Day four in Edinburgh, and we hoped off the Big Bus blue route at stop seven. It was the closet stop to our 4 p.m. Johnny Walker tour. We were both cold and ready for lunch and a block away was Amarone. It looked upscale and it was. Very nice venue. Luxurious, but a little tight on the table spacing. Our two-top. was confortable. Overall good feeling and ambience. The restaurant was probably about 80% capacity and the noise levels were low. The service was average. Lunch was simple. We each ordered a glass of Chianti and Gamberi Alla Siciliana - King prawns sautéed with garlic, chilli & baby San Marzano tomatoes, and creamy tomato-seafood bisque, with Leccino olives and lemon zest with crostino. It was delectable. Thoroughly enjoyed the dish. Our success of freelancing restrauant selections on our vacation continues. read more

Really lovely spot! We popped in without a reservation for dinner and managed to get a spot for two but around 7:00 it really started to pick up. Every seat was taken but the service was quick, effective, and friendly throughout the restaurant. The pizza pazza is delightful, the spice of the 'nduja was my favorite part! The presentation of the tiramisu was also something to note. It is served in a little planter pot and disguised as a flower, super cute. read more

Lovely high energy atmosphere, friendly servers, and a delicious meal! I was pleased that I had the foresight to make reservations a day in advance because the restaurant was packed, even on a Monday night! My Cesare Salad was exactly what I hoped for, and I added the grilled shrimp which made it a very filling meal. My husband enjoyed his Pappardelle Rags very much. What a place! Beautiful decor and confortable seating. You do need a booking because it gets very crowded. Traveling in Edinburgh for 1 week this was the good way to end our trip. We started the pizza funghi and proscuitto. Wonderful thin crust. Our entrees included swordfish, pasta with shrimp and scallops and bucatini arrabiata. All wonderfully prepared and flavorful. The drinks were great too. Prosecco rosé, tequila like drink and Pinot Grigio rosé. The desserts were tiramisu, affogato and pannacotta. No reservation is needed for this restaurant. The moment you walk in, the elegant interior creates a wonderful atmosphere. The service was very good, although our server could use a bit more training on the menu options. I had the Caesar salad, which I highly recommend, and the entrecôte with a side of spinach. It was quite good, considering this is primarily a pizza place. My wife ordered a Margherita pizza. It was sizzling, fresh, and flavorful, with a crispy and excellent crust. While it's not exactly a New York-style pizza, it was still very enjoyable. The prices are fair. I recommend this place for lunch, but perhaps not for a romantic dinner. read more

This is a nice Italian restaurant in Edinburgh with a beautiful interior and wonderful service . The menu is extensive , they offer a variety of dishes , pizza , pasta , chicken , steak , fish and more . We came for an early dinner so we were able to be seated immediately, otherwise you should make a reservation as they do book up quickly. The prices are very reasonable and the service was fantastic. Everyone was friendly , professional and attentive. We ordered a nice bottle of wine and the Pollo Al Ferri which was a marinated grilled chicken, served with rosemary potato, sautéed spinach and a side order of garlic bread . The dish came with tarragon sauce but we were able to substituted a red wine sauce instead, which was amazing. The chicken was perfectly grilled and very tender . Both vegetables were delicious , the rosemary potato was mild but could have been seasoned a bit more. The spinach was really delicious it didn't have a lot of chili so it was not too spicy , which I preferred , and the addition of pine nuts and raisins made it special. The garlic bread was outrageously delicious , crisp and tasty with plenty of olive oil and garlic ! Yum ! We certainly enjoyed our meal here at this lovely restaurant and would highly recommend it ! We returned to visit Edinburgh after some two years. Upon checking into our hotel we came by for a late lunch. It is a place we like for its interior design and the informal atmosphere and the food. We had dined here during our last visit. We started by sharing a pate d'anatra followed by a pizza prosciutto e funghi - both excellent. We ended with a panna cotta, also delicious. All this was washed down with a couple of beers. Our server was attentive and efficient. The meal came to £ 53 including a 10% tip. Good value. An enjoyable lunch. We stopped at Amarone for lunch due to its close proximity to our hotel. It has a huge menu of so many Italian dishes - pizzas, pastas, etc. We started with a couple of cocktails which were delicious. My husband got a pasta dish which was on par with one of his favorite Italian restaurants at home (that's saying something!). I got a margarita pizza (which is just cheese) and a side salad. The crust on the pizza was thin and crispy (brick oven style) and the salad was a good mixed green salad with tomatoes, grilled peppers and zucchini. Plus it's in a beautiful building so it was a great start to our trip in Edinburgh. read more

