Like any good kindergarten teacher, Cliff breaks surfing down to the simple fundamentals and gives you two things to think about -- beginning position, and tells you when to get up. As you get those basics he'll advance you to next levels of timing, momentum, etc. If you're staying in Poipu, the resorts will tell you you can surf right there. But why would you? There's rocky bottoms that will hurt you bad as you're trying to learn! Get in the car, get off the resort and go see so many other beautiful parts of Kauai and spend some of the best 2 hrs surfing with a true teacher. First off, they charge the least of anyone we could find on the island: $40 per person for a 90 minute session. This is usually 15 minutes of beach instruction and another 75 minutes in the water. They then let you use the boards on your own to keep practicing. Our main instructor, Nephi, was a great guy who seemed to genuinely want us to be able to surf. They are not tied to one particular place on the island, but instead go wherever the weather and surf will be perfect for learning. That means that they could be in Poi'pu one week, Waimea the next, and Princeville after that. You just have to call to find out if they are booked and where they will be. Have cash or a check ready, no plastic for these beach bums. They provide everything else you need, except your swimsuit... They have the boards and surf shirts to help prevent skin rash and keep you warm. On that note, it is suggested that women wear board shorts to keep their upper thighs from getting rashed when moving or pushing up on the board. We both managed to stand up and surf multiple times during our first ever attempt at surfing! We highly recommend this group.

She was such a great instructor, that my daughter and I fell off only once, which means we were windsurfing the entire time (my husband did fall off more often, but he was able to windsurf most of the time too). When you call to make a lesson appointment, make sure you give her your weight/size, because she had to get extra small equipment for my small daughter. Reminder to tip well if you received great instructions, since tourism is the main source of income for Kauai.

We went down to Anini beach and Fred brought us paddleboards and unloaded everything for us which…read morewas so convenient and low stress for our group. We just rented the boards and didn't do any instruction since we've all done a lot of paddleboarding. The beach was gorgeous and the water was really warm and clear so we saw a lot of fish, corals and urchins. The only downside for us was our reservation was during low tide and it was VERY low at the time and pretty windy! We had to be really careful navigating around reef so we didn't damage the reef or the boards. I would recommend doing a quick check of the tide tables before you make your reservation. There's also no cell service down where you meet your boards, so be sure your whole party knows where they are going.

I had no prior experience in kite surfing. I had a two our lesson with Brandon while on vacation on…read moreKauai in October 2010. We met at the "Wake-up Café" in Hanalei in the morning. After we talked about the financial side of the lesson (bring cash), we went straight to the beach. The wind was not as steady as it could be for a good beginner's lesson. After trying to fly the training kite, Brandon suggested to go straight to the ocean with the real canopy. After explaining the fundamentals of the kite to me and setting up the parafoil, we were in the ocean within 30 minutes. I steered the kite the entire time, while Brandon held on to my harness and gave instructions. It was unbelievable how much fun I had. Brandon offered that I could continue to play alone with the kite in the water, but I was somewhat exhausted after two hours of fun. What can you expect? You can expect a really cool and knowledgeable (Kauai-born) instructor, water in your face, playing in the Pacific Ocean (Hanalei Bay), looking up at a kite for two hours ... and a ton of fun and excitement. To kayak up the Wailua River in order to see Secret Falls, I rented two double kayaks from KWA. For…read more$110/double kayak, you get the paddles, seats, a small dry bag, instructions on how to load the two kayaks on the roof with pads for the car and tie-down straps and a map of the route from 8am - 5pm. Initially, the process seemed complex: 1) arrive at the scenic outlook, 2) call KWA for approval to get kayak, 3) go to house to get kayaks, 4) learn how to load kayaks, install seats, etc. and 5) go to the launch point on the Wailua River, 6) do the opposite upon return. However, once you book, you not only receive all the instructions, which are very clear, but KWA will text you to confirm rentals, Waivers forms for each guest and a reminder so you don't forget. Ka'iulani from KWA was friendly and patient.
