We were visiting Calgary and was looking for sweet after dinner, found this place close by our hotel. It turned out to be great. This place has been there for years. It has a lot of varieties of gelato and super surprise that they even have durian gelato which I don't eat but my sister does and she said that's even better than Asian style durian ice cream ( we don't have gelato for Asian ) The place is quite pack. Glad we found it. Staffs are not too friendly though. read more

I really like the atmosphere of the place it is very clean, and the gelato is very good, but the wooden spoons have stronger flavours than some of the flavours of gelato. The bad is you're not allowed to look at the flavours before you pay. And once you pay, they are rushing you to get you served and do not give you time to see all the flavors. On the plus side they will give you samples. read more

Amato Gelato Cafe - Gelato - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Calgary, Alberta

Our favourite gelato place in Calgary. Delicious, fast service, so many dairy free options.

Stopped in several times to sample their feature drink for YYC Chocolate Fest, a tiramisu-inspired creation that was prepared and presented with notable consistency every time. Table service was always warm, pleasant, and welcoming. The café interior is so cozy. That's why I keep coming back! read more

Very true to italian flavors. A wide selection of gelato flavors, was very enjoyable That being said it is on the expensive end and is easily $6 for the smallest gelato size. A bit overpriced and enjoyed it but maybe not worth it money wise read more

I recently made the mistake of giving this place another chance since the service has been rude and atrocious. I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt since many years ago the gelato was amazing and the customer service was above par. But I believe it has changed ownership in the last 20 years and the customer service has plummeted and so has the quality of ice cream. Disgusting service and cheap over priced ice cream. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place. read more

The Gelato is amazing!! It is a little pricey but it 100% worth it!!! During the summer, you can sit outside, and it's so cute inside the shop!!! read more

Gluten-free review: They offer cups and you can get either and single or double scoop. They pile one flavour on top of another for a double scoop instead of side by side. They also have a LOT of gluten-free gelato options. Most don't have cookies, brownies or other wheat - based additives. I got the hazelnut and green tea flavours, both of which were delicious. Cross contamination may happen with the scoops they use since it looked like they soak them in water between uses rather than having different scoops for each flavour. I didn't have any reactions, but I have a moderate gluten intolerance and not Celiac's disease so I'm not as sensitive as others. Tl;dr lots of flavour options, possible cross contamination with scoops read more

Buongiorno! Amato Gelato Café is located on Kensington Road in the NW. They share a parking lot with other small shops so parking can be limited and it can get full on hot summer days. Amato Gelato specializes in authentic Italian Gelato & Sorbetto. When you walk into the café, you are greeted with a large display case that features 72 different flavors. The flavors are rotated daily to provide as much variety as possible. I stumbled upon this place with my oldest brother. He was visiting and we were out running errands when we started to get hungry. We were on Kensington Road and saw this place so we decided to see what they offered. When I walked in, I was in awe. I couldn't believe how large the display of gelatos and sorbets were. It was just...awesome!!!! We took our time to look at all the flavors offered. They offer SO MUCH....fruity, coffee, chocolates, green tea, lavender, black sesame and classics like vanilla, cookies and crème and mint chocolate chip just to name a few. How it works is, you order and pay at the cash register and get a receipt. You then give it to the people who will take your receipt and then your order. When they know you've paid ...you can sample as many gelatos and sorbets until you find the right ones that satisfy your taste buds. We got the two scoops in a cup. I tried different flavors but always go one scoop peanut butter chocolate and the other is usually something new....pistachio, caramel...white chocolate raspberry, depends on my mood! They use to offer a plastic cups as the cup but now they've moved on to paper cups but that doesn't interfere with how delicious the gelato is!!!! Amato Gelato also offers grilled paninis, coffee, pastries and customs cakes. They've got a freezer display of Italian goodies as well. When I hit up Amato Gelato...it feels like I'm back in Italy with only the best gelato in the world. :) Give them a try..they've got great hours! read more

