The reviews for this Amato's location are rough. But, my experience here was pretty good. We had a large order of 15 sandwiches and we were able to pay over the phone. They told us 30minutes. Sandwiches were picked up with oil on the side like we asked. For the price, these sandwiches are a steal. A nice, classic Maine Italian with the right veg to meat to cheese ratio on a soft (but slightly gummy and soggy) sub. I would order from here again the next time I'm in Maine. read more

Have been a dozen or so times. Every time I go the food is good, but it takes 15 minutes or more to get a breakfast sandwich, despite being very few other customers. Today there's 3-4 people people working and no other customers since I ordered. Going on 20 minutes...because they're all making a mountain of fing fruit cups. Food isn't that good. The 5 star rating is for several take-out experiences over the past couple of months. The online ordering process is so easy, and makes it very easy to customize your pizza, calzone or sandwich order (things we typically order). The only thing that is difficult to order through the app, is the exact soda you might want. The quality of everything we have ordered here has always been great. Consistency is key for us and that's what Amato's in Windham has always been. The staff members we have interacted with are always welcoming and are efficient in processing our transactions. The parking lot is private, which is great. There is always plenty of parking. We recommend this location for take out if you are in the area and I definitely recommend ordering online ahead of time to reduce the amount of wait time and will improve the accuracy of your order. I called in an order, saying it will take 30 min, when I got there, there was no one in the store but me, asked about my sandwich ( BLT ) said 15 min more, we have catering ahead of you, so you will have to wait, HUH ..., can't take two min to make a blt when no one was waiting or even in the store, and there was employes walking around with nothing to do, SO IF YOUR IN A HURRY CALL WAY AHEAD OF TIME I GUESS CATERING COMES FIRST AT THIS STORE, not the customer at the COUNTER IN FRONT OF THEM .... This is the worst Amatos. We ordered food at 10.30 am they told us 30 minutes, I showed up in 30 minutes and our hot food was ready but the cold sandwich was not. Ordered a meatball sub and a chicken salad wrap. Tried to get some tap water but was told I had to buy it only to discover a sink with cups by the dine in area. Wrap came quickly and was fine. Meatball sub was maybe forgotten about and took forever. What an awful experience AGAIN! Walked in. Was the only person in line. No waiting. No rush. Whoever is running the shop there today 3/5/25 for the lunch shift needs help with customer service and directing his crew to actually provide what customers order. The initial interaction was good but as someone who doesn't live close by I got my food to go. I'm 20min. away. Only to come home to find out a "LG MEATBALL SUB" was delivered as a "LG SAUSAGE SOMETHING". I called and immediately demanded a credit because I'm not driving 40 extra minutes to accommodate their mistake. He then proceeded to lecture me that they had a bunch of callouts and shared his staffing numbers. I DON'T CARE! I gave my order to your face and you messed up. He accused me of being unreasonable because of his staffing. WTH is going on?!?? I'm ALLEGEDLY on a "CREDIT LIST" by name. So they mess up so much they actually have to keep a "LIST". It's unfortunate that such good food is distributed by folks like this. The food is fine for the area, and our waitress was super helpful with figuring out food for my kids. The decor is old, almost quaint. This is a neighborhood spot, the soups are decent, but don't go here if you are putting it up against the gourmet dining in Portland. Come on Amato's. Get it together. I'm not gonna justify my dying love for Amato's or deny that I hate the Windham location more than almost any food establishment worldwide. I've filed many complaints in person, over the phone and online in the last 10 years. No response. No change. In fact, this location is a shining example of why eating where you live is a terrible, uncomfortable idea. Stopped eating Amato's a few months back when every sandwich tasted so salty it burned my mouth, made me gag, my eyes water and my boyfriend could still taste the salt from a chruch kiss unless I clorox'd my mouth for hours. Then realized if I didn't get pickles or olives it wasn't AS bad. Tried that for a few weeks... Then