Location is great, right in the main drag of downtown San Mateo. Lots of seating and it's airy and bright inside. My go-to is always the philtered soul with a bit of soy milk, but a nice treat is the mojito with fresh mint leaves and unfortunately heavy whipping cream tot get the delicious creaminess. I really want to like Philz, and give it a try every couple of years when I'm in town, but always seem to end up disappointed. The current parking setup makes it nearly impossible to access the cafe, and going inside there wasn't clear signage on where to go to order at the rear counter. This time, I ordered a tiramisu latte off the holiday menu, but something about the coffee taste was just off. I ended up transferring cups later in the day and there were a lot of grounds at the bottom of the cup. Not impressed. read more

I love how this Philz is really spacious and I like how the pick up orders is really fast and efficient. I usually order the winter bliss but this time I ordered their special pistachio spice and it was really good but on the sweeter side. I would recommend getting it less sweet if you're not a big fan of sweet coffee! read more

The Philz in downtown San Mateo is one of the nicest locations I've been to. It has a large area inside with plenty of seating and natural life which makes it a perfect place to work. They have some outdoor seating as well right in the heart of downtown. I love that they have a vegetarian breakfast sandwich and other healthy options. read more

One of the bigger Philz location I have visited. Very spacious interior with lots of tables and chairs. Perfect to chill with friends or get some work done on your laptop. Appreciate how they have a water jug available to get a water cup or fill up your own water bottle. As always, my favorite drink is the Iced Coffee Rose! I would recommend ordering ahead on the app but service is the same as every coffee shop. Maybe 10 - 15 min wait depending on the crowd. I've always had good experiences at this Philz location, which is why today was so frustrating. I placed a mobile order and my husband went inside to pick it up, something we've done many times before without any issue. I stayed outside with our child, which is why I didn't go in myself initially. The barista (Ava) refused to give him the order, told him it was at another counter, sent him there, and then he was told to go back to the original counter. After all that, she asked him for a receipt. He came back outside clearly very frustrated, and I then had to go inside myself--only to find the order sitting right there with her the whole time. She did apologize, but the entire situation felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. Given that this has never happened to us before, it was hard not to feel like he was being treated differently. I hope this was a one-off, but it was frustrating and disappointing, especially from a place we've otherwise enjoyed. read more

I went to so many Philz throughout the Bay Area over a decade. This one is the closest to me. I hardly go to a non dog friendly places since we take our dogs with us everywhere. But if I do want to work from a coffee shop this is the place I go to. It's such a warm and cozy "work from home " vibe with good people around. Mellow and easy music all the time. Super chill and not disturbing at all. Huge space with different settings with outlets everywhere. Almost feels like a tech co-working space. Coffee wise, they are the legitimate true passionate coffee people. Created their whole system for making coffee naming them and serving them. Can't think of a better one in the whole Bay Area. read more

June 12th, 2025 On June 12, I ordered a large mocha Tesora at the San Mateo location. The coffee is watery and it was seven minutes late past the time I had requested/pre-ordered it. (What I didn't say is that after sending the email I threw more than half the beverage away due to the poor taste/quality). The quality of drinks here is consistent to any other Philz. My drink (a half-and-half blend of green tea and chamomile) was minty, fresh, and delicious. SERVICE (2/5) It took me 10 minutes to order despite there being only one person in line in front of me... and another 20 minutes just to get my drink despite me entering the store when it was almost EMPTY. It was a walking distance from my lunch place and street in front was block to traffic when I visited, so I was glad I walked over. Service at any Philz is always good. Coffee is consistently good. This is one of my favorite Philz. They have ample tables, so it's a nice place to come and work or meet up with a friend. The coffee is consistently fantastic, and I recommend the iced coffee rose which has a nice floral touch, or the winter bliss which is like an elevated and more complex mocha that borders a hot chocolate. read more

One of my favorite coffee shops in the area. This shop is so spacious and clean, lots of space for people to work, also outdoor seats too. Nice staff. I am always on the go, so I usually order ahead in the app. So convenient! I am able to customize my drinks and food orders in the app. My usuals here include the iced mint mojito and the cold brew. Walked in Sunday at noon and only one customer in front of us ordered drink but took us over 15 mins to get our ice coffee. This place is very slow compared to the one in Hillsdale mall!! I ordered same ice coffee from Hillsdale yesterday and they were super busy but I still able to get our drink within few minutes. Also my drink water down with tons of ice cube overload as well!!! Philz went downhill over the last couple of years. I asked for coffee without milk, but it is so strong that when I asked to make it lighter, they made it so complicated that I said "milk is fine". Adding cold milk to coffee is a big NO. Who wants to drink luke warm coffee?! In addition to that it is very unfortunate that profit-driven and corporate culture is more present than ever. I come here to this location once a week. Always makes my Mint Mojito perfectly. Everyone are always friendly and very pleasant. Place is always clean. I order mine online on my way here from San Jose. I usually forget to pick up by the time i get there because i ordered too early. By the time i find a parking spot i like, the ice have melted a bit and still tastes yummy. I like that the cups used are very sturdy and don't get soft over time, so i can enjoy my drink longer without worrying. The insulation is quite good too. It's definitely worth what you pay. The coffee was solid. As mentioned, I'm more of a latte person if I'm going out for coffee, but the concoction I got involving nutmeg was solid. The wifi was strong and easy to log on to. While not a ton of seating, there was no problem finding a seat on a Monday afternoon. Food options were looking eh on a Monday afternoon. Overall, a solid coffee going experience. I make coffee at home and I go a lot of coffee shops so I know one drink should be made within 2 minutes. (I ordered regular coffee not the complicated specials) 3 employees were chatting while I was waiting for my coffee. I'm not sure if they started my order until I asked how long it would take. Been several years since I've visited California. I used to live in San Francisco and enjoyed getting the Iced Mint Mojito and Avocado Toast with Egg on a regular basis. If you've never been to Philz, here's what you do. At this location, head to the cash register located in the center of the space and place your order. Your order will likely come from the back bar -- listen for your name. (If you ordered ahead, your order will probably be at the front bar.) Be patient; the drinks can take a little more time to make than your typical coffee drinks. Philz doesn't do espresso or espresso-based drinks. They only do coffee and coffee-based drinks. I recommend starting off with the Iced Mint Mojito then exploring from there. Despite the name, there is no alcohol in the Iced Mint Mojito. It's a delicious blend of coffee, cream, simple syrup, and real mint. My other favorite Philz item, as I mentioned, is the Avocado Toast with Egg. Sadly, they did not have the Avocado Toast at this location. Even more sadly, I think Philz may have removed it from their menu entirely. It was one of my favorite avocado toasts I've ever had so hopefully they'll bring it back if they did remove it. That's about it. Definitely give Philz a try.
