Very disappointing visit to the steak house. Extremely slow service (nearly 2 hours) coupled with an awful steak. I had a ribeye that tasted like a cheap grocery store steak with a ton of fat. Will not be going back. Worst meal I have had at that price point. read more

We just finished having the Threshers Dinner. We had. Broasted chicken and turkey for our two meats. The chicken was good as was the turkey. It was a meal that is very filling and tasty. But nothing leaves you saying I can't wait till next time. We came for the play and got hooked into the meal. Recently had dinner at Amish Acres as part of a rehearsal dinner for a wedding my wife was in. We showed up at about 6:15 for reservations at 6:30. After about a 5 to 10 minute wait we were taken to a back dining room that appeared to be set aside for large groups. There were about 40 of us and they already had all the table placements set up with desert (pie) already on the table. Many of us choose our seats based on which pie was at the table! There was even some switching going on.... Once everyone was seated we were promptly presented with a choice of beverage that was brought around on a cart so that we did not have to wait for someone to take our order. There were about 8 people or so waiting on our entire group. As the meal had already been selected for us, they brought out the ham and bean soup shortly after the drinks were served. The bread was very tasty and soft and went well with the soup. After the soup had been served they started bringing out the main course that consisted of potatoes with gravy, roast beef, stuffing, beef and noodles, and fried chicken. The various dishes were brought out on plates that were to be shared around the table. Once the meal had been served and some time had passed they walked around asking if anyone wanted seconds of any of the dishes. When one of our table asked about getting some more fried chicken the server offered to get whatever piece they wanted (leg, thigh, etc.). All of the food I tried was pretty good, nothing out of this world though in my opinion. I personally enjoy the Essenhaus near Middleberry. Everyone we dealt with was very friendly and all the servers took very good care of us. If you have a large gathering planned, I would definitely recommend Amish Acres. They were ready for our group of 40 as the food had been prepared in anticipation of our arrival. read more

Going to an "Amish" restaurant,i expect good homemade food.We arrived 15 minutes after they opened.and it took us 20 minutes to get seated(4 people) When we were seated,we notice over 75% percent of the tables empty.Apparently making you wait gives you time to buy stuff in the waiting area.The"Amish" girls had tattoos and dirty aprons. It was buffet sunday,the chicken was okay but the ham was dried out deli ham,Yuck!The mashed potatoes were made from instant and the bean soup was from a can and they threw in the nasty deli ham.The noodles were not fresh made and very watery. Service was horrible as they only have 1 girl for food,one girl for drinks and 1 girl for desserts,they need to assign a waitress for each section.When we went to leave,we were told we had to go to the end of the line where people were lined up out the door to get a table.I refused to get in a line for 10 minutes to pay my bill.I heard they usually have you pay before you go in but they didn't have us do that.We left a tip,only to find out they automatically add it to your bill. The place is definitely a tourist trap however I was here to try the food. I came for lunch and it wasn't that expensive. I had the beef and noodles (which was a starch fest since they put it over mashed potatoes) however it was really good. I