This seamstress doesn't even deserve one star. I bought my Made with Love Rosey wedding gown from Vows and wanted some customization done. Violette was one of the three seamstresses recommended by the shop and so I assumed it would be excellent service. This was the worst seamstress experience I have ever had. Do not take your wedding dress here!!!! Her craftsmanship is sloppy and she left jagged edges and unfinished seems all over my dress. I ended up having 6 fittings the last three were supposed to be the last one but she just didn't finish. Violette did the alternations for my wedding dress. I was concerned mostly with quality of alternations, since my dress was pretty inexpensive as far as wedding dresses go. However, it needed some major alterations. It had to be brought down at least 2 sizes in the waste and hips, plus I needed halter straps added. (why so many strapless dresses?!?!) Violette had great recommendations so I went with her. When I dropped off the dress to her 4 months a head of time, she did the initial fitting and had measured for the halter straps. The dress had some beautiful details I was worried about (lace appliques along the one side, tulle wrap around and tulle over the dress part.) but when I came back (after only about 1.5 weeks), the dress fit beautifully and there were no obvious places where she made adjustments. I took it home and she said that I should come back a month before the wedding and we can check it again. The only tweak we ended up having to do after the initial fitting was that she had added halter straps that were white and the dress is off white (I didn't even notice myself until I had taken the dress outside after someone at Mens Warehouse had mentioned that in passing! Indoors it looks like an exact match!) I brought it back and she remade custom straps within a week. It was an easy mistake that was easily changed, and in fact, the second strap she made was even better than the first! She told me that if I lost any more weight before the wedding to bring it back and she would make more adjustments... even up to the week of the wedding. It wasn't necessary btu I felt good knowing that she was quick and wanted to make me happy. I wore that dress for a solid 10 hours and was totally comfortable the ENTIRE time. Needless to say I was nervous about handing my wedding dress over to a complete stranger, but Violette was so kind and did an amazing job!! My dress is a larger ball gown with a three foot train. She charged a very good rate for the hours of work she put in. I called her in May to schedule my first round of fittings. I had three total fittings, about a month apart from each one. Violette was suggested to me by a friend, as she does the alterations at Camilla's in Arlington. I bought my dress at the Filene's Basement event, so the dress didn't come with any inhouse seamstress. I called Violette to set up an appointment, and she was really nice. She even offered to come to me if I didn't want to travel to her place. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling well on Monday when I was scheduled to see her. No problem by her and we rescheduled for two weeks from now (which gives me that more time to try to drop a couple pounds). The rate she quoted me seemed really reasonable, which I appreciate as my dress isn't that complex (no beads, lace, etc). She also said turnaround would be about two weeks, which is nice as it still gives me time without stressing too much. Violette was able to alter the top part of my lace wedding dress, sew in cups, and make a beautiful bustle for an affordable price. She knew what she was doing and you can't even tell it was altered. I first found Violette a year ago while googling seamstresses in Boston. Granted I didn't need the gown until Sept of this year, I needed it much earlier so that I could do my bridals. I gave her a call & asked for a quote. However, she wasn't able to give me one of the phone so she stopped by the next day for a consultation. Although a little pricey compared to some of the other seamstresses I found, she did a great job in the bustlework. Negative 1 star for taking off too much crinoline & making it uneven (but hardly noticeable by anyone but me) when she hemmed the gown. She dropped the gown off a week later, no muss, no fuss. She even pressed it for me! Flash forward to August of 2009. I frantically called her because I noticed that the numbers on the bustle had rubbed off when I cleaned it after the bridals. Violette invited me to her home & re did the work for me as well as re-pressed it. She even offered to store my gown in her basement until the actual wedding! She's very sweet, kind & caring. By the time the dress arrived, it was about 4 weeks before my wedding. I called around to various Boston seamstresses who informed me that I was an "emergency" case given the timing of my wedding. I thought that was pretty high drama (and I am not high drama). I called Violette who was able to schedule me for the next day with no drama whatsoever. And I am so, so glad that I went to her. She has done a fantastic job with my dress -- I wanted it less poofy and the dress now looks perfect! And Violette is lovely person who is a delight to work with. Violette's prices are also very, very reasonable. I did not shop around based on price but I was perfectly happy with the price that Violette quoted me (particularly, given the the four fitting that I eventually had -- it was the dress, not Violette!). If I could give 0 stars I would. I am sitting in my car after picking up my hack-job hem. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE FOR BRIDAL ALTERATIONS. I brought my lace gown to be hemmed shorter to accommodate going barefoot (outdoor wedding) and called as a last minute to see if she could 2 weeks before (I know this is a crazy request). She took me and said she would do it. Told me on the phone "i'm sure everyone else told you no but I can't say no to the bride" and we laughed about it. I go, she says she can do it it in the allotted time. Fast forward to today, she only takes cash so I call ahead to make sure I withdraw the correct amount. I told her my name and SHE COULD NOT FIND MY DRESS. I had to send her a picture of it over text message and she said she found a slip with a "Danielle" for the name. I said that is not my name and then she asked how much I originally was charged. I could not remember the exact number and gave a ballpark to which she told me $600. I knew it was not that much but all of the red flags aside, I needed my wedding dress. I go to pick up and she jokes asking if "I was scared" that she forgot my dress as she is grabbing THE WRONG DRESS. I tell her that it is the wrong one and she goes through all of the dresses on the rack only to turn around to the rack of dresses that she was still working on. I point to the bag that I recognize and she grabs my slip. She never even started my dress. At this point I am about to cry because I am on my way to leave for my wedding this weekend. She tells me that it will take "1 hour, maybe more". After 40 minutes she calls and says she is done. She clearly took a million shortcuts to make it work, the strap which she shortened is about to rip. The lace hem was slapped together with obvious stitching. To really drive it home she still wanted her $450 (original cost) and would not hand me my dress until I paid her. I gave her $440 and she joked that she "didn't need any more". My wife and I purchased our wedding gowns from a retailer in RI who does not provide alterations. She did have a list of several tailors that her other clients had used and recommended. Violette was on that list, she was close to my house so I thought lets do this. First off she works out of her home so she sees clients in the evenings. I was always able to get a convenient time with her and she got our dresses done very quickly. Ultimately I ended up having 4 fittings (I'm short, and the dress had a long train) to get the length just right. She did a beautiful bustle for me and was able to keep the detail I would have lost in the long train. She was very easy to work with and always very friendly. My dress also had a corset in the back with she taught my mom how to do up on the big day. She's not inexpensive but I don't think she's really over priced either. Bottom line is that even if you spend 50 or 100 more going to her- its worth it because it will be done right and and on time. When it comes to wedding dresses that is super important. She was *extremely* patient with me, she did a beautiful job. I have an very complicated wedding dress- silk sheath with a complete separate outer lace sheath that is embroidered, beaded, tiny crystals etc. I was afraid of the hemming but she did a beautiful job. When I went to pick up my dress for the last time, she invited me for Turkish coffee (YUM) and little cookies in her parlor since I was picking it up early in the morning. She told me stories of her life, surrounded by other girls' dresses hanging here and there in various stages of alteration, and I could feel her genuine warmth and passion for what she did in the way she spoke of her life and work. I found Violette on google. I contacted her through her website with a prompt response to set up a consultation. I took my dress to her and explained what I needed. The bodice needed to be taken in and a bustle added. The first fitting went well- bustle was a little crooked and the bodice was a snug- gave me a little back fat. She said she would fix it right away. Two weeks later I was back and everything fit perfect. Total was reasonable, compared to what I've heard is spent on bridal alterations. I spent $350 on a 14 strand bustle and 2 alterations to bodice on a organza rouched gown. She even said she would alter again if anything changed. I would highly recommend Violette. As other reviewers have stated, Violette is so sweet and nice. When looking for someone to do alterations, I was encouraged reading the other reviews. My dress is beaded, and was slightly big, so I wanted someone talented and experienced for the job to bring it in and not ruin the detailing. Unfortunately, I don't feel that is what I got. I'll start with the positives. She added a bustle, which I thought looked good, she lifted the dress so it doesn't hang on me anymore, she tightened the loops on the back so that my buttons wouldn't pop open, and she fixed the sleeves to be more flattering (though the beaded detailing ended up being a bit clumped together). I will say, all this was done fairly well, and would have received 4/5 stars. Now for the negative. My dress is a sheath