Serving Mario's Gelato in Calgary, this place has a huge variety of gelato and sorbettos to choose from. The service was okay - not overly friendly in my opinion. I tried the green tea and cafe latte - both were good. Surprisingly the serving size was too much - two different flavors got us pretty much two scoops each of flavor equally 4 scoops in total... ugh! My husband and I couldn't finish our cones! Hahaha. They have a bunch of small tables to sit at inside, or a couple of benches outside. There's also a wall of frozen goods ready to take home - ranging from pints of gelato, to gelato cakes, to individual frozen bars and goodies. read more

I'm not a big conventional ice cream fan. I love ice cream, but usually prefer when it's blended with something. For example, I live and breath for Blizzards. But, I am not opposed to having some good ice cream when the opportunity presents itself. Amata Gelato is a great place to get some great tasting ice cream. It is a dying breed of sorts, as more and more ice cream shops go out of business. Amata Gelato is likely no exception, as I know they have been shopping it around to potential buyers. They have a great selection of different ice creams, more than you'll find at most ice cream places. The location is quite large, so they can fit a good amount of people inside and also on their small patio. They also sell their ice cream and have freezers there. Apparently, the temperature of the ice cream is important, so their freezers are alarmed to prevent people from leaving the door open while they decide. Besides ice cream, they also have panini's, coffee & espresso, and some other food options. They also keep a decent supply of Italian drinks and normal western soft drinks. I really enjoy their Americano's and would recommend it if you like that sort of thing. So while they are still in business, if you want ice cream, make a visit. Be warned however, that when it get's busy, parking becomes a nightmare! read more

It was okay. I've struggled to find any good gelato places in Calgary that aren't super out of the way. I was in Kensington grabbing brunch with a girlfriend the other day and we were both in the mood for gelato. Amato is located in a small plaza with a few parking spots about a ~5 minute drive from Sunnyside station. Walking in there were only 2 other people, and many flavour options including gluten free/sorbettos. I saw that they had mango sorbetto (my personal favourite) so I paid for a scoop (around $5.50). When the guy put the scooper in the mango sorbetto it had a pudding like texture and he said he "doesn't recommend it" - alright. I went with another sorbetto that he recommended (the exotica? - that apparently is 25% mango with pineapple, papaya and something else). It was still okay, but more tart than I'd like and was kind of orangey. Service wasn't overly friendly and nothing really impressed me unfortunately. read more

There's a wall full of gelato and sorbet flavors to choose from as well as freezers filled with take home packages. Turns out I love nutty ice cream flavors as I ordered 2 scoops - butter pecan and pistachio. Loved the butter pecan, on the fence about the pistachio. I love the airy feel of the store and the seating area was spacious; not cramped like your typical neighbourhood ice cream place. I also ordered a sandwich which was ok bit not particularly fresh. So 2 scoops and a fancy Italian monikered sandwich cost me $13+. That was a 3 star experience read more

I've never really had gelato before, glad I came here to try out a good batch!! The service was quick, and friendly. They let you sample flavours before you buy :) I got the ginger flavour along with maple walnut. My bf got panna cotta (which is totally awesome and reminds me of chai tea and candy corn and cake!) and creme brulee. They also have some tubs of gelato you can buy.. that are actually cheaper than getting two double scoops (like we did). They also have gelato-sicles, cakes, tortes... and those standard pre-made desserts you see in some restaurants. There were also a lot of tables to sit at, and the cups and spoons you use are so adorable! Definitely will come back here. I want to try concord grape and green tea next time :) read more

Place has a ton of options but they have this fear that customers might not pay. "Pay in advance and before trying" "For a faster service pay in advance" these messages are displayed all over the store in bold. "Please clear the cheque while we place your order" was the reply from the gentleman across the counter. Can't accept it in this day and age. I mean customers won't run away, so why so fearful. Product is okay but service is pathetic. Not coming back for sure, definable not worth an experiment. read more

The gelato is alright in my opinion. It didn't stand out as a wow, the flavors are good, but seems to have lots of sugar added. I tried their durian gelato, tasted very artificial. Coming from Vancouver, I thought it would be similar to Mario's Gelato in Vancouver. read more

