At first glance, it's a very unassuming place, but the smell of smoked meats draws you in as you get closer to the door. Fantastic family run place with friendly service all done in house. We got the brisket dinner all around and we weren't disappointed. If you feel the need for sauce, the sweet and smokey sauce is delicious but the meat stands on it's own. Andre knows how to cook and is a kind, gentle soul with a sense of humor. This is a one man operation and in a good way! Brooks may be lauded, but this place is the real deal. Thick, moist, rubbed and smoked brisket served how you like it. Patrick will trim it if you prefer it lean, and he provides sauce (one vinegar base, one Kansas) if you like it that way, but I recommend trying it without - the meat stands on its own. Wonderful food and generous portions aside, there's also wonderful service - Patrick is an absolute gentleman and had my grumpy three year old smiling and giggling halfway through our meal. Excellent Barbeque here in Upstate New York. The prices are very affordable for the portions and quality of food. Perfectly smoked ribs and brisket. All of the sides were excellent and homemade. Some of the best macaroni salad I've ever had. The sauces were excellent too. The Carolina sauce is my favorite (thin vinegary semi spicy) but their traditional bbq sauce was very good as well. So I found this place on Yelp a couple weeks ago and wanted to give it a try. My family has been going to Brooks BBQ for decades, its practically a household name, during the warm months every other weekend we will get our meals there, sometimes more than once. I'm a big fan of their Spiedie Chicken, which is diced chicken grilled and lightly basted with their signature Spiedie Marinade, YUM. However that being said, the signature bbq sauce, which they LIBERALLY coat all BBQ in, is super sweet, and NOT a favorite. First off, pulling up to Andre's, its a house with a BIG ol' smoker outside, there's not a lot of parking and not necessarily inviting. You walk into a smallish indoor area with a few tables in a kitchen with a counter. Real basic menu, combo plates with some sides and a roll. Also have sandwiches. Its nothing fancy. Ribs, Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Chicken. Here's the real key, all their meat is SMOKED, Brooks is GRILLED, Big difference. Smoking the meats allows huge flavors to cook inside the meats, which are all tender and juicy. All meats are just rubbed, NO basting or drowning in sugary sauces. You can get a small 2oz of Carolina vinegar or KC tomato BBQ sauce. The brisket was the best I've had out of the south. Tender, juicy, nice crust, love the smokey flavor, you can taste the rub but more importantly you can taste the meat. Pork was the same way, very tender, a little bit of fat, but you get that everywhere. The ribs had a really nice rub with some spice, only problem was that I thought they were a bit small. The three meat combo is nice portion, but next time I will get ribs separate so I get more. The sides I got were slaw (traditional slaw) and cornbread, which was really good, that is a must have. I also got a separate side of Mac salad, which was good, not real heavy in mayonnaise, and seasoned well, also had hard boiled egg in it which I like. And a side of Cowboy beans, which was not what I expected, I figured they were baked beans, but they were more stewed with brisket and pork, more savory than sweet. Wife and I recently stopped by Andres after some time in Oneonta, we were the only customers at the time as they had just opened up for business that day, very nice quaint place. We ordered the 4 meat plate but had to double on the brisket as the chicken wasn't ready yet, the bbq is outstanding. Brisket, ribs and pork were moist and tender and had great smoke flavor, both the sides of the beans and coleslaw were also excellent and the wife enjoyed the cornbread. Given all the five star reviews, I wanted to be impressed. The food was good -- not amazing, just good. The meats were well-prepared, and the cornbread a bit dry. There are two BBQ sauces on the table. Both are solid flavors; the spicier one is surprisingly watery. The server had several opportunities to impress us, and failed each time. When I asked her, "What's really good?" she responded with a bland, "Everything's good" and "Depends on what you like." This was an opportunity for her to showcase what locals ask for, what the chef's especially proud of, what she likes, etc. Ordering is done at the counter and 12-ounce sodas are sold by the can, so my son and I asked for two cans each, avoiding a separate trip to the counter for refills, knowing that we would drink that much. The server expressed visual surprise at our indulgence of 24 ounces of Diet Pepsi, and when she delivered them to the table, she said, "Don't O.D!" What a wonderful hole in the wall alongside a country highway. I swung by during a slow point on a Thursday (fear not, there were a phalanx of people streaming in as I left with a bulging belly). The owners, it's taken me a week to write this so my memory's hazy, were so kind and welcoming. I had brisket, pulled pork and ribs along with beans and cole slaw. Everything was terrific, especially the ribs. We had a conversation about the regional variety of American barbeque and I'm really looking forward to my return visit. This place is good and open. Read the Yelp reviews and they were all over a year old, and even saw one review saying it was closed. I called them and they were open. Drove over to a "rustic" establishment. So already it had the looks to be a good BBQ place. We both got the 2 meat platter, ribs and brisket. I had the "cold slaw" and sweet potato. My son had the pinto beans and corn bread. The ribs were great. Very flavorful and smoky. Didn't need sauce, had a nice chew to them while still being moist. Everything good BBQ is supposed to be. They have a east Carolina sauce and Kansas City style BBQ sauces at the table. Brisket is tough to do well. They did it well. Moist, flavorful. They were training a new person, so the slices were a lot thicker than they should be. Broke my heart. Brisket was tasty. They were kind enough to let me taste the pulled pork too. It isn't the style where they drenched shredded pork in sauce. Chunks of moist meat, I didn't get any bark in my sample. Great smoke flavor. The rub hadn't penetrated this deep. Nice sweet pork flavor. Only negatives, the tap water had a sulfur flavor and the service was slow. They use filters, so they said they'd check it. Felt like I was over a friend's house. Chit chatting with the wife of the owner about BBQ. Anyhow great BBQ for people who know good BBQ. Stop by soon. Apparently they were closed for a bit. Not sure how long they will stay open. Was across the street doing business wondering what to do for dinner. Looked up to see the open sign lit up at Andre's. BINGO! I've been here before and the food is good. Tonight was amazing. Brisket has wonderful flavor, no sauce needed, and so tender. Sides pinto beans and smoked mushrooms. I loved the pintos in the past and tonight they were just as marvelous as remembered. The beef brisket is so popular, they were out by mid afternoon on Saturday. That was too bad, but the pulled pork, ribs and chicken were great too. Both housemade sauces at the table were very tasty. Like another reviewer said, you don't even need to bother with the BBQ sauce they provide. There's enough flavor without it. And they have a little heat to them, which I like. This place was just fantastic. A destination place if you are in the Oneonta area. The owners are absolutely a pleasure and take good care of you. You can tell that they take great pride in the product that they put out. It looked to be a labor of love. I got the three meat dinner and I am not even sure how they make money off the food as they are very generous with the servings. I felt like I was cheating them due to the size of the plate and the insanely low price. We were a party of 6 and not one person had anything but high praise for the food. Oh, where to begin. My husband and I came across this little gem yesterday while searching for a dinner spot. We drove past Brooks, which was packed and we are thankful for it. The BBQ here was fantastic and the owner was a pleasure to speak with. My husband and I had a little bit of everything per the owner's suggestion and we were super happy. The ribs were so delicious, as was everything we tried but my favorite was the coleslaw. Yes, I'm a coleslaw snob and this was one of the best I've had. I could go on for days but you really have to go an experience it for yourself. Don't let looks fool you because they do a great take out service so they might be empty when you go (which is fine with us because we were speaking with the owner).