also got green beans for a side which were well flavored. I also had sassafras tea which was very good and a bit different for this Texas boy. Like mixing tea and root beer but I definitely approved. I also tried their Kolsch beer which was an incredibly smooth and tasteful ale that was well balanced. I've been to this place several times throughout my life (school trips, family get togethers) as a kid I always hated it. I went there recently to see nothing much has changed. There's nothing special about this place that screams "come back". There's nothing significant about the food or memorable about anything here. I unfortunately have to give this establishment three stars only because there really wasn't much to the place. It's hard to explain but it was as if something was missing like magic mountain without any amusement park rides, roller coasters, log ride, kids rides just a place with a few standing structures. Don't get me wrong everyone working there were extremely friendly and helpful happy to interact talk share stories with you but the overall experience wasn't memorable. I mean let's face it when you advertise yourself as Amish Acres Historical Farm and Heritage Resort that sounds like a big deal I mean you're expecting the wow factor. The manager of the restaurant is a very rude man. I brought to his attention the fried chicken was not cooked properly because there was blood. He was checking with a thermometer, placing it incorrectly on the chicken by the way. Upon addressing him he kept his back turned during the entire time of trying to show him the chicken that I and my 6 year old almost consumed. All he could tell me is that is what cooked properly, which was not the truth. There is an extremely small menu of choices to eat also. We like the area's Amish meals of broasted chicken, mashed potatoes, etc. Good comfort food. Bur Amish Acres was not terrific. One of the biggest problems was that nothing was hot just warm. My husband and I have been coming to Amish Acres and the surrounding Amish area for over twenty years and look forward to the broasted chicken meals. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the Thresher's Dinner we were served on 8/1/18. The service, despite the restaurant being more than half empty, was very slow. Our waitress was very pleasant and did apologize several times for the slow service; but, did not give any indication as to any issues with the food, etc. While the slow service was annoying, our real disappointment came with the meal itself. The broasted chicken (which keeps us coming back to the area time and again) was dry and tough. The roast beef was dry, the dressing was dry and dark brown on the bottom and the gravy had visible flour lumps. The dessert tray was not refilled between guests, so your choice was limited to those pies not chosen by the previous guest. We observed one of the trays sitting out during our entire meal - not ideal for cream pies. In addition, three pieces of silverware on our table that had encrust food that had apparently not been removed in the dishwasher. I sent an e-mail two days later and received a response from the Chief Operating Officer indicating he would contact me the following Monday or Tuesday (this was the weekend of their art fair and he was understandably busy); however, it's been over a month and I have not been contacted by him. In the past, we've enjoyed our experiences at Amish Acres; but, after this dinner experience and lack of promised response we will not be returning. Since this posting we have been contacted by the Chief Operating Officer with an apology. Since my previous rating was based in part on the lack of response, I've changed my rating. read more