Amarone is this dazzling beautiful restaurant with an outstanding bar taking up much in of its presence. I would venture a guess, it's probably the best Italian restaurant in Edinburgh, Scotland. It has a pretty modern take on classic Italian dishes. Their pizza's are beautiful and their pastas are very creative. Take our pasta Casarecce Al Ragu: It was incredibly delicious. You could taste each ingredient, which really enhanced this dish. The root vegetables and San Marzano tomatoes were really was front and center in this recipe. The rocket (arugula) salad was fresh and crisp. Just the right amount of dressing and at a perfect temperature. Their bar serves a fantastic Negroni and the wine list is excellent. So why three stars, not five stars? The service was amateur hour! The people working here were clueless. Wrong items were brought to our table. The time between salad and entrée was flawed and the noise coming out of the kitchen sounded like there was World War III going on; I mean like extreme combat. I thought I was so listening to a Mel Brooks movie. I was actually laughing. So, what do you do when food this good has these distractions? Well in my case, sort of chalk it up to Amarone having a bad day and thank them for the amusing entertainment and really great lunch! read more

I will keep this review of Amarone quite brief and to the point. I came here for lunch on a rainy day with some acquaintances. Overall, the food was mediocre, as was the service and value. I would not bother returning. For food, I consumed RIGATONI CON SALSICCIA (£11.95), a dish of pasta with a red sauce, the weest bit of cheese, a singular five-leaved sprig of parsley, and some crumbled 'spicy' Italian sausage. It was perfectly fine, just not particularly titillating in any direction. It did not bring my mouth to water, nor did it evoke a gag reflex. It was simply dough and meat, without much flavor (so much for 'spicy' sausages!), meandering down my gullet and into my stomach and intestines. Boring! I also sampled the TORTELLONI ZUCCA E SALVIA (£13.95), which was again decent, but not spectacular. The best part was the oily unction in which the tortelloni found themselves--it was quite flavourful. However, the tortelloni themselves did not present themselves as particularly interesting. But alas, this was one of the few vegetarian options available on the menu. And on that note, it is worth mentioning that the vegetarian and vegan options on Amarone's menu are severely limited, and not particularly tantalising at that. I find that disrespectful to the vegans and the vegetarians and, to be blunt, the many livestocks and fishes of the world. As for the value, I found the prices to be a bit high for what the dishes entailed. Yes, this is supposed to be a 'fancy' restaurant, but given the underwhelming quality of the tastes and flavours, there was nothing to demonstrate value to me. Yes, the ambience was nice and the washroom soap was herbaceous, but I did not really come to Amarone to urinate and wash my hands with some basil-lavender soap. The service was a bit slow, as some of my Yelp colleagues have already indicated. It was sometimes difficult to capture the attention or interest of the wait staff. Overall, Amarone was a distinctive mediocre experience. The food was fine, but merely nutrients to shove down your gullet; the value was lacking; the service was satisfactory but not more. With many nearby food options, I do not intend to return. read more

I rarely write a poor review but I do not like bad service. We made a reservation, which I recon gets you at least a mid range table but I was wrong here. We were met by a host that put us by the back door, when there were multiple tables for two but they "were for four" but actually set for two. Put us at the bar and fuck it we walked out. Didn't even make it to what appears to be a good spot, all because of a poor host. Now per my own personal rule, I will need to write 3 great reviews. Cest la vie. The food that we ate was lovely, however our meal was cut short by the fact our table was swarmed by fly's, landing in our drinks and food. We then moved table and the same thing happened again making us leave without even being able to finish a glass of wine without it being filled with fly's. The service we received was very good until I raised my complaints to the manager (small Italian lady) who could not have cared less about our complaint and argued the point, offering only to not charge us for the fly ridden glasses of wine we could not drink. If it was not for this lady we still would have left happy enough as the food was lovely, however she has really impacted our thoughts on the restaurant and really does not serve as a good role model for the lovely staff that she manages. Will not be returning or recommending, purely because of her service. I can tolerate flys on a hot day to a relative extent, but not rude management (especially when the waiters were so lovely) read more

