Excellent product - crappy company. How can a company that makes an excellent be crappy? By failing in every other realm. Customer Service - I was on hold for the sales team for over 3 hours over two consecutive days. On one of the days I was told I was the next person in line for an hour. For the other I left my number - they never called back. I sent them an email complaining - they never answered. I have both bumper=for a GMC Savana. I put the rear bumper in myself. The installation instructions were sparse and in some ways inaccurate. For instance, the list of parts was incomplete - it didn't mention the straps! So much for a attention to detail. The installation page stated it was for vans from 2001-2016! Nobody has bothered to update the form for 8 years...Nice...The installation instructions did not include tools needed which left me lacking a little Allen wrench - which they could have easily thrown in with the $5k package. You have to drill holes in the door hinges to order to attach the straps. In order to do that correctly you have open the door all the way to get the hinges out of the way but it doesn't say that in instructions. Not sure if I had the right idea I called technical support. I was on hold for 2 1/2 hours (again I was the next person in line for hours) and then for an hour the next day (the second person in line for the entire hour). I finally just gave up and did it and it worked. The installation sheet came in two pages one of which had a rather obscure photo on it. By the second day, the photo on my page was dust - I could hardly see it - so I went to the website to find that it did not list the second page - which involves attaching the swing arms. Apparently Aluminess never bothered to put the complete installation instructions on their website. Lastly, the bumper and storage box came in a big and really impressive box. No instructions were given how to get into the bumper - which turned out to be a chore. First we tore apart the box - and discovered it was screwed into the pallet but we couldn't get into the storage container where the screw and the parts were. Finally we figured out how to slide the little lid on the bumper out and got in there - only to discover that the screw held two nuts not one. Working the top nut didn't do anything we figured out that you had to put wrenches on both screws to release them. L Of course you can figure this out and we did but it was a sloppy job by a company that builds a good (and very expensive) product but hasn't taken the time or effort to do the little other things right. I'll give Aluminess two stars for how great their product looks and the fact that it is durable. The compliments end there. I recently purchased running boards for a 2025 Ford Transit. At $2000 they should be perfect. When I discovered that they didn't fit (they would not wrap around the bottom edge of van siding) I contacted Aluminess for installation help. BTW the instructions for installation are woefully inadequate. Alluminess responded in writing that I should "use a mallet" or "a hydraulic lift" to "force it into place". This does not sound "like it is made to fit" to me so I took the product to a professional van fabricator in Seattle. They wrestled with it for 8 hours eventually getting it to fit but destroying the exterior edge trim in the process. I was told to buy another piece of trim and that they would "cut it down to size" to cover the gap left above the running board. While I'm riding Aluminess I'll mention that the forward sensor mounts in our front bumper were not drilled appropriately. Ford discovered that by drilling new holes in the mount that the sensor could be installed as intended, Thanks Aluminess!! read more

Stay the H away from this company! Aluminess installed a front bumper on my Sprinter, and then I drove back home, a 600 mile round trip. The next day, after some morning dew, one of the proximity sensors started beeping. It continued like this for months, worsening after washing the van, and when it rained. I drove the 300 back, dropped the van off again, and told them it was clearly a water issue and asked would they please check that sensor cable they installed? Picked the van up after a day in their shop and asked, "You say it's fixed, eh? Did you water test that connection?" Answer- "Um, no- We're not authorized to spray water in there like that." 300 miles back home, pretty damned frustrated. Delved into it and shrink-wrapped the connector myself. It worked. Don't work with this company. There are better alternatives. read more

