I've been shelling out for the more traditional Swedish deep tissue places recently after getting mediocre massages at Chinese foot massage spots even though those were my favorite from living in SoCal. But I was just desperate, calling around on a Sunday after getting called in to work last minute, hoping to find an appointment somewhere for me and the boyfriend to destress. They were so accommodating with my request, I got to come by right after I got off! Plus with the promo they have if you book online through their website it's the best deal in town. So I'm already giddy but the drive out there can be daunting when you live in town so I'm lowering my expectations. The woman who greeted us was so chipper and kind and we quickly got whisked to the back while they filled hot tubs to soak your feet. I wasn't sure what to dress down to but the women were so professional so even though there was a bit of a language barrier they made sure I was comfortable. The massage itself was wonderful, started out so relaxing I almost fell asleep (a pet peeve of mine I try to avoid, I want to be present for my enjoyment!) and then when she started working on my back/neck/shoulders I was amazed at my masseuse's strength! I prefer deep tissue because I associate the slightly painful pressure with the satisfaction of breaking my knots but she was intentional and focused on working them out with deliberate applied pressure. It wasn't painful so I wasn't sure how I'd feel afterwards...I was hoping she'd really crack my neck or something, it'd been so tight for the past month! But she must've known what she was doing because 6 hours later there's still no pain, no soreness, I can twist my back and neck and no twinges or resistance! Walking in we are greeted most enthusiastically by a lady who barely speaks English, so it started a little awkwardly with trying to get information. There is a board that shows $35 for a half hour foot massage. When we pointed to it I think we were negotiating...? Hahahaaaa!! Next thing you know we are both being walked back to a couple of side by side short sofas. There is a wicker basket to put your shoes and socks and pillows on the sofas for reclining. We both settled in as they brought out foot baths. These ladies are very courteous, polite and cheerful. They are enthusiastic about their work and do a good job. They put our feet in these baths to soak while they came around behind us and we got a neck and shoulder massage to start. Then they got to our feet and that massage was awesome. They weren't exactly delicate, but they were thorough and not rough. At the end of the massage they toweled off our legs (up to the knees) and feet and said we are done. Not very ceremonious either, but efficient. My feet feel great and I'm relaxed, considering we only went in to get some information and came out as clients. Yea, I would be tempted to go back with any muscle issues. If you want an aggressive muscle workout, I'm thinking this is your cup of tea. There is a large menu board on the wall in the office. I suggest dressing down to a higher standard than usual if you are accustomed to North American massage therapists. She is responsive to feedback. My aching back really appreciated that great customer service. The location is homey and the studio I was in was spacious with a nicely appointed sitting area. The massage table was comfortable and had an awesome armrest under the headrest that I'd never seen before. My massage therapist Kara was wonderful. She was easy to talk to and I was quickly able to communicate where the worst of my knots were. An hour was nowhere near enough to untangle me, but she was able to hit every major problem area I had asked for and she showed me a couple knots I didn't know I had! It's easy to get to from the freeway, and parking is super easy (except on Thursdays from 12:30-3:30 - street cleaning). She is so affordable that it really enables almost anyone to incorporate massage into their lives on a regular basis instead of sporadically. However! Don't let her rates fool you. This is a woman who is dedicated to the practice and lives accordingly; she is affordable because she believes that money shouldn't be the issue keeping people from taking care of themselves!
