When we were done with the session she noticed that the lightener we used did not make me as bright as the inspo picture that I showed her originally. She is so humble, thoughtful, and passionate about her craft that she quickly offered to do another session with me to get me to the blonde that I wanted. She saved me the embarrassment and guilt of having to ask or leaving disappointing with the result because I can be a shy when it comes to these sort of things. 6 years ago AZ Hair company let me down, ever since then, Altered Ego has been my salon. The inside of the salon itself is nice. Stylish and neatly decorated, often with seasonal touches. I've never taken advantage of the fact that the salon serves cafe' beverages to you while you're getting on with your appointment, but I love that they do have that option (and always offer at the start of your appointment). One day I'll get a service that is short so I can enjoy a cup of tea without fear of having to pee a bunch while in the cape. My usual stylist is Amber. She's an artist with hair, and a gift to society as a human being. She's just an all-around a lovely person, who is easy to talk to and be around. PLEASE NOTE: This is an important factor when you consider that the person who does your hair is someone you might wind up being around for hours at a time... stuck in a chair... and an armless cape... while wearing a tin-foil hat. In summation: I. Love. Amber. I hope if she ever has to move far away she'll at least find a way to tell me where she's posted up shop so that I can keep her as my hair wizard. All the cuts, styles and dye jobs I've had done on my hair here have been magnificent. I'm moving to Chandler soon, but you can bet I'll be keeping Altered Ego (and Amber), as my go-to hair spot. Came to Altered Ego a couple of weeks ago for my first balayage hair coloring. I showed my stylist an 'inspo' pic of how I would like it (shown below). I think he could have done a much better job with my hair. My hair does not look like balayage at all, even my friends noticed (sadly), but rather highlights! Which is very upsetting. I also did not ask for caramel strips in my hair, but my stylist randomly did it. I am not happy with my hair from Altered Ego. I paid $180 and it was not worth it whatsoever. read more

I got my hair cut and colored by Jenny, I think pictures speak louder than words but I basically asked for more wispy side bangs and instead I got huge choppy chunks that go back to the middle of my head. I tried to work with what she did but seeing in unstyled was even worse if that's possible. I didn't even realize the back of my head was just as choppy until I went to another hairdresser. Not to mention the color is completely different than what I asked for as well. When I went to another salon they couldn't do much to help considering how much was already cut off. I reached out to the girl who did my hair and she said that because I went to someone else to fix it they couldn't refund me. But why would I go back to someone who had already done so much damage? I also spoke to someone at the front desk and she told me the same thing. Both said they would talk to the owner to see what they could do and no one has gotten back to me at all. I now see that this particular stylist does a certain style of haircuts, but if she knew she couldn't do the cut I asked for she should have referred me to someone else and not ruined my hair. I struggle giving two stars. And that would have mostly been for the time this hairstylist spent on doing my daughter's hair. Which is also a negative. I have never spent 5 hours getting my hair done. Or getting my 16 yr old daughter's hair done, which is long. But never has it taken anyone over 3 hrs to do her hair. That said, I had to immediately take her back in and have her bangs fixed as they were choppy. The stylist said it's just about how you style it. I wish I had taken a pic. That had nothing to do with how it's styled. I shuzshed them and they were choppy. And not an artistic choppy, which I could appreciate. A choppy that I would have never thought should be presented as acceptable. The back length is uneven. It's the first thing my 24 yr old noticed. The color/highlights are uneven on both sides. More blonde on one than the other. The bangs are even more blonde. My daughter is horrified. She wants me to fix the bangs and the brightness, because what I told the stylist was that she likes it to be more natural looking. It is not natural looking at all. I mean I hate to put such a negative review, but if you have a new stylist that takes almost twice as long and needs guidance on tone and cutting, maybe she needs more time practicing and not charging over $200 for practice time. It should have been told to me up front before the appt that she is a brand new stylist. I appreciate you getting us in on a cancellation, but now I have to take her in elsewhere and get this fixed. And she has to go to an event tomorrow embarrassed about her hair! read more