Settled on Amarone because Italian pleases everyone and it seemed the easiest.. It had such a beautiful interior that I momentarily second guessed our choice as being too fancy.. Thankfully although it was a bit more expensive than average, lunch didn't break the bank. Decent service and tasty food made up our hour. I had the chorizo bucatini and it was delicious though a bit rich. The pizzas at the table were huge and the caesar salad was satisfactory as well. Nice, elegant, and spacious restaurant and bar. As you walk into the establishment you may feel a little as if the establishment is out of your price budget (well atleast thats how I felt). To my surpise the prices were very much reasonable. Not only was the price right but the food exceeded my expectations. My friends and I ate here on a busy Sunday but again to my surprise the wait wasn't long. Once we were seated and our drink orders were taken. We noticed that several waitresses would check-in to make sure we were ok and had been taken care of. The menu had a lot of options yo choose from, so much I had a hard time deciding what I wanted. I opted for the duck (£19.50) which was absolutely the best choice I've made in my life in a long time. For two people our bill came to £49.50...wiiinnnng!!!!! I love Italian food...and in Edinburgh there is a perception that we lack quality Italian fare. In the main i would have to agree with this however I really do think Amarone is doing their best to fight back against this. On a merry Saturday evening Kasey and I decided we were in need of food having frequented the Guildord arms for a few hours :). The first thing to say is the service is excellent, attentive and polite and always on hand when required. Having veru similar tastes gastronomically I odered for us both, we went for the bruschetta starter followed by the lobster linguini. The starter was huge, two massive piece of bruschetta with fresh tomatos, lots of garlic, rocket and balsamic. Simple and delicious. For the main ....wow!! I am a man that likes his shellfish and his dish was great. Nice al dente pasta with chunks of lobster and tomato with a rich luxurious lobster sauce. NOM!!! Needless to say I was a happy boy. Topped up with a bottle of red than the waitress seemed to constantly have in her hand (I genuinelt didnt have to lift it once) it was a great meal. read more

What a great change to the stuffed to the gills, claustrophobic pubs in Edinburgh! Clean, spacious, and modern inside. Waiters are most likely named Marco (we had Marco #3 of 4), and are transplants from Italy. A wood fired pizza turns out a perfect pizza - crispy, non-soggy crust, a bit of char, and the tomato sauce balances the mozzarella perfectly. The Margherita pizza could use more basil, though. The tiramisu was not over soaked, so the lady fingers still held up well and had great texture, and the biscotti was, well, biscotti and not what I though one would garnish with. I enjoyed it though! Lastly... The drinks are out-of-this-world. I enjoyed the Amarone Classico. Champagne, sugar, bitters, amaretto, and brandy. One was plenty! read more

This place is really big. Like hugeee with big old high ceilings that give it a really formal and swanky feel. It also happens to serve some damn good Italian food, and by which I mean like reaallyyy good food. Probably some of the best pasta I've had at a restaurant in a while! Service is quick and polite, and the menu has a lot of options. Normally I get put off by large menus, but actually, every item I spotted is quite different to every thing else, and narrowing it down was quite easy in the end. For two people we had 2 courses, a nice bottle of red and it cost around 65 quid altogether which is pretty good value. The portions were fairly generous as well and I left feeling more than satisfied. All in all, a great venue and restaurant, and especially for those on dates or celebrations! read more

Let me just start with TERRIBLE SERVICE!! My husband and I walked in with a reservation at 8:30. We were met with a host who was extremely unfriendly and took us to a table in the corner. We asked to be moved to a booth in the front and he proceeded to tell us that they were for parties of four only. However, we walked to the front and several booths were parties of two and the one available both had placesettings for two only. He proceeded to tell us we either have to sit in the corner or at the bar. He was completely unaccommodating and unapologetic for the horrible seating location. So unfortunately we decided to walk out the door. If it starts out that bad, there's no point in staying. So disappointed! We eat out all the time and are traveling at this time and we're completely blown away by his bad attitude. I hope the manager takes notice. read more

