I had called to inquire about a Pterygium removal consultation and they had told me to come in and they can examine me and provide me with a quote. They proceeded to give me a full eye exam which I did not ask for and billed my insurance which trickled down to me paying a bill. They had gave me the impression it was a free consultation for a surgery that would cost thousands of dollars. Bryan Lee was also quite rude and unpleasant to speak with after waiting more than an 90 minutes for him to speak with me for 5 minutes. read more

I should have checked Yelp before calling. Dr. G and most of the staff were pleasant, except for the scheduler, who was a bit difficult to deal with. I specifically wanted to see an ophthalmologist, but without any explanation, before seeing Dr. G, an optometrist came in instead and performed an eye exam--which I was later charged for. I have separate vision insurance that fully covers optometrist visits with no copay, but unfortunately, they don't accept it. Maybe I should have asked more questions before making the appointment, but I left feeling misled and taken advantage of. Also, they don't deal with Medicare, which wasn't mentioned upfront. On top of that, if you pay by credit card, Dr. G adds a 3.75% surcharge. I was told that other doctors in the same office don't charge this fee. I saw Dr. Chang in December 2024 after being referred by my eye doctor for cataracts. I received a comprehensive exam and was then asked to wait for a consultation with Dr. Chang. During the consultation, he asked me to record the conversation. He informed me that I did not have cataracts and went so far as to accuse me of attempting insurance fraud. Concerned, I returned to my original eye doctor, who conducted another thorough exam and confirmed that I did in fact have cataracts. I was experiencing typical symptoms, including blurred vision, poor night vision, starbursts around lights, double vision, and difficulty seeing in low light. I was subsequently referred to another well-respected eye surgeon, who also confirmed the diagnosis and scheduled cataract surgery. I am currently one week post-op on my right eye and three days on my left, and the results have been excellent. Additionally, I had a $40 credit with Dr. Chang's office. I called in February to request a refund and was told the office manager would return my call. After following up in April, I was treated rudely by a female billing staff member. When I called again in June, I was told a check had been sent on April 4, which I had not received. A few days later, I received a check for only $10, with no explanation for the remaining $30. This review is for cataract surgery by Dr. Brayn Lee. Dr. Lee does not communicate well with patients. During appointments he examines you, mostly in silence, writes notes mostly in silence, and then speaks very briefly in the end. When you ask questions, you get a very brief response. The second issue is that the my post surgery vision even with lenses - although the target was to not need lenses - was no better and maybe a little worse than before surgery. My cataract surgery experience with Dr. Lee was upsetting and heartbreaking to say the least. Prior to the surgery, I read through the materials to understand the pros and cons of different lenses and spent 3+ hours at the office to consult Dr. Lee to ensure I'd choose the best option in my situation. I heard and read that majority of cataract patients choose the options that would allow them to be "glasses/contacts-free" but for me, I wanted to be able to play indoor sports competitively post-surgery. I was slightly near-sighted at the time pre-surgery and wore contacts only when I played sports. I told him that I'd be happy if my vision wasn't really corrected via the surgery and left near-sighted, so I could go about the daily life without contacts/glasses and only wear contacts for sports. At the end of consultation, we agreed to go with the single focus lens, targeting "slight near-sightedness" and I could most-likely use the same contacts for sports post-surgery. I understood that the prescription could change but the same basic idea - no corrections for daily life and the contacts for sports. At the surgery center post-ops, he told me that the surgery went well and once my eye healed, I could probably use the same contacts as planned. At one of the follow-up appointments at the office, the optometrist told me happily that my distance vision improved to "near perfect" that I probably don't need the glasses for driving, etc. -which most patients desire but not me. That's when I realized that the lens inserted was "generally appealing" setting but not what he and I discussed and agreed on. What really made me unhappy was that Dr. Lee insisted that this was what I requested, he did nothing wrong, etc. He also suggested he could offer the $2K laser surgery at no cost but when I asked in email, he didn't even reply what it involved, how it would help my situation. He was clearly irritated, pushed the issue to my regular optometrist without communicating to her, canceled the 3-way appointment my optometrist set up with him without a notice, just unprofessional all the way around. At the end, a year after the surgery, he refunded my out of pocket expense of $475 for astigmatism correction, I'm left with having a hard time with the near-vision, looking at the monitor and cell phone throughout the day and tried multiple prescription contact lenses for distance AND reading as distance is not good enough for playing sports and near-sight focus is now "pushed-out". My lens may be clearer now but I am now dealing with both distance AND close-up visions and feeling nauseous because of that. read more

