We were visiting Calgary and was looking for sweet after dinner, found this place close by our hotel. It turned out to be great. This place has been there for years. It has a lot of varieties of gelato and super surprise that they even have durian gelato which I don't eat but my sister does and she said that's even better than Asian style durian ice cream ( we don't have gelato for Asian ) The place is quite pack. I really like the atmosphere of the place it is very clean, and the gelato is very good, but the wooden spoons have stronger flavours than some of the flavours of gelato. The bad is you're not allowed to look at the flavours before you pay. And once you pay, they are rushing you to get you served and do not give you time to see all the flavors. Gluten-free review: They offer cups and you can get either and single or double scoop. They pile one flavour on top of another for a double scoop instead of side by side. They also have a LOT of gluten-free gelato options. Most don't have cookies, brownies or other wheat - based additives. I got the hazelnut and green tea flavours, both of which were delicious. Cross contamination may happen with the scoops they use since it looked like they soak them in water between uses rather than having different scoops for each flavour. I didn't have any reactions, but I have a moderate gluten intolerance and not Celiac's disease so I'm not as sensitive as others. It was okay. I've struggled to find any good gelato places in Calgary that aren't super out of the way. I was in Kensington grabbing brunch with a girlfriend the other day and we were both in the mood for gelato. Amato is located in a small plaza with a few parking spots about a ~5 minute drive from Sunnyside station. Walking in there were only 2 other people, and many flavour options including gluten free/sorbettos. I saw that they had mango sorbetto (my personal favourite) so I paid for a scoop (around $5.50). When the guy put the scooper in the mango sorbetto it had a pudding like texture and he said he "doesn't recommend it" - alright. I went with another sorbetto that he recommended (the exotica? - that apparently is 25% mango with pineapple, papaya and something else). It was still okay, but more tart than I'd like and was kind of orangey. Service wasn't overly friendly and nothing really impressed me unfortunately. read more

Buongiorno! Amato Gelato Café is located on Kensington Road in the NW. They share a parking lot with other small shops so parking can be limited and it can get full on hot summer days. Amato Gelato specializes in authentic Italian Gelato & Sorbetto. When you walk into the café, you are greeted with a large display case that features 72 different flavors. The flavors are rotated daily to provide as much variety as possible. I stumbled upon this place with my oldest brother. He was visiting and we were out running errands when we started to get hungry. We were on Kensington Road and saw this place so we decided to see what they offered. When I walked in, I was in awe. I couldn't believe how large the display of gelatos and sorbets were. It was just...awesome!!!! We took our time to look at all the flavors offered. They offer SO MUCH....fruity, coffee, chocolates, green tea, lavender, black sesame and classics like vanilla, cookies and crème and mint chocolate chip just to name a few. How it works is, you order and pay at the cash register and get a receipt. You then give it to the people who will take your receipt and then your order. When they know you've paid ...you can sample as many gelatos and sorbets until you find the right ones that satisfy your taste buds. We got the two scoops in a cup. I tried different flavors but always go one scoop peanut butter chocolate and the other is usually something new....pistachio, caramel...white chocolate raspberry, depends on my mood! They use to offer a plastic cups as the cup but now they've moved on to paper cups but that doesn't interfere with how delicious the gelato is!!!! Amato Gelato also offers grilled paninis, coffee, pastries and customs cakes. They've got a freezer display of Italian goodies as well. I'm not a big conventional ice cream fan. I love ice cream, but usually prefer when it's blended with something. For example, I live and breath for Blizzards. But, I am not opposed to having some good ice cream when the opportunity presents itself. Amata Gelato is a great place to get some great tasting ice cream. It is a dying breed of sorts, as more and more ice cream shops go out of business. Amata Gelato is likely no exception, as I know they have been shopping it around to potential buyers. They have a great selection of different ice creams, more than you'll find at most ice cream places. The location is quite large, so they can fit a good amount of people inside and also on their small patio. They also sell their ice cream and have freezers there. Apparently, the temperature of the ice cream is important, so their freezers are alarmed to prevent people from leaving the door open while they decide. Besides ice cream, they also have panini's, coffee & espresso, and some other food options. They also keep a decent supply of Italian drinks and normal western soft drinks. I really enjoy their Americano's and would recommend it if you like that sort of thing. So while they are still in business, if you want ice cream, make a visit. Be warned however, that when it get's busy, parking becomes a nightmare! read more

