We decided on this place after a friend who lives nearby in PA recommended it as his #1 restaurant in Philadelphia. I booked a 5:30 reservation for a Saturday night on the Thursday prior; 5:30 or 9:30 were the only times left, but it worked out because we had tickets to the Eastern State Penetentary at 7:30. We arrived on time and were seated immediately; the restaurant was a little less than half filled at the time.
The ambiance of the place is very cool; the kitchen is open and there's a cute little half-bar where you can sit facing the kitchen, and most of the tables in the main dining area also provide a nice view. The women's bathroom is also nicely kept and up-to-date.
We were greeted immediately and asked what type of water we preferred, to which we chose sparkling. I was a little taken back by the price though - $7.50! The server was knowledgeable and attentive. He gave us a good rundown of the menu and good recommendations. We contemplated the Chef's Tasting but ultimately decided to order a la carte. The waiter recommended 3 dishes per person, which actually ended up being a bit much. I later heard the waiter tell the table next to us that 2-3 plates per person were recommended. I think we would have been good with 5, but oh well - everything was delicious!
CROQUETAS DE JAMÓN - amazing. Ham Croquettes are one of our favorites, but we've never had them accompanied by the kind of sauce/puree that they sat on top of before. It was a coarsely-ground sauce; not smooth, which gave it a nice texture. Very tasty!
COSTILLAS DE TERNERA - this is their Beef Short Ribs, Horseradish, Parmesan & Bacon flatbread. This was very, very good. The chef could have done a bit of a better job spreading out the toppings across the flatbread though; everything was centrally located on like 1/3rd of the flatbread in the middle. However, it was delicious.
PIMIENTOS DE PADRÓN - Flash Fried Peppers, Salbitxada, Sea Salt. These were OK; they weren't all that tasty or hot (spicy hot; not temperature-wise). They could have used a little extra something, They were also served on top of the same puree as the croquettes.
WAGYU BEEF BROCHETTES with Bordelaise sauce. These were good; perfectly cooked and served on a skewer with a potato cube in between two pieces of wagyu. Warning: these tasted very much like wagyu, so if you're not familiar with this kind of meat and are expecting just a good tenderloin-type steak, think again. They do have a bit of that gamey taste to them.
PERNIL ASADO - Roasted Pork, White Beans, Arugula, Orange. This was our favorite. The pork skin was I believe fried and was so amazingly crisp and tasty. This was the second-to-last dish we were served, and we were getting pretty full but easily finished this dish because it was so good. This would be our #1 recommendation over everything else we had, with the flatbread being second.
ALCACHOFAS A LA PARMESANA - Parmesan Artichokes. These were pretty good, but were a bit heavy. They were served in a cream sauce, and I think because they came last and I was pretty full, it wasn't as appealing to me. However, they were very tasty and I'd order them again.
Even though we were full, after looking at the dessert menu (which the waiter swiftly placed in front of us immediately after we said we didn't need anything else :)), we had to try at least one dessert item. We chose the MILHOJAS - Puff Pastry, Hazelnut Praline, Bergamot & Banana. It was just delectable. We love having desserts when we go out that are unique from everything you usually see, and this was. The flavors and textures of this dish went so well together - we were so pleased with our choice! However, we'll definitely have to go back to try the others because they all sounded amazing. My husband got a coffee too, which was good, just served in a very small cup.
Overall, we were very pleased with our experience here and will definitely be back. We could easily identify another 6 plates that we'd want to try! read more
