The management and administrative staff is a problem. Long wait times to see a doctor. I recently submitted a request for an appointment for a follow up exam after surgery with no response. No one seems to care. PAMF itself is a great institution but this facility needs help. If you can find another vision center pursue it. Also, there is a review on this site about Dr. Shiuey. Pay close attention to this. read more

Our daughter had a tight window to have an yearly glaucoma eye check. Knowing how crucial this yearly test was for her and that she should have the consistancy of seeing her regular physician, the staff and doctor moved mountains to help us get an appointment. We knew that summer schedules usually meant heavily pushed back appointments, and it would be impossible to fit us in, but they understood the situation and responded quickly. Thank you, to this caring and attentive institution. read more

Called to cancel and reschedule my appointment. You cannot schedule these appointments online. I know it is the Holidays but they are open for appointments. I was on the line waiting for exactly one hour (11am -12pm). At 12 pm the call was ended and not by me. I guess they just turn the queue off for lunch. This is wrong on so many levels. I know it says that you can get a call back but I have a hearing problem plus I have other things to do. So I was waiting for an hour for nothing. Needless to say I am not happy. read more

This place received a referral from my doctor but never called to schedule an appointment. I called and called and nobody seems to pick up the phone. I left a message and no call backs. Trying to call into this place to speak to anyone is a nightmare! Do ghosts only work here? When I finally got through to schedule an appointment, I received no confirmation text or email. Trying to call back in to cancel the appointment leaves you waiting for 15 min before someone even picks up. If a simple process like this is so frustrating I can't imagine how it would be if I had a billing error. Good riddance. I will never go here. read more

My eye appointments continue to be canceled by this medical group; even though I have a major problem with one eye. Instead of sending me a lame reply, this group should fix their internal problems and mostly fix my eyeball. read more

I come here every month with my mom...The staff including the doctors are very nice and go out of the way to make you feel comfortable. My only complaint is the painful wait time. Sadly it is the norm at all doctor's offices and I wish they are able to solve it. On the plus side, they do have wifi. read more

I was nearsighted with -1.50 in the right eye and -2.00 in the left eye when I went to see Dr. Yichieh Shiuey for a PRK consultation (I am not a candidate for LASIK). Dr. Shiuey strongly urged me to get "monovision'', where my left eye would be purposely left nearsighted for near vision (like reading) while my right eye would receive the standard laser vision correction for distance vision (like driving). Dr. Shiuey urged me to have monovision because I use the computer extensively for work. He said that with monovision, I wouldn't need reading glasses until I was 60+, even though I don't wear reading glasses now and I'm under 45. Dr. Shiuey used the phoropter to simulate monovision and showed me that I could still read the text on the wall and upclose. At the consultation, I agreed with Dr. Shiuey's recommendation. At no point in time did Dr. Shiuey prescribed a contact lens trial to see if I could tolerate monovision. I've never tried monovision in the past. I only learned later, through two second opinions, that contact lens trial (for two weeks at minimum) was standard and prudent practice prior to actual monovision surgery. A 30-second phoropter test isn't sufficient to determine whether a patient could tolerate monovision for the rest of her life. About a month prior to my surgery, I had changed my mind because intentionally leaving one eye nearsighted just didn't sit well with me. I called his office to say that I wanted the standard, full vision correction for both eyes. His assistant had said she'd let Dr. Shiuey know. No one from his office had contacted me after my call to discuss. On the day of my surgery, I confirmed with Dr. Shiuey that we would be proceeding with full vision correction for both eyes. Dr. Shiuey informed me then that while he would operate on both eyes, he'd only do a very minor correction on the left eye, thus still intentionally leaving that eye nearsighted. Dr. Shiuey had informed me of his unilateral decision while I was in the pre-operating room under the sedation of Valium, only minutes prior to my surgery, without any prior discussions with me (even though this was an elective surgery), and despite the fact that he never prescribed a contact lens trial to see if I'd be a good candidate for monovision and at what prescription. The results are disastrous. I ended up with my right eye over-corrected and thus farsighted at +0.50 and the left eye still quite nearsighted at -1.75. I hated monovision immediately (just a few days post-surgery). Dr. Shiuey's response was that I'll eventually get used to it, as most patients do within a year. This response completely misses the mark. People can, of course, get used to any type of handicap overtime, but there is no reason for me to endure the monovision handicap when I simply do not want or need it. Monovision has left me feeling constantly nauseated due to the imbalance across my eyes. Just days after surgery, I've had to begin wearing glasses or contacts every waking minute to bring my eyes back into balance in order to perform daily tasks or work. I cannot see clearly far or close without the aid of contacts or glasses. I now need to endure another painful PRK surgery and recovery time to remove the monovision. While Dr. Shiuey was willing to perform another surgery to remove the monovision three months post-surgery, I've received two second opinions warning me that I should wait at least six months. I will not be going back to Dr. Shiuey as I no longer trust Dr. Shiuey's opinions and I do not believe he respected or considered my preferences. I believe that Dr. Shiuey did not adequately take the time and care to discuss my concerns, and instead, outright disregarded my preferences. His strong push for monovision, particularly when I had expressed a desire to avoid monovision, caused me unnecessary pain and suffering without any offsetting benefit. Most egregiously, it is my opinion that Dr. Shiuey was medically negligent when he proceeded with monovision eye surgery on me without a contact lens trial. read more

