Discovered Always Spring a few years ago searching for Korean places on Yelp and I'm so glad I did bc there is no way I would have discovered this restaurant hidden upstairs inside of a grocery store, G Mart. I'm not too experienced with Korean food and often just stick to what I know at every Korean place I visit rather than branch out. That being said I've had the dolsot bimimbop, kimchi jjigae/stew, kimchi pajeon/pancake, seafood pancake, and various bulgogi and galbi and thought all of them were solid. Banchan was decent. None of them were bad on multiple visits but none of them were so amazing that it left an imprint either. This place is probably my favorite spot when I want a Korean meal and not just wings or kbbq. read more

Recommendation from a friend. Upstairs of the grocery store. Great to grab a bite before grocery shopping. I got the galbi tang. It took a while to come out. There were a few tables filled but not too busy. My banchan didnt come out until my food came out. There was about 7 side dishes. They were the highlight of my meal. They were simple but delicious. Sadly the soup wasn't good. I was sad that it didnt have much flavor. It's like they forgot salt and just boiled hot water. There was only 3 piece of beef rib. There was plenty of daikon and glass noodles. The prices for the dishes were a bur pricey for the portions they give. I'd come back again to try their other dishes. We stopped by here for lunch on our way to Seattle from LA. I found this place on Yelp and we went on a Friday lunch time. It's located on the 2nd floor inside a Korean supermarket. It was packed and busy but we only waited about 10 min to be seated. We got stone pot bibimbap, cold noodle and gal-bi combo. Bibimbap and gal-bi tasted good but cold noodle tasted like any other store bought cold noodle that you can make at home. It's not that spacious so it wouldn't be good for a big party. read more

my favorite korean spot in town! I always come every summer for the spicy cold noodles which are phenomenal. it's tangy and spicy and the noodles are perfectly chewy. the sauce is addicting and i've tried other cold noodle spots in town but no one makes it as good as always spring! the galbi was well marinated and paired perfectly with the cold noodles for the ultimate combo. read more

I've been coming to Gmart for some time now and never stopped by the restaurant til now. I must say it's a tight fit but can fit a bunch of people. The wait wasn't too long. They have pictures of the wall which make it super helpful. The staff and service were great. Great little mom and pop hole-in-the-wall restaurant that's located inside of G-Mart Asian Market. Just walk to the back, around the corner, and climb up the stairway. I ordered the #38 Galbi and it came out sizzling hot! My husband ordered the #20 Galbi Tang and that came out bubbling like a witch's cauldron. My sister-in-law ordered the #37 Bibimbap. Lastly, my brother-in-law ordered the #9 Jabchae. Everything was delicious and served with complimentary hot tea. Water is upon request. There are no fountain drinks. Just canned drinks for $3 each. Although the dishes came out separately, the service was quick. We asked for more banchan and was accommodated with no issues and no extra charge. What a fun place for a delicious meal! My son and I visited this place that's in the upstairs of a Korean grocery store. Everything was great! This spot is a family staple. There's two picture menu mounted on the wall for easy reference. The banchan (side dishes) is a good variety of seven veggies that are refilled upon request. I find the tonkatsu is sizeable and equivalent to two meals for my son. I For those liking a solid rice bowl I would recommend getting #28 namul dolsot bibimbap (in stoneware). This is the most Korean of Korean restaurants. One only finds it by accident if you just happen to be in a Korean market off the beaten path hidden between 217 and a used car lot, down a street you can only get to from one direction off TV Highway. Having said that, we've gone to this market off an on through the years, but we always forget this restaurant exists. We also shop late so many times, we've walked in at 8 just to be turned away from the restaurant. We also went once and was denied service because even though it was 30 minutes before they were closed...they ran out of rice. I understand you can't run a Korean restaurant without rice...but come on, you're above a Korean grocery store...how do you run out of rice? After watching Korean Moma's vid on this business, I bookmarked this for our trip to PDX. Perfect, after reading the great reviews this place is a Go! It is also so cool that Always Spring Restaurant is tucked away above a Korean grocery store. Once you are at Gmart, go straight up the stairs to get to Always Spring. They were pretty busy on a Saturday night, there were chairs to sit and wait after adding your name on the list. I went to browse at Gmart so it was perfect til we got our table. Andrew helped us and he was friendly, I could see he was super busy doing it all, he managed everything well! Taking orders from all the tables, wait service plus having to answer a ton of questions that I was asking. hehe. The huge picture menu on the board was helpful along with the menu. I went with one of the soups the Korean Mama had which Dak-Dori Tang $18.95 ( chicken stew soup) this comes with rice sides, also got an order of Jjin Mandoo $12.95 ( steamed mandoo. I love the presentation, love all the sides of banchan, all my favorites except for the seaweed which was way too strong, seaweedy! We asked for 2nd servings of kim chee, daikon, broccoli, fish cake which was filled upon requesting. Now the verdict of food, how good is this place?! The chicken stew reminds us both of eating beef stew but Korean style, soup version. The chicken stew was simple and plain with chicken, potatoes, onions, and carrots. I usually order tofu soup so this is a first for me to try. The chicken was tender but I forgot we had chicken for lunch, I should have ordered the other soup ( beef) instead. I normally order the fried man doo and I am so glad I tried the steam one, I loved this, it was steamed perfectly and not overcooked- very tasty! We had leftover steamed mandoo and ban chan which we enjoyed the next day with bowl seafood instant ramen, it went well together. Environment: the usual, it hasn't changed since I last went which was a few years ago haha. They have more menus that are huge with English, Korean, and pictures. Staff: very friendly, kind, checked on us and always had a smile on his face. Food: My friends ordered spicy food to share but since I can't really eat spicy foods, I ordered a dumpling soup for myself! It was around $17. The food was piping hot and there were lots of dumplings right now. It was very filling and great portions. located above a bodega-esque korean grocery store, the suburbia-concrete-jungle-landscape belies so much heart that is to discover here. i mean, hey, look who's back?! (me!) tonight just felt like a korean-hits-the-spot kinda night, and always spring didn't disappoint! our go-to has quickly become the soontofu jjigae 순두부찌개 (#16) with vegetables and namul dolsot bibimbap 나물 돌솥 비빔밥 (#28). for my fellow yelpers who are like me and are gluten-free / plant-based, these two are safe options if you note no gf (just to be safe) or beef in the bibimbap! you know how sometimes takeout feels like a whole experience rather than just serving a utilitarian I'm-hungry-guess-i-can-order-takeout role? that's exactly what tonight was: i absolutely loved the fresh vegetables throughout from the bibimbap and pickled(?) sprouts to greens to the zucchini in the jjigae which gave it some crunch and earthiness. the salt was added with purpose, and no excessive oiliness. The rice was toasty in just the right ratio with a slight tang. I did have a chance to dine here earlier and the camera at first that time (somehow). Seating is in a smaller, cozy area and when we were there families were gathering for a meal. Understandably, language can be a barrier at times, but honestly, the people where really do put so much soul and you can tell. This is by far my favorite Korean spot in the Portland metropolitan area! They are tucked inside G mart upstairs and has a really extensive menu with some items I do not see at many Korean places. I tried their jjin mandu and the dakdoritang. The jjin mandu was well steamed and came with a nice dipping sauce. The dakdoritang is a spicy stew with chicken, carrots, and potatos and I could not stop drinking their broth! Definitely coming back to try their kalbi and galbitang. read more

