In the last 6 months I received some gold jewelry from my family and needed to get them resized or needed pieces to go along with them. I went to a jewelry shop in South Pasadena and didn't really like the interaction I had with their staff. They weren't rude, but it felt like I was just a number and that some of the things I brought in weren't big enough to work on. I stumbled upon Altadena Watch randomly and went into their store to see if they they could fix some jewelry I had. Vic and his wife Caroline were always so nice and friendly. I've been to Altadena Watch twice now, both times were great. The owner is helpful, knowledgable and very quick to find a way to help the customer. I had purchased a watch band about a year earlier. The pin holding the band to the watch face had come out, twice. The second time I did not try and put it back in myself, so to Altadena Watch I went. Vic recognized me or better, recognized his work. Immediately set out to replace the pin and handed it back to me. I asked "How much?" "No charge" "No, really...how..." He waived me off. I had a screw fall out of the arm of my glasses. Thankfully, I had a backup pair. I checked the website and it said 'eyeglass repair'. We walked in, the store was clean and organized and Vic was behind the counter. He took less than five minutes to put the screw back in, even said how he did the repair and didn't charge me. Didn't CHARGE ME! You read that right! This felt like a family business that actually cares about the work they do and the people they help. It's seldom you find a true artisan these days. Someone who takes pride in their craft, and is committed to excellence. I've been extremely happy with Altadena Watch and Jewelry Company. They're super-close to my home, which has been a lovely and convenient bonus. Vic is a terrific technician, and is always welcoming~ UNLESS you happen to catch him on a bad day. When a shop owner's personality so volatile that he hurls character assassinations at an established, polite and cordial customer, it feels pretty shocking. I've always been fastidious about keeping my belongings in pristine condition, so when I picked up one of my favorite clocks at his store that needed the movement replaced, I was surprised to notice a couple of scratches on the casing. I asked if they could be buffed out, and was told it wasn't possible. Vic apparently felt insulted I'd even suggested these marks weren't there when I left clock for service. He shouted at me, saying that I'd "wanted the work done for free," made his son Shawn refund the charge for service AGAINST my protestations, ordered me out of his store and commanded that I never return! To say this was an overreaction, is putting it mildly. All this occurred while I kept stating how much I valued him and his work~ in fact, I'd just recently sent a Thank You note expressing my deep appreciation for this man's expert craftsmanship! Upset over this conflict, I brought my clock back home and noted with surprise, its glass face was badly smudged. Who sends a customer's clock home this way?? I cleaned the glass and casing with Windex, which helped restore it to its original glory. On the flip side of my respect for Vic's skill, I believe that how we do Anything, is how we do Everything~ and I can't help but sense his rageful outburst with me, ISN'T just an anomaly. read more

I purchased a watch from here as well and they have helped me maintain it and all of my other watches so well. I took a ring in there once with tiny diamonds - a diamond fell out and Vic advised that I not replace it because the gold was too soft and eventually the ring would lose another diamond. This guy is an idiot. I brought in a watch for a simple battery replacement. He fiddled with it for a few minutes and then told me to come back in a couple hours. I figured he had a job that was more pressing so I said okay. When I returned he said that he couldn't get the back of the watch off and returned it to me. There are four screws holding the back on. What kind of watch repair professional cannot remove four screws. Not rocket science. I took it elsewhere and had it done in less than 20 minutes. No idea what his problem is, but he lost good business from me as I have some older watches that need servicing. I will be taking them to the guy that knows how to open a watch. read more

I was looking for jewelry repair recommendations in an Altadena Facebook group and Vic's name came up more than a few times. I had to check it out for myself. WOW! As soon as I walked in the door you could see that he prides himself on customer relationships. There were 2 others in the place and it felt like they were regulars, but it turns out it was their first time there too. He was so kind and polite. I needed to have my engagement ring stone tightened and my wedding band had a crack in it. He offered to repair it and clean it in under an hour. I wasn't in a rush, so I came back the next day to get it. It's stunning. Hasn't looked this good since I got it 11 years ago! I had forgotten that customer service could be like this. Altadena Watch and Jewelry came up, and had a good rating---which turns out, is well deserved. Brought in my broken chains at 9:45 am (note: their hours showed they open at 10:00 am, but the super pleasant man working said he was there, so he opened! What a novel idea). Great service, fast, and friendly I came here one morning to get my watch band replaced. I brought my own watch band so all I needed was someone with the tools to do it. I arrived 5 minutes before their listed opening time, but the door was already open and the open sign was on, so I went in. The guy came out and helped me right away. I was charge $15 to replace the watch band. I needed 2 links removed which cost an additional $8. Total, after tax and everything I walked out after paying a little over $24. The total process took about 5 minutes. I am very happy with the service, but I think its very expensive for what was being done. I had already removed half of the old band, but the pin on the other side was damaged and I didn't have the right tools to remove it. So I paid $15 to get 1 pin removed, and then slide the new watch band in. I then paid $8 to remove 2 pins and pull out those links, I would have done that myself at home, I just didn't have the time, so I paid for the service. read more

This man is the real deal, I took in 6 broken necklaces that needed new clasps, re-drilling of clasps, some welding, and new loops. Needless to say I thought my fake jewelry was a pile of trash! Until I walked into his shop. This man took care of every single one of my 6 necklaces for the teeny tiny total price of $10. This is STILL the best place to go for your jewelry and/or key fob needs! I brought my mom's fob in for a replacement battery a few weeks ago and haven't had a chance to update my review. Since I didn't have her car with me, he tested the battery itself and determined it does not need replacing. He cleaned out the contact area for me instead. It worked! No need to buy a new battery!!
