Andy makes this one of my favorite places to get sushi. He is so funny and personable. You get a good conversation and some laughs while you wait for him to make your sushi right in front of you. It's located inside of Wholey's Fish Market, so it's a perfect spot for a quick bite during your shopping in the strip.

Good sushi. Andy seems like an eclectic character with a vibrant personality. I had the spicy tuna with kiwi and the dynamite roll (I think that was what it was called). They were both good. It was a little pricey for what I got, so I don't know if I'm drawn to return again and again to a place that is basically just a simple food stand where there could be a bit of a wait since it is a one man operation. But, the nice thing is that you can grab other things you may want from Wholeys itself. Nonetheless, I was glad to try out and enjoy what has been named by many others as PGH's best sushi.

Nice little sushi takeout spot inside Wholeys. Service is quick. Great conversation with personality & attitude. Ordered poke bowl and some salmon nigiri. Fresh ingredients. Never had kiwi in a poke bowl, but now I'm obsessed.

My man Andy knows how to make great sushi. Every time I m in Pittsburgh I do make a stop to Wholey seafood market where Andy has his one man sushi stand. The selection of rolls and sashimi is good and portions are very generous for the price. Make sure to check out the specials board. His salmon mango specialty roll is one of my favorites. His sushi stand is open daily but be prepared to wait 15-20 min for your food as he gets super busy at times. This is a take out only place. Wholey does have a dinning area with hand full of tables and I am sure you can set up there to eat but it's all self service.

The VERY BEST sushi in Pittsburgh...!

This place is a MUST VISIT whenever you are in the strip. Andy has been running this little sushi booth inside Wholeys for as long as I have been going down there- and that's over 30 years. He knows his sushi. He knows his sashimi. He will make recommendations if you ask. But it all boils down to the freshest, best tasting, raw & cooked fish between rice & seaweed wrappers you will find in Pittsburgh. Go get some & tell me I'm wrong. It won't happen.... And DO try Eel...! Buried in a roll or topped on a ball of rice... I promise you will LOVE IT...!

Always beautiful, delicious made-to-order sushi and rolls with great service from Andy who's a one man show.

The most amazing and steady staple to the strip district. No one can ever beat Andy and he will have you dreaming of his sushi wherever you go

Can't say it was the best sushi I've ever had, but it was probably the best sushi I've had from a supermarket, if that's saying anything. Chef was charming and answered all our questions (i.e. yes he serves soft drinks & yes there is seating on the top floor of wholeys). Everything was fresh and made to order and I liked that he added some seaweed salad to our order. I was confused by the mint leaf that we found in the dynamite roll and the nigiri: it was an unusual take, but glad to see he has a unique point of view when creating his food. Tuna sashimi was a little stringy and toro was very lean, but the other cuts of fish were fine. All in all, i think Andy's roll was my favorite of the bunch. Security guard down the way suggested to try the spider roll next time.

Andy is such a character! You'll surely laugh when you stop by. His sushi bar is located within Wholey's Market. We ordered a couple rolls, the Rainbow Roll and Andy's Special Roll. He made them relatively quickly while making us laugh while doing so. We thought both were great! We preferred Andy's Special Roll over the Rainbow Roll. Nice to know you can get good sushi in the area!

I always love going to Andy's sushi bar on spring break. The sushi is good, and the portions are great. The service is good, and his station seems very sanitary. Every time I've been here it's been a positive experience. Thanks!

Some truly great sushi tucked away in Wholeys. It was so neat to watch him make our order right in front of us and make funny comments. Almost like sushi and a show! Haha. The rolls are HUGE! And so many options to choose from at fair prices.

I've been generally impressed by the quality of the sushi. We ordered takeout this time, and everything was extremely well packaged and presented. In terms of the food, we focussed on fairly standard maki rolls: a spicy salmon roll and a spicy California roll. Both were very nicely done. We also tried the veg farm roll, and that was a nice vegetable forward option. Not life changing, but nicely done. We also opted for a vegetable poke bowl, and that was also good. Basically the same combination of vegetables as the veg farm roll, but in a bowl format. The bowl was good, but it was lacking some sort of sauce or glaze that might have pulled things together. It was easy enough to toss on some condiments of our own, but the bowl could have been better. Overall, I this is my favorite sushi destination in Squirrel Hill. It's very clear that the owners are invested in turning out a high quality experience, and that's exactly the type of business I like to support.

