despite the heat of the day, there was a cool breeze coming off of the ocean that day, it felt great and the beers was tasty. Just outside of the window there were a number of pelicans sitting on the pickings outside and were fairly close. The service was good, I wanted to know which city my beer was brewed in and the bartender looked it up and let me know. I really enjoyed my time at 83 west. The staff, cool breeze, good beer, and pelicans made it a unique experience. read more

One of the best restaurants outside of a major metropolitan area, period. Hands down tops in the South. Chef Jordan Keeton deserves a James Beard award for innovative, delicious, consistent Southern food. His brisket is surprisingly my Jewish grandma's, and tuck over grits it's flat out perfect. The pecan crusted redfish and perfectly cooked squash, leeks, and rice is moan worthy. The Mac and cheese and the burger were way more subtle and lighter than expected, the ceviche is fresh and full of zest, and the spicy grits with shrimp- yum! We normally hate to repeat the same restaurant more than once in a trip but in 5 days found ourselves here 3 times. It's that good. (And the rest of what's in town for food is awful. Badly fried, tasteless...) I'd drive an hour or more for this food and that's without the gorgeous view. Get here before he's discovered ! read more

Decided to get out of Gainesville and see the water so drove out here on a Monday evening to treat myself to dinner. I had never been to Cedar Key so I did not realize how tiny and quiet the area is. The Pros: I had great service, my waitress was good at her job, friendly, and helpful The atmosphere is lovely if you are looking for a quiet meal or drink with a water view. You can sit out on the deck that has shade and fans or inside where one wall is all glass and has countertops for you to sit at so that you can still have that water view. Luckily I went on a perfectly lovely day in Florida, it wasn't hot or humid out and the breeze on the water was beautiful. Happy hour drinks with $5 margaritas and a different special every day of the week. The Cons: I do understand that I was at a seafood restaurant and I did order seafood (The Cedar Key Boil) but it seemed overpriced considering the amount of food I got. I wish that there had at least been more potatoes or bread for me to fill up on. The flavor wasn't my favorite also but some people might like it. Limited cocktail, beer, and wine options. Extremely limited. Didn't exactly have the tropical drink menu I was hoping to accompany my seafood meal. To Summarize: I would come back because the deck is peaceful (depending on the patrons around you) and offers a quiet and peaceful atmosphere.