I initially contacted Aluminess in early August to get a quote on a cargo box and bike rack for my electric bike. I spoke with Ryan, explaining the set up that I was looking for. I want the bike rack lower than the box so that I don't have to lift it so high. I am 70 years old with a bad right shoulder. He expressed that I could have exactly what I wanted. I was told to go on their website and price out what I want. It came out to a little under $3,000, not including installation. Every item showed "Free Shipping". --Being that Aluminess is located in San Diego, I decided to look for a local dealer. There is one five minutes from where I am currently staying in Riverside. I sent my request to the local dealer to get a quote. He also told me to go to the website and pick out the items I want and he will send me a quote including installation. When I received it, I decided to contact Aluminess directly once more to place an order with them and set up an installation date. (The reason I didn't go with the local guy is because he added shipping even though every item I wanted said "Free Shipping" on the Aluminess site and the local guy quoted 11 hours of installation where Aluminess quoted 4). When I called Aluminess I spoke with Steph, the other salesperson. Again, I expressed the set up that I desired. Again, I was told that it was possible. I was told to go online and order what I want and put their address as the shipping address. This would tell them that they are installing my gear at their facility. I ordered the Box and Bike Rack Carrier- Promaster $1805.00 (I did receive a 10% discount for giving them my email address), 1 UP USA Roof Rack Bike Tray $320.00, Deluxe Box Classic $850.00, installation $437.50. I placed the order on the Aluminess website on 8/7/25. I was notified on 8/14/25 of my installation appointment of 8/27/25 at 7:30 a.m. --When I arrived for my appointment (102 miles door to door) on the 27th I was met by Tyler. When I shared the set up I wanted he said it wasn't possible. He suggested buying a box that opens sideways (note: this box has less cargo space than the one I ordered) because the bike rack would block the door of the Classic cargo box. I agreed to the new set up. I also stated that I wanted to order another box and bike rack for the driver's side as I wanted the extra cargo space. This cost an additional $3000, plus installation. I would have to come back as the components had to be fabricated. --When my vehicle was brought out with the slimmer box and bike rack, Tyler explained that the new boxes wouldn't work on the driver's side because the bike rack would block the door from opening without having to open my passenger door. That was unacceptable for my use. So, I decided to have them take off the bike rack and slim box and install a front opening cargo box. My e-bike is a folding model and is lighter than most at 48 lbs. I could load into my RV, and use the extra cargo space. I was given an installation date of 8/29 two days later. I agreed to this and drove my RV home with the slim box and bike rack installed. --I drove back down for the removal and installation of the new set up. I took delivery of my RV with the two cargo boxes and drove the 102 miles back home. Over the weekend of 9/15 I showed my new RV to a friend. I opened the back doors, with the cargo boxes installed. I closed the doors and started my RV to drive home. My dash gave me a "back door open" warning. I went back, opened and closed it again. The warning showed once more. I closed the solidly this time and drove back home. As I was showing my RV to another friend we both noticed the passenger door leaning in toward the driver side door. I also noticed the paint chipping caused by the "tension bar" on the box and bike rack carrier. --I contacted Ryan at Aluminess with the issue and my disappointment at having to drive back down for them to repair it. Ryan told me he would have to talk to the engineers. This is what I received as a remedy: "I was told by our engineers that you can loosen the inside and outside bolts for the upper and lower hinges to adjust the hinge out towards the outside of the van.  You can do this by putting a piece of wood by the upper and lower hinges after you have loosened the bolts and then hit the wood with a mallet to adjust the hinge to the outside of the van which will create the space you need to close the door.  As far as the paint chipping we would need to see pictures of where this is occurring to address that issue." I sent the pictures. Again, I was met by Tyler. While I was waiting for the repair, Tyler came out to tell me that both doors had to be adjusted and the tension bar on the passenger side was too big, thus causing the paint chip. I asked how the paint repair would be handled. The short story is it was incumbent upon me to get quotes, submit the quotes and they would reimburse me. Nightmare company. read more

Aluminess is a company that makes excellent products but fails to follow through with promised upgrades. I bought an Aluminess rear door rack and full size box for my Ram ProMaster Van summer of 24 in reliance on the fact that I was told that they were going to release their PowerLift bike rack for ProMaster (which was new at the time and only available for Sprinter and Transit vans). As of the date of this review, and after asking several months in a row, Ryan (I believe he is their sales manager) has informed me that they have no timeline for a PM version of the PowerLift. Sorry, Aluminess, but that is bordering on bait-and-switch; I understand that vendors can't be all things to all people and the new product take time. But don't assure your customers that you'll be doing one thing so they'll buy your product and then fail to do it. Very disappointed in this business. read more

Ordered a Bike carrier on July 17, 2024. The rack they sent me wasn't the one I ordered. I called and emailed the company several times and nobody could help. Finally Mark phoned me back and apologized and mentioned that the rack would "work" but wasn't exactly the one I ordered. But the instructions were for the rack that I ordered. It created a lot of angst trying to make heads and tails of the contradicting products. Mark was sympathetic and offered his apologies and assured me he would make it right. We agreed on a slight partial refund. Three months later and I am still waiting on the partial refund. I have all of this documented on emails and phone records. I have spent thousands on Aluminess products in the past. No more! I am going to Owl vans!!! You should too. read more