The Bottom Line: Lots of choices, great quality, but a little out of the way. Try: Vanilla Black Currant Coffee Chocolate Pro: The flavors we tried were all pretty good, particularly the vanilla. I also tried the cheesecake and mango, which I recommend. You'll want to share the cheesecake. While the prices are a bit on the higher side, they are generous, especially if you choose cups! Con: The seating is alright, and the service is... just eh. They are just there. Definitely room for improvement. read more

This is a summertime staple for me. Its within walking distance from my fiance's house, they have a small outdoor seating area, and they serve too many gelato flavours to keep count of. They switch up a lot of the flavours, so you might get pleasantly surprised every once in a while. In the past, I've tried their pistachio, their 'kulfi' flavour (a pleasant surprise!), and many more. An odd but amazing thing I like to do is order an espresso too on the side. I like sipping on my espresso while eating my gelato. I like the hot / cold combination!! The place is always packed, and for good reason. Both their gelatos and espressos are consistently good! Now I just need summer to come back again so I can sit on their sunny patio with a gelato in my hand, and indulge in the tastiness :) read more

Went in to try it as I live down the street and was delighted by all the flavours that were offered..! Saw a particularly funny oned named "spumoni" which is one of my friends favourite sayings..! Went to take a picture of the word "spumoni" on the flavour sign and the guy behind the counter snapped, "Don't do that!" I was taken aback as his tone was quite angry, soIi asked, "Why?" To which he replied, "Because I'm the owner and I said so!" Can't tell you if the ice-cream is any good as I got my money back and left..! I will not be returning to either of the locations, nor will I ever recommend it to anyone... Clearly that owner doesn't need business or he would be nicer to his customers..! :-o read more

OMG! Such great variety of gelato and sorbet. Amazing service! They are friendly and will allow you to to try out flavours before you order. I love the take out options all ready and packed to go. OR you can even get a hand packed one instead. I am a huge fan of their COCONUT gelato which is filled with pieces of coconut. Yummmmmy! They also have affagotos - espresso served with gelato which a nice pick me up treat. I love that you can order gelato cakes by the flavour - will for sure explain this to my boyfriend for my birthday :) I haven't been here in the summer but I'm sure it is busy. But I am ecstatic that they are open during winter! I can have Gelato all year around! Note - they only take debit and cash read more

This is my favourite place to stop when I'm out for a walk on the weekend (or a weeknight). There are so many flavours I almost never have the same flavour twice, unless it's Blackberry or Wild Cherry, because those two are so delicious and they go well with the other scoop. And there always has to be a second scoop! I think it would be possible to come here an awful lot and still not have the same two flavours (although I secretly want to try). They rotate some of them and I've seen Saffron, Dijon Mustard and Cheddar Cheese. I'm not that brave though. They'll also let you sample one if you're having trouble deciding. The staff are really friendly and even when there's a crowd they serve everyone quickly. read more

Great selection of about 40 flavors or so at any given time, with different ones coming in and out of the rotation regularly. One of the hallmarks of good gelato is smoothness, i.e. lack of ice tiny granules that permeate normal ice cream. Smoothness varies at Amato depending on the flavour: dulce de leche is super smooth, the ones with alcohol such as chocolate Grand Marnier or Malaga are smooth too, as are the sugar free generally...but the fruit based ones are less smooth. All really good from a flavor perspective though. A small selection of baked goods and panini to accompany their coffee are also available, in case for some crazy reason gelato isn't enough. Besides cones and cups, the store has a variety of ice cream novelties prepackaged in the self-serve freezers near the till. If you're going as a couple though, getting a hand-packed 500mL tub with a combo of any three flavours that strike your fancy is really the best bang for your buck. Take your booty outside to the couple dozen roadside patio seats in the summer, or stay in the purely functional inside seating during the winter...if you're lucky there might be a premier league game on the TV. read more

