It was almost distracting like they weren't at work. I had a lady check me out and she was so concerned with leaving afterwards that she forgot to remove a hangar. I shop here pretty often - it is a fun spot for treasure-hunting. I come for books, framed pictures and unusual art, dishes, knick-knacks, holiday decor, and occasionally furniture. The prices are higher than I'd like for a thrift shop but if you get lucky with the price tag colors then sometimes there are good deals. Stickers are extremely sticky and are put on things regardless of whether it will damage them or not, so be aware that this stuff is a pain to get off if you are looking for collectibles. Parking lot is large and easy to access. Staff is generally friendly and helpful... if you can find them. There is not always someone at the register and the method they have of checking people out seems purposely designed to be the most inefficient and awkward setup possible. Not the staff's fault, but can management consider a re-design of the check-out area? Overall decent store and I love that it supports the veterans. They always ask if I want to round up my purchase as a donation and yes, I do. Great cause and good treasure hunting spot. read more

I packed up my father's house. brought all the items outside and down the stairs, only to be informed that they cd only take 10 bags! it was emotional enough packing up my deceased fathers items and a ton of work as well. No one when I scheduled mentioned anything about a limit. now I have all these items outside the apt, I do not have the body or the back to carry it all back up the stairs and into the house. I callled amvets to see if they could make an exception and they just wanted me to make another appt for another pick up. I took the day off already. I'm so disappointed because I wanted the money from the items to go to veterans. So now my father's life items are outside. I'm extremely upset. read more

I'm not sure if I'd been here before 2020. Maybe. But, since around May I've become a sort of regular. They have a great selection of DVDs that I peruse. All used and you have to make sure it isn't scratched, but you can find good things sometimes. They have a large selection of records and vhs tapes as well. Their bookshelves are not as well stocked. And then there's endless rows of clothing. The dvds cost $2 each, pricier than other area thrift stores. Easy parking. read more

I have found pieces to replace a broken cup or plate to re-complete my china, gorgeous purses, jewelry, beach towels, throw rugs, and frequently brand new or unused items. Amvets Thrift Store: An absolute mecca for thrift shoppers. This Amvets location is gigantic and a rip-roaring good time to check out. You can find some GEMS at Amvets. I plan on getting future Halloween costumes from this location. Sooo many clothes, so much furniture, and so much fun! Also, did I mention they offer discounts on certain days and holidays? 50% off on Memorial Day, for example. I do wish Amvets had a better selection of used books but I know there are other thrift shops (and used book shops) in the area I can go to for those. I've visited most of the thrift stores in the Buffalo area, both the big chains and local businesses. I would put this one at solidly below average in quality of goods and overall shopping experience, but still worth a perusal if you've got the time and are in the area. My biggest issue with this Amvets location is overall cleanliness. This offense is most egregious in the changing rooms, which are very small and covered in...yucky stuff? Idk. Used gum and other grime and grossness along the walls and fixtures, all in a space so small you're afraid you're going to graze one of the walls accidentally while changing. Also lots and lots of classic "I'm sucking his d*** in here" writing all across the walls, which wouldn't be so bothersome if it was clean, but because it was not...just yuck. The store itself is huge and mostly clothing, like many similar shops. Similar to a Goodwill or Salvation Army, there's a majority of lower quality items with some diamonds in the rough mixed in for you to find. I don't know if I was just primed to look for it because of the overall cleanliness of the establishment, but I do feel that the employees must have a lower standard for cleanliness of donated items based on the stained/dirty nature of many of the pieces that I came across. Kind of yuck, but just inspect your pieces carefully and wash them when you come home. Lovers of vintage clothing especially might greatly enjoy the hunt through the racks, I personally found a few really nice 80s blazers and dresses that could easily grace the racks of a more upscale thrift shop a la Second Chic. Prices are similar to a Goodwill or Salvation Army - climbing a bit, but still affordable. Homewares and furniture are available - a bit more miss than hit for me on my visit, but that's the nature of the beast. TL;DR - standard Amvets location with some hygiene issues. I'd probably come back at some point in the future, but it's not one of my top 5 in the area. read more

I've been shopping here for years. As others have said, like all thrift shops, it's hit or miss. They have an enormous selection. I usually limit myself to one or two areas in the store per visit. On Mondays they offer 25% off to people 55 and older. There are daily sales and they have a loyalty card where you can accrue points and save money on future purchases. There have been times when I have found nothing and other times when it's been an enormous haul. Always incredibly inexpensive, though their prices have recently gone up. The music is typically oldies and adds a fun vibe to the whole experience. read more

