From Ziggys to Demets and now Anna's I was in the area and searched on Yelp for a donut shop and there is was - Anna's Hand Cut Donuts. Standard -- cash only, this is normal btw. And a limited selection of donuts - also normal. I bought two dozen for the office and the team loved them. I bought a chocolate crunch for myself and it was divine. What makes a great donut -- a good crunch on the first bite, soft doughy middle and the flavor and sugar don't overwhelm me. This donut met that standard. Service was perfect for the genre. If you are expecting HoneyDew or Dunkin, drive by, this is not your place. If you want a classic donut from West Roxbury -- this is the place. And leave a tip. read more

After 2 years of missing their open hours and full parking, I finally got to try Anna's. It wasn't busy...probably because this is the hottest January 11th (going to be mid-60's) in recent memory. They are cash only. Helpfully, they do have an ATM there. The facilities were clean. I bought 4 donuts-- honey dipped, chocolate honey dipped, jelly stick, and cream filled. I did like the cream filled. The jelly stick had an unusual nuance-- almost like a slight rosemary accent (probably just me). The other 2 were ok. I think my high expectations probably factored into my review. I'm glad that I did finally get to try them. read more

Ah, disappointment! Anna's was listed on Boston.com's website as one of the top donut spots in the area (and the picture posted of their donuts looked amazing) so we decided to make the trek out to West Roxbury directly after landing at Logan Airport. I love that we have a donut shop in the neighborhood; I just don't love Anna's donuts. I don't even like them, and that makes me sad. The main reason I wouldn't recommend their donut is they leave that waxy texture in your mouth that happens when baked goods are made with margarine. I doubt they are somehow frying donuts with margarine, but that's the best analog I can think of to how mouth feels after eating their donuts. I do like that they have coconut donuts. I'm bummed they don't have apple fritters. Donuts cost about $2 a piece. read more

Oof, this place makes me a bit sad to review. My friend brought me here because it's such a local spot near his home during my visit. Obviously, if you've seen it, the place LOOKS like a donut-dive. The outside is run down and needs a fresh layer of paint, this inside is about the same if not a tiny bit worse. The tables were dirty with donut crumbs (as was the floor). It was disgusting by any means, just a bit uncared for as guests cycled through and worn down. The biggest issue I had with this place was the service. First, we stepped partially up to the counter to see the options (with no other guests there) and were asked what we would like. When we said we didn't know yet, the woman behind the counter seemed annoyed by us? We made our choices and ordered and the entire time she seemed pestered by us being there, supporting her business. When I asked what their best donut was, as I was curious if there was a favorite! she was un-enthused and again seemed annoyed at my stretching out this encounter. It was beyond just no-frills service, it made me feel unwelcome. As for the pricing, I paid about $6 for 3 donuts. Not too bad at all for the quality of the donut itself, but leaning a bit towards the high end for basic donuts (since the price per donut is the same for a basic glazed as a fancier filled). Lastly, the donuts themselves. What a shame, I think, that everything else was so bad here otherwise I would have been pretty happy! The honey glazed basic donut was great. It has a really soft texture and a gentle flavor (not a ton happening, but the texture is really the star). I also had the blackberry jelly filled one and that was also very tender, though the jam tasted a bit like just a basic jarred jam. Out of my three, the Bavarian Cream was my least favorite. It didn't have as much soft give to it. Overall, better than Dunkin or a gas station if that's where you usually get donuts (which I can't imagine doing, but I'm not a Bostonian), but the overall experience is not a fun one. I thoroughly enjoyed her service and friendly welcome. Last week I went in for donuts and the same nasty woman was back. Recently visited Anna's and picked up a dozen donuts and iced coffees. Our family has grown tired of DD and wanted to try something new. All of us are glad we went to Anna's! From our perspective, this place is the Holy Grail of donut shops! Grocery store bakery donuts in Boston are awful. DD is ok and the prices are reasonable. Anna's offers fresh donuts and a simple but satisfying selection. The honey-dipped is the best, not being too overglazed. The black raspberry jelly-filled are about as perfect as you can get. The Bavarian cream donut is the best I've had in a long time. This is the voice of experience speaking, as I've eaten donuts in many different places east of the Mississippi, and Anna's offers you something you probably haven't had before -- donuts that are more like homemade. If you don't like them the first time, give up your favorite donuts and go back to Anna's a few times. You'll be glad you did. read more

