Do not use American Van Lines. The process of setting up the move on the phone was straightforward. Issues started to arise with all the other aspects of the move. The scheduling of the packing and pick up was spotty but we received a date and prepared for the event. The driver complained of his truck breaking down causing him to be late. The driver was polite but the packers were of varying skill levels. The driver was in a rush to leave as he had a lot of driving to do or other jobs. At no time did anyone show up from the company to check on the move, quality of the driver or crews. The packers used wardrobes as large packing boxes and threw items from the room in the box until it was full rather than use the hanging bar to hang clothes up. It appeared they wanted to jam as much as they could into the truck using the lowest number of boxes. This led to a significant amount of broken pictures, lamps, lamp shades, and lost items such as a gasoline leaf blower, etc. The boxes were not marked as to the location in the house where they were packed, and the inventory had no usable details. We were not kept informed as to the location of our items and multiple phone calls to American were not returned, although there was attention paid to getting our money paid to the company. The only way we were able to get any response from operations about our shipment was by asking the finance people to run down the representatives and forward us over. Even then we were put on hold and no one answered. The pattern of lack of communication continued for the delivery. This driver complained of his truck breaking down as well. He did not seem to know the crew who came in, late, to unpack. Since the boxes were not marked and the inventory was sketchy we had to try to open each box and decide where it would go. Again no one came from the company for quality control. The driver said they would not check the inventory list against the boxes coming in so we had no idea if we received all of our items. I know there are missing items such as the leaf blower. The driver was in a rush to leave and the crew ran the boxes into the house as fast as they could so they could depart. Because of the poor packing and poor handling of the furniture, there was an excessive amount of breakage and damage to lamps, pictures, dishes, etc. There was no piece of furniture undamaged. Television screens were scuffed and scratched. Clothing items were smashed into wardrobes with picture frames on the bottom of the box and broken glass everywhere from smashed frames. It was total disaster. The crew would not remove any of the packing items, even the ones they created by unwrapping furniture, etc. They started to and the driver told them to stop as it appeared he did not want to have to deal with it. There was no option to stack the materials and have them picked up later as we had been given on all our previous moves. When we tried to call the claims line, no one answered and no one returned our call. The claims process is absurd in that it asks for multiple estimates to repair, and the insurance is pennies per pound. We have moved many times with the military and federal government. We paid for this OBE out of our own pocket and picked American because it was highly rated, and the cost was what we expected to pay for quality service. This was by far the worst move we have ever had. Everyone on site was in a hurry to just get it over with and did not take the time to provide quality service. Packing materials were used sparingly as the driver seemed to want to keep his costs down. The crews on both ends seemed to be amateurs picked up off the street. My advice to others is to find another vendor other than American. We were charged high prices for poor service and will be spending thousands more to repair and replace what American damaged, destroyed, and lost. I had an excellent packing/moving experience with American Moving & Storage Solutions this past weekend with movers Adam, Steve, Adam, Nick. From the onset, it was very easy to call and communicate with Todd and the team. He performed an in-person walkthrough and gave an upfront quote on packing/moving costs, as well as the estimated length of time. I was moving out of a very difficult apartment that had only 1 elevator, no loading bay, and an extremely long hallway circuit. None of this was an issue on the day of the move. A team of 3 movers had no issues packing, loading, and unloading all of my stuff. There was no damage to any hardware/furniture, and the final cost was right in the range of the estimate. Over the past 10-years, I've moved 7 times for work and this was BY-FAR the best moving experience I have ever had. American did a fantastic job. They were able to schedule us on our desired day even though they had several other jobs the same day. They showed up exactly when they said and the move took less time than they quoted for. We saved so much money by going with them. The movers were professional and courteous. One gentleman even showed me how to repair my dryer!! The only reason they aren't getting a 5 star review is because a dresser we had got dinged and they put a very small scratch in our stair wall. This one takes credit cards, was available when we needed them, and Jeff was awesome on the phone. We scheduled 3 guys to come and pack up our kitchen on Wed., then move furniture and boxes on Thurs. The same 3 guys helped us both days: Bell, Steve, and Stephan. We appreciated how hard they worked, as well as their great personalities. We moved from my 3 story condo across Columbus into our first house--in the pouring rain. I was scared to death! My furniture