    Dosa

If you are looking for authentic yummy south Indian food then this is the place to come. I have been coming here from long and have tried most of their dosas and each one of them are too notch. Is this the place to bring a date? No It is inside the Indian grocery store and there is limited seating and nothing fancy. But this place is all about good food.

It's just a cafe set aside in an Indian market. It doesn't look like much, and they use all disposable plates and utensils, which I think is unfortunate. You'll find gruff employees sporadically manning the counter. However, a fair comparison for this place is not to some fine dining establishment, but to a fast food takeout joint. In that niche, Amma is a winner. This place offers a menu that seemed a bit wider than the other location in Vienna, and I finally took the chance to try a Jaipur paneer dosa, a large lentil-based crepe with spiced cheese filling. Honestly, I am not a big fan of their sambar (the soup used for dipping), but the dosa itself was crispy and the filling aromatic and hearty. Even this rather substantial item was under $10 with tax; everything here is cheap, vegetarian, and delicious. They haven't marked their menu for vegan or gluten-free, but given that trace ingredients may be present, they do have options for both. Of the twenty or so people that were eating in this small space while I was there, I was the only non-Asian, which is both a good sign (in that it must be decent food) and a bad thing (in that most of America still has not discovered the exciting world of South Indian cuisine). Some years ago, there was apparently an Amma Vegetarian Kitchen in the heart of Georgetown. I know rent is high in this town, but I really wish they'd come back to the District. We could use more of this.

Ordered chana bhatura and onion rava masala dosa. We got the food quickly and it was really yummy. The bhatura was soft and not too oily. Really loved the sambhar, full of veggies and fresh.

This Cafe is attached to the aditi spice depot grocery! The Cafe is so neatly maintained, quick service and much better overall that the Vienna Amma kitchen! We got the idli, dosa and pooris! The idlis were excellent steaming hot, freshly made and so tasty with the sambar! Ghee roast dosa was great too and so was pooris! Everything was so hot served! Reasonably priced!

Until now this might be the only place I know for snack items (tiffin we call it). Avg prices. Good quality. They are more of South Indian style especially Tamil and Kerala food. I like their dosa they are huge and tasty.

Amma's feast, all for under $10.

It was busy even in the middle of the afternoon. While, I would've been happy to see their rendition of one of the classics, I wanted to try something new and I cannot remember ever having had a misal pav, which is a sprouted, mung bean curry served with bread. They warned me that it would be spicy and it did have a decent kick. The bread was just enough to make the whole thing a finger food without needing any utensils. I also got a robustly spiced Samosa and some unsweetened chai. Come here, turned out to be a good decision for me because there are certainly times when I want and eat food, but do not want a giant meal. That being said ordering a couple of dishes here could get indulgent very quickly.

Taste, quality, value…read more Overall 4.5/5 I want to preface by saying that I don't generally give out 5 stars easily. However, my experience with Chaatwala surely deserved it. Food (1.75/2) - Majority of what we tried, we loved. I enjoyed the Chhole stuffed kulcha, chili paneer, Dahi puri, and Vada Pav. My kids liked the milder noodles. But the Puri Bhalla Chaat was something I could skip. I could see many places for improvement but for what this place offers, it is great. It's not trying to be fancy and so it's not charging you those prices. Prices seem fair and makes the food worth it. I would come back to try more varieties of their street food along with stuffed parathas and dosa/idli. Drinks (1/1) - Fresh juices and masala soda were on point. Perfect combination with the street food indulgence. They definitely were refreshing. However, I was disappointed with the masala chai that seemed watered down and lacking masala flavor. Decor (0.75/1) - Setting could be improved. There are fairly good art works on the walls and the tables. Reminiscent of India, they even have a chalk board with menu items. However, they can definitely improve by doing something with the drinks corner which seems dull and uninviting. Service (1/1) - now this place is not a fancy dining place at all. There aren't even people bringing the food to you. You have to go up, place an order, and wait until they call your name. However, they make it really easy to order, eat, and enjoy. You go to the front, put your order in and go back to your table. But they are really fast at preparing your order and the wait is very low even when the place is packed. After you are done eating, if there are any leftovers, they have kept to go boxes and utensils for you to pack it up your self. All the food is brought to you in compostable plates so once you're done, just throw it in the trash without worrying about the impact.

Decided to give the North Indian food a try and wasnt disappointed--kadai paneer is smoky with the appropriate combination (and balance) of spices. It is difficult to find good north indian paneer dishes in South indian cuisine oriented restaurants--but Mirch Dhamaka got it right. Sambhar, chutneys, sauce for the paneer is hot, a gentle reminder of our deteriorating heat tolerance levels. It was good hot, what you would find in a cafe in India. Star of the show--shahi tukda--gently sweet, cooked milk, garnished with nuts served with fried bread sticks, if churros were born in India--that is how they would look and taste. Talking about cafes, for those of you who have had dosas and idlies in India, the ambience of Mirch Dhamaka is exactly how it should be, a cafe like, where you are tearing into a dosa with your hands or splashing chutneys around. Ravi, who has been our server a few times now, is quick, attentive, and kind. He makes good recommendations, your water cups are never empty. Of course we pounced on the food before taking pictures.

The flavors were strong all around. The idli were the best thing I got, and had ample curry leaves and texturally diverse spices. Idli come with an array of chutneys and sambar by default, but in this case I had trouble even using those because the flavor starts out so strong. My chickpeas and okra were also delicious, if on the indulgent side. Getting manchow soup to go turned out not to be a great decision, as the crispy noodles had become soggy by the time I got around to unpacking my soup. Overall, high on salt and oil, but a diverse and interesting set of tastes.
