Can't recommend this place enough!! My friend and I came here to get my second and third tattoos and her first one and our artist for all of them was Jacob who was awesome. My friend made an appointment with Jacob for Thursday and when we called to see if he could squeeze me in for a couple of small ones after hers and he said to drop by whenever and he would be able to make something work. Later that day (it was a Wednesday), we stopped by the shop to see if anything was available and Jacob greeted us and said he would be able to tattoo both of us that night. He stayed until 10:30pm (they close at 8pm) finishing us up and we could not be HAPPIER!! I got two glyphs and moon phases that required a good deal of detail/shading in small areas that he executed gorgeously. My friend got a mountain on her side rib cage that he drew up and changed 3-4 times (my friend kept changing her mind), and was still very patient and accommodating to us. During the actual tattoo: Everything was cleaned and prepped properly and he made sure to make the positioning of all my tattoos even and to my liking, even if it meant moving it just a quarter inch, he was great. He checked in multiple times throughout both of them to make sure that I was doing alright and said I could take a break whenever I needed. When he finished he let me look and make any changes/improvements/additions I wanted along with his suggestions/experience. The tattoos themselves are precise, clean, shaded beautifully, and are healing well. We both couldn't be happier with the work or the artist. Because he stayed late we were able to free up our last day of visiting in the city which we couldn't be more grateful for. No matter how late it was getting Jacob made sure to be careful and attentive with his work, patient with his clients and made us all feel welcome and listened to. Overall would 12/10 recommend this place to any and all of my friends who are considering getting their first tattoo, or their 12th, this is a great shop. read more

I have gotten 3 tattoos now at Anchor and have been very happy each time. Two of the tattoos were smaller but still very detailed and then the bigger one was 2.5 hours, and again, detailed. be patient about communication. it is a small shop so it might take a day or two to hear back but don't let that spoil your experience or think they don't care. Jacob is my guy there and I highly recommend him. Scheduled a session on October 24th with Jacob (my birthday). My appointment was at noon. I arrived at 11:59am. Jacob was there and had already prepared the outline from the photos/tats that I emailed earlier in the week. This is by far my favorite place to go. I have 8 tattoos and this is the only place I've gone back to for more by the same artitsts. Every time I leave, I'm crazy happy with the results! You should always go in with an idea in mind, if not an example of what you want. Keep in mind, drawings on paper do not always transfer well to skin. These guys know their business, and when they make suggestions or recommend changes, it's for a good reason. The one time I couldn't find a picture that really expressed what I wanted, I went to the shop to talk about it. I have been going to Anchor Tattoo, more specifically to Tracy, for the last three years. I had four pieces prior to coming to Anchor, all of which were done at different shops. I have now had a half sleeve completed by Tracy and I am scheduled for another appointment. My point is, this is the only shop that I have ever gone back to and will continue to go to even now that I have moved from the area. The work that Tracy does is amazing to say the least. He is a true professional in every aspect of it. He knows knows the tradition and history of his craft to the fullest. He is the master of traditional work, which is handy seeing that is what I am primarily interested in. Also, I had an idea that involved four different aspects of my history that I didn't know how to bring together. Lucky for me, Tracy drew up the most amazing art that passed my expectations. I have read some of the other posts on here about the artists being "gruff" or "rude" and think it is just ridiculous. I have had nothing but hours of interesting conversations with the artists. I would tell these people to remember that they are going to a tattoo shop/place of business where the artists take their work very seriously and not going to a Facebook convention. I would recommend this shop to anyone who is serious about their tattoos and want art that is above reproach. read more

I was thrilled that the idea for my tattoo was so well embraced by Tracy Zumwalt (owner) and executed with such positivity and enthusiasm. His excitement got me more excited about the piece that is now a permanent fixture on my foot. I have been tattoo'd ten times by seven tattoo artists (from all over the country) and my experience here was unlike any before. I found myself very comfortable with the staff and I didn't get the feeling that these guys were arrogant about what they did (as SO many tattooists are, in my experience). I found them very easy to trust and talk to. They all acknowledged me as a person instead of just a customer. They gave me honest opinions based upon their professional experiences and they all seemed to be interested in my tattoo, my experience (they even bought me dinner... and then coffee! What?! AWESOME...) and the relationship I was building with them, both as individual professionals and as a group. Over all, I really couldn't have asked for a better experience. Just finished a two-session traditional style tattoo here and could not be happier. Tracy is an amazing artist with real integrity and respect for his clients and his craft. Caveats: (a) he's not on the computer much, you're better off calling; (b) things seem to always take longer than the estimates (though he was more than fair about the price); (c) he altered the design a little as he was working on it (though they were always improvements). I get that these kinds of things might cause some amount of stress if you're type-A-inclined like me, but it's TOTALLY WORTH IT. Did I mention I could not be happier with this tattoo? read more