is custom made (and heavy) and it took me forever to save up for it. I was worried it would get damaged. Thankfully, our movers were fantastic. They took care of my furniture, my carpet/floors and both properties. They brought blankets to cover the floors, doors, walls, you name it, as it was raining sideways. They easily moved furniture that the original delivery crews could barely pick up. I am moving from Central NY to California, I received an original quote for $7.70 per cubic ft. now that it is too late to change, the final quotes comes in at $11.10 per cubic ft. a 44 % increase from the original quote. The items I added are all small items except for the fact that they list 15 small boxes when I told them 6 Unfortunately, American Moving Solutions & Storage deceived me so far and I did not move yet. They told me that for some "privacy/security" reason John the original sales person is no longer able to be connected to the account once he has given me the quote. Jeff was wonderful on the phone with my questions answered honestly and the estimate provided was very close to what was quoted on the phone. This was my second time using American Moving & Storage to move within Columbus and I had another great experience. I would use them again in the future. When I move within a city I move all the small stuff myself, but hire movers to do shelving, dressers, couches, chairs, end tables, ottomans, and washer/dryer. Their pricing is $100 for transport + $100/hour for the first two hours and $50/each half hour after that. It's very inexpensive compared to most other moving services and they do a great job. Benefits: Movers don't waste any time - they move quickly Movers were very helpful - it was drizzling at parts of my move, and the movers would let me know which items needed to be wiped down to avoid water spots. Our washer/dryer wouldn't fit through a narrow doorway, and while one moved continued moving items, the other quickly took the door off its hinges, positioned the washer/dryer, and popped the door back on - he even left the pins up slightly so they would be easier to remove in the future if need be. Movers did a great job moving an extremely heavy and cumbersome queen sleeper sofa I have (it's a beast, but they moved it twice for me without too much trouble - and I've never lived on the ground floor, so there were always stairs involved). read more

I went to YELP to look at reviews on the different moving companies in Columbus, Ohio. I pulled up the main movers you hear about on the site. I started to get terrified at the different reviews I was reading about. How was I going to pick a company that I could trust and feel comfortable moving my belongings? I pulled up American Moving and Storage Solutions. I started reading their reviews on YELP and started to feel relieved. They had all good reviews, so I decided to call them for information. They were very informative and provided the information I needed for a stress free move. They followed-up our conversation with a email confirmation. They take your credit card information to hold the reservation. Nothing is charged to your card until the move is complete and at that time you provide them with method of payment. The owner, Jeff, contacted me the day before to confirm time and location. The next morning, they were scheduled to be at my storage unit at 8:30 am. They arrived early at 8:15 am. The 3 gentleman introduced themselves and the loading began. I was amazed. The 3 worked as a team and were amazing. They handled all my items with care and had a science to loading the truck so everything could fit. They used blankets and secured items when needed. They had the truck loaded up in no time and all three gentleman were very nice. Once my storage unit was emptied, the one gentleman even swept out the storage unit for me. I didn't even ask. The unloading went just as smoothly. They took all my items wherever I wanted them to go, which included many trips down to the basement. It was raining that day and they put down blankets to protect my flooring and carpet. These three guys again were amazing and made this move stress free. I was very pleased and so glad I went with them. Once they were done, the clock was stopped and I provided form of payment and they were on their way. I hired this company for the most part on Yelp reviews and other online resources for my latest move from one side of Cbus to another. Two weeks before moving I called and provided a general list of items to be moved and they provided a estimated quote and explanation of any other charges that might accrue with time and materials. It initially was going to be a simple place to place move but as I prepared for it I realized I couldn't do all the packing and preparation due to my health limitations so with one week to go I changed this to a Pack and Move. This was no problem and the company confirmed the amount of packing materials that would be needed and costs of those. The evening before my Move, they called to confirm their appointment with me and called before arriving the next morning. Two hard working friendly gents, Henry and David introduced themselves and went to work packing my apartment up and moving everything to their truck in about 3 hours. I had still 4 rolls of packing tape left from my previous move which they gladly used first so I didn't have to pay for tape this move. 20 minutes later we were across town and they quickly unloaded and set all my belongings in the places where I'll be unpacking them over the next week or so. At this point everything was well packed and I've found absolutely no breakage or damage to any of my