dress with a beaded tulle overlay, so in my opinion a tricky dress to work on. Violette started by taking in the top, which it needed, but she didn't do much to bring in the waist or the hips of the dress. When I pointed out I would like it to be a little more fitted so that it would go in at the waist, she brushed me off and said it was fine. I should have pushed more, but I figured she knew more than I did. She also brought up the overlay to shorten the dress, which she insisted on doing even though I told her I thought it was a good length. However, again, since she's the expert, I went with her suggestion. Unfortunately, the result was that a beading pattern that extended from the top to the bottom of the skirt ended up being misaligned, which I feel is a detail that shouldn't be missed by an experienced alterations specialist. Also, much of the stitching that was done over the beading was haphazard and clearly visible when you inspect closely (which I realize no one will do at my wedding, but it still bothers me). It looked like something I would do in a hasty attempt to stitch something together quickly. In addition, there was a beaded trim all along the top of the dress around the back, and for some reason, pieces of it were removed and never added back. To give her the benefit of the doubt, she may have meant to add them back and forgotten (though it's unclear why they were removed in the first place), but I was too frustrated to go back to her and have her fix it. In the end, upon receiving my dress, I was four weeks away from my wedding and had a dress that wasn't the most flattering fit and overall looked worse than when I brought it in. Fortunately, I found another tailor who could make some fixes on short notice, and they, without my prompting, thought the dress was too short and that it needed to be taken in more around the waist and hips (probably a good 3+ inches). They also, among other things, re-aligned the beading pattern on the skirt and fixed the beaded trim around the top. The dress now fits me beautifully, and is much more flattering than when I got it back from Violette. My advice would be if you want to bring a wedding dress here, pay attention to the details, because I don't think she does that very well. Go over the dress with a fine tooth comb before leaving her place to make sure there isn't anything there you will later find you're dissatisfied with (something I wish I had done). And she may do well on a dress without a lot of beading or detailing; as I mentioned before, she did a decent job on basic alterations to the dress. I just think will all of the beading, my dress is a particularly difficult one to alter. read more

I recently had a bridesmaid's dress altered by Violette. She is very nice and was very kind to me; however, i was very dissatisfied with her services. I came to see her about a month before I needed the dress for the wedding and I have larger breasts so i needed the dressed to be altered to hide my strapless bra but not be too tight. She said she would do it with plenty of time to spare. I came in when she said the dress was ready (about 2 weeks before the wedding) and it was WAY too tight on the breasts so she said she would alter it again. I waited another week and went in then tried on the dress and it was still too tight. She is incredibly kind, patient and was able to turn around two wedding dresses (a ball gown and sheath gown) in less than a month's time when other seamstresses wouldn't even give me an appointment. She went above and beyond for us - when the zipper of my ball gown broke during our final fitting, she replaced the zipper on the spot (at no additional cost), and graciously said "thank goodness this didn't happen on your wedding day!". I cannot recommend Violette enough. She did an amazing job on my wedding dress. She was sooooo patient with me as I was indecisive over so many things. I wanted to add straps to my dress, which turned out to be harder than I thought since my dress was lace and I wasn't hemming it at all. She went out of her way to make me TWO separate pairs of straps, and they turned out great. She was also such a pleasure to work with. She is such a sweet lady and making appointments is super easy. She works out of her house so she could always do evening appointments, which is a huge help if you work full time. Also, it was a lump sum for everything she did, which was fantastic. My dress has an unconventional high-low length, and I'm 4'11", so she made sure the new length was adjusted proportionately. I felt beautiful in my dress. This is a tough one to rate. I called Violette because of the great Yelp reviews, so I feel obligated to rate myself. I brought an expensive evening dress to be altered (hem and shorten straps). I also knew that I would need my wedding dress altered later in the month and figured the evening dress would be a good way to try her out before giving her such an important dress. What makes me feel bad about the 2 star rating: Violette is incredibly sweet. She made me a same day appointment and was very warm when I arrived at the house and descended into the basement where she does her consults (don't expect a pretty alterations shop). She really undercharged me for the work too. Would I want to have tea with her? Yes. Give her another dress