Went out with the girlfriend's family to eat here. My 1st time here. The place took me back in time with my grandparents on vacation. Just that back in the day diner service. Service is great and caring to your needs. I loved everything I ordered. The chicken dumpling soup was good but I was expecting creamy soup not a clear broth. This place has been around forever, but I've never stopped in until now. They had a decent sized menu offering a lot of classic, bar foods, but I feel as though they've amped up the usual choices. An example is the chicken wings, which I hear are very good. They offer the traditional seasoned wings, but also offer butter & garlic and General Tso's. This is also one of the few places left that I see offering liver and onions, and that alone is a reason why I have a friend that visits regularly. As soon as we were seated, we were offered popcorn as a snack and that was a nice change that I haven't seen from many places. For apps, I tried the pierogies which were served up with some onion, a lot of butter, and shallots. The pierogies looked like the standard Mrs. T's, but I enjoyed them. I'd have preferred more onion, but that's just me. I also tried a potato pancake and I thought those were above average. These didn't appear store bought and I think they're the closest I've had to homemade potato pancakes short of going to a Morton's or any other high-end spot. I'm gladly get these again. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and since they didn't offer my usual choice, cheddar, I decided to try bleu cheese. The burger was pretty tasty and sizable, and it tasted like nostalgia. There's a flavor that old diner-type spots just seem to have in their food, and this represented that represented that well. I also tried a bite of their grilled cheese which was the traditional American cheese and it had tomato on it. I think it tasted fine, but the tomato was really watery and I wasn't a fan of the texture it gave to the bite. Sandwiches all appear to come alone and you have to order fries or onion rings separately, which I didn't realize, but I had some shared with me and they were that same nostalgic flavor I remember from childhood any time I'd go to get a meal at a bar around here. The biggest issue I had was that when I used the restroom, there was no soap anywhere and I'd definitely like to have some handy before I'm eating sandwiches and finger foods. I would've overlooked this gem. The outside is unassuming but the food is so good. We both got a burger and fries. The burger was great, but the hand cut (not frozen) fries were to die for. The food was plentiful so we didn't have time for dessert. The main thing that we loved was the service. Our server was on top of everything. Although she had several tables she didn't miss a beat. I've been going there for years I really like the decor and that it's family run.i like sitting in the bar area and they give you a basket of popcorn and it's excellent. They have the best Walleye sandwich around and have specials for Monday night Football. The only complaint I have is to much seasoning on the wings but they sell a lot so it might only be me. It's been a long time since I was at the Anchor Inn - I mean well over a decade. This restaurant has been in the Heights (I was raised here) for over 60 years. Silly me for having taken so long to come back...next time can't come soon enough. They do a great job in every respect here. Prompt seating with a smile, clean settings, our young server was both solicitous and knowledgeable. 3 adults and 2 kids in our party...and we were all smiles throughout the meal. Soups, salads, appetizers, entre's...all very well presented and prepared! Cabbage and wedding soups were great. Salads were fresh. The hot pepper cheese bites were paired with a dijon mustard - a combination that works great! For main courses, I had the crab stuffed jumbo shrimp, my daughter a pasta Alfredo with chicken and broccoli, my son in law steak. The kids had spaghetti, shrimp and turkey with stuffing. Everything was done right. Our server checked on us multiple times, refilling and carrying away empty plates. I live a fair bit away, but this place is worth the long drive. The arrogance of the owner and rudeness of the staff made for a bad experience. Food quality was ok at best over cooked steaks from the flat top, and frozen vegetables. The bake potato was the best part of the meal. The scrubs for uniforms made sense after our meal was complete as the food was hospital quality. I will not be returning any time soon. I love the people here and the atmosphere. But the food is basically diner style food but not nearly as good as a diner should be. We've gone twice. I had the big fish sandwich last time, it was obviously frozen. The middle had the creamy gooey mess you find in cheap fish sticks. Not impressed. My husband had a Philly cheese steak. Not write about worthy but not bad. The previous visit I we had burgers. Which were okay. What makes the place is the staff and atmosphere. Everyone is super friendly and open. This is usually our go to spot when everyone is in town. They have great appetizers and a great atmosphere over in the bar area. We had our rehearsal dinner here for our wedding and I had no complaints. My favorites are the cheese delights, wings, and deluxe dinner salads. Most of the staff is very nice. First time was fine. Basic food but that was what we wanted. Second time ended up a disaster which was totally unnecessary. It took 3 tries to get a basic grilled cheese and bacon plus onion rings correct. First no bacon on on the sandwich, then a side order of bacon, (still haven't figured that out) then overheated via microwave onion rings which were then inedible. But all of that is forgiveable despite it not being very busy since it was just after 5. I am in my 6th decade so I realize kitchens have off nights. Probably would have chalked it up to just being an off night. But what I will not put up with is being belittled and humiliated. Our server was excellent. No, I guess it is was the manager (never introduced himself) who doled out the punishment to us. He was even rude enough to say "it is just a grilled cheese". Precisely!! Exactly what is the problem with preparing correctly such a simple meal?? I didn't raise my voice or cuss. I was too stunned by his attitude. And he thinks not charging us is the answer. Sorry, not in my world. I want my food prepared correctly and as ordered. And if it isn't, I certainly should not be treated rudely because I have the temerity to complain. It has nothing to do with how simple the food ordered is. It has everything to do with being treated with dignity and respect simply because I am a human being. Is this what our world has come to?? That if you dare to complain, we will embarrass you. I am still stunned and it was over 4 hours ago. A nice evening ruined in a way because of a rude, inept and patronizing manager. My husband and I eat here quite often. We even had our wedding reception there. The food is good for the price - you get a lot for your money. The service is decent, we've always been treated well by the staff. As often as we eat there, we've not once had a bad meal or bad service. It's a bar/restaurant. We ate there today. Our waitress was pretty rude to us. My mother asked her to take a plate from our table and she deliberately ignored her request. (I could tell because she looked right at her and then walked away.) When you are in the restaurant business, rudeness is one thing that will cause people to storm out the door. While our food was satisfactory, I thought the service was pretty poor. I really wish I spoke to the manager about our waitress. They need to know when their staff is snubbing a customer. read more

I've been frequenting the Anchor for almost 10 years and its been consistently good throughout. Service is usually pretty good, and the food is good for what it is. I recommend the fried fish. Their homemade coleslaw is the bomb. Friend ice cream is good too. read more