We arrived close to the closing time, but the staff were super cheerful and encouraging to try multiple dishes instead of trying to rush our experience, which I truly appreciated. Upon arrival we got sat pretty fast, which was nice, however we had waited for 15 minutes to place in our order. We saw others place their orders in as well as phone orders in the meantime. We also watched as other people's orders were being served even though they were sat after much longer after us. 45 minutes later, another server had came up to check on us and that is when she told us that our original server had forgotten to put in our order. Mind you, there were only 5 tables with people and they had already been eating. During those 45 minutes, our server had been walking around the dining room, which I kid you not, consisted of no more than 15 tables. Tucked away in a grocery store is this gem of a place. We wanted to eat something warm and hearty, and my husband recommended this place. Surprisingly being on Yelp so much I still hadn't heard of them before. Don't let appearances fool you because this was some seriously good Korean food. We came during lunch hours and there was quite a line already . we put our names down and since there were at least ten parties ahead of us , we assumed that it would take a while and so decided to buy some groceries downstairs and go have lunch some place else . To my surprise the 20 minutes it took for us to do the groceries ,our number moved forward and we were next in line. They seated us but it took them a while before they took our order. The staff is limited at this place so wait times are long as a result. The menu is elaborate and they also have pictures to give you a good idea of what to expect . We got the Bulgogi, The steamed dumplings and Ugeoji Galbi Tang. My favorite was the Bulgogi which had just the right amount of kick and the pork was so juicy and flavorful. The soup was alright, probably not something I would pick next time though. The sides that come with the meal are exceptionally good .Portion sizes are very generous and we had quite a bit of leftovers despite both of us overeating a lot. The staff here works super hard yet always answer with a smile when service is requested. There is a dedicated parking lot right out front but its not too big so prepare to park on the street across from the store. The gal I was my least favorite in the area due to the fatty cut but even then it was good because who could not love galbi. We wouldn't come back. The service was so lacking it was hard to overlook. No frills and straightforward Korean cooking - just like how my mom and dad like it :) We got the pajeon (seafood pancake) to share and I got the grilled mackerel. I was so excited to try this place after seeing it hyped up on TikTok but I left very disappointed. Service was awful, came here for lunch with a friend & we were not greeted & unsure of what to do when we saw all the tables were full. The ladies saw us but didn't acknowledge us or tell us what to do. We saw a small notepad with names so we just put our name down & sat in the what we assumed was the waiting area which was 2 small chairs in the corner. Then a lady shouted at us to come with her. The table was not even ready, she scooted the tables apart then I kid you not threw the menus on the table in such a rude manner & left. We brushed it off & hoped the rude service meant the food would be good. I also noticed every table had tea but we never were offered tea our whole time dining there. Also when they brought out our food, the lady put her whole hand over our utensils to move it. We ordered the cold noodles, tteokkbokki, and soontofu jigae. The cold noodles were good but not our cup of tea. The jigae was good & the only thing we ended up enjoying a lot. The tteokbokki flavor was good but the rice cakes themselves were mushy & too soft. And to top it off when they brought us the check & we asked for to go boxes, the lady looked at our food & made wide eyes & a face. It was so rude, we were so appalled. We just wanted to get the heck out of there!