Do not use for furniture pickup!!! I can't get over how unprofessional these people are. I set up an appointment to have my couch, which was in great condition, picked up 3 weeks in advance. It was one of the only things left in my apartment that I had moved out of, so I took the day off to wait for them to come pick it up. It was 2pm on the day of pickup and no one had showed up. I called them, and they said they weren't coming because my couch was on the second floor. This was the first I had heard of this. So I went to my apartment office and begged the maintenance people to come help me move it downstairs. They were nice enough to do so. I called back to confirm that it had been moved, and the women said I was still listed on the route and they would call me 30 mins in advance. Fast forward to the next day, no phone call, my couch still sitting outside. I called and spoke to a supervisor and he said no one came because the couch was upstairs. I explained the situation and he said that they could reschedule a different time. At this point I had no way to move this couch again. They said they would come the next day. Had a huge rainstorm now my couch is ruined. My neighbor said they pulled up, barely looked at it and drove away. I'm still yet to get a phone call, email, anything. If I had known my couch was going to be totally ruined I would NEVER wasted my time. Couch is still outside now I have to find a way to dispose of it. read more

So far, this is my favorite thrift shop in Buffalo. They have a really nice mix of vintage and older stuff! I always check the furniture, clothing and miscellaneous items for little treasures. They also have coupons on the receipt for your next visit. Since moving apartments so much, I have started getting more into decorating. Amvets always seems to have cool vintage furniture pieces and random houseware things. I have also been impressed by the women's dresses which give off some awesome 70's vibes. Over this past month, I found a vintage wicker hamper, silk print scarf, and some great studio made pottery pieces for plants. read more

I can't believe no one's reviewed this place yet. This was my favorite thrift store to go to when I lived in Buffalo. It was not too far from the college I went to (and I loved the student discounts they offered), very large and had a lot of great stuff. Some of my finds were a sleek, long red leather jacket, tan 70's-style wedge sandals, Adidas stretch pants, and other great things. I'd usually leave with a huge bag of stuff at the end of the day. Thrift store warehouse. Furniture, aisles upon aisles of clothes, board games, picture frames, dishes, toys and all other possible hand-me-downs you could think of. I never got much into thrift store shopping, but I've purchased a few items from here with some success. My most embarrassing purchase were probably my swimming trunks. I was doing laps at LA Fitness next door, when my trunks met their end (the string fell off), so trying to find swimwear in January around North Buffalo was an unsuccessful feat until I came here. And of course, there they were. Used swimming trunks (it's almost like buying used underwear =\). I bought them. Didn't wash them and swam in them. Shhh. There is a lot to like about Amvets. It's cheap. It's arranged by size and well-maintained at that. Not perfect, but when you're getting pants for $5, you should be ok with a little discord. The selection of men's clothing was pretty good... more than I usually see. Another thing; Amvets doesn't (on the face of it, I hope, not researching it) have anything to do with Jesus. I love going to this location when I am thrift shopping, as I have always found nice items that are a bargain. The location has easy parking, is well lit, clean and tidy and all my encounters with workers and volunteers have been friendly and helpful. Donation here is very easy as well. You can schedule a pick up from home or drop things off in their garage, located in the back. There is always someone there to help and to give you a tax credit receipt. read more

Every time I come to Amvets, I have Macklemore "Thrift Shop" replaying. No shame on that. The store is a diamond in the rough. I found many shirts and pants that still have the price tag on. As a college student, 3 dollar shirts and jeans, I am not complaining. You really need to do some digging and you'll find what you need. The worker is very nice as well. I'm a big fan of buying second hand, and as with most thrift stores it can be hit or miss on any given day. Usually I go to AmVets to hunt for basics and keep my eyes open for the amazing...such as the silver, sparkly, wonder dress I found recently. I think clothes is this store's strong point though I've found other useful odds and ends as well, such as a CD rack for a dollar. Other notes- the staff has always been friendly, they accept donations whenever they are open and readily give you a receipt, and the parking lot is large with plenty of spaces available. The one day where AmVets gets really crazy is on Memorial Day when they have a big sale. read more