This is my second visit. The last one was 25 years ago. Good memories from that visit, not so much for this visit. A 45 minute wait to be seated and dining room is 1/3 full. My first impression was nobody knew what they were suppose to do. Very disjointed. Then we get the waitress who got up on the wrong side of the bed. Bitched and complain. That's all she did. We had to ask her to take our food order Refill our water glasses, bring us dessert and the check. Her name was Shelby. Talking about the food is the same as many people state. Canned, cheap bottom of the barrel. Cheap cut of ham and turkey. So-so bread and low quality desserts. Potatoes were blah as was the gravy. Sweet pickles way to sweet. Just a poor meal at a place that's living off a memory. Take a pass on The food and gift store. Nothing is made on site. Some of the buildings they sell food in smell moldy.(Fudge store). read more

The Round Barn Theater at Amish Acres focuses completely on musical theater. I have been to some musicals before that haven't been done in a major city that have been hard on the ears, to say the least. This is not true of the productions at the Round Barn Theater. The actors and actresses can sing on-key (or at least on-key enough for a tone deaf gal like me). The costumes and sets are simple but fit with the musicals that they're performing. Overall, it's a fairly impressive show for the price you're paying. And, it's less of a pain than hitting up a show in Chicago. read more

Worst service ever. We were a party of 2, and had our order taken. It went downhill from there. Our food was brought out , and it was not what we ordered. The waitress, there was only one, did not come back. Ever. She catered to the larger groups of people, returning to their tables several times. I'm guessing, but I suppose there are more $$$ in tips from the larger groups. We paid for what little food we did receive, after arguing with the cashier about what we owed. We would not pay for food we did not receive and that seemed to make the cashier mad. We left, never to return. It's a stretch to give this place one star. Awful, awful place. This place is okay, if you are okay with NOT seeing a single Amish person. No Amish people around. They have few buildings that used to belong to Amish that they show you which takes about 15 minutes. You can ride tractor wagon on their property and horse buggy into the woods, and that's it, definitely not worth 20 bucks. Their restaurant has food way below average, not worth another 20 bucks (per person) Amish acres are much commercialized just the fact that they take credit cards should speak for itself. We were in Granger, In visiting family and they took us to Amish Acres. We took the Farm wagon ride, house tour, and thresher dinner. We enjoyed the tour and the thresher dinner. We did have a long wait to be seated and the service was slow. There was a wedding reception going on so it reduced the number of tables from the public. The lemonade is delicious. My brother and I used to come here before the new owners took over, so we were curious to see the changes and to try the restaurant (renamed the Lasalle Farm & Table). They have changed the menu - instead of a thrasher style meal where the server brings out separate dishes, including the meat choices, they now have what is called the Farm Feast. Each person can pick his / her own starter (salad, soup) and meat entree. The meat entree has also increased to include meatloaf, beef brisket, and fish. The server then brings the entire meal to you on one plate. We were surprised at the generous portions (I couldn't finish mine) and how delicious everything was. Everything was tasty, fresh, and didn't have that canned / processed taste. I was even able to take my leftovers with me. We were so impressed that we decided this will be our go to place for meals when in the Nappanee / Shipshewanna area. It was even better (much better) than Das Eisenhaus in Middleberry. Terrible service, serving tasteless food. They actually bill it as the thrashers dinner, family style served homemade food. What a joke, maybe if you never cooked anything you might think something was homemade. Instant mashed potatoes and Luke warm un seasoned green beans. The bean soup is the only thing they may have made on site, not just warmed. For a party of two they served us 2 pieces of chicken. I ask for another piece of chicken and eventually after asking the second Time she brought 3 more pieces. Good enough 5 pieces for 2 persons is fine but the sides are not even edible . Disappointed! Perhaps I misinterpreted the web site. I expected to tour a working Amish farm, to eat a home style meal and my daughter wanted to see soap making and to ride a horse-drawn wagon. The glitzy web pages should have alerted me; glitz is not the Amish way. One enters the restaurant through the souvenir shop, complete with its very non-Amish "credit cards accepted", electronic cash register, telephone and PA system. The meal was good and plentiful but not great and everything seemed to be freshly prepared, not canned. Our server was probably the most attentive but unobtrusive we have ever had. Too bad she spoke so much English (non-Amish) teen slang (awesome! like super! no problem) My daughter's expectation of a horse-drawn wagon ride and soap making were dashed when we were told that the soap making had been cancelled today and the horse in the web site photos had been replaced by a very non-Amish tractor! The tour guide had to use a very non-Amish PA system to be heard over the noise of the tractor. The tour itself consisted of a quick circle of the grounds with a stop at the now defunct schoolhouse, about ten minutes total. The guide may have been Amish; she at least was in costume. Her script was delivered in an unpleasantly shrill, bored and boring, rapid, expressionless voice. She was so well practiced and bored in her role that she could point to each feature of the tour behind her back, before we reached it, without turning toward it. The walking tour was led by a yawning teen, equally adept at reciting her script in the manner as the other guide but fortunately she did so in a pleasant tone. Her recitation was interrupted by frequent, open mouth yawns. I suspect she, too, was bored. During both tours, we helpfully were informed that the gift shops had items of interest for sale. The shops were typical of tourist traps. Lots of tacky, over-priced junk that can be found elsewhere along with a few items perhaps unique to Amish Acres. Who knows if any of it is made or produced by Amish. I have no idea who owns or runs the very non-Amish Amish Acres. I doubt any Amish are involved except perhaps a few employees. One would get a better "Amish experience" by parking in the lot and watching REAL Amish riding by in their horse-drawn buggies. Please, no gawking, pointing, etc; they are not on display. And no photos of them, either. Respect their dignity; they have more of it than Amish Acres. Amish Acres wreaks of commercialism. It is a tourist trap. read more

