Located on the 1st floor of the Hillsdale Mall, this outpost is much larger than the SF Japantown location. They had run out of a lot of items, including coffee jelly, by the time we got there on a Sunday around 3:00pm. Our order: Strawberry Matcha ($5.50): Requested no ice +Matcha was strong and not grainy +Refreshing and not super sweet +No upcharge for no ice -Very little strawberry puree at the bottom Café Latte (Double - $5.35) +Not my drink, but there were no complaints. Slice of Cappuccino Cream Cake ($5.85): +Strong coffee flavor infused in the cake and cream +Not too sweet or heavy -Cake was on the dry side Side notes: 1.) Self-serve napkins and utensils 2.) Indoor and outdoor covered patio seating 3.) Free parking in the Hillsdale Mall parking garage *Verdict: 4 stars for the food and drinks, but 5 stars for the AMAZING service. My mom accidentally knocked over my dad's coffee after taking a sip. An employee must've seen what happened and told the manager, who came out to the patio shortly after. She asked my dad if he was okay and offered to replace his coffee on the house. She was so sweet and went above and beyond, turning that frown upside down.

This place is just a shell of what it used to be. Whoever was in charge of their remodel should be committed. It used to be such a warm, welcoming place, and now it's worse than a hospital cafeteria. Everything is cold, stark and falling apart. The quality of the food has also gone way downhill (see ham and cheese croissant photo). The coffee is served at scalding, with only an always almost empty of milk and a few scattered packets of Splenda to temper it. The staff is trying their best but they are clearly overworked and underpaid. I appreciate that the sample dish is usually filled. People will keep coming here because there aren't a ton of offerings at Hillsdale, but it is no longer the pleasant place it used to be.

Went here with my parents for an afternoon snack. The store is clean and has indoor and outdoor seating. I mainly came here because I wanted to try one of the seasonal items. The lady who helped us was nice but didn't provide us with any recommendations on items. We chose to sit outside even if it was a little windy. 1. Matcha melon pan: Deliciously tasty. It was light, and I loved the little crust on the outer shell. No shortage on matcha filling, which I loved, and it had the lightly sweet melon flavor. 2. Mango coconut pastry: I usually alternate between this and the strawberry tart. 3. Walnut cream cheese bread: My mom's favorite snack, a classic staple here. 4. Chicken empanadas: My mom's favorite here as well. Nice chicken filling that leaves her stuffed. 5. Cinnamon sugar danish bar: I got this for my dad thinking it was similar to a donut stick, but it ended up being dry and uneventful.

Nothing better than a visit from a friend bearing delectable treats. What a nice surprise!! I couldn't help taking a peak before everyone else. Then I not so subtlely suggested we cut each treasure into small portions for a tasting, of everything. It was afternoon and perfect time for a treat! Cousin's friend brought: strawberry and peach danishes and almond twist. My favorite was the sweet tartness of the peach. The fruit in all the danishes was delicious. (4/5). For me, the tastiest part of the special delivery was the curried puff. Deep fried, golden brown goodness filled with a savory, deep flavored curry. This alone will keep me coming back for more..! Thank you friend for remembering my cousin and I. Thank you Andersen for feeding us so well this afternoon..!

More Protein, anyone?! The service was so-so. Not very friendly. The location needs some update in maintenance. Many pastries by the counter are not covered since it is near the exit/entrance. the food is okay.

This is a solid 3-4 star spot, I am choosing to go with 4 since they have always provided me friendly service and the pastries are delicious, plus it's a nice alternative to the mall food court. Tucked away in one of the halls of the Hillsdale Mall, this bakery always has intoxicating smells of fresh baked bread that will pull you in. I've lived nearby for a while, so I've dropped in more than just once. Whether to grab a pastry while window shopping, or to warm up with a hot soup or tea and catch up with friends, I have never had a really bad experience here. During the pandemic and workin from home, I found they are a nice lunch alternative with plenty of great sandwich options. The pork torta was an unexpected find, but it delivered. I was fearing a wimpy torta, but it was hearty and delicious, something you might find at your favorite taqueria. I could have saved half for 2nd lunch, but that's no fun. At around $9-$10 each, it's a solid value. Back in summer 2022 at least, seating was plentiful and they have some tables outside, but sectioned off from the passerby. Perfect for sunny weather or just to get away. Check them out next time you need a pick me up, to get through your shopping!

This is dangerously close to me I used to order from the one in San Mateo but now I could just stop by this one in my neighborhood whenever. Their desserts are not very sweet and normally quite elegant & delicate as well.

I was so excited to see them open again. Unfortunately the staff here are not following Covid rules. The mask needs to go over your nose to be the most effective. Also if you handle money wash your hands before you touch the pastries or other food for customer. With or without Covid 19, having good hygiene is important. There was a Latino woman on her break who was not eating who had her mask completely OFF just sitting there going over her papers INSIDE the store. I tried to take a picture of her to document it but when she saw me she said she was on her break and started moving her arms as to not take her photo. Employees and management should follow the health and safety rules. The food here is okay...took forever to get my sandwich even though I was the only one of two people to order a sandwich. 2 stars for Employees not wearing their masks or not wearing them properly and handlfood without cleaning their dirty hands.