I got a tat from Anchor many years ago when they first opened up in Ballard. Curtis, Leo and company are great artists. They also do charity events, which puts them higher in my estimation! The receptionist has been rather rude or cold to me, but maybe he/she was just having a bad day. My friend got his first tattoo here, today, and I never felt more inclined but to leave a review for those that would welcome research on potential parlors as they weigh their options. On a Saturday, we were skeptical to be spontaneous but understand the lasting importance such a decision makes for the rest of that person's life. Between a group of us, we already have a "friendship tattoo" that we have been anticipating and anxious to share with those who were unable to join us for our original venture; that venture being an $80 investment on the Las Vegas strip, simply outlining the shape of a heart the size of a quarter (Las Vegas being a place that we already understood the premiums and chaos that can ensue for drunken crowds). In inquiring what the cost would be at Anchor Tattoo back here in Seattle for one of our friends, $80 was established and we had no resistance. Those working even requested that we return in an hour before our "walk-in" could be assisted, which was more than acceptable and understandable. That said, we already felt an initial impression of distaste from the staff members based on this request and attempted to shrug off the unnecessary reservations to enjoy the moment. Upon our return, we noticed the "Cash-Only" sign and quickly ran across the street to ensure we were prepared for payment. When all was prepped and our friend was taken to get his first tattoo, it was then that we were informed we could not join him upstairs to be there by his side. Again, another precaution, legal and safety measure we can appreciate but would benefit knowing ahead of service. At first, there was just the two of us girls that were in the wait room and later joined by three other friends who were initially present when we first walked in. I would like to think that we were being respectable of the current client on the first floor and only talking to our friend on the second floor (open-floor plan) to ease any nerves. The lady that was with the customer on the first floor even gave us reassuring nods that we were not crossing any boundaries or causing any irritations. Within a short few minutes, the artist with the patron before us (blocked by a mid-wall barrier) rudely exclaimed that we "be quiet as he cannot pay attention." We were caught completely off-guard. It was insulting to a point that the least he could have done, in the situation of a tattooist, was take a brief moment to reassert our excitement and yearning to be there for our friend's first, life-long commitment but ask that we kindly bring it down a notch. There is a way to professionally bring us back to a level that allowed him to successfully do his job while not completely demising our existence and the support we were exerting to sincerely enjoy an occasion that we would think they would be familiar with managing. At this point, three of our friends decided to wait outside because they didn't want to cause a scene and wanted to be considerate of their establishment. All I can say is that the man who couldn't stand our average 'tattoo-inspired' commotion, had glasses and was obviously above whatever quick, painless and standard fifteen minute session we were about. I have been in enough customer service positions to want and encourage a practice to tip generously but this pushed me over the edge enough to be apt to take my friend's artist aside to explain my disappointment (which, I know was not well received or reciprocated because of passive rolled eyes he immediately gave). My reason to take this additional time and conversation aside was strictly to in hopes of giving solid and constructive feedback to an employee that would acknowledge the opportunity to be prepared and informed for making future visits all the more better. At the same time, I want to stress that my friend's artist was very genuine and attentive, he did a brilliant job - and I believe his name was Chris - but the overall experience was lackluster and passed as if we were just another job. Outlining the limitations a development has from the get-go, or at least given the benefit of seeing the placement of the design on a friend's body (this being placed on his back, so completely out of his sight) before it becomes permanent, are little things that can make expectations work for all parties. All things we were happy to look past but within the small window of time we were there and the number of frustrations that stacked up, it feels like a justified let-down that led to feeling, overall, offensive. Nothing against anyone's great and invaluable times that were previously had here, but it would have been nice to at least be given the experience you would think someone's first tattoo would be. read more

My dad and I have been interested in getting a tattoo for about a year now. After finally finding a day we were both free, we decided to head over to Seattle and see what places could take walk-ins. We visited four shops before we ended up at Anchor Tattoo. Jacob greeted both of us and after a short wait we were sitting in a chair. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and awesome work. A friend called and asked if the two of us could come in at around nine for a touch up and I wanted to get small lettering done on my leg. They said sure anything after nine should be good. So we made our way down to the shop, walk in and no "hello" or "welcome" I couldn't even see who was there but he just said "do you guys have any questions?" And my friend told him that we had called about getting tattoos and he said he wasn't going to have anytime that night. It was about 9:15pm. Hours posted on the door, and on here said they closed at midnight. So we went to the bar next door. The shop was all closed up by 10pm. Kind if a waste of time to drive down there. read more

He has done two amazing tattoos for me - one on my shin and one on my elbow (ouch). not only do the tattoos look amazing, he is totally creative and excited about what he does, so talented, and really a nice guy. I had been here once before 2 years ago and really liked the service i got/cleanliness of the shop. So i decided after work yesterday to swing on in and inquire about another tattoo i wanted/put the deposit down. I got the same great customer service as last time, and was able to get in right then for my new tattoo :) Tracy did an amazing job and listened to what i was looking for.