Far more expensive than originally communicated but performance of the medical team was first class. Dr David Chang clearly laid out the strengths and weaknesses of each possible approach to cataract surgery. I selected the higher cost Vivity multi-focal lenses (they will be with me for the rest of my life). I was told to expect slightly less than perfect vision at the furthest distance, perfect vision at mid distance as well as for the computer, and that I would need reading glasses up close for the first time in my life. Post-surgery, this is exactly what I ended up with. Clearly communicated and delivered as promised. But on the billing side, a very nasty surprise. During the pre-op visits, I was told to expect to pay $2,800 per eye ($5,600 in total) based on typical insurance reimbursement rates. In reality, I paid over $8,700. What was the biggest gotcha? Out of network costs. I was smart enough to ask Dr Chang's office in my first scheduling call whether they were "within network" for my insurance (United Healthcare). They said yes. But they never communicated that the surgical center used was not associated with them and that they were NOT within network. And therefore insurance paid a much lower percentage. read more

Earlier in the week I received phone messages from Dr. Lee both on my mobile and land line apologizing for the mixed up and stress caused. When I called back as requested, he explained to me about the dispute with insurance company and how it had dragged on for a very long time. He sounded very sincere and kind, the amount in dispute I had paid to the collecting agency will be reimbursed as they've decided to write it off. Today I received a check for the amount I paid and a hand written note from Dr. Lee apologizing again. .... I am very impressed by Dr. Lee's professionalism and integrity, he took responsibility to resolve an unpleasant situation with his patient. I couldn't ask for a better outcome. read more

It's been more than 5 months since my second cataract surgery. I have been suffering, and continue to suffer with irritation/inflammation since. The first problem that was apparent was that the vision was blotched with startling and painful lines of bright light and sheets of light, even in the day. It was caused by a fold in the tissue under the new lens. Dr. Chang called about it and seemed annoyed at me and clearly wanted me to leave it like that. I don't know if he was just gaslighting me but he told me 50% of surgeries have this and only 25% of those have it removed with a laser. He admonished me to read the literature, and I did again, and there is no mention of a wrinkle to be a usual outcome. Either that was a lie, or there was fraud, because I paid thousands above the medicare price to put in expensive lenses to prevent streaks and halos. A second doctor helped me with laser surgery so that the streaking was better. Even though the second doctor knew I was having a terrible time with the irritation, he didn't even look at it until I asked him. My mistake was telling him that Dr. Chang was the surgeon. After that he just wanted me gone. And that's when it was verified that I have infection, with many styes. This second doctor, too, was blaming me, for worrying about it! It was the third doctor who finally tried to help me with kindness and medicine. But it still continues. Patients are warned about "dry eye" which has the same symptoms as this infection. They are not warned about infection. Another problem: I had side effects from the steroid eye drop. I called about this, hoping they had a different medicine to try. The receptionist said I'd get called back, if not today, tomorrow; if not tomorrow, Monday; and there was never a call. Meantime I was suffering with floating irrational fear and rapid weight gain from the steroid. Those were terrible days. When I finally had the scheduled appointment with the optometrist, she told me how the medicine can get into the sinus cavities and I was able to restrict it. Knowledge was all that was needed, and there was nothing about this in the literature I was given. During the first surgery, I woke to "Don't squeeze, don't squeeze". I had no idea I was squeezing anything, I had no capability to do anything, I thought it was an instruction for his assistants. In the second surgery, it was "Hold your eye open or I can't do a good job". It was stunning that he would victim-blame, even before I knew I was his victim, and while I was hardly conscious. I recommend you go elsewhere. And I suggest that if *anyone* in the office is an unkind person, run away fast. You don't want to do such a sensitive procedure where unkindness is allowed. read more