I just got my hair cut 5/27/2020. The minute you walk in you are greeted!! For the Covid-19 pandemic you have to wash your hands and wear a provided mask. I didn't have to wait for the stylist Linda. She immediately made me feel comfortable. She knew my previous hairstylist. And had nothing but good to speak of. Linda did an excellent job with my layers in my hair. They are open for both sexes. It was my first time here and when I told the hair dresser, who I don't wanna name drop, that I wanted a bang trim and 2 inches trimmed off my whole head, the first thing she said to me was "okay i'm not sure if i'll have time to do that today". which confused me because I don't want any hair dresser to say that and be rushed working with my hair. It was my first time so when I made an online appointment I selected the bang trim button and was hoping they'd also be okay to trim an inch or two off with no problem. The whole appointment lasted 10 minutes max and I really feel that I was over charged. I don't think I'll be back again. She was nice and the atmosphere was good but just not the best experience, I've definitely had better before. This was the 6th time I'd been here, and 3rd stylist at this salon (the 1st was inexperienced, the 2nd was ill), on recommendations from a good friend. After the 1st visit I went back for some minor adjustments within 1 week. After the 3rd visit, I left a voice message for the owner and explained my situation. Love the whole salon atmosphere and vibe, but have to admit the skill level of the people who cut and colored my hair seems to be questionable. I've never run into having a short haircut as a major issue, but here I think this must be what separates the people with experience from the rest. One of the main recurring issues I see is after our initial discussion, they do not check in and verify anything about what they are doing, and they proceed until you are...Done. Usually stylists will check in and ask--do you like this long or what do you think of this in the back, etc.. I have very thick hair, and have had short cuts for 40 some years, so the idea of having someone tell me it grows out in 2 weeks or that I just don't like doing my hair is additionally insulting and off putting. I'm a welder and want a wash and wear cut that is cut so well it looks great regardless. This has been possible in the past, but I'm sorry to is not happening here. I would be afraid to return to last stylist who had not listened and actively disputed my earlier feedback (in spite of her going in the right direction with the cut, and her color was very good.) I consider the cost of hair a necessary evil, but it is so sad and disappointing to feel so angry about the results. I am otherwise totally onboard and optimistic about the outcome, but even now, 3 days later I have to admit the reality that this is not working for me. read more

I have found my new go-to salon! I landed on Altered Ego after seeing the positive reviews both on Yelp and Google. After doing a little instagram searching, I decided to make an appointment with Angie. She had photos on her profile which matched the cut I was going for. I had a great experience start to finish! First, you can make an appointment online (I LOVE being able to make appointments online) without having to put in credit card information. The salon itself is super clean and modern. Everyone was very friendly and my appointment began on-time. Angie was great! She was super thorough and gave me the exact cut I was looking for (shoulder length blunt cut with slight a-line). It matched the picture I brought in to a T. Another huge plus, it's very reasonably priced. I don't feel like you should have to pay $100+ for a haircut anywhere and can hardly believe how difficult it is to find salons that charge fair prices. My experience there was unfortunately a bad one for me. Instead of coming out of the salon feeling good, I came out feeling like there was something wrong with my hair because of my hair "texture". The hairstylist made me feel extremely uncomfortable because she kept commenting on the texture of my hair. Even calling someone else to look at my hair. As if it was weird. I told her she was making me feel like there was something wrong with me. Being a Latina, our hair comes in all different forms and textures. I was in an emergency situation and the Altered Ego team came through for me! I had a formal banquet to attend and the stylist I'd hired had to cancel due to a sick child. I had a vintage pin-up look to achieve, with a fabulous red dress, funky pumps, and I needed a vintage hair style to pull it all together! The dress and shoes and jewelry just would not have looked right. My hair is pin-straight fine, and slippery, and there is no way I could have done anything with it without professional help. The Altered Ego Salon took me in with just a 1-day notice. I spoke with two stylists who, after looking at my vintage hair style inspiration photos, asked me to wait so that they could consult with another stylist who could do the kind of style I was looking for. I loved that all the stylists knew what was within, and wasn't within, their repertoire and were concerned with my satisfaction with the style. I ended up having three stylists. One that used lots of texturizing product and put large curls with a curling iron all over my hair. That was completely necessary, and another stylist with more experience actually came over to coach the stylist working on my hair on what the best texturizer would be and how to apply it to have the best hold for my kind of hair. Once my long, straight hair was completely curled, my angel of vintage hairstyles took over. I confess I don't remember her name, and when I come across her card again, I'll add it here, but it began with M and I think it had a "y" in it. She herself had often dressed in vintage fashion and styled her hair in vintage looks. She was an expert at adding volume near the base of my hair, added a top "Victory Roll," kept my high forehead from looking too high with positioning the Victory Roll just right, and worked the long curls of my hair to frame my face and look beautiful from all angles. All of that work cost just $60. That's amazingly inexpensive! I would have paid well over $100 in Atlanta for the same style! As I walked through the 300-person banquet and cocktail reception heads turned and many remarked on how I looked like an old time movie star. One gentleman said, "I didn't know Betty Grable was the star of this party!" The ladies were very complimentary about the vintage look and I am grateful to Maestro M, the sorceress of styles, who brought a perfect vintage look to my ensemble. Hairstylists will always do what they want to do l and/or what is easiest for them. You can ask for something and your best bet is to hope you get lucky. I ask for the same thing every time: number three fade, blended low, keep the fenders and the sideburns long, but it is basically a crap shoot. I've been here twice and once was a success the other was a bust, which is too high a fail rate for the price. And what steams me about the second cut is that in addition to being a different style than what I came in with and asked to have replicated, it is also poor technical cut with blends in the wrong spot, to high on the crown in some places and rather than dealing with a cowlick, just leaving it too full and too long. I cannot not recommend and have no intention of going back. read more

