I've lived in this area for over a decade, and it always felt like we were missing a place that serves authentic South Indian breakfast. Sangeetha Bhavan finally fills that gap. The food is excellent--authentic, comforting, and tastes homemade. Unlike many restaurants that overload dishes like pongal, parotta, and upma with butter, oil, or ghee, the food here is light, flavorful, and easy on the stomach without compromising on taste. It proves that great food comes from quality ingredients and proper preparation, not excessive fat. The only area that could use some improvement is the service. A warmer, more welcoming staff would make the overall experience even better and encourage customers to keep coming back. We were visiting friends in the area. We decided to try this place. Absolutely one of the best restaurants that serves South Indian vegetarian thali. Lots of great options from sambar, vegetarian curries, rasam, pappad, sweet and rice. I went there right after workout. I ate the entire thali as it reminded me of my days in India eating thali at the andhra mess. Banana Bajji was nice and crispy as well. Went very well with the chutney and sambar. This was a delicious meal. This thali has a lot of different choices. I think I liked the chickpeas the most. The budgi was delicious too. Service was fast and efficient. This restuarant took over the old Harvest of India. I've been wanting to try it for a while and finally made the trip. They had an interesting range of dishes, Indian and Malaysian. I didn't hesitate to skip the Malaysian items. I ordered the vegetarian thaali, which seemed to be the popular dish; also ordered the Paneer butter masala. The thaali was okay, the curries were extremely salty. The Paneer butter masala wasn't spicy, but I was told it was tasty. We would probably return for that, and maybe to try another item. The prices were reasonable for the area, they don't have buffet unfortunately. It was quite busy when we arrived (after 1pm). The staff were attentive and taking care of all the tables in a timely manner, even if there were only 2 servers. The restaurant itself didn't seem extremely clean and decor seemed a little outdated. There is plenty of parking shared by neighboring businesses. Would I return? maybe if I'm in the area and hungry. read more

Excellent late lunch... we shared a podi uthappam and gongura vankaya koora (eggplant). Hubby also enjoyed a mango lassi! Great place and always surprised it's not more busy. Only wish they had a menu with descriptions.... Since we gave no clue what things are always called we had to do a lot of searching... Hidden gems... in the past gave enjoyed the thali special and hubby had a garlic curry he thought amazing... so worth figuring it out! read more

This restaurant I assume is Tamil because I ordered a Chennai set dosa and vada curry. Despite seeing a range of appealing menu options, including a mouthwatering channa bhatura ordered by the next table over, I thought I'd try something new for me. This dish is a spread of spongy lentil-based pancakes with a curry of what seems like a reuse of last night's leftover lentil fritters (a common culinary conceit to get the best use out of things). The curry was strongly flavored, and the spongy texture worked great as a dipper. It was an interesting dish, but a wide South Indian menu of lentil-based delicacies tested my resolve as I always want to try all of them. A cutting chai was a nice way to wash things down. Perhaps more notable was the fact that while this place was like a lot of suburban strip mall spots in terms of ambiance, it had better service than other such restaurants I've been to. They took care to make sure that my large bowl of curry didn't spill as it was close to tipping over. For those uninitiated in the wonders of South Indian cuisine, they seemed willing to take the time to explain the menu. My guess is that you could probably just point to a random line on the menu, though, and even if you can't pronounce what's there you'd be okay ordering it. read more

It's easy to park in this particular strip mall. The waitress spoke maybe eight words overall the entire visit, although thankful for being seated promptly. She handed me both menus which I found odd. We ordered Papdi Chaat that lacked flavor. I then got my dinner which was the lukewarm Thali and waited for 20 minutes for my spouses only to be told that they didn't have it. We got our naan at the end of the meal. The worst part was the cleanliness of the place. Not only was the floor sticky, it was filthy which gave me pause about the cleanliness of other areas. This is my third time here so we have it a fair chance. The only friendly person was the young girl swiping our card at the end. read more

I find it unfortunate that the Indian food in Herndon continues to disappoint me, given the density of Indian diaspora in the surrounding area. While you might be led to presume that the local culinary scene is exceptional, given anticipated competition, it is sadly not the case; particularly so when it comes to this restaurant. The service is quite slow and our server forgot to bring the drinks we had ordered throughout the entirety of the meal. After we reminded him that we had not received the drinks and that we would like for them to be removed from the receipt if we do not have them did he proceed to bring out the coffee; which, mind you, did not meet our expectations at all. The food itself was mediocre and incredibly oily. All In all, I wish them luck but I do not think I will be returning anytime soon. For those who crave a traditional South Indian vegetarian experience, this may be an option. read more

This restaurant is brand new and a much-needed addition to the Herndon restaurant scene. The owners have moved from a carry-out stall at Lotte Market across the parking lot to their own brick-and-mortar sit-down facility, and the food is still wonderful. The decor is understated but very attractive, and the music is just what you'd hope to hear in an Indian restaurant. The menu is all vegetarian and offers many traditional southern Indian dishes (including dosas) along with other standard Indian favorites (including my own personal favorite, malai kofta). Portions are generous, and the chef's use of spices is masterful. As far as I'm concerned, Sangeethas Bhavan serves the best Indian food in the Herndon -Reston area. The staff is beyond exceptional. They are gracious, helpful, friendly, and willing to work with patrons to ensure an outstanding dining experience One very nice feature (to my way of thinking) is the lack of a lunch buffet. By not having one, Sangeethas Bhavan can (and does) stay open all day. No more waiting for the end of that dead space between the closing of the buffet and the opening of dinner service! If you haven't tried this place yet, please consider going. We need it to prosper and stay open for a long, long time. read more