I am very happy with my cataract surgery by Dr. Bryan Lee in June 2021. I had a total of 6 office visits after the surgery including 4 adjustment sessions of my Light Adjustable Lens (LAL). His team was very professional and thorough in testing my eyes during each visit. Dr. Lee was patient to keep adjusting my lens until I was satisfied. I have been a loyal customer of Altos Eye for over 15 years having my cataracts removed by Dr. Chang whom i consider to be world class physician, ongoing eye exams with Dr. Grewal, and glasses fit by their in house optometrist. However, their office business policies leave much to be desired. When I contacted the office asking why my normal check up had not been scheduled, they told me that I could still come in but i would have to pay for everything out of pocket (well over $300 for a normal 20 minute check up + extra for glasses) if I wanted to continue to use their services. The office said they were instructed not to contact patients about this change. At this point, I was stuck since i had already paid for the vision plan from my company for calendar 2024 which they no longer accepted. This action forced me to scramble to find another ophthalmologist. When I asked the Altos Eye business office to move my records to this new practice I was informed they were charging me $25. Basically, I was left high and dry without any warning, had to scramble to find another doctor who accepted my company's vision plan, then charged to move my records for a change they caused. I guess that is what 15 years of giving them all my eye related business is worth to them. read more

While there are great doctors like Dr. David Chang, the staff there is extremely irresponsible and arrogant! I have had many bad experiences with the staff-- they have no accountability for their actions. My eye surgery was cancelled-- Practice Manager lied that they called and left the message. The receptionist is just too snobbish-- as if they are giving a charity. Their website is full of problems-- "make an appointment" goes to "contact us" page. The phone message is misleading. I suppose they are getting too much business where a patient is just another customer at the best. read more

Horrible experience with Ajita Grewal. She performed a bad surgery which left me with worse vision - certifiable visually impaired, and in tremendous pain. I had to take a month off work, was taking pain killers twice a day and eventually had to visit another clinic to correct what she did wrong. The worst part is she tried to break this surgery up, telling me that I had to come back for at least 3 more visits to achieve my desired result so they could bill my insurance for 3 more visits. Their competitor was better equipped and helped me in one visit, correcting my vision and alleviating the pain. I cannot stress this enough - Please do yourself a favor and stay away from this unprofessional place. read more

"We don't take walk-ins." Like a hair salon? Yesterday I had surgery affecting my vision for the rest of my life. AND I paid $10,000. Eventually I talked to a young assistant, but my concerns were not fully satisfied. Perhaps boring and repetitious Reception duties might be shared among the office staff to relieve the understandable tedium? The doctor, however, was great. And that's of course the most important consideration. The patient coordinator was also thorough and friendly, and even wrote a long email answering my (too many) questions. Last year, my ophthalmologist referred me to Dr. Bryan Lee for cataract surgery. Since my first encounter with that practice, everything has gone perfectly. Dr. Lee himself is eminently qualified, and he did a perfect job on my surgery. The office staff is incredibly professional as well, and was very competent and friendly every time I visited or called. Cataract surgery is quick, easy, and painless. Bonus: The staff at the surgery center is also top-notch. Double bonus: My eyesight is soooo much better now! No reading glasses needed. Now, a little more than one year later, I need to have a piggyback lens implanted. This happens with some patients, and I won't go into the technical details here. But it has nothing to do with the doctor's skill. Dr. Lee will be handling this procedure, and based on my previous surgical experience with him, I almost look forward to it. OK, that's a stretch. While the Dr. Chang is a good surgeon, be prepared to be a part of an assembly line with incredibly long waits in the waiting room and the attitude that they are doing you the favor of seeing you. Their attitude seems to be more about money and the patient just one number among many. The billing system is atrocious and I have never had any other physician or hospital bill in the same way.. You are responsible for all insurance filing except Medicare and searching out if your insurance will cover the extra amounts they charge. They also stated that other insurances will not cover the extra, though ours did. The people responsible for billing do not speak English well and seem to have trouble with reasonable requests. They also quote incorrect amounts for eye drops and want you to use their pharmacy. Our pharmacy cost less than they quoted. So while the outcome was fine, the process was terrible. read more