My wife and I were happy patients of PAMF, now Sutter Health, for 35 years. Doctors, nurses, admin staff, billing were all excellent. Sadly, no longer. Medical staff is excellent still. But billing/insurance policies are misleading to the point of deceptive. Your insurance might be accepted by Sutter, a doctor you are seeing may or may not accept that insurance. Every time you see a new doctor you have to verify that she accepts your insurance. Since doctors often sign up for and drop insurance plans, you better check your insurance even with doctors you been seeing for years. My wife every year has a certain eye test that her insurance covers. This year her eye doctor has retired and she sees a new one. By all appearances the new doc is an employee of Sutter: she has an office there, she appears on the roster, etc. My wife has test done and insurance refuses to cover because the doc does not accept her plan. In 35 years we have never had such problem. If PAMF/Sutter accepts plan, we assumed all docs accept the same plans and we were always right. Not anymore. Be careful. They are not looking for you. We will be re-evaluating our using Sutter. read more

My review posted 2/21 about coding error of Sunnyvale Vision Center of Palo Alto Medical Foundation was responded finally. They sent the charges for the 11/25 service for review and I received a response 3/2. I was told that they have corrected the coding error. However when can I get refunded for over $700 I paid for the wrong coding, their billing staff told me that they do not show the payment being received. So my questions is when the billed amount of $774.40 has changed to "Your balance: $zero", what does that mean? Can someone explain to me on this: after I made the payment on Jan. 9, and after my balance showed ZERO, I was told now that they don't have my payment shown in their billing system? I have spent so much time on this coding error from PAMF and I guess I will have to spend more time on this billing issue....? read more

This review is for the rude front desk person on the Level 2 West El Camino Optometry Department, Elizabeth. My wife was merely 5 minutes late for the appointment (June 26, 2021, at 11 am) due to being stuck at her dentist appointment, yet she was rather rude about the situation. My wife used the EZ Arrival, which helps the staff know where you're physically at, paid your co-pay, and less interaction with the front desk. However, this didn't deter Elizabeth from being an arrogant employee. When my wife checked in with her, rude Elizabeth mentions, "Let me ask the doctor if she can still see you since your appointment is at 11." Thankfully the MA picked up my wife, whom she explained why she was late. The MA was empathetic and knew where my wife was coming from. Then, when the actual optometrist met my wife, she apologized and said she was also running late due to having an emergency patient. Doctor Sangita Shah was apologetic for Elizabeth's behavior. Sadly she is front desk and, therefore, should have a friendly demeanor. Otherwise, I am unsure why she is at this job, especially at a prestigious institution like Sutter Health. I instructed my wife to get her name (via text communication), and when she asked her name, good ole Ms. Elizabeth said, "Why do you want to know my last name? I'm not comfortable giving you my last name?" I told my wife, don't worry, her name, position, and the department are plenty. Dear Sutter Health, Do not let this insolent person work at your company if she cannot be nice to someone who is just checking in, 5 minutes late, who ended up waiting for the optometrist who was also late. Know your audience, know who you're messing with. Sometimes people like Elizabeth want to pry on someone who currently has a corneal abrasion & postpartum, yet Elizabeth isn't entirely aware she is the prey. Please do not mess with my family, or you will be humiliated through my complaint on how ridiculous you acted on a beautiful Saturday, Summer. Karma never sleeps, so don't neglect your duty while you're on the front lines of Sutter Health. read more