we both, who always order one ham & one veggie Italian religiously, started getting ill every time we ate it. Literally munchousen'd ourselves trying to disprove it. Couldn't be, right? Nope. Over months, 4-5 times in a row seriously sick almost having to cancel plans and call out of work. Some of the worst stomach pain and bowel issues. Would last for 3 days. Enter today. After much back & forth - we decide to get some Italians. Summertime feels! Agree to skip the Westbrook Amato's that's on our way home to avoid the 5pm block party loud rap concert that happens there. Nothing more awkward than contents of uncensored dirty rap music blaring while you try to order and have small children staring at you. If you live in this area.... route 302 at 5pm the weekend of Memorial Day... yeah we chose THAT option. To go beyond our home and go to North Windham. We order our one ham and one veggie via phone. I decided to skip pickles but keep olives this time.(please see photo) We're told 20 minutes. We gave it 25. Risking a soggy inedible sandwich over waiting another hour. Pull up next to a jerk human who parked in handicap illegally and left her yorkie in her car windows up, engine off - 70 degrees out. One car in the parking lot. My boyfriend goes in. 25 minutes after ordering. Pays. Waits. Some time later a kid asks if he was who he is. He confirms. Guy states "Yeah so we had a question on your order BECAUSE YOU ORDERED A VEGGIE ITALIAN BUT ASKED FOR NO VEGGIES". It took 35 minutes to question this? Naturally my boyfriend is confused because... COME ON. He questions it and the kid shows him the slip. It indeed says veggie Italian "-veggies". He, now understanding that my sandwich isn't made, repeats my order also realizing his Italian has probably been sitting for over 30 minutes in a plastic wrap of water and oil. What on Earth! It takes a good 10ish minutes to wrap this up. He has to ask for my side of oil for the 1000th time. Oil on the side... say it with me while you put it in the freaking bag for once!!!!! Get home. Open my sandwich. Took a quick, hasty bite and gagged. The olives were so salty. It's disgusting. Why?! Rinse them... OR... maybe put 30 less on the sandwich. The whole reason I wrote this novel is because of the disgusting wasteful olive practice. In the picture you can see(minus ten that I pulled out from under the tomatoes on my other half AFTER taking off just as many from the top) how many olives I'm throwing away. Do you not invest in typical restaurant waste management? Are you that financially stable? Cool. Put it into training. 45 minutes for two terrible sandwiches. Please also note the unnecessary amount of cheese and half inch thick tomatoes. You can see in the picture of the cheese the wrapper full of olives in the background. I've been eating at Amato's since I was in the womb. It's highly unlikely you will ever have my business again nor will I recommend you to anyone. Ever again. You might even find me outside this summer giving people money to go somewhere else. Amato's sandwich shop is the best in the World! --OMG! 1st and can not believe that I am the 1st review! I am soooo excited!! 2nd I can not believe that Amato's does not have 50 million reviews! With 50 million stars. This place is as good as it gets! We live in California and when my husband and I visit Windham Maine in the summer we always have to stop at Amato's! Last year we drove cross country and when we walked into the shop..we told everyone we drove from California to be here and they gave us free sandwiches! We are so grateful that Amato's in only in the East Coast so that we always look forward to it. The "Amato's Original" Real Italian Sandwich is perfection! They bake their bread fresh daily. A warm delicious bun hot from the oven is layered with fresh sliced thin ham, American cheese, hand-sliced tomatoes, hand-sliced pickles, Kalamata Olives, hand-sliced green bell peppers, sprinkled with salt & pepper and drizzled with olive oil. When I say hand-sliced, I mean they cut the veggies right in front of you, in such a way that it is like an art-form. They wrap the sub in paper so the veggie juices can saturate. You grab a bag of Cape Cod Potatoe Chips and a cold drink to aid in this pure indulgence! You can actually order their signature sandwich online and have it sent to your home, but to us it is not the same. Eating it in their deli or taking it back to Camp and eating it on the wharf is so magical and hard to explain. We appreciate each and every bite as we savor this slice of heaven! read more