The number of servers were insufficient to cater to the crowd on a Saturday afternoon and being a newer establishment we can understand. Ambience could have been better. Just 4 months back has come to this restaurant and was super happy to finally find an authentic dosa restaurant. 4 months later, the experience is unfortunately mediocre. 1. We walked in just past 1 and eagerly awaited to order Onion Rava Dosas. The waiter said it would take 20 -25 minutes and that regular dosa would just take 10 minutes. So we ordered Regular onion dosas and ordered Coffees to start with. 2. After 15 minutes they come and say that they ran out of coffee! And when we said atleast get the dosas soon - their reply they have to take care of TO GO orders !!!! 3. After 45 minutes we get our first dosa and waiting still for 3 more dosas!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4. This is on a Sunday :( 5. We ordered masala dosas and they came with no masala 6. They ran out of chutney when we asked about it. Tried Sangeetha's on a Sunday afternoon lo at a friend's recommendation. We were part of the late lunch crowd. They had a steady steam of patrons walking in for lunch even at 3 pm. The restaurant has nice decor. Not too large, maybe 20 tables or so. I ordered the Mysore masala dosa, that came with sambar and 3 different chutneys. The sambar was delicious, the chutneys, in my opinion, could do with more spice. Although it was just the right level of spice for my kids. My kiddo got the plain dosa. So now about the dosas, they were crispy and ghee laden. The Mysore chutney used on my dosa was a tad too tomato-y for me. Mysore masala is supposed to be spicy. My hubby got the tiffin combo that came with vada ( Indian savory doughnut shaped thing made with rice and lentil) , Idli ( think of it like steamed rice doughnut holes), kitchdi ( lentil rice porridge) and a gulab jamun (Indian doughnut in sugar syrup) . All of them were delicious. The service was fine too. Food came out quickly. Restaurant was neat and the staff was polite and quickly cleared out tables, although there was no rush while we were there. read more

My family and I chose to try this place after having some of the restaurant's food at a family friend's event, and I can strongly say that it was worth the visit. Portion sizes for the appetizers were adequate, just enough so you would still have room for the main course. These flavorful main courses were accompanied by a set of delectable condiments and dips ranging from various chutneys to sambar. Service was also very nice, despite it being crowded during dinner time. Overall, a really good pure South Indian vegetarian restaurant with authentic and homely tasting food that can definitely be considered trustable and reliable. The first impression is of a slovenly restaurant with slow, lethargic staff, a couple of employees who seem to need training in the service industry. The carpeting was strewn with remnants of food, and hadn't been cleaned. After a wait, we were led to a table, but we insisted on the carpet around and beneath the chairs and table being cleaned first. We were told that the vacuum cleaner was not working. As we kept insisting, finally the employees cleaned the area with a broom. They forgot to lay out place settings (forks, spoons, glasses), and to serve water. The food was cold, lacked genuine ingredients (lemon rice without lemon), and was too salty or too spicy (the vegetable pakodas), or just unprepared (papdi chat with the crackers not broken up into edible pieces). Service was slow, and the waiter forgot one of the orders. On the whole, this was an experience we will not repeat, and cannot recommend. Restaurants like this give Indian food a bad reputation. Food was very ok. 1) Medu vada had too much flour taste in it 2) Fried rice was like kids rice. Just salt and soya sauce no flavor 3) Mysore masala dosa was very blend. No taste of Mysore chutney. Sambhar was very ok as well 4) Rasam was not good 5) Chutneys are very ok 6) Podi dosa had very lightly flavored podi too. Only kottu parotta and rava dosa were decent Service was not great. They completely forgot to make one of our orders. We got one dosa after we were almost done with the dinner. They were out for most of the food by 7:00pm. No tiffins available. No lassi available. This is a solid South Indian restaurant. I've been twice now and had a good experience both times. The staff is always helpful and attentive. The poondu milagu kuzhambu (curry with whole garlic cloves) is my favorite so far. I like that I always see mostly Indian clientele eating here - that's usually a good sign that the food has not been diluted to suit American tastes. They're definitely not messing around with the spice here - it's got some serious burn! My daughter asked me today to take her back for a masala dosa. I'm so sad I wanted to love this place... my boyfriend and I went here to pick up lunch and I got the palak paneer. I have had this from a ton of restaurants in the past and didn't think any of my allergies would be in the food.... After taking a few bites of it I started to feel sick called the restaurant where they insisted that there were no nuts in the food... I stupidly enjoyed the rest of the paneer and about 10 minutes later I had cold sours forming around my mouth (this for me means it's the start of an allergic reaction usually from cashews or pistachios but I have a ton of allergies so not 100% sure) after getting home I was feeling nausea and I unfortunately was not able to hold the food in. I called the restaurant after this episode and asked for my money back... they said that this is the second time someone asked for their money back today and they refused me a refund. So sad this happened I wouldn't recommend coming here if u have a sensitive tummy or allergies. read more
