This fall, we needed our roof replaced and hired a contractor that was recommended by a neighbor. The process extended well over a month with the general having subbed out all aspects of the job to other contractors that not only daily were unsupervised, performed shoddy work requiring multiple call backs almost every day, but also damaged multiple parts of the house including our air conditioner. Our hard-earned money had these contractors dump roofing materials, pieces of Hardie siding, flashing from siding work, nails, etc., into our AC unit. This, of course, was unnoticed until the unit kicked on and a cyclone of bad and carless decisions by our roofing company clanged around damaging the coil and fan, spewing what it could up through the top. The costs and stress of the roofing work had already put us past the scope of what were prepared to handle. Fortunately, before I could yet again look up at the sky and ask why every contractor brought bad luck, I pulled up Bartlett's number. We had used them for a furnace check earlier in the year. They picked up immediately, and listened. Not, 'you're matter is important to us...you'll hear back in a few days.' They were as concerned about what had happened, not just through our long ordeal with the roofers but for the AC unit they installed. Bartlett said they would have someone come out ASAP as our roofer wanted to open the AC himself so that he could inspect and clean it on his own. That wasn't going to happen. Vince came out and assessed the unit and cleaned it out. He was extremely helpful in going over the damage to our unit that was only about 7 years old, asked what our intentions were as far as if we were looking to repair the unit, live with the damage to it, or replace it. He explained and fairly documented each option going over the pros and cons of each taking into account our current indoor equipment, ductwork, and performance expectations. His documentation helped us work with our roofer to understand the cost of their damages. We made the decision that repairing the damaged unit would be much of the cost a new unit would be. Vince had given us multiple options for our budget with zero push to sell us any of them. He continued to be transparent on each choice. We decided on a new Lennox 4-ton unit with matching evaporator coil. As Vince had been, every person from Bartlett whether on the phones or those that arrived for the install treated us like we were part of their family and respected our house as such. The install team was great and made sure any changes to our ductwork/etc we understood especially since the new unit is the new R454B type which required some additional required sensors, etc. After install, I had some questions on the unit and its efficiency due to confusing government energy guide labeling and Vince spent an entire weekend making sure everything was correct. Because a larger unit was installed, some things had to be modified for the indoor coil and space to make some of the changes was limited. Vince took the time to come out and look at everything and listen and came up with a plan to make everything as perfect as possible. I do not know any other business or company that would without hesitation take the time to even consider doing that. Within a day, he had a team come out and make some adjustments and even upgrade our humidifier with a new model that not only performed better but does not leak and have all the other problems the former unit had by design. This team took their time to make everything not just fit but to work better than the old equipment could ever have done. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop only because of the terrible time we'd had with the roofers and any other company that serviced or replaced anything in our house. Before they left, they made sure to ask if everything looked good, the install\cleanup\etc. I actually smiled and told the technician that it all looked amazing and like someone that cared did all the work. A very long story short, if you through need or desire to change HVAC equipment or service any of it, do not hesitate to call Bartlett Heating & Air Conditioning. They respond as quickly and with the care a family member would give you and your house and treat the smallest jobs with the same detail as the large ones.

Our furnace had been cycling on, then off all morning and the temps were going to be in the 30's that night. He suggested a time window and told me up front there was NO premium charge for the service on Sunday. He arrived as planned and was able to quickly diagnose an issue with the heat exchanger temperature limit sensor. He had a replacement part in the truck and had us up and running in no time. He even added an inline fuse to the transformer input (normally on newer models- missing on ours) to make sure there was no issue with the sensor he installed. My wife and I both appreciated the warm house that night. Scott did wear a face mask when he arrived- much appreciated in this time of Covid. He shared what he was doing as he did it. I explained that we had the original furnace in a 20+ year home, so he made sure I understood that a new furnace might be in our future and described some of the advantages of a new system. He also sent me a quote- which I have to review. The cost of the repair was reasonable and he applied a $35 new customer discount that I had seen on his web site. I sent a message via Yelp on a Sunday night and they immediately scheduled our oven troubleshooting for Monday afternoon. Their front office staff is incredibly responsive! George (technician) arrived timely and was very thorough. He explained things to me every step of the way. He is approaching this very methodically - ok, so it's not the igniter, let's look at the next link in the chain... I saw George called out by name in other Yelp reviews, and I understand why he comes so highly recommended! He called the manufacturer to discuss his findings, but the manufacturer tech team wasn't available. He let me know he would be calling them again in the morning and that he would reach out to me with an update. I've had plenty of negative or so-so experiences with other service technicians from other companies. This experience with George / Astera is so positive that I'm posting my review even before the service is completed. Astera will be getting first crack at all of my appliance and HVAC service calls going forward.

Brakes grinding, nearly kissed the side of my car. He then proceeded to yell profanities and call me numerous names when I pulled up next to him to ask him to pull off and allow me to verify if he had in fact made contact with my vehicle or damaged it in any way (I had no way of knowing if he had hit me due to the impact on the curb). Called their number and the dispatcher didn't even verify which vehicle I was calling about when I asked her to call her driver to explain I simply wanted him to stop so we could ensure a police report was not needed. She simply stated "we'll try and get ahold of him". He finally pulled over as I drove with him a good five minutes and proceeded to threaten me with a phone call to the police (claimed he had called them already), called me further names and would not allow me to explain or talk to him in a decent manner. I even attempted to introduce myself when I saw his name tag and state "Can you let me speak, you made this mistake not me, and you refused to pull off to ensure my vehicle wasn't damaged by said mistake." Did I get that far? No. He continued to scream and film me on his phone. I finally said fine we can wait for the cops then, called South Elgin PD, they had no call from this man or this incident. He lied hoping I would simply drive off and leave it be. He followed me around my vehicle when we were outside of the cars for that brief moment attempting to film me and my car. I would NEVER call this place simply due to this individual they employ. Learn how to drive and be respectful of the fact that when you almost drive someone off of a road, the decent thing to do is ensure everything is alright and then go on our merry ways. Absolutely disgusting interaction and nearly gave me a heart attack. Didn't stop shaking from this until I finally got to work, which this made me late to.

That said, my last experience with them was so disappointing that I won't be using them again in the future. I called after hours when my furnace stopped working and was giving off a strong smell. They use an answering service. The answering service passes along emergency calls to Bloomingdale Heating & Air Conditioning and promises a call back in 5-10 minutes. I called 4 times over the course of 5 hours. Never got a call back. The next morning I get a call, I mention the issue I had the night before. The response was - "it was a busy night". Technician comes out. Quotes me $620 for a $100 part and 40 minute install (his estimate, not mine). I question the price. He says he'll call his manager to see if they can do better. An hour later, I get a call from the office with someone requesting payment. I say that the quote is still being reviewed. The person on the phone says she is the office manager and the price is what it is. I ask how a 40 minute job adds up $520 in labor. She says that her price includes parts, labor, and the service call. I acknowledge the cost of the part is roughly $100 and again question the other $520. She mentions a $90 service fee. I question why that isn't rolled into labor. Historically, they waive service fee if work is done. After going in circles, the office manager asks "for a minute", thinks she puts me on hold but doesn't, yells inaudibly for about 10 seconds, then comes back on the line to collect payment. From start to finish, the whole experience was embarrassingly unprofessional. Feel free to charge what you can when running your business, but do it in an appropriate way.