Their selection of appetizers were great, and the quality of each was stellar. We attempted to try quite a few of them, and still have many we want to try. In our group, the tofu with an amazing dashi broth, the crab puffs, "sexy jalepenos", tempura kani, and the gyoza were the standouts. As I stated, though...everything we had was awesome. We all ordered a different ramen, and then shared. They were all phenomenal. The steak teriyaki was also great. Sushi wise, we didn't get to try as many as we had hoped. We were too busy reordering the appetizers. We did try the Crazy Mango roll, and ended up reordering that because it was so good. My kids were with me, and they love all things Mango, and this was phenomenal. For dessert, we had a few orders (and reorders!) of the fried bananas. Overall, I cannot speak higher of our experience. It is very clean, well kept up on, and the service was phenomenal. Quality wise, you can tell how much effort they put into the place purely on their presentation. I had to remark many times about how utterly beautiful some of their dishes were. This was not like our other AYCE experiences where they just rush food out to you. They actually put effort into their craft here, and it is quite obvious. We will definitely be back, and look forward to trying new things that we didn't get to before!

My usual order is the chicken katsu bento box, which comes with a good portion of crunchy sliced chicken katsu, rice, two dumplings, a California roll, and miso soup. It feels like a solid, filling meal with enough variety to make it satisfying. The only downside with my most recent takeout order was the sauce placed in the middle of the container. I'm not sure exactly what it was, and after tasting it, it wasn't really for me. Because of the layout of the takeout container, some of it spilled into the rice and rolls. Next time, I'd probably ask for that sauce on the side in a separate container.

The energy is good vibes only and the most important rule is no complaints. It is only joy and a shared experience of trying things you wouldn't normally splurge on. If you break the rule, you don't get invited back! On this particular night, I was 2 months postpartum and naturally ready to eat and drink all things sinful during pregnancy. Having 2 kids at home and a dutiful dad to watch them, I did not do the responsible thing, make a reservation weeks in advance. I highly recommend that you do this for this high end and highly sought sushi experience. I managed to get lucky and snag my group a 4:00 pm table for 4. I'm sure what you are thinking is that is incredibly too early to eat, but look at it this way - 2 of us have small children and truthfully eating fancy food while our husbands put the kids to bed and making it home just in time to snuggle up and watch tv ended up being absolutely perfect. First, the view is insane. You are perched atop a mountain overlooking 3 rivers converging. It's gorgeous. You will take a picture. Second, the service is outstanding. I've actually been twice this year just to confirm my first experience wasn't a fluke. Extremely attentive staff who make you believe they want you to have the best culinary experience possible, maybe they actually do! We ordered nearly everything on the menu. My favorite dish is the yellowtail jalapeno. It is unreal good. I also tried uni, which was very unique. Probably not something I need to indulge in every time, but still very cool. Our group enjoyed sharing all of our plates with each other. I left feeling so satisfied. It is an understatement to say that Otaru is excellent. We talked about this place for months afterward, with longing. It is definitely one of the best places to take guests from out of town to show them the finer side of Pittsburgh. It was shockingly not busy until about 630pm and they open at 4. There is no valet, just street parking. They provided complimentary edamame which had a great little spicy kick. I ordered the sour, the yuzu gave it a nice fresh citrus taste. My husband had a scotch and Coke. We decided to order the experience which began with a tartar (salmon, tuna and yellowtail on a bed of tuna). Amazing. We then had a two piece sashimi with jalapeño and crispy potato in a sauce that was similar to Italian dressing. This was our favorite of the entire night. Next was a shrimp tasting. It had shaved cucumber and seaweed in a light brown sauce, perhaps a mirin. It was okay, like a cold miso. We then had a dish I had only seen videos of called Chawanmushi. It was like an eggy flan served hot. My husband was not a fan but I was. Then was the first nigiri which the bartender was kind enough to split for us. It included 4 light pieces of sushi. After that there was a cold infused tomato palate cleanser and the second nigiri with "darker" fish. It was all delicious. After that was a fatty tuna hand roll (like a sushi taco) which was amazing as well. And last for the savory items, a soft shell crab which was very, very good. The yellow sauce tasted like the yellow of a potato salad with tastes that mimicked mayo, mustard and pickles. We ordered another round of drinks and I had a dirty martini which they called The New 32. The last item is the red bean dessert but we opted to order more food and had the Treasure Box ($78) which had 9 different sashimis. There were a few repeats from the experience portion but we were happy to have the first sashimi item again. And last, we had the red bean dessert as well as a complimentary tiramisu dessert for the husband's birthday. The bill was just over $300 which was expected for the location, amount of food and overall quality and experience.