They were sold out of the honey dipped so I opted for the next closest, the coffee roll, and halfway through had to get another because my husband needed his own. My wife and I are new to the area and were thrilled to find a local donut shop. We tried four different types of donuts and enjoyed them all. These babies are just a half a step behind Kane's, but nonetheless additive. Plus, the owner, Kosta gets up at 2 in the morning to get to work. This man knows all about "Time to make the donuts." he lives everyday 7 days a week. I bought one honey-dipped and walked out the door, by the time I got to my car, I turned right back around to grab a dozen. Damn you donut man!!! Next time I'll bike over so I won't feel so guilty. My only gripe is Anna's is open from 5-1pm...yeah, that's right, it's only for early birds, but at least you won't get stuck with a flat greasy donut. Also, be forewarned try not to go on a Sunday, the Greek church is right next door and the line starts early and stays all day long. read more

Some really goood donuts here. I've been going to Anna's since the 1970s and, while some things have changed about it, the essential goodness of the place has stayed the same. I don't ever turn down an opportunity to stop by Anna's, which has retained its overall quality for decades and is a worthy competitor to any donut place anywhere. Coffee is OK...not as good as Dunkin, but it holds its own and always has. Unlike DD's, though, I wouldn't come for the coffee alone, but for Anna's universe of cholesterol, fat, and doughy treats. The variety of doughnuts, cruellahs, and muffins are always fresh and just a bit lighter than one would find in a chain location. Get this...what you'd taste at Anna's today isn't the best they've ever offered. Back around 25 years ago, during a change in ownership the original recipe went with one of the bakers, who later founded Donut Junction in Needham. Those were the closet to the donuts that brought people from miles around to Anna's. Still, what's there now ranks with the best donuts served anywhere. Parking is spotty (on the street) and its hours exclude a visit late in the day. Still, a trip to Anna's is worth the time and travel from just about anywhere. I no longer enjoy my once-customary ritual of a half-dozen chocolate doughnuts and a large coffee there on Sundays but whenever I'm in West Roxbury Anna's is a regular stop. Mmmmm. read more

I had a colleague bring in donuts from here a few months back, and they were really good. The place is not really "near" me, but it's not too far, either. I had been meaning to find a time to check it out in person for a while, and this morning - after promising my little boy a special treat donut - I finally made the time to head over to Anna's. I loaded my toddler and my infant into the car and trekked a few towns over to get our donuts. I get over to West Roxbury and drive around to find a place to park, schlep my two kids down a couple blocks to the store, get to the door, and....these freaking people are on vacation. Closed for 10 days. Listen, I love family owned businesses. Would choose to spend my money at family owned restaurants and stores 10 times out of 10, if given the choice. But if you cannot be relied on to be open for business during normal business hours and are just going to randomly decide to not be available to customers on a whim, I cannot trust you. I can't invest a Saturday morning dragging two kids a few towns over to treat them to one of your delicious donuts only to be met by a locked door and a note in the window. This is 2018, not 1953. If you own a business, there is no requirement to work every day of your life - get a staff, train them to run the place, and then you can go on vacation without disappointing (or, in my case, enraging) your would-be customers. The worst thing I can say about a business is that it is unreliable. No matter how good your donuts are, if you can't be relied on to be open and ready to sell them, you're no good to me. So this was my first and last attempt to visit Anna's. I can't in good conscience spend my money at a place that would just randomly shut its doors on its would-be customers.