My wife went there for a peripheral vision test. While taking a quick look at her eyes the doctor found a small broken eyelash in one of them. He took it out and conducted the test without complications. A week later we received an unexpected bill of $185 for a "foreign body removal surgery". Not cool. UPDATE: I contacted the billing team before leaving my original review here. I was told that any kind of foreign body removal counts as surgery, and that patients must be familiar with their insurance coverage (obviously, I'm not sure why they kept telling me this). Most of the bill is paid by insurance but that's beside the point. In any case, my recommendation is that you thoroughly clean your eyes before going for a checkup. read more

Dr. Fong is the WORST ophthalmologist I have ever had. Personality sucks, no interpersonal skills whatsoever, and she f***ed up my vision test TWICE. You see, when you pay $300 for glasses and they don't work, but they match the prescription, then the optician (eyeglass manufacturer) doesn't refund since he did nothing wrong. The doctor screwed up by writing the wrong prescription, but I have to eat the cost. NEVER AGAIN. EVER. AVOID. Their other staff may be ok, but avoid Dr Fong at all costs. I used to see Dr Fain and he was great, but he retired. read more

Beware of PAMF billing mistakes. Wife went for treatment with flashes in the eye symptom. As part of treatment and checkup they billed it as eye checkup which falls under Vision Insurance and insurance refuses to pay since this is considered regular eye check up which in this case is not true. Any medical eye issue will require a full eye checkup which is different than that for eye prescription glasses. PAMF refuses to accept doctors billing mistake and refuses to help. Insurance is willing to pay provided PAMF change the billing code but PAMF is not willing. read more

When I accidentally paper cut my own eye (yes, it happened), I came here for a walk in appointment with the oncall doctor scheduled by my PCP. The wait was pretty long, but service was great. The building is rather new and there's plenty of parking around. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I have retinopathy of prematurity, and I go to this location primarily for retina care. I also see an optometrist, who I see for my glasses. Here they told me it would take 45 minutes to dilate my eyes! My optometrist says it will take 20 minutes. Every time I go to both of them, they say everything is stable. No changes. So the retina specialist says I don't need to see her anymore, I can see an optometrist. I'm already blind in one eye, and I'd like to keep the other one, so my retinas are rather important to me, whether they have been stable for a while or not. I only see her every two years, anyway. I voiced concern about this, and she assured me the optometrist she was referring me to would know if I had a problem with my retina. If that's the case, why do we need retina specialists? I left feeling like my concerns were not met, or listened to. read more

I worked with Dr. Shiuey and Kristin for months before deciding to go through the procedure. I finally had gone through enough free consultations to move forward and go forward with LASIK. On the day of the surgery, it seemed like a simple procedure. Half way through the operation, the machine had a malfunction and stopped half way through the surgery. Of course, this scared the living daylights out of me. On the very next day, I was told that things were ok, and I try again in two weeks. As a consolation, he offered a $100 dollar discount for the mishaps. You got to be kidding. This time, I went to get a second and third opinion as well. I find out that Dr. Shiuey was the only other doctor that recommended LASIK after the mishaps at his office. I obviously went with a different doctor. It seems Dr. Shiuey is a good guy, but just does not have enough experience in vision eye correction. read more

