It was my first time visiting, and I had heard about their Taco Tuesday special with tacos for $1.25. When I ordered, I was told the special only applied to ground beef and chicken, not steak, which was fine. I ordered four chicken tacos. Unfortunately, the tacos came on flour tortillas, and the chicken had very little flavor. It honestly felt more like something I could have gotten at Taco Bell than at a Mexican restaurant. We are still working on our Mexican food tour of middle South Carolina. Right now it's a two way tie and still need more places to test. Food here is pretty good and while the salsa is kid rated, you can spice it up pretty easy by adding hot sauce to it. Dinners are enjoyable, service was good and polite. "Chicken Fajitas with a Side of Fumigation...??" About a week ago, my family and I visited Angel's Mexican Restaurant after a failed attempt to dine at Red Lobster for a family member's birthday celebration. While I had a taste for some Cheddar Biscuits and Salmon, a family reunion and an extended 2 hour wait, relocated our party a few miles down the street to Angels. " The Scene" As with all Mexican restaurants, the restaurant resembled the establishments I frequent in Texas. The walls were adorned with Sombreros and vibrant colors and flags accented the decor. Unfortunately, upon entry, since my nose works perfectly, the unmistakable smell of a restaurant that had been recently fumigated assaulted me. I asked my party if their noses relayed the same thing and we all agreed that the smell was unmistakable. Sadly, the party continued to move forward so I decided to be of good cheer and enjoy the birthday celebration. "The Meal" Normally if I smell RAID in a restaurant entrance, I will do an "About Face" and March out the way I came, but alas it wasn't my birthday. As I type this review, I see that another Yelper has confirmed my suspicions about the smell, by verifying the presence of "vermin" during their recent stay. Even with the horrid smell, I decided to give the establishment a "3" as I didn't witness any... and our waitress was phenomenal. I have worked in the food industry as a youth and understand the importance of fumigation, just not remaining as thick in the air during dining hours, that I could cut the smell with a knife. Our party ordered 1. An appetizer of chicken wings and fries, (delicious) 2. An order of a white cheese hamburger dip 3. An order of a cheese Blanco dip 4. An extremely (DRY) white chicken meat burrito with cheese 5. Chicken tortilla soup (salty) 6. A kid's chicken quesadilla with Spanish rice 7. A Tilapia fajita with shrimp and scallops and a 2-plate special with a stuffed Chile Relleno. For dessert the party decided on chocolate filled churros that were actually light and fluffy. From what I gathered, the participants involved graciously ate and enjoyed their meal, while withholding comments about the horrific smell. All in all, the time catching up at the establishment was nice, but the smell made me nauseous. I couldn't enjoy my meal, and since I was on vacation with several places to eat at in Texas, I didn't want to make a scene. Unfortunately for me, a second visit will probably not be in the future. The food here is excellent. Mexican Food is my favorite. Plenty of Room inside, service is excellent. Clean Restrooms, and a very clean and friendly environment Handicap parking. I have been going there for years and never had a complaint about anything so go try it if you don't go you're missing out! Try fried ice cream as well. You'll love it. read more

Stopped in on our way back home yesterday. Before I went in, I texted someone and asked if they were a good choice. We are not from the area and obviously it was our first time there. By the time I got a reply, unfortunately we had already been seated. In the meantime the waitress interaction had already left me disgusted. She had the absolute worst personality and hadn't even taken our food order. Finally got a reply about whether or not we should eat there and it was... NO. Since the female was already unfriendly and borderline rude we paid for the drinks and left. We ended up going to Yucatan and it was far better. Non the less the original girl was still walking around us helping other people without her mask on still! Keep in mind that covid is at a high right now. They also had another man come out multiple times not wearing his mask. Covid is not a joke and shouldn't be taken lightly, they should be fined the $50 the city requires for people violating. On top of that, our food was burnt and we asked for our meals a certain way. It wasn't told to us until after we got our food that they couldn't make our food the way we ordered it. The stars are for the ambiance and the service. The place has potential but, currently missing the mark. As mentioned, the ambiance is inviting and festive. Decor is ok. The water fountain in the entrance would be a nice feature if not off and with standing dirty water. The chips were nice and warm, nothing special to say about the salsa. angel's is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. My wife and I dine there often. We highly recommend Angel's. They have the best molcajete of any Mexican restaurant I have ever eaten. Well should have known when I arrived and parking lot was empty at 6pm. Went inside for taco Tuesday .99 beef taco bland. Salsa was a different taste idk how to describe. Took forever to get service while sitting at bar people walked right by me even when they were behind bar. Talked to I am guessing regulars I asked for salsa verde never got it. Never even got asked for a refill of regular salsa. Beer was not very cold either I don't recommend this place. So while I don't have any comparison for this location here in Sumter (yet), I will say that Angel's does a pretty good job of being tasty. Nice/Comfortable atmosphere, typical of most Mexican themed restaurants , and friendly service. It was mostly early evening, about 5:30ish, when me and my fiancé pulled in for dinner. Parking lot, and of course inside, were mostly empty, but a few patrons were in already. We are always a bit hesitant about what we order from a new Mexican location... hate to get something expensive or extensive and then end up despising the place. So we kept it simple. I went with their Taco plate (soft tacos) and my fiancé had the fajitas (chicken and steak). We were started with complimentary warm chips and salsa. No real crazy flavor to the chips (I've had salt and lime which are amazing), but they were typical and fine. Salsa seemed typical of most restaurants or from the jar styles. Tacos were good, not a lot of strong flavor to the meat, so they were tilting toward the bland side... but overall it was still tasty enough to eat without any huge complaints. Looking back I should have asked for a lime or similar to try and bring it to life a bit more. The fajitas were actually quite tasty, well seasoned and not overcooked. Definitely an order I wish I would have made. All in all, not a bad spot. Good to decent food, with good/nice service, and a comfortable little place. I do actually want/plan to go back because I noticed they had the more traditional corn tortilla style tacos (carnitas, etc). So want to give those a taste. I will be checking out the other Mexican joints in town (so watch out for those reviews to come), but I'll be returning to this one as well and would suggest it to anyone interested. read more

In Sumter, i don't think you can do much better. Its good mexican food, very reasonably priced, fast and friendly service both lunch and dinner during my 3 experiences. We've had the fajitas, mexican guacamole, carnitas, tacos and all were good. Bottomless chips and salsa, you cannot complain. What would make it 5 stars? Angel's is not the must authentic Mexican Restaurant, but we are also not very close to Mexico in South Carolina. I would say it is a little more Tex-Mex than Mexican. They did a great job decorating the interior and the restaurant feels very authentic. The food is good, and the cheese dip is awesome! I would highly recommend their Steak Fajita Nachos and their California Quesadilla. (The Quesadilla has avocado and mushrooms in it.) Found a Band-Aid in my food, ordered the Texas Fajitas 1/2 way through eating found a used dirty Band-Aid, I am physically sick I wont be eating anything for a while but certainly will never eat there again.
