There are many restaurants that claim to offer street food, but this one appears to take the concept quite seriously and has a menu with pretty much exclusively things that would be considered in that category. It was busy even in the middle of the afternoon. While, I would've been happy to see their rendition of one of the classics, I wanted to try something new and I cannot remember ever having had a misal pav, which is a sprouted, mung bean curry served with bread. They warned me that it would be spicy and it did have a decent kick. The bread was just enough to make the whole thing a finger food without needing any utensils. I also got a robustly spiced Samosa and some unsweetened chai. Come here, turned out to be a good decision for me because there are certainly times when I want and eat food, but do not want a giant meal. Taste, quality, value. Overall 4.5/5 I want to preface by saying that I don't generally give out 5 stars easily. However, my experience with Chaatwala surely deserved it. Food (1.75/2) - Majority of what we tried, we loved. I enjoyed the Chhole stuffed kulcha, chili paneer, Dahi puri, and Vada Pav. My kids liked the milder noodles. But the Puri Bhalla Chaat was something I could skip. I could see many places for improvement but for what this place offers, it is great. It's not trying to be fancy and so it's not charging you those prices. Prices seem fair and makes the food worth it. I would come back to try more varieties of their street food along with stuffed parathas and dosa/idli. Drinks (1/1) - Fresh juices and masala soda were on point. Perfect combination with the street food indulgence. They definitely were refreshing. However, I was disappointed with the masala chai that seemed watered down and lacking masala flavor. Decor (0.75/1) - Setting could be improved. There are fairly good art works on the walls and the tables. Reminiscent of India, they even have a chalk board with menu items. However, they can definitely improve by doing something with the drinks corner which seems dull and uninviting. Service (1/1) - now this place is not a fancy dining place at all. There aren't even people bringing the food to you. You have to go up, place an order, and wait until they call your name. However, they make it really easy to order, eat, and enjoy. You go to the front, put your order in and go back to your table. But they are really fast at preparing your order and the wait is very low even when the place is packed. After you are done eating, if there are any leftovers, they have kept to go boxes and utensils for you to pack it up your self. All the food is brought to you in compostable plates so once you're done, just throw it in the trash without worrying about the impact. read more

The place is huge and has some play area in the back which the kids loved. That said the food was just OK! The falooda was made fresh and tasted great, so was the Vada Pav. Slick spot. We had the Pani Puri and one other Delhi dish -- it's attached in the photo, I believe it's the Aloo Tikki but I might be mistaken. It was good. One dish had lot of yogurt and I liked that. The Delhi dish was multi-flavorful and it was pretty cool taste-wise. Sweet and spicy and tangy like. Alright. Only minus point was it took a long time for food. Had to stand in line for second dish and someone cut in front of me, but that's aite. It's "all good". But the wait time of half hour was a little egregious. Might've been close to rush hour so it's whatever. I'll definitely be back. This is the place for you if you are looking for good vegetarian Indian food. I had the vegetarian burger which was a potato patty on bun with a side of fries. This is good to try if you aren't sure what to have or if you are new to Indian food. Order at the counter and wait until your number is called to go get your food. You go to a restaurant and order some 10 items and everything turns out great! How likely is that? That was our experience here. Came here for the first time and liked everything we ate. Pretty good for a chaat spot in the DMV. My parents and I were craving some street food, so my dad mentioned we should try this spot. We don't get a lot of opportunity to eat Indian street food, so it's like a treat for us. Note: the day I came the menu was not updated (per a previous photo shared). I was disheartened that they didn't have the Paneer Kati Rolls. The owner was understanding, but I do hope they bring it back! Maybe introduce the Bombay sandwich??? I'd come back for sure! Here are some of the items we got: Vada Pav- was a bit spicy for my parents, but I loved it! The vada was perfectly fried and moist! The chutney was not too liquidy, and right amount of dry garlic chutney. Each part complimented well and not overpowering at all. The Pani puri/ (Gol Gappa- For those that may come at me) was delicious. It is so easy to mess up making the pani part, and I've had BAD pani puri before. I can't remember a time when the puris actually stayed together and not break apart! Bhel- I crave this all day, every day! Just making this delightful mix is an ART people. The mamra (puffed rice), sev (fried noodles) were crunchy and not soggy! I can safely say that I demolished a significant part with no shame. Dahi Bhalla Chaat- Don't let the photo fool you- this was great too. For the unfamiliar, bhalla is just fried dough that's soaked in yogurt, mixed with the same chutneys as Bhel, and Pomegranate is used as a topping. Great to share, or just for yourself! Irani Chai- not pictured but a Mumbai staple! When the Iranis (Parsis) came to Mumbai, they created their version of Masala Chai using condensed milk. Fresh fluffy bread and chickpeas in a semi spicy sauce with pickled onions and a spicy (I think it was rhubarb ) chunks. Super delicious and adorable. I will Definitely go again! Chaatwala is an eatery that offers Indian street food that's vegetarian-focused - we came here for an early lunch, and we ordered the following: +a Mixed Veg Pakoda - spiced mixed vegetable fitters; these were supposed served with a side of tamarind and mint cilantro chutney, but we only received the tamarind sauce; I'm thinking it's because we requested there to be no fresh cilantro on any of our dishes so they made the decision to not include the mint cilantro sauce; there were about 5 pieces, with the batter thick, crispy, and seasoned well +Aloo Puri - spiced potato curry served with a fried wheat bread; was not a fan of this curry, as it was super thin and had an off taste to it; the fried wheat bread was okay +Dahi Bhalla - lentil dumplings soaked in yogurt and served with mint cilantro, dates, and jaggery chutneys, garnished with crunchy boondi; I didn't know that this was a cold dish, as the menu didn't mention this; the dumplings were more like balls of dough that was super dry inside, and the sauces that they were sitting in didn't help; we didn't like this at all +Chole Bhature - spicy chickpea curry with a side of deep fried bread; the curry was okay, but I felt as if it could have been more savory and creamy; the deep fried bread that this dish was served with was super delicious and probably one of the best breads we've had! We specially drive there to have Cholle Bhature, that what tempted us the most from their menu. Yessss! I'm one of those who check the menu before visiting the restaurant, LOL! But sadly, they didn't had cholle bhature for that evening So, we ordered Stuffed Cholle Kulche and Pav Bhaji. I really liked Cholle Kulche - cholle were a bit different in taste as compared to the authentic cholle kulche from India, little tangy than usual. But it clubbed well with kulche, together it tasted good. About Pav Bhaji, bhaji was amazingly good in taste but pav was stale, which spoiled the whole pav bhaji experience. We visited the restaurant almost around their closing time. So I would definitely like to visit them again, to try few more items from their menu. read more

Loved the greeting by the cashier uncle saying "Namashkaar" at the entry! The ambience shows that it's been designed thoughtfully. It's a self service place so the ordering is quite quick. Chai could've been a little strong or as we say "kadak". The menu is well balanced and has some very good options, I was tempted by looking at the Chole Bhature. Bhatura's were good, chole curry came out to be a little bland (wonder if it's to match the American palette) but the onions & pickle helped balance it out nicely. The Papdi Bhalla Chaat was great! I thought the chole in the chole bhatura was a bit flavorless. The food came pretty fast and I thought it was priced very well. There's a little game area with ping pong, carrom, and other activities. The carrom board definitely needs some powder though. read more