Turns out I love nutty ice cream flavors as I ordered 2 scoops - butter pecan and pistachio. Loved the butter pecan, on the fence about the pistachio. I love the airy feel of the store and the seating area was spacious; not cramped like your typical neighbourhood ice cream place. I also ordered a sandwich which was ok bit not particularly fresh. Place has a ton of options but they have this fear that customers might not pay. "Pay in advance and before trying" "For a faster service pay in advance" these messages are displayed all over the store in bold. "Please clear the cheque while we place your order" was the reply from the gentleman across the counter. Can't accept it in this day and age. I mean customers won't run away, so why so fearful. I've never really had gelato before, glad I came here to try out a good batch!! The service was quick, and friendly. They let you sample flavours before you buy :) I got the ginger flavour along with maple walnut. My bf got panna cotta (which is totally awesome and reminds me of chai tea and candy corn and cake!) and creme brulee. They also have some tubs of gelato you can buy.. that are actually cheaper than getting two double scoops (like we did). They also have gelato-sicles, cakes, tortes... and those standard pre-made desserts you see in some restaurants. This is a summertime staple for me. Its within walking distance from my fiance's house, they have a small outdoor seating area, and they serve too many gelato flavours to keep count of. They switch up a lot of the flavours, so you might get pleasantly surprised every once in a while. In the past, I've tried their pistachio, their 'kulfi' flavour (a pleasant surprise!), and many more. An odd but amazing thing I like to do is order an espresso too on the side. I like sipping on my espresso while eating my gelato. I like the hot / cold combination!! The place is always packed, and for good reason. Both their gelatos and espressos are consistently good! OMG! Such great variety of gelato and sorbet. Amazing service! They are friendly and will allow you to to try out flavours before you order. I love the take out options all ready and packed to go. OR you can even get a hand packed one instead. I am a huge fan of their COCONUT gelato which is filled with pieces of coconut. Yummmmmy! This is my favourite place to stop when I'm out for a walk on the weekend (or a weeknight). There are so many flavours I almost never have the same flavour twice, unless it's Blackberry or Wild Cherry, because those two are so delicious and they go well with the other scoop. And there always has to be a second scoop! I think it would be possible to come here an awful lot and still not have the same two flavours (although I secretly want to try). They rotate some of them and I've seen Saffron, Dijon Mustard and Cheddar Cheese. I'm not that brave though. They'll also let you sample one if you're having trouble deciding. Great selection of about 40 flavors or so at any given time, with different ones coming in and out of the rotation regularly. One of the hallmarks of good gelato is smoothness, i.e. lack of ice tiny granules that permeate normal ice cream. Smoothness varies at Amato depending on the flavour: dulce de leche is super smooth, the ones with alcohol such as chocolate Grand Marnier or Malaga are smooth too, as are the sugar free generally...but the fruit based ones are less smooth. All really good from a flavor perspective though. A small selection of baked goods and panini to accompany their coffee are also available, in case for some crazy reason gelato isn't enough. Besides cones and cups, the store has a variety of ice cream novelties prepackaged in the self-serve freezers near the till. If you're going as a couple though, getting a hand-packed 500mL tub with a combo of any three flavours that strike your fancy is really the best bang for your buck. Take your booty outside to the couple dozen roadside patio seats in the summer, or stay in the purely functional inside seating during the winter...if you're lucky there might be a premier league game on the TV. read more

Summer = ice cream and gelato and we normally frequent village ice cream and wanted to try something different. So my ice cream buddy and I headed to Amato Gelato in Kensington. Place was very easy to find and their store is quite spacious. They have a freezer section with take out cakes and desserts which I will definitely have to try another time. It wasn't too busy when we went and the staff was able to give us quick attention. We asked for some samples to help us decide and they cap everyone at 3 samples. Otherwise, the gelato was great, service was quick and selection was a bit much for only 3 samples! But we will be back to try others. So many flavours to choose from, we are working our way slowly down the menu. Last night we tasted raspberry white chocolate. I was soo good! They will let you sample as many flavours as you like! The staff are young and hip and fun and it's always been busy when we go there...as you would imagine on a hot summer night. One tip! Wow...is this place for real? They have an amazing selection of gelato and they're open until 11pm on Labour Day! Between three of us, we tried the Cappuccino Cookie, Double Chocolate Brownie, Salted Caramel, and Mint Chocolate Cookie varieties of gelato. I was really pleased with all of them as they weren't too sweet and had great depth of flavor. Now if I could only get through the other thirty-some-odd flavors they seem to have there... This was pretty good for ice cream's ugly, dim-witted cousin, twice removed. Quite nice, with a ton of flavours to choose from. It was very refreshing for a hot day. We took our son here for 'ice cream' because he can't have dairy. He was so excited to see so many different Sorbetto's (all-dairy free, fruit based) that he could choose from. The staff were quick to offer samples which we did make use of when my son chose the pomegranate sorbetto as I thought it might be a bit sour for him even though it looked really pretty (actually is was great). We ended up each ordering a cup with two scoops and loved all the flavors we tried. The two scoops was way too much for a small kid but he was just so excited! My hubby and I frequent this place a fair bit in summer time (and sometimes in winter). We were out for a bike ride and I wanted Gelato so we moseyed down. I was surprised it wasn't packed (I think the stampede is to thank). The guy at the till was definitely dressed unprofessionally with random pink hair and his shirt unbuttoned with bare chest showing. Luckily he wasn't serving the ice cream, so I ignored it.