My friend ordered the root beer float with cold brew ice cubes. It was not super heavy, it mixed well, and somehow, the root beer tasted great with the subtle but noticeable coffee flavor. For my drink, I got two shots of espresso. I just needed a quick pick me up! For food, my friend got the chicken tortilla soup. It was absolutely delicious. The shredded chicken and the broth were wonderful, I do wish it had less tortilla strips because they soaked up all the broth if left there for too long. I got the California bagel, which was also delicious. It was a little too much egg for my liking, but the bagel was only $12 which I think is decent for what I got. The Strawberry croissant was TO DIE FOR. I have never enjoyed a croissant as much as this one. Fresh strawberry cream inside, super fluffy and crispy croissant overall. LOVE! Not to mention the cafe is very chic, we sat at a table where we could maximize our sunlight exposure. The servers and cashiers were nice, welcoming, and helpful. So glad we came here!

For food I ordered a bacon cheddar quiche and a mushroom Gruyère toast. The quiche was flavored pretty well it was just a bit dry. And I wish it were served hotter. It came with a simple side salad that was tasty. The mushroom and Gruyère toast ended up being my favorite. The Gruyère got melty from the hot mushrooms and the balsamic drizzle on top was a perfect touch Overall we were very happy with our drinks and satisfied with the food we tried. Hey hey hey! (Good old "Music Champ" or for those not familiar with that Japanese variety show,…read more"Fat Albert"!) Another legit Japanese bakery in the Yay? You bet! Jiro/Jirou Cafe & Bakery (Jirou Sabou/二郎茶房) is a Japanese cafe on Belmont's Las Pulgas and Carlmont. From what I have gathered as I did my prior scouting/dining scouting (I can't recall anymore), the place is only 3 years old. Seeing that I'm a San Jose/Milpitas cat, I'll type what this place has over Clover and vice versa. This is done not only so that I can recall what I ordered should I enter as I get off 101 again. This is also done so that Belmont residents, Frisco ones and those nearby can get an idea of what to expect when they can decide whether Jiro or Clover has the better batch of items. I felt awful for staying in for 3 hours of the 4 weekend hours of operation yesterday, but as I type up this review and remember to insert the usual "Yes guys, the ladies are cute!" statement, I did get more items before this place closed for the day. I blame/thank the music, especially an Utada Hikaru-san song. The staff's really terrific. The look seems random with a simple look wall and a white and pink stripe look wall that gives me shades of Anna Miller's, but it works because the place is really cute. I mean, there's a Kuromi decoration as opposed to the Too Short name dropped Kitty in Clover! Though there's a kiosk, there's also the ever important bottle of sanitizer and the register should you pay with cash. Okay, I better get the comparison paragraph pair out of the way. Let me show you something--I mean start with what Jiro has over Clover! (Yay "In Living Color".) As I typed in the last paragraph, Jiro has Kuromi. Beside that, there are items such as an iced houjicha latte with in house cream, Japanese sodas including my San Franciscan friend's melon soda that made him wish he's back in Japan, cat shaped bread along with multiple forms of cat decorations, Anpan Man pan with Jiro being the second place I have been to carrying them after Sac's Mahoroba, big savory sandwiches such as yakisoba sando, tonkatsu quesadilla, yuzu cheesecake, pan such as sakura pan, matcha panna cotta, Belgian chocolate brownies, juurokucha bottles (a non-caffeinated tea of 16 ingredients) and on the go snacks such as the Japanese animal crackers boxes. I can't forget the seating, an element Clover had before the pandemic mess. What Clover has over Jiro. Clover has the cooler Sanrio character. Regarding the foods and drinks, Clover has Italian sodas with the Torani syrups, ice cream for the French ones as opposed to cream or half and half, piroshiki/pirozhki, mini versions of sandwiches such as korokke/croquette and okonomiyaki/modan'yaki pan (savory pancake with noodles for the latter if you are not familiar with Japanese food), donut twists, strawberry sando, and Japanese strawberry shortcake. Regarding what I bought, I picked out items I can't get at the other Japanese bakeries I've been to in the sakura pan, the yuzu cheesecake and the houjicha latte. The latte's cream is so silky. The sakura pan is also good. As for the cheesecake, while I think Charlie's (as in the cheesecake place on Redmond) makes the most yummy cheesecake, Jiro's for me probably makes the least guilty cheesecake (a very good trait to have) because it's not that sweet, and yuzu's a good fruit to have. The flaws. Outside of the parking lot across the street, the place has really bad parking, as you can only park for 20 minutes in front of the cafe. You figure that there's the lot around the corner, but don't use it, as it's for the medical center. Also, there are limited hours of operation (11-5 Wednesday to Friday and 12-4 on the weekends). Neither flaw can't be helped I suppose, especially since Belmont isn't really a suburb you think of regarding Japanese food. If only there's a fruit sando or a korokke pan. Jiro is an amazing spot for me. While it unfortunately will never be my top Japanese bakery (I've known Clover's for around 20 years), it is a very good bakery never the less. To think, I found this spot on the fly after having lunch. If you live in Belmont, visit this place often because having a Japanese bakery is like having a Mr. Mays baseball card or for some of you, a shiny Pokemon. Get there early so you don't miss out on items. +/Jiro is a jiving cafe because of its adorable staff, brilliant visuals, and a grand list of Japanese pastries and drinks. -/Carpy parking and limited hours made me twitch.