Good, competent vision care and friendly, professional staff but making appointments and follow up visits is a royal pain. I use this for my eye care and have always found the treatments to be fine but what really stinks is their way of making appointments and follow on visits. I gather that they have many patients and are not able to schedule things efficiently so that they either can't do it when you are at the facility trying to schedule a future visit (they just take your info and say someone will get back to you but this never seems to happen) or they have you call in, put up with endless phone transfers to automated recordings, and then put you on hold and hang up on you. Really bad service and this is so frustrating. The difficulty in scheduling needed appointments is the only blemish on an otherwise competent and effective medical care facility. read more

I've waited to write this review for about a year now. I got my LASIK surgery done then, and I can definitely say that this has changed my life! If you are eligible for it, you should absolutely do it. The staff here is absolutely terrific, they took the best care of me. Kristin is one of the nicest people I have ever come across anywhere. Dr. Shiuey really discussed all the details of the procedure to my satisfaction which really put me at ease for the procedure. read more

I wish I could give more than five stars. Dr. Shiuey has given me the gift of perfect vision! I have worn glasses since I was 8, and I can say, there is nothing compared to waking up, being able to see. Kristin is so pleasant and helpful throughout the entire process, I look forward to my visits just to catch up with her! Dr. Shiuey is very professional, and very easy to work with, and you can tell vision is his passion! As far as the procedure, it didn't hurt at all, and being prescribed unlimited sleep after the surgery wad a dream come true! I had my surgery on a Wednesday and by Friday I was back to work. Ten out of ten I would recommend to anyone without perfect vision. read more

I am a physician and called this clinic at 1085 w El Camino for 2 week post Op follow up for my wife who had surgery done at Minneapolis (due to insurance network). This was at the recommendation of one of their own physicians who takes care of my other family members. The appointment folks picked up after a long waiting period and gave quite a round about re: unavailability and about other non-sense about inability to take new patients. They should post this at their website instead of wasting patient's time so that they can seek care elsewhere. I would not recommend this place for my patients. Very shoddy service. I wonder how they treat folks who are not well oriented to healthcare complexities. read more

Incredibly happy with my decision to have Lasik done by here Dr Shuiey. I first went here over a year ago, when i started considering laser eye correction. Kristin was very helpful with scheduling an appointment and promptly taking care of some preliminary tests when I arrived. Very soon after that Dr Shuiey saw me, and answered all my concerns about the different methods of addressing my moderate astigmatism, and which would be most suitable for my active lifestyle. I really liked that there was no pressure to proceed, and both Kristin and Dr Shiey were very open and helpful with my questions about the cost. I continued to talk to other eye surgeons, and while there were cheaper options available I didnt want to proceed with surgeons who tried to use high-pressure sales tactics, or didn't want to spend any time talking about my concerns regarding possible problems with high-impact sports and night vision. Two months ago I decided to proceed with Dr Shiuey and I am so glad I did. The surgery went fine, and while i did have a little pain and dryness in the days afterwards, I was able to get in to see the good doctor on short notice, and they new drops he prescribed sorted that out quickly. I now have 20/15 vision in both eyes, and love that I never need glasses - i even use sunglasses less than before the surgery, and my night vision is much better than it ever used to be even with glasses. I would strongly recommend talking to the staff at PAMF about permanent escape from needing glasses. read more

Great first experience here. I have had eye condition requiring treatment for the past 14 years. So, for me, changing ophtalmologist was a big deal when moving here just recently. I was damn scared of not finding similar eye care I did in San Diego (that was superb, awesome my Dr. Lozier and my Antoinette in the front desk, I miss them so much). I also found a welcoming environment in this Sunnyvale office. I liked the front desk lady, very friendly and nice to me as new patient I was. Then Gigi and Sarita were awesome assistants/technicians (not sure their roles, but they were great). Dr. Halperin was very attentive and friendly. I am glad a coworker mentioned this center close to my work place, I will come back for next check up. read more