Solid food at Amarone. I was heartbroken when Massimo Edinburgh closed as I loved their food and adored their staff. You can tell when there are Italians in any kitchen. Amarone's location and ambiance are certainly a step up from Massimo. So are the prices...while not expensive, don't expect to walk out of there without your wallet feeling a little lighter. As a starter, I had the prosciutto with fig and honey. My friend had the beef carpaccio. Both were adequately done. I couldn't really taste the honey, but the sweetness of the figs perfectly balanced the slight salty tang of the prosciutto. The carpaccio was great. For dinner, she had the gorgonzola risotto. It was out of this world. I had the goat cheese ravioli. It was fine, but didn't knock my socks off. The tiramisu almost made me forget the relative blandness of the ravioli. I must point out the pasta, while missing a little something on seasoning, was cooked to absolute perfection. The pancetta peas are NOT to be missed. If I could order a gigantic bowl of those with Amarone's version of garlic bread, I'd be in demi-heaven. The crusty bread DRIPS with butter. Divine. The house Chianti was above average. Didn't try it but as the pizzas were swept past us to a neighboring table, they looked like plated art. I'll try one next time I go. *be prepared to pay with cash. Apparently their modem has a tricky connection, and doesn't always work. Luckily my friend had enough green to cover both of us, otherwise, I'd had have to sing for my supper. read more

Nice place. Nice atmosphere. Sat at the Bar and ordered a GF pizza. It was OK but well below the median of GF pizza's I've had. The regular pizzas looked great though. Service was a bit spotty. Nice staff but had to flag their attention anytime I wanted something - like a glass of wine or the check. Just seemed like they were too distracted to keep up with the guests. But there sure are a lot of them - wait staff that is. So, not entirely sure what the issue may have been. Overall, it was a perfectly fine experience but could have been a much better one with a few tweaks. If I come back, I'll skip the GF pizza and try the pasta. read more

All I am saying is that this place plays with your mind, man. You go down a set of stairs to the bathroom (take a packed lunch, it's an epic trip), and when you pop back out at the top again, you leave through a different door. I didn't even see the door that I came through. I didn't drink anything down there when I was in the lair of the beast, nor did I pick up any cakes labelled 'eat me'. After two shandies, I was a bit concerned about how drunk I was that I didn't recognise where I was, and had to do a shameful sneak around, staying close to the wall, til I figured out my bearings. Very sneaky Amarone, I need me some arrows showing me the way home. I haven't eaten at Amarone yet - but there is a small bar area at the front with table service. For the likes of me who hates going to the bar (yeah, I am one of 'those' girls), it's awesome, but when it's busy, it's a little difficult to get the attention I so readily deserve. However, it was all very pleasant, despite how busy it was (being a Friday night), and despite it felt a bit strange to be drinking in a restaurant. I'll try the food another day. read more

Came here on a whim after a day sightseeing in Edinburgh & it was a pretty good choice. The pre-theatre menu. (£14.95 for 2 courses, £17.95 for 3) had a really good choice of dishes and the A La Carte looked extensive (although I didn't study it as I was happy with the pre theatre). We decided to go for the rosemary & sea salt focaccia to share from the main menu as a starter & this is the only reason they got 4 stars from me, instead of 5 - although the bread was beautiful & fresh there was hardly any rosemary at all & neither of us could taste it. The mains were fresh and tasty (penne with sun dried & cherry tomatoes, olives & mozzarella for me & Italian sausage pizza) and we both thoroughly enjoyed them. Desserts were also lovely, again tasting really fresh (mascarpone ginger & honey cheesecake for me - I couldn't finish it as I was too full! And raspberry panna cotta). The fact that they do cocktails was a bonus & they were fairly reasonably priced for a restaurant - £6.95 for my raspberry bellini, which was definitely made with fresh raspberries. Looking over this review I've used the word fresh a lot & I think that was the stand out reason that is come back here! read more

My saving grace after my walk out of another restaurant. After explaining the situation to the manager upon arrival, they reassured my mum and I we would be taken good care of. Service was extremely friendly, speedy and efficient as usual and the pasta lovely. The spicy sausage penne pasta was the clear winner for me. I do think its a tad overpriced however who am I to squabble over a pound or 2 when the service is so top notch. Exactly what I expect from a restaurant situated in George street though surrounded by competition. It's not somewhere I ever plan to go to or book in advance but on occasion when I want tasty Italian food near that end of town it does the job nicely. It's generally busy with a bustling, George street type atmosphere. It doesn't epitomise the quality of restaurant Edinburgh has to offer but it's worth an impromptu, post shopping pop in. read more
