I got the #3 combo and I got my sandwich with the Medium Heat and I got the other one as Spicy Level. The medium spice level has a great kick to it and flavorful. There has been a major glut in Hot Chicken Sandwich places sprouting up around San Diego in the last few years. Because of that, competition can be pretty fierce with everyone trying to cash in on the craze. But, for every hole in the wall that cooks their own buns and has secret Chili Oil and Tennessee Hot Batter recipes, there's another 2 or 3 franchise spots that have flashy signs and paint on the walls, but then rely on store bought rolls and pre packaged sauces. I was excited when I found Angry Chickz on Yelp. I asked my father and brother to come out and join me and try this new sandwich place. Man, what a major letdown this place was. First off, it's been hinted that the food here is brought in frozen and fried to order. I have no idea if that's true, but it honestly would not surprise me. What I do know, is that behind the counter were bags of hamburger buns you can easily pickup for cheap over at Costco. Not even the large, good ones, either; I'm talking about the small, Francisco brand that fall apart the moment a bit of sauce hits the bread. The slaw also has the same ingredients and vegetable cut style that the 5 pound bags of premade slaws from Costco have ... just putting that out there. Needless to say, what should have a been a messy and still enjoyable sandwich was just a disgusting mess that fell apart before the halfway mark of my lunch. My son and I split a Combo #1 Mild. The slaw was alright, with a nice crunch to contrast against the sogginess of the breading and oil, but the chicken itself was oddly flavorless. I would think this would stem from not marinating it before flouring and cooking, but the spice and herbs should have been present all the way through the meat and not just added as a thick, dry dusting over the basic crust. Sadly, the fries on the side were the best part of the meal. Also on the table were some Angry Fries, essentially another Combo #1, sans the buns, in a bowl. The whole of it shared the exact same issues with the sandwiches, eventually making me wonder why I had ordered it in the first place. I ate a small bit of and saved the rest for my wife at home. She took one bite before shaking her head in disgust and refusing to eat anymore. I honestly couldn't blame her. Anyway, a great spot near the Oceanside Beach, but with poorly made and disappointing food. I seriously doubt I'll ever come out this way to try again when there are safer and tastier options when traveling this far from home. I asked if that injury happened during the preparation of my food, and she quickly said "no, it was after." Really? Because the timing seemed way too close for comfort. I hope she's okay but to make it worse, I tried calling the store multiple times to ask for a refund no one answered, no voicemail, no way to get in touch. It's incredibly frustrating. I'm disgusted with the Food safety. Be proactive, dump the food and remake or refund instead of giving the food to the customer. This is exactly why I usually stick to higher-end places. At least they try. Here, it felt like no one cared and honestly, they probably aren't even paid enough to. But that doesn't excuse visible health risks in the kitchen.