I have a million eye doctors, but I had to come here when I was diagnosed with GD. I loved how quick and effecient they were in this location. I admit, I was running late--I got there at 3:45 for my 3:40 appointment. I hadn't even finished checking in yet, they already called me for my appointment. Whoo hoo! A doctor that runs ON TIME? Hell yes. Dr. Preston was so nice. He was really quick to explain the nature of my visit and what they were trying to keep an eye on. He walked me through each of tests and had me in and out as quickly as possible. Thanks everyone! I would not mind coming back here at all! #Yelp100Challenge read more

I had a similar experience as a fellow yelper where I was told by the retina specialist here (Dr. Tanya Ghosh was who I saw) that I didn't need to see her anymore, and to see her fellow optometrist instead. Um, well, I've been seeing retina specialists for the previous eight years, and I've never been told that before. My optometrist (eight years before) had seen something in my retina and had referred me to a retina specialist, who then told me that I should see one every year to monitor my eyes. I move often and have seen a few different retina specialists, and every retina specialist I've been to have always told me the same thing--follow up once a year with a retina specialist, and since I value my sight, I have gone religiously every year. Although nothing significant had changed in my eyes for years, Dr. Tanya Ghosh is the only one who was so annoyed that I was seeing her for apparently no reason. She made it clear to me after the appointment that I was not to see her any more unless her fellow optometrist referred me. That didn't seem right to me so I made a mental note to look for a new specialist. Well, luckily, I moved out of state the next year and my new retina specialist spotted a tear in one of my retina and performed laser surgery the same day. Retinal tears left untreated can lead to blindness (!), so I do not take this lightly. I'm so glad I didn't listen to Dr. Tanya Ghosh; no way would I recommend her to anyone. I have not seen any other practitioners at this location, but I do remember the wait to be seen took forever, the longest I've ever experienced. The worst is when they dilate your eyes and forget about you...you're left sitting there with nothing to do--you can't even read because of the dilation! read more

1-star - simply to be able to post this review. PAMF Vision Center gained my business because their main medical center takes care of our full family pretty well. Now they have lost it! How? Please read on... We came here for my son's follow up appointment(appt). and I specifically asked before the appt. if his insurance would be any issue. I explained how we had X vision and Y medical plans etc. They told me no worries, and to go on with appt. Now, a month or so later, I am told they don't accept X vision plan and Y medical plan refused the bill. This does not sit well with me as a customer. They should have looked carefully and advised me correctly. I am now left with a near $300 bill to foot!! Sorry, but we won't return and hope others look before they leap, before choosing this place for their vision care. read more

After a bunch of research, I decided to have my Lasik procedure done at PAMF. I could not be any more satisfied. I found the front desk staff, ophthalmic technicians, and Dr. Shiuey very professional. The Lasik coordinator that walked me thru the whole process was especially warm and patient. You can tell that the staff really cared about their patients. They were very honest about the risks and possible side effects. I did not feel at all pressured to go thru with the procedure, but they gained my confidence with their outstanding attitude that I decided to go for it. I was very nervous the day of my procedure, but my anxiousness subsided the moment I met the Lasik coordinator. She took some last minute measurements and I was given some forms to sign. The whole procedure itself took only about 15 minutes. The procedure was surprisingly painless and pleasant. The results were AMAZING! After the first day, I already had 20/20 vision. It has only improved after a month. I cannot rave enough about this clinic. If you are on the fence about Lasik, I implore that you do some research. If you do decide on doing it, I highly recommend Dr. Shiuey and PAMF. You will not find a better clinic to have this procedure performed. I admit it was very pricy, but it was the best use of my money. I realize that results of Lasik correction will vary, but you owe it to yourself to at least go in for a consultation. read more

Kristin is like the nicest person on the face of the planet. She has been so accommodating and wonderful. Dr Shiuey was fabulous and a true expert. Kristin made sure everything worked with my schedule and Dr. Shiuey made sure all of my questions were answered before we proceeded. The surgery went off without a hitch and I noticed an improvement in my vision immediately after. Dr. Shiuey performed LASIK surgery on my right eye in January and I couldn't possibly have asked for a better result. The day after surgery I had 20/25 vision, and 2 months after surgery I had 20/20. Perfect! So awesome!