If you're considering doing business with Aluminess, I strongly urge you to reconsider!! My experience was not just disappointing--it was insulting. I was treated with a level of disregard that bordered on contempt. I mistakenly landed on the wrong page apparently when I initially ordered a ladder and presumed tire rack. Once I discovered this mishap, I returned to their website to order the tire kit, a la carte. Incidentally, Aluminess happen to be offering a discount of the same combo that additionally included the Rotopax gas storage w/ lock ($200 value), for the exact amount that I had paid for the ladder/tire combo. Once I discovered this, I called the "customer service" number. A very dismissive Stephanie took my call, speaking over me numerous times as I attempted to explain my error in hopes that they could still honor their special pricing and include the Rotopax in my order. Ha, she stated 'we do not give away free product'...??!! I asked her to do that math again for me. She put me on hold. Upon returning to the call, she again affirmed that they would not be honoring the special for me as I did not initially land on the correct tab to order the 'on special combo' and had ordered al a carte. I was met with defensiveness instead of solutions. No apology. No effort to make things right. Just a cold shrug and a "not our problem" attitude. I asked if I could speak to a sales manager, which she informed me, laughingly, calling off all the eight employees, that none of them would give me a different answer. She punted me to their parent company, Bestop, which I also called. They preceded to tell me that they let Aluminess runs their own business operations and would also not intervene. All this to say, this wasn't just bad service--it was a clear message that my business wasn't valued. If you care about professionalism, enjoying being a repeat customer, or basic human decency, look elsewhere. Unfortunately for them, with all of us road warriors, word gets out fast!!! This company is out to cheat the uninformed customer monetarily through abuse of Sales Tax and Shipping Overcharges! Check your math before you place your order and call them out on discrepancies!! And it's evident by all the other negative reviews that folks are likely unhappy but likely missing this key issue. Don't believe me, you can check yourself. Pick a shipping zip code and start testing. I have stricken Aluminess from my purview based on my findings but I doubt they will care based on these wait times people talk about. I was interested in Bumpers, Box and tire carrier for an Express shipped to Texas. They have it all and with a current 10% discount the prices were acceptable. It all fell apart right there though. 1. Their website cannot accommodate shipping bumpers and the Deluxe Box Explorer Edition. If it is in the cart it breaks the checkout platform. 2. Cheating the customer on Sales Tax! Aluminess is headquartered in Santee, CA. The sales tax rate in Santee is 7.75% for IN STATE PURCHASERS ONLY. If they are charging you more than that they are cheating you by skimming the overage as PROFIT for them. Additionally, per CA PUB 101, OUT OF STATE customers are not to be charged sales tax, specifically if the merchandise is being shipped directly to them. Yet on my receipt it shows them attempting to charge me $563.90 in Taxes. I should be paying $0 as they have no physical presence in my state but lets play along for a moment. My subtotal for front and rear bumpers is $6150. 10% off promotion reduces the total to $5,535, multiply that by the 7.75% sales tax and you get $428.96. Where is the other $134.94 going? Lets assume the $563.90 is correct, that would mean they are charging 10.19% sales tax on the discounted amount or 9.17% on the non-discounted subtotal. NONE of those numbers are correct and all equates to them skimming profits from us. 3. Overcharging on shipping. Another well known manufacturer quoted a freight shipping charge for one of their bumpers at $400 from OR to TX. That's further than Santee to me. Yet Aluminess charges a flat fee of $650 PER BUMPER. One bumper was $650, you want that back bumper too, oh that's a full $650 more. $1300 in freight shipping is not even remotely a fair price to the consumer. Again, nothing but skimming and profit in their pocket. This company is literally skimming hundreds of dollars off consumers in singular orders. read more

I was building a more budget friendly project, as my Sprinter is a work van. Aluminess's ladder was not the cheapest ladder out there, but the quality and fit/finish were so good that I didn't want to scrimp on this detail. It worked with my budget roof rack, and ties perfectly with the side steps that I bought. Their customer service team was awesome, when there was an ordering mistake on my side. Good company, good people and good products. I'll order more from Aluminess when I transition my van to a personal vehicle and outfit it for camping. read more