goods. The sum up: Professional, Friendly and Fast. Everything they promised was delivered and then some. Was able to pay via Credit Card at the end of the move making this one of most amazing and effortless moves I have ever made in my life. Jeff Frank and Oscar were highly professional, efficient, and responded to all our questions in a timely manner. Our quote was half of what the other moving companies were charging us. My husband and I had completely forgotten that the Capital City Marathon was taking place on the same Saturday as our move. Which means several roads leading to our apartment would have been closed. Thanks to the construction, this was not the case. A week before our move, Jeff called to remind us about the marathon and asked if we could confirm what routes would be available, so they could move our appointment to the afternoon if needed. We appreciated his due diligence. Mike M. and Stephon T. were outstanding. They arrived half an hour before the scheduled time, did their walk-through, and carefully went over our contract before they started working. They were efficient, polite, and highly professional. In addition, they had a great sense of humor and engaged us in conversation all while working quickly and carefully handling our property. We had an estimate of 4 hours for our move. We moved today and had a FANTASTIC experience with American Moving and Storage. In fact, I was so happy with their work that as soon as our Internet was installed I needed to write a review. Our movers were courteous, kind and very hard workers. They were careful with our mounds and mounds of stuff, and they scratched and scuffed absolutely nothing in our new home. They were quick, but also fastidious in making sure all of our fragile items were taken great care of. I was amazed (and felt a little guilty) that they didn't want to take more breaks during what I would consider to be a pretty arduous move. We ended up tipping them each pretty well because of how great of a job they did. They made sure even to ask us where unlabeled boxes should go. This place came highly recommended, which we all know is particularly appreciated when dealing with moving companies. My move was scheduled for tomorrow, yet over the weekend I ended up getting help from friends. This morning, it was on my list to call and cancel the move for tomorrow (there is no deposit or cancellation penalty), but before I got to that part of my to-do list, I received a call from them. As the guy was telling me I'm all set for tomorrow, I thanked him for calling and said that my needs changed over the weekend and I needed to cancel, and that he was next on my list of calls. Not only did he tell me he didn't appreciate my not calling him sooner, but he said, "how would you like it if we called you in the morning and told you we changed our minds and wouldn't be moving you." This gem of a man even told me that I was "negligent" in my behavior. Seriously? As a business owner, I would never speak to a customer in such a way, even if the person were canceling a business transaction. Customer service, respect and decency should not be contingent upon a transaction. What this fool didn't know is that my entire business entails acquiring houses and moving people into them. Five people, from five separate houses, into each one of my homes. Guess how many of these people will need a moving referral. Guess how big I plan to continue growing my business. I actually WOULD HAVE felt a sense of obligation after having to cancel and this place WOULD HAVE been my first choice for me personally and my clients. If this is how my referrals will be treated, I can absolutely say I will refuse to do business with such a place. Completely unacceptable behavior. -- In response to the employee's comment: Yes, dealing with a hospice death over the weekend, and then on Monday morning trying to assist the family with many post-death questions and action items was a higher priority than calling you. I'm sorry that I prioritized someone's grief and suffering over my own personal moving needs. Your being a sassy queen on the phone simply underscored that I made the correct decision in my priorities. So I had these guys come to my place to give me a quote - based on their Yelp ratings. When I called them they couldn't set an appointment right away; they had to have their "guy" call me and set up a time. About 24 hours later they did call and I set a time - Tuesday at 10:30. OK, so I make arrangements to take time off of work on Tuesday and make it very clear that I am looking to move on the 30th. Tuesday 10:30 comes and nobody is there. They finally did arrive about 20 minutes late and did a walk-through of my house in order to write up a quote. The walk-through took about 20 minutes Tuesday afternoon I get an e-mail that says "Thank you for allowing me to come out to do a walkthrough for you today. In checking our calendar at our office, I discovered we do not have the trucks or manpower to do a move for you on the 30th or packing on the 29th. Being the end of the month, our schedule is already too full. I regret any inconvenience to you & wish you the best in your relocation." Really, you couldn't have checked the calendar BEFORE you came out, BEFORE I made arrangements to take time off of work. You couldn't have suggested alternative dates for the move? These guys are either extremely inconsiderate and/or disorganized or they figured that they didn't want my business for whatever reason. Either way it's bad. read more