Charissa had a challenge I have extremely thick hair and she was doubled booked and still got me done in outstanding time! I don't understand how this place has such high ratings. I came in to thin my heavy hair out and clean up my layers. I had long beautiful hair prior to coming here and now my hair is at that awkward length when you cut it short and it's growing out. I can't see any layers at all and I asked for long layers keep the length. 2+ inches were chopped off. On top of that there was a girl training with the owner (lady who cut my hair) who was shadowing her. The hair dresser was stopping to explain everything to her. I just moved to AZ from CA and LOVED my stylist in Huntington Beach (Nicole's Hair Studio - in case you live in Cali)! I searched for a place to go in AZ and found Altered Ego Salon & Spa. I went for an appointment this week and my stylist was Tiffany Kinnear. First, the salon is so cute. Love the decor and it has an awesome barber shop and coffee shop attached! Really great environment. They offer all types of services as well (facials, nails, spray tan, hair extensions, etc.). While talking to Tiffany I found out the salon is family owned (her mother and sisters) and has been around for years. Really nice place! So my hair was dark dark color treated brown hair (almost black). She said the best route would be to do a balayage. She was very friendly, took her time, and educated me on what she was doing. The final results were beautiful!!! I am so happy with the color and how healthy and soft my hair feels. I will be trying some of their other services and already have my next appointment with Tiffany! I definitely recommend Tiffany and Altered Ego Salon & Spa! read more

you know it was three years since my last experience here. Let me tell you how the first visit actually went. I asked for a balayage, i specifically asked the highlights not start at my crown. i should have known sooner by where the foils were being placed that we were headed in the wrong direction but i gave the stylist the benefit of the doubt, i was told id see the owner the next day to address what went wrong. Instead i was escorted to the MENS section and maybe matt was his name? gave me a demi to cover it all up. obv the owner did not want to deal with this mistake, though i was told she would. so i peeped their instagram recently, saw they got the balayage down. I request a consult with the owner Tawni, who previously dismissed me, and show up 5 mins before my appt at 6. I see her fuddling with shelving products, maybe she doesnt know i know what she looks like and saw her. No-" Ill be right with you" nothing, no acknowlegment for my presescence whatsoever. ive had other stylists come out at other salons and say im running behind on a client are you ok to wait? and im like yea cool. Nope. No, i am invisible. 6:15 i go to reception and say thanks but no thanks. and leave. I have a newborn at home and i dont have time to diddle around. i dont know why i tried to give a second chance 3 years later. but lesson learned. read more

I, however, choose to throw that caution to the wind and say that this is one of the best salons I've ever been to. I love it. Friendly, friendly people. Having had terrible hair experiences, I'm always careful who I go to when I get a haircut. It had been about two years since my last trim and 5 years since I had gone to a salon to get it cut. I decided to give this salon a try because of the good yelp reviews. I called earlier that morning and was able to get an appointment for that same day with Tiffany. I showed her a photo of the bangs I wanted and told her to trim a few inches off but keep it long. She was very careful and took her time. I never felt like she was rushed. From my experiences I feel like when you ask to take off a few inches they end up cutting way too much, but that was not the case. She did a fantastic job and my hair turned out exactly how I wanted. The haircut plus shampoo and blow dry took an hour and was $36. Definitely coming back! read more