Very disappointed. The tire rack I bought works well now that I have modified it, unfortunately " customer service" is so poor that it really doesn't exist. There is no tech help. There are virtually no instructions. My rack came missing pieces and with bolt holes that don't line up with vehicle or were wrong size to accommodate the included hardware. Aluminess has an agent to answer phone- she is very nice, but no ability to talk with a tech. The agent had me send emails with pics and problem description (7 emails and 9 phone calls so far) but I never get a response. This has been going on for over a month so far. My mechanic is now trying to find a source for the stainless hardware missing from kit. Bummed. I'm wondering if the company even exists anymore. They really left me hanging read more

I ordered some parts for a bike rack from Aluminess and it was going to arrive later than expected based on the delivery date. I reached out and asked if I could cancel, but they said basically said "don't worry, we'll overnight it". A simple mistake was made when shipping and the shipment was still going to arrive too late, but they went ahead and shipped another one that got to me just in time before I needed the part. Weeks ago I called twice and opted to get a callback each time since the wait was long. I did not receive a callback both times so I called back a few days later and decided to wait it out on hold. When I finally spoke to a customer service rep, I was impressed by his patience and professionalism. I imagine their phones are quite busy. He (Carlos) explained options and set up an appointment for free installation 2 weeks later. I bought a deluxe box, rack and a few accessories. My experience in-shop was outstanding. Their sales rep (Wheeler) was polite, efficient and knowledgeable. I greatly value good customer service. The install took longer than I expected (3 hours) but the great customer service more than made up for it. The final result was amazing. Their products are clearly high quality (good workmanship, solid long-lasting material and good aesthetics). I will definitely buy from them again. Bottom line, be patient and have them do the installation (if you can). Ultimately, they are a good, established company, have a great product. I have a roof rack, front bumper, ladder and surf racks from Aluminess and used them for appx 2 years. Generally the products are high quality and I have been happy. Recently I was on a road trip and one of the surf racks disappeared after the main connection bolt came loose. Upon original purchase and installation of the surf racks, there was no mention of needing to check the product to ensure bolts remained tight. I called Aluminess and they claimed no responsibility for what I consider to be a defective design/install. Hannah stated that the product comes with loctite. However, I provided a picture of the bolt that remained after the rack fell and there was no such sign of loctite. I had no choice but to order a replacement for the rack at full charge. They weren't even willing to offer any kind of discount for the loss of the product due to defective design. It is clear that they are absolutely killing it in the market so I'm very surprised that they weren't willing to offer any kind of discount after I have purchased over $5,000 worth of product from them. A $20 discount, shoot, even waiving the $10 shipping fee would've avoided this review. Well, I received the replacement product in the mail and it has been re-designed including the bolt and instructions which clearly illustrates the recognition of a defective product issue. However, the company chooses not to take any ownership of the issue nor any effort to invest in Goodwill with their customers. I will avoid purchasing product from them in the future as there are many other vendors and solutions in the market now so just keep in mind their shortsighted mentality. read more

This review focuses as much on the customer service I received from Aluminess, as it does their products. Overall, I have been mostly pleased with Aluminess products, with the exception of the boxes and swing arms on a bumper I purchased for my '07 Tacoma. The latches, rivets and bushings/pivots all failed in some way on those, and I ended up having to rebuild parts of the system. Aluminess did send me the parts, but I was really disappointed at how quickly they failed. All four bumpers I have purchased have been fairly good products overall in terms of function. However they are becoming outdated in terms of the cut outs and mounting options for for modern lighting products. As for service, my experience was pretty poor. I'll start with the ordering and tracking process: All of that is done via phone calls and email. My delivery dates remained a mystery essentially until my items were on my front porch. I sent several emails about one of my bumpers to try and line up shipping, and they were never returned. When the bumper was finally ready to ship, I got an email on a Friday asking for the shipping address - which I had emailed to them weeks before. This meant that my bumper sat on their dock over the weekend. Most recently I bought a front and rear bumper for my 1st generation Tacoma. Getting the front bumper went pretty smoothly. Once it was installed however, I noticed that the latch cover for the winch compartment did not fit correctly, and I also recently had one of the mounting tabs for the fog lamps break off. I was able to get these flaws repaired, but I had to drive 14 hours round trip to do so. When the rear bumper arrived for the Gen 1, I immediately realized it did not fit my vehicle. After my initial calls and emails to Aluminess about this, I realized that I might be in trouble. Their senior manager was very slow to offer a solution, and at one point said 'we're not even going to make bumpers for your model of truck anymore due to fit issues'. I was baffled by this statement. The product is listed on their web site, and they happily took my order and money for the item. Eventually Aluminess offered to have my local shop fit the bumper, which required a stack of washers for spacers and drilling new mounting holes. This was not what I was hoping for when I paid well over a thousand dollars for the bumper. Eventually the bumper was mounted up and I was mostly happy with it. However, I ended up having to cover the original mounting holes as they were letting dust in to the storage compartment, and the latch for the cover on that failed 6 moths in to ownership. More recently I noticed that the powder coating on my rear bumper is becoming dis-colored. The overall concept of what Aluminess does is great. The execution and amateur nature of the way they run their business leaves a lot of room in the market for another company to come in and build similar products, but to offer better function, quality and service. read more

