Anello is one of those places where the food menu fits on one half page, and it's all fantastic, from the appetizers to the dessert. The "green salad" is deceptively simple; it's "just" a green salad, but its textures and flavors are beautifully balanced, and the ingredients are always fresh. The pizza never gets old for me; the crust is always dreamy, with that perfect flavor, just right crunch/chew, and that slight char of wood-fired pizza. I've been here 8+ times now, and while the margherita pizza is lovely, I've discovered that I prefer the overall flavor of the bianca (white) pizzas over their red sauce pizzas (which is unusual, because I usually prefer red sauce over white). Whatever sauce/drizzle/ingredient goes on the bianca pizzas is utterly addictive.
Sometimes there is a pizza special based on what's seasonally available, and I'd recommend getting it unless it contains an ingredient you dislike. The special has been our favorite both times we got it - first time, a mozzarella arugula lemon vinaigrette, and second time, a mozzarella garlic summer squash pizza, I think (both bianco). The seasonal veggies are also fabulous - simple, but plate-licking good. If you come after 7:30pm, the specials will likely be sold out for the day, but it doesn't hurt to ask when you check in.
The first time we went, we were told we were the first couple to order all of the desserts on the menu (what happens when you put 2 people with sweet teeth together). The rye brownie was good, but the star was the almond cake with orange-cardamom syrup. Ask about the gelato of the day (one or two different flavor options each time) - the honey ricotta and the almond cherry were divine, but the chocolate gelato we had was grainy. Fast-forward a year later, and the desserts at Anello have really upped their game. Ask about the dessert special and snag one before they're gone if possible (there's nothing wrong with ordering dessert first - just sayin'). All of the 3 dessert specials we've tried on different days have been exquisite and bursting with flavor. My only regret is I wish we could figure out how to recreate those desserts so we could have them again. The latest special dessert was warm, rum-poached figs with fig leaf ice cream and rosemary pecan shortbread - we scraped that plate clean (it was to-die-for!)
I haven't tried all of the pizza places in Tucson yet, but this is one of my favorite thin crust pizza places. The place itself is fairly small, and once the dough runs out, they're done for the day. The things I really love about Anello are that all of the ingredients taste really fresh (probably because they try to use local, seasonal ingredients whenever possible), all of the dishes across the board are flavorful and well-balanced, and Chef Scott is a really nice guy. The restaurant can be hard to find, because it's not labeled; the front of the restaurant has a big window and a large, ridged wooden door. It's across the alleyway from Crooked Tooth. Anello doesn't have it's own parking lot, so you have to find yourself a street or alley spot. Also, no reservations and no phone, but they will take your phone down when you check in and contact you when your table's ready. Word of mouth has gone around about how yummy everything is, so expect a decent wait on weekends (and sometimes weekdays).
TL;DR: Incredible crust; white pizzas addictive. Small space; street/alley parking. Restaurant not labeled; next to Crooked Tooth. No phone or reservations. Green salad and pizza, veggie, and dessert specials for the win! read more