I contemplated giving this company four stars, but when I really think about it, they're deserving of all five stars. The quote process was very simple and Jeff did a great job of getting everything set up and asking my husband the right questions regarding our move. A kind of 'meh' moment was that we did not receive their confirmation call the day before. Not really sure what happened... Might have been a number transposed on their end, but we have no record of their call. I called that evening, but we had been so busy the day before with packing that they were already out of the office. However, I left a message, and Oscar got right back to me on the dot the next morning around 8 a.m. to confirm that the movers were indeed coming and that they still had us scheduled. The move went by pretty quickly and smoothly. Nothing damaged & virtually no stress at all. The guys were pretty funny and friendly. Two and a half hours later... we were all moved in and the financial damage was very close to what they quoted us, so I can't complain. We had an upstairs, and a basement that these guys had to take heavy furniture and appliances up and down, so this wasn't an easy move for them, but they did it like nothing. It's seriously worth what you pay. Compared to others I saw within the area, the prices are actually really close, but you won't have to worry about some scrawny guy dropping your furniture, or people just slamming your stuff down and breaking it. The experience was overall very good. Hopefully, I will not have to move again for a very-very long time, but should I require a moving company again, then I know who to call! read more

Paul, David and Henry were awesome and made the moving experience stress-less for us. They arrived a little ahead of schedule, assessed all our rooms, and went to work immediately. Our 1800 sq. ft. packrat-lair got loaded in about two hours, and unloaded in an hour. Our new place is on the second story, and everything got moved up the stairs very smoothly. Nothing broken or missing. They even helped us put up our TV, disassemble and reassemble our bed, and advised on packing strategies. We liked them so much we decided to spend some extra time loading things we had planned on moving ourselves, to save our time rather than our money. Moreover, the entire crew was a pleasure to work with -- they were courteous and sometimes funny, and just made the whole day a lot less awkward and unpleasant than we were expecting. We also had great contact with Jeff and Oscar to arrange the move, who were very responsive, informative, and professional. They even recommended another mover for a special (extra heavy) item that could not be moved with our scheduled service. White glove treatment all around! My girlfriend and I hired American Moving and Storage to move to a new apartment 5 miles from our old one in Dublin and so glad we did! Jeff was pleasant to talk to and gave us a rate quote that beat everyone else we checked. Additionally, when we talked in more detail about what we were moving he was able to give us an expectation of how long it would take and it was right on. On a hot July afternoon, Mike and Calib showed up near the beginning of the time window they gave us and worked diligently to get everything loaded. I have a glass desk and TV Stand and they carefully packed away the glass. The only glass I dealt with was small glass shelves in a curio cabinet. I also moved small electronics that I didn't pack in boxes. We made our way over to the new apartment and again, Mike and Calib got everything unloaded and even reassembled our bed and the desk and TV stand. I work in the IT field and internet access is really important for my job so while the move was taking place AT&T was out also getting us set up. About the only snag we ran into was we forgot to tell Jeff how many closet boxes we needed when he called to confirm the move the day before and he didn't ask. In the end it wasn't a big deal, Mike suggested calling Jeff to see if he could bring us some; but with such a small drive to the new place it was easier to just put a trashbag over the clothes and loading them in clothes baskets. I'm extremely satisfied with everything about the move; and will certainly call them again when its time to move from here to our next abode. Good quality movers, however they did steal my prescription painkillers sending me into withdrawal (I moved the meds myself, left them in the bathroom, and they were noticed missing 45 minutes after the movers departure when the movers spent time near that location putting together a bed). Additionally, they showed up at the house smelling strongly like smoke and we also had a Kinect for Windows development device go missing (though not the power cords or connectors to the PC). Good movers, but they put my health seriously at risk, caused great anxiety to my wife, and, of course, left me in an extended amount of pain. Edit: Business owner has stated here that they take theft seriously and feel that people assume movers take things that go missing. This comment in of itself does not take the theft seriously. The item missing was known to be present, was out on a counter with only the movers and the owner present, and then was known to be gone. I searched in case it rolled off or moved somehow, but it did not and the only possibility is that the item was stolen. Please don't say you take things seriously in the same breath that you dismiss them; it's exceptionally unprofessional. Used this company for a move during the holidays and surprisingly they were able to accommodate me a week before Christmas! The guys showed up on time and I was billed as previously discussed with no surprises. There was no damage to any of my things which were handled with care and respect.