of mine to alter? Probably not. Why this is a 2 star rating: the alterations work was very disappointing. When I went back to pick up the dress the hem was extremely uneven (hung about 4 inches in the front compared to the back). She also had not done the straps (they were still pinned). I pointed both of these things out (she didn't say anything about it first) and took the dress off. She took the dress and tried to fix the hem and did do the straps while I waited. The changes made it better (no longer a 4 inch length difference front to back, but still a noticeable one) so I paid and took the dress because I was not convinced that leaving it with her longer would result in a better outcome. I ended up having to bring the dress elsewhere for alterations to even out the hem. She undercharged.... but I ended up overpaying since I had to pay a second time for another place to make the hem even all the way around. Giving her the benefit of the doubt (she was SO NICE): her bread and butter is definitely wedding dresses (there were a lot of them hanging in her basement). My evening dress was probably not a priority at the start of wedding season. She also claimed the fabric of my dress was difficult to work (it was a silk chiffon). This may be true for the machine(s) she uses, but the second place I brought it to was not phased by the fabric and made it look like a professional hem. Use caution here. She has night appointments and is a good communicator but the alterations work apparently is hit or miss. Wedding dresses might be her thing, but I decided not to bring mine here (and I am so glad that I did this 'alterations trial' first). read more

I just got my dress back last night from Violette. She did an amazing job! It only took my initial consultation for her to figure out exactly what needed to be altered and how much she needed to take it in. When I came for my next fitting (last night- a month and one week after my initial fitting) it fit perfectly and she had even added breast cups to the dress for me (which I desperately need) without me having to ask. I took a skirt to Violette to hem and the experience was a complete disaster. I had bought the skirt at a small boutique several years ago and I loved the print and crepe-like fabric and bias cut but the length was too long to be fashionable. The skirt was also reversible with two fabrics I loved so it would mean hemming each of the reversible sides. Not a big job for anyone with a sewing machine right? So when I dropped the skirt off I said I wanted it hemmed and explained that the skirt was reversible (hard not to notice that but I made sure to point it out because it makes a difference how the hemming is done) and we determined the length and cost and when I could come back for it. Boy, was I shocked when I returned! Instead of hemming the skirt she had cut off the top elastic waistband and then had turned the fabric over so that the wrong side was showing on one of the reversible sides. AND the edge was raw! Huh?! The skirt was trashed. Truly. And she didn't even apologize. I pointed out that this was not going to work and had to explain why and she said she would try to fix it. Frankly I didn't see how this was going to be fixable but I agreed. When I came back it was even worse. She was away on vacation but her daughter showed it to me. Now the top waistband had the wrong fabric on each side! Also, the skirt had fit fine before at the waist and hips but because she had cut off the waist and it was a-line now it was too wide and it looked like crap. I told her to have her mom call me when she returned but she never did. I don't know how someone who calls herself a tailor could make such a mistake. And again, no apology or offer to try to make it right. Terrible experience. Beware. read more

Her message said, "You can go to any dry cleaner" to get my wedding dress pressed. Guess what? I called three and none of them can do it. I spent $200 with her on the most minor alterations, and she promised me she would give the dress one more pressing before my big day - which happens to be tomorrow. While she did a fine job on the alterations, and she was very pleasant to work with, I think her behavior today is unconscionable. Definitely not worth $100 for the (very simple) bustle that was added to my wedding dress. The bustle had very flimsy straps with faint handwritten numbers on them, and after the dress was bustled it was lopsided and still dragged on the ground on one side. if you're looking for personalized service and someone who will take the time to do it right, I'm sorry to say that you should give this place a skip...When I came back for a fitting, she spent all of five minutes with me, and even though I pointed out the bustle still dragged on the ground on one side she simply said no one would notice. Violette is an absolute sweetheart and incredibly talented. My wedding dress came out beautiful and fits like a glove! Somehow she just knows your measurements without ever actually measuring. She's brilliant. My dress was purchased off a used dress website, brought it to her based off reviews on Yelp. She took up the hem, removed a belt attached on tulle, expanded the bust, adjusted the buttons and zipper, and added a bustle. So much work done within two weeks. She's a magician. read more