I had cataract surgery performed by Dr. Bryan Lee about 6 weeks ago. I am very pleased with the results. I was very stressed over the decision of what IOL to implant, and Dr. Lee exchanged a number of emails with me on the subject. (Fortunately the PanOptix trifocal was approved just before my surgery and that became the best option.) Both he and his staff were very professional and patient with my questions. I felt very prepared for the surgery and the recovery. The surgery was handled by Peninsula Eye Surgery Center in Mountain View and I was also very happy with my experience there. I made an appointment for a routine checkup for May 21, 9 am. When i showed up they had no record of my appointment. They kept ogling the computer screen, asking how i spelled my name, then a second assistant was called who repeated the same questions. She said they dont have even a history for me , when i had been there and had a prescription. The place is clueless. read more

I just recently had my second eye (Left eye) done for cataract surgery with Dr. Chang. I had my right eye done about 7 years ago with Dr. Chang as well. I just want to say that the staff at Altos eye physicians and the Peninsula eye surgery center are top notch, very professional and extremely knowledgeable. I went in to see Dr. Chang about 4 weeks ago and after taking several eye tests it was determined that my cataract was getting pretty bad and I needed to have the surgery done right away. I actually waited about 3 weeks to have it done due to scheduling but I must say the wait was well worth it. I now see 20/20 in both eyes and sometimes it even gets to 20/15. I am so grateful to have seen Dr. Chang and his amazing staff and would encourage anyone who is considering cataract surgery to see Dr. Chang or any of the amazing Dr.'s at Altos Eye Physicians. Your eye sight should never be taken for granted and to now be able to see colors and the world in a different light and perspective is the greatest thing. Update of the story. It's been a year since they tried to bill me for the preventive eye exam services which is fully covered by my insurance. I spent a total of ~6 hours of my time trying to settle the situation. Called insurance company several times. Every time they were friendly, agreed with my arguments, and told me that the doctor's office used incorrect billing codes when submitting the claim - they used the "visit caused by medical conditions" code instead of "preventive eye exam". Several times we called doctor's office together (!). Typical result when calling their office - they ask you to wait on hold, and then after 5-10 minutes waiting they hung up on you. Really??? Still, several times we were able to call through and speak to the billing representative. Every time she promised to resubmit the claim to the insurance provider using the correct code. And every time I received - AGAIN - exactly the same bill from the doctor's office. On my insurance company's site there is no information about any resubmitted claims or any contacts whatsoever from the doctor's office!! (I even called insurance to confirm, and yes they said that nobody contacted them). By all and any means, if you want to keep your sanity - and money - do NOT use them. I am a glaucoma and cataract  patient. About three years ago , I was referred to Dr Bryan Lee for a corneal complication due to right eye  cataract surgery in other place.  Since then, Dr. Lee had performed  two corneal and one cataract surgeries for me. The results are all wonderful. As I feel every day improvement of my vision recovery, I also experienced many kind of  complications due to my body's reaction. Thanks to Dr. Lee's excellent surgical skills and knowledge, he's able to help me overcome and recover from them. He always tell me what's going on with my eyes and how he's going to tackle the problems. I am really appreciated that Dr. Lee help me regain my normal vision. Dr. Grewal has been examining my eyes since I got glasses at 9 years old and contact lenses at 11. I am 25 now, and so glad I still get to come here due to the excellent doctors. I'm only giving three stars because I don't think I have ever been seen on time. Always 15-45 minutes after my appointment was scheduled, which is pretty inconvenient. Make sure you schedule your appointment either first thing in the morning or right after lunch, or be prepared to wait a long time. read more