For used items that are given to them for free they charge way too much this is supposed to be so if your in short of funds for new you can afford like new items well not this company they only want to get rich not help those without extra dollars for example, they are charging $5-8 for a tee shirt I can buy online new for 3$. i have 20 boxes / bags of almost new items I wanted to donate. Can't tell you how many times I had to call. Spoke to very rude people who seem to now care. they picked up the stuff and let 5 boxes and a new adult walker. They ever left a receipt like I was told. called them back was hung up on twice and the last girl put me on hold and transfered me to a voice mail. I had to leave a message. hours later, still no call back and I have to know bring the bags back in. I feel like I am stepping on eggs shells around these people even though my family has support them of r over 40 years. Wondering if Amvets is worth this much of a bother, if they don't care why should I ! Very rude people. Best thrift store in Buffalo. I always find really cool stuff. Just went last weekend and found a dress perfect for a themed party Im going to next month. I've been going here for years though. This place is pretty much everything my dreams are made of: a building the size of an airplane hangar full of crumpled blazers, old bathrobes, Caribbean island gift shop t-shirts and musty sweaters as far as the eye can see -literally, from one end of the sweater rack I could not see the other end. Due to the sheer volume of stuff here, I wasn't able to go over everything as thoroughly as I would've liked, and I got there pretty close to closing time. But I did make off with a few goodies, including a grey blazer that's so wrinkled it looks like it was crumpled up in a ball inside a wet garbage bag in the bottom of a dumpster for the past decade. I'll definitely be wearing that to my next job interview. Might even wear it over my new bright blue Virgin Islands t-shirt. I was only in Buffalo for a few days, and only able to check out a few thrift stores, but I'd be surprised if this isn't the best one in town. read more

Okay, a solid 4 for nostalgia and selection. I've been shopping here for over ten years (since I moved up here to go to Buff State in Sept of 2001; we used to walk here then because no one had cars). I go at least half a dozen times a year, maybe more, as I still live super close (1.5 miles). I'm a thrift shop/yard sale junky - 90% of my stuff is used; not only does it give me access to more unique stuff but it has also saved me a butt load of money. My house has a very retro-meets-opium den look, not a "this looks like a catalog" vibe like my friends who have to have "new" everything. Amvets isn't the cleanest place (no fault of the workers; customers do some pretty disgusting, inconsiderate things), it hasn't been updated in forever, and there is absolutely nothing "hip" about it (other than the ironic "hipness" all thrift stores have). The workers are pretty friendly and rotate regularly as they are largely college kids. They do a pretty good job of keeping things picked up and organized despite customers constantly throwing things on the floor or leaving them somewhere other than where they found them. They have ample carts and parking. They are always PACKED to capacity with stuff - you have to have incredibly narrow tastes to not find something. They have some of the best bric-a-brac (the long row of shelves filled with random knick knacks, house wares, decor, etc for the uninitiated) in town. Their prices are very reasonable on these items, including cookware, dishes, storage containers, etc. I was able to furnish every room in my house with a vintage trash can (so tiny and cute!), score a bunch of planters and get copper bottom pots. They regularly have very nice vintage and modern furniture at reasonable prices. I dressed almost every window in my house with vintage, thermal lined drapes from this thrift store for about $7 a pair. They really cut down on heating and cooling bills - I looked for new ones like this and they were thin, crappy and cost $12 a panel! People need to get over their "that's used" phobia. If you knew how many people sweated on, handled and tried on your "new" clothes before you go them you wouldn't worry so much. This is what a washing machine/dry cleaner was invented for. read more

She's probably one of the most creative and stylish people I know so I was surprised when she was telling me how she buys most of her clothes at thrift stores. She's a big proponent of social justice particularly in regards to clothing, and was telling me how shopping at a thrift store is a great way to buy clothes without directly supporting clothing companies that use unethical production practices (i.e. sweatshops). There are some cool companies that produce clothes in-country but are naturally much more expensive. So she presents thrift stores as a middle ground where you're not directly supporting sweatshops. Thanks to Bethany, I often find myself here at Amvets. As one reviewer mentioned, it is definitely sometimes a scavenger hunt but isn't treasure more satisfying when found that way? This particular thrift store is very large and naturally can't afford to keep things organized as well as your local Macy's store. For the size and staffing, they do a good job. Other than clothes, they have a great selection of household and kitchen items as well as a nice record/LP section. Not many thrift shops can boast that. I also appreciate that they have a big bin right inside the front door where you can drop off donations - most thrift stores I've been to have you drive around back. One common complaint I've heard is that the clothes at thrift stores smell funny. They don't smell as bad as my dirty clothes hamper and I end up wearing those clothes, after I wash them of course. So I just throw the clothes I buy at the thrift store into my hamper to get washed with the rest of the smelly clothes - they come out smelling fresh. This store has a great selection and I always love the price tags. The icing on the cake is when someone compliments you on your outfit - little do they know you are rocking some fresh second-hand treasure. read more