OUT-OF-TOWNERS -- READ THIS: First of all, do a little research before lashing out at Amish Acres. This is NOT a working Amish farm, though Nappanee is a very Amish community. Anyway, Amish Acres is still a historical destination and certainly worth the visit. Take note that many of the buildings (cider mill, etc.) have been relocated to this destination in order to preserve their Amish histories and to share them with visitors. Yes, there is a brief buggy ride, and yes, the guide speaks over a loudspeaker. Yes, there is electricity all around. No, you will not observe Amish families from behind a glass casement as they milk cows and care for their young (give me a break, folks). Yes, if you actually take the time to drive around Nappanee, you will probably get stuck behind an Amish family in a buggy. And yes, if you live nearby, the Amish will happily butcher and prepare your chickens for a small fee, as they have done for us. But as for Amish Acres itself, simply consider it Nappanee's educational museum/restaurant. For small-town Indiana, this place is fascinating. My husband and I went here yesterday for his birthday dinner. We ordered the chicken dinner ($14.98 per adult). Another reviewer complained that they only give you two pieces of chicken. Well, true--but YOU GET SECONDS. AND THIRDS. It is all-you-can-eat. If you want more, just ask for more. Also, the broasted chicken was amazing as it had a wonderful flavor. The food was overall outstanding. The service was friendly. Would I recommend that you visit Amish Acres? Absolutely. I would also advise you to take the time to read the history on the back of the menu and, following lunch or dinner, explore the grounds and read the histories posted at each building as well. Try to appreciate what Amish Acres has done in preserving as much Amish history as they could. **I would also like to add, this place is not a tourist trap. This was our second visit. The first time was Mother's Day with a wonderful buffet. However today's meal was served family style and the service was poor. Had to ask her three times for additional food, drinks, etc. She could not , or would not, focus on her job. After asking for additional plates of food, and waiting at least ten minutes, she came back to our table to ask if everything was okay. Still no additional food. She brought refills for drinks to two members of our party while ignoring the other two who needed refills too. All in all it was a very frustrating dining experience. If it hadn't been for the fun people we were with, the whole meal would have been a bust. The dining room wasn't even half full; No excuse for the lack of service. This was a nice time on a beautiful fall day. I left with two adorable Amish dolls from the Round Barn Theater and a large grocery bag of takeout from the restaurant. It's not a huge place, but enjoyable regardless. Give yourself about three hours or more to take it all in; there is a carriage ride around the property, a farmhouse tour, a half-hour documentary film, tractor ride, restaurant, museum, huge gift shop, and several food shops full of goodies. read more

The mashed potatoes were hard, the gravy lumpy, the beef and noodles tasteless, don't waste your money here. Very overpriced at $19.95 a person. We asked for more stuffing and they brought us chicken, we asked for coffee that took 10 minutes before we got it, ordered peanut butter pie for dessert and got a piece of coconut cream pie! Wow! Dinner was awesome! Hubby and I were out for an early anniversary weekend and had one of the best meals. Ordered the family style Thresher's Meal and was not disappointed. Chicken was cooked to perfection and delicious. The beef melted in your mouth and the rest of the dinner items were yummy. Finished our meal with pecan and shoofly pie. Very tourist oriented. The hotel was clean, nice and included a hot breakfast bar. Tour including horse and buggy was good. When we went to Restaurant on site, it was EMPTY on Friday dinner time suprisingly so. However, the Thesher Dinner was small portions (yes they do give you more when asked but the first attempt was small for 2 people and it was pricey at $20.00/each. Also the food did not taste like a REAL Amish meal that we have tasted at other areas in Indiana. It was bland, (soup was cold); the bread and desserts were the highlite of the meal and the buildings selling fudge ($18-$20.00pd), were over priced. The Barn with the play was EXCELLENT. This is a must visit for my wife and I. Prefer to leave the kids at home and take our time touring the house and grounds, take a buggy ride, visit the little shops and of course have the threshers meal. SUCH delicious food! All you can eat, and a piece of pie that we always have to take home because you're so stuffed there's no way you can eat any more, delicious as it is.