Dr. David F. Chang M. D. is truly amazing! He is Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, at UCSF specializing in Cataract Surgery! He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. I recently completed having my 2 eyes implanted with multi-focal lens. For those who have never heard of it It is a permanent artifical lens. Measured by a computer for a special prescription it can decrease you dependence on glasses for us older citizens. His office is at Altos Oaks Drive in Los Altos and the staff is run very professionally and friendly! The surgery is preformed at the Penninsualeye surgery center in Mountain View on El Camino.The staff there also is fabulous. I found him on the internet and was so impressed by his resume I just decided to make an appointment. His credentials speak for themselves. I highly recommend Dr. Chang and his staff. It was a very positive 4 star experience. He performs more cataract surgery than any other Dr. in the state of California so his experience is on the patients side. There is almost nothing as intimidating as cataract surgery for me. My husband had both eyes done with Dr. Chang and I have thus far had one cataract surgery. The doctor is so very competent, explanatory, caring, and fast. His staff is knowledgeable and caring both in his office and at the surgery center. I will have another surgery in a couple of weeks and would recommend this operation to anyone. You feel that you are in good hands and the results are everything they say they will be. I was referred to Dr. Bryan Lee by my optometrist because the cataracts that developed after I took medication for my seasonal allergies were negatively affecting my vision. Because I am much younger than the typical cataract patient, I was nervous about the outcome of the surgery knowing that my near vision likely would not be the same. Dr. Lee patiently explained all of my options helping me arrive at the best possible solution for my situation (early cataracts plus significant astigmatism) - not a typical choice for those getting cataract surgery. Dr. Lee went above and beyond to ensure that I was satisfied with the outcome, which involved additional "touch-up" Lasik - without making me feel like I was being difficult or that my expectations were unreasonable. I've been visiting Altos Eye Physicians since I was 12 - I'm now 29. If that doesn't validate the quality of this practice, I don't know what will. I have never had a bad experience here; the entire staff is incredibly knowledgeable, personable and professional. I've needed corrective vision since I was 6. Prior to being introduced to Altos Eye Physicians, I had less than adequate ophthalmologists and optometrists. I was originally referred to Dr. Grewal, but have also had the pleasure to be examined by a few others. When I entered my teens I became interested in contact lenses, so I was assigned to Dr. Yang for a fitting - Yang was incredibly patient when it was time for me to learn how to put in contact lenses. My twelve-year-old self sat in a chair staring at the lens on my finger and continuously failing at trying to get that darn thing to stick in my eye. This appointment felt like it took hours, but this didn't seem to bother Dr. Yang; he was more than patient and incredibly professional while continuing to offer advice and encouragement through my struggle and frustration. Even when moving away to college, I still made a point to stick with this practice. In this time I was introduced to Dr. Chu. Along with being knowledgeable, Dr. Chu has a very warm and welcoming personality - it's always a pleasure having my annual eye exam with her. Last, but certainly not least, Dr. Grewal is an exceptional doctor who has examined my eyes for the past seventeen years. I really cannot say enough good things about her, she has not only helped me keep my eyes healthy for the majority of my life, but she has also helped keep my whole family's eyes healthy, too. Through the years I have never felt that the staff was anything less than perfect even when there were changes in staff. My wife has cataracts in both eyes plus astigmatism in her left, and she knew cataract surgery would be inevitable but wasn't sure when or where to go for the surgery until she learned from a friend about the fabulous surgery performed by Dr. Chang ten years ago on both his eyes. The elderly man had an operation on both eyes combined with multifocal lens implants, which so enhanced his vision he discarded his eyeglasses either reading or driving ever since. Encouraged by his case, my wife lost no time to make an appointment with Dr. Chang's office. What she had in mind then was only a preliminary consultation, for she knew Dr. Chang had a very busy schedule. But to her surprise, Dr. Chang walked in right after his staff gave her a thorough eye examination, notifying her that both her eyes were ready for surgery and the best choice for her would be toric lens. Lucky for her, Dr. Chang had an appointment cancelled for the following morning, which not only eliminated her waiting time but saved her the nightmare of going back on her previous decision by putting it off indefinitely. Thanks to Dr. Chang and his proficient staff, who swiftly and efficiently arranged for an operation not on schedule, my wife had the surgery early the very next morning on Aug. 23 on her right eye, which had a worse diagnosis with cataract. She was amazed by the result on the first day of her surgery combined with implant of toric lens, which, though she took a week or so to get adapted to, immediately egged her on to make an appointment for surgery on her left eye as soon as possible. It took her awhile to adjust herself to a vision without blur and to marvel at the sight of a world unobstructed by cataract until the lens implants have become integral parts of her eyes without any implications. She is so happy she just wants to take the opportunity at the end of the year to express her warmest thanks to Dr. Chang and to the remarkable staff of Altos Eye Physicians, without whose punctilious efforts and warm help, she wouldn't have the good fortune to enjoy the crystal clear sight of a world coming around with the New Year. read more