There is nothing better than going for gelato on a nice summer evening! And we are very fortunate to now live within a couple of blocks of the amazing Amato Getato Cafe! So many flavours to choose from, we are working our way slowly down the menu. Last night we tasted raspberry white chocolate. I was soo good! They will let you sample as many flavours as you like! The staff are young and hip and fun and it's always been busy when we go there...as you would imagine on a hot summer night. One tip! You have to go and pay first, then stand in line to get your tastings and final selection. This place is definitely making our summer better! read more

Wow...is this place for real? They have an amazing selection of gelato and they're open until 11pm on Labour Day! Between three of us, we tried the Cappuccino Cookie, Double Chocolate Brownie, Salted Caramel, and Mint Chocolate Cookie varieties of gelato. Summer = ice cream and gelato and we normally frequent village ice cream and wanted to try something different. So my ice cream buddy and I headed to Amato Gelato in Kensington. Place was very easy to find and their store is quite spacious. They have a freezer section with take out cakes and desserts which I will definitely have to try another time. It wasn't too busy when we went and the staff was able to give us quick attention. We asked for some samples to help us decide and they cap everyone at 3 samples. Otherwise, the gelato was great, service was quick and selection was a bit much for only 3 samples! But we will be back to try others. Great spot for summer and they do have a couple chairs and benches outside to sit and enjoy your gelato. read more

I've never been a huge fan of gelato. It's a cheap rip-off of ice cream. I was invited to meet a friend to this location. I never knew it was there. This was pretty good for ice cream's ugly, dim-witted cousin, twice removed. Quite nice, with a ton of flavours to choose from. It was very refreshing for a hot day. I won't be by very often unless I want to move into a refrigerator box. It's way too expensive. read more

We took our son here for 'ice cream' because he can't have dairy. He was so excited to see so many different Sorbetto's (all-dairy free, fruit based) that he could choose from. The staff were quick to offer samples which we did make use of when my son chose the pomegranate sorbetto as I thought it might be a bit sour for him even though it looked really pretty (actually is was great). We ended up each ordering a cup with two scoops and loved all the flavors we tried. The two scoops was way too much for a small kid but he was just so excited! The coffee was less impressive, they had a do it yourself Keurig machine with different cartridge options. I love our machine at home, but was a little disappointed to see it at this at a place that uses "Cafe" in their name. read more

My hubby and I frequent this place a fair bit in summer time (and sometimes in winter). We were out for a bike ride and I wanted Gelato so we moseyed down. I was surprised it wasn't packed (I think the stampede is to thank). The guy at the till was definitely dressed unprofessionally with random pink hair and his shirt unbuttoned with bare chest showing. Luckily he wasn't serving the ice cream, so I ignored it. I always try a new flavor, but usually decide on my usual (limoncello). The portions seemed bigger than usual, which was a nice treat. As usual it was great! This place is a favorite community hangout -- on pleasant summer evenings there are often big crowds outside. I want to love it since it's just a few blocks from where I live, but I can't. I'm disappointed every time I have their ice cream; it's just not very flavorful or creamy. It sounds harsh, but I think you can do just as well buying stuff out of the freezer case at Safeway. To put things in context, when my wife and I have ice cream cravings, we've taken to cramming our toddler into her car seat and driving ten minutes to Village Ice Cream downtown rather than just walking over to Amato... read more

I had heard a lot about this place upon newly moving to the Kensington area, however they neglected to impress me. After a nice meal at Dairy Lane, we decided to walk off our full bellies in search for some dessert. Remembering that Amato Gelato was nearby, we wandered over and was welcomed with a display case filled with a huge variety if flavors (not gonna lie - I wanted to try every flavor that tickled my fancy and I was actually ALLOWED, can you believe it?! Everything was really good BTW) My boyfriend and I settled on the strawberry cheese cake in a waffle cone and our friends got black cherry and mango peach. It was still sunny and warm so we took advantage of it and sat on the patio furniture set outside. It was a perfect way to enjoy our yummy desserts and end a great evening. It's probably a good thing overall that this place doesn't have better ice cream since it's so close to my house. Don't get me wrong - it's not *bad*, but I've found myself underwhelmed with the lack of flavour in each scoop I've had. Plus the servings are definitely on the smaller side for the price paid.