Ended up getting the piece for the front because I love their products so much. They were very flexible with my forever changing schedule to make it to my appointment. Don't purchase anything from these guys! Their quality is horrible and yet they charge top dollar for their products. I recently bought a roof rack from them and it was so badly warped that they had to make me a new one which also turned out warped but not quite as badly as the first one. The problem is they weld up everything on saw horses instead of using a flat table with a jig so when they weld up a rack it moves and becomes warped and out of shape. They are aware of the problem but are unapologetic about it and still expect you to pay top dollar for a defective product. I have some very high quality aluminess products now installed on my Sprinter Van including roof rack, nerf bars and just recently a light bar and front receiver hitch. The staff has been very friendly and supportive and even scheduled an installation at their shop during a time I could come through at the end of a vacation trip. One outstanding issue however may change my rating in this review... My interior wheel wells were cut away for no apparent reason except maybe mistakenly preparing for the installation of a bumper instead of the light bar. In addition they did not reattach the wheel wells to the bumper and one of my parking sensors became detached in the installation process. Honest mistake that I hope Aluminess will make good on. Stay tuned. Update: I diagnosed the problem. The interior wheel well cutaways occurred because the fasteners were not reinstalled after the work. As a result, at freeway speed, the plastic was blown against the tires and wore "cutaways" on both sides. Aluminess is paying for the replacement interior wheel well covers and fasteners. read more

Expensive Mistake? I hope not. On June 25th I ordered about $2k worth of Door Rack, Galley Box, and Rail. I was told by Chase that they were a bit behind and that it wouldn't ship until August 20th. I figured with the current state of things, that would be alright. A few weeks later I was informed, via Email, by Sergio that my order would be delayed until September 3rd. What was one to do? That date came and went, no order, no contact. I contacted Aluminess and Hannah replied to "Clarify" the progress. Informing me that some of the parts were on their way to the powder coating company and would be delayed, again. I offered to "Will Call" the order to expedite thing as I was on a time line. She replied that could be arranged. Today, September 16th I received a notice from Fed Ex that a delivery from Aluminess was on its way in the next week, from Idaho! I once again contacted Aluminess and this time Hannah wrote that now she hadn't realized the REAL story. She wanted to re-clarify her earlier clarification. By this time I'm so frustrated that I don't know what to do. I'm really hoping that the product quality is worthy of this long, long wait (90 days) If you've read the proceeding review you may have noticed that part of the problem is that Aluminess is very disjointed and very inconsistent in regards to customer service. Three different employees, three different statements. One even made two different statements in the replies! I will follow up with a in-depth product review, if I ever get the products. They seem to be the go to specialty bumper store for 4x4 van up fits. The big flaw is their customer service attitude and availability of products. Waiting 14 weeks for a ladder is beyond reasonable. I bought my Aluminess front bumper for my 2017 Power Wagon, which has a hidden Warn winch. I will advise any who want an excellent quality bumper for their PW, Aluminess will not disappoint. It came in a crate and pallet that about half of the weight was actually the packaging. I have had Ranch Hand, Buck stop, Steelcraft, Road Armor and custom bumpers on other trucks. And, these from Aluminess are probably the best engineered and constructed. My bumper is finished to the highest degree. When installing, it will take an engine hoist and jacks to disassemble the winch mount to remove the OEM bumper mounts. I elected to have a local Dodge service department to do the install.