While waiting for my order I needed to adjust my face mask. The second I did 3 employees yelled very loudly at me to put my mask on (I never took it off) I looked over at the couple standing at the register and the man had his bandanna over his eyes and nose not his mouth! I'd like to know why they felt the need to yell at me for simply fixing my mask but not at the customer who wasn't covering his mouth at all. also the girl making sandwiches didn't have the mask over her nose. I finally get my order. Chicken in the calzone is cold, the chicken salad Italian is swimming in mayo and the Italian I ordered for my 4 year old who's allergic to green peppers (I told the woman on the phone this) had green peppers in it. I've lived in Windham for 3 years and haven't tried Amatos until today because of the bad reviews. I don't know what everyone is complaining about, our food was delicious. The staff was friendly. We got the Mac and cheese, the chicken and spinach pizza, little meat stuffers, and a meatball Parm sandwich. I will definitely be going back. read more

Visited this location at 8pm on a weeknight. The floor had been mopped, was very wet without a 'watch your step' type of sign. It was quite slippery. It appeared they were preparing to close. The employee suggested I get an Italian by saying he makes the best. They were made quickly. The Italians had way too many olives, the tomato slices were very thick and had to be picked off. My boyfriend's had a green pepper stem with seeds. I picked some olives off and thought the sandwich was good but could have been better. How carelessly the sandwiches were made is evidence the employee was, in fact, not great at making sandwiches. read more

Having eaten at many different Amatos locations, I always come back to the North Windham one. While the wait time is usually busier than others the staff makes up for that by providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The manager of this location, Amanda, does such a good job providing great customer service as well as food service. There hasn't been a time where I don't go inside only to be welcomed by Amanda's kind greeting as she takes my order and I wait for it to be made. Overall great people and great food! Note: this review is very specific to the Amato's in Windham. When I go to Amato's in Gorham, I always have great luck, but when I go here, it is so-so at best. Where to start... 1. Inefficient at taking order and making the food. A simple sandwich seems to take 20-30 minutes...I know it can be busy, but this is too long. Also, there is an ordering station and a pick-up station, but they break their own system, which slows down efficiency. 2. The BLT I ordered today was very questionable.The bread was totally falling apart... I could barely pick up the sandwich to eat it...even after I cut it in half myself to make it more manageable. The amount of lettuce on top was ridiculous...I probably had 2 cups of lettuce fall onto my plate while eating it and still had lettuce left (not to mention how much of the lettuce was brownish). Due to the amount of lettuce, the tomatoes were barely staying on the sandwich...just laying on top of this mound. Really, the tomatoes should be tucked neatly down in the bread to make things easier to it. The bacon was cooked about right...not as crispy as I like, but if that was the worst of it, I'd have no problem. read more

The menu is expansive enough to have something for everyone; pastas, pizzas and hot sandwiches are all delish here and very fast. So.....I have an Amato's right near me in Portland. It's been here for years. You know what you get....their Italian is....well....a simple ham, cheese, veggies, and oil sandwich. It's on good bread...it's reasonably priced, and if you grew up on these sandwiches....I get it. Equally, some of their other sandwiches fill the fast food deli style crowd...it's what it is....and it fits the bill when you want it. My first visit to the Windham location was kind of a cluster.....the workflow and ordering process was just dysfunctional.....not a huge crowd...less than ten people....but I watched for the twenty minutes after I ordered....most of the preparers were slicing and making mass qualities of regular Italians.....seems everyone that ordered, weren't ordering that. The time required to get a small chicken salad sub.....which should be three or four mins max....was twenty minutes.....and there wasn't more than six or so people in the place. Just not a good functional process to assure prompt, good, fast food service. So with that.....2 1/2 to 3 stars.....gotta serve food faster than that. read more

When I'm visiting in Maine each summer, I like to get the "Real Italian" subs that are popular in that region. I thought I'd try Amato's, since it was right in the center of North Windham and convenient to the camp where we were staying. First off, the order taking process was confused; the counter server repeated our order after each item, and we had to correct her several times, then when we reviewed the receipt we saw one item was incorrect and asked to have it corrected, which resulted in the server arguing with us, and then the manager. Why not just fix the order? We were polite and not trying to get anyone in trouble, we just wanted the correct order. We were getting "take out", but when we picked up our order, after a much longer wait than I would have expected, our order was missing items, and we had to bring out our (corrected) receipt to get the order straightened out. We were a large group, and we all got different items, but the general view of the food was "meh." My "Real Italian" had very little meat. My wife's Vegetarian Sub was heavily salted, to the point it was inedible. My son reports his Chicken Parm sandwich was tough and overdone. My daughter says her pizza was OK - better than most we've had in Maine, but Maine pizza is generally not great - and she really liked her Cheese Pazzo. Overall, not a great experience. read more

I have been going to Amato's for decades, in fact I worked at one while I was in high school. I have to say that it's sad to see what has happened to the customer service. I order An Italian with extra pickles prior to this year I would get extra pickles, the pickles make the Italian and with out them the sandwich is nothing special. So they have started charging 80 cents for extra pickles even when you want no tomatoes sub pickles they still charge you. Now my frustration is not because they charge for the pickles but rather when I request the extra pickles I truly get less than when I would order it with the normal amount of vegetables. Why charge for pickles I the first place it's not cheese or meat!! Please I hope someone reads this and fixes this issue or at the very least if I am charged for extra pickles give me what I paid for! read more

Stopped in on way home for 2 sandwiches. Both were special orders. (2 italians, one without pickles and one with out onions). Got home a found they both were missing pickles and both had onions.
