I feel like I'm at a grocery store, when shopping here; NOT at a sporting goods store.

Andrew helped me rent skis in the rental shop. I was running late after seeing my movie and arrived 2 minutes before closing. I offered to come back the next morning but he offered to help me anyway. He was cheerful and very kind. The skis he rented me were perfect! This kind of service is hard to find, especially with a great attitude. Al's is lucky to have such a dynamic employee. I ordered a climbing harness through their online store, and when I received it, there was still a security tag attached to it. Because the tag was pinned through one of the straps on the harness, I decided to return it, rather than figure out how to get the tag off. Given that this is a critical piece of safety equipment, you'd think they'd know not to compromise its integrity by punching holes through the straps. I emailed customer service to get a return authorization code, and they responded with a .doc file containing incredibly blurry photographs of how to remove the tag myself, which means this must happen often enough that they have a document already prepared. That's evidence enough for me to not trust them for anything that I'd want to depend on for personal safety; if they didn't leave the tag on, I probably wouldn't have noticed that the strap was damaged. read more

Thanksgiving night, I sat down outside of Al's at 6:30pm. I was particularly excited because recently Al's advertised that they will beat any price on any identical in stock item. I sat waiting for a Ruger 10/22. Walmart had this gun in stock priced at $234 with a 20% discount; bringing the price down to $187.20 Al's advertisement stated they would beat any competitor's price. I had stopped into Al's once to confirm they would indeed match the price and called in twice to do the same. The owner of the store was called to the register to confirm that they could match the ad and very quickly became upset at the request. He asked multiple times if they had the gun in stock. I replied, "They did at 6 am this morning." He abruptly ended the conversation and said, "Our price is $199. Would you like the gun?" I told him I was very upset at this and he then said, "If you can go get printed proof that they have this gun in stock, I will match their price." I asked if he would accept a phone call to the Walmart gun counter as confirmation. He said no, so I once more asked if I came back with printed proof of a stocked item if he would match the price, and he said yes. I then went to Walmart and acquired an inventory list of their in stock guns. It included two Ruger 10/22's. The manager then wrote down all the sale information, his direct number, and signed the inventory list. I returned to Al's with this paper in hand. I stood near the register to gain the owner's attention. When he spotted me, he threw his hands in the air and told me he would not accept whatever it was I had in my hand. He had called Walmart and talked to Joyce, and she confirmed that they did not have any in stock. I asked if he would just look at the paper and told him that it had a manager's number for him to call. He said, "I don't care who gave you the paper and who signed it. Our price is $199. Would you like this other stuff you have here?" I said no thanks. He lost a very loyal customer. I returned to Walmart to purchase the guns. I asked if Joyce was there to set it straight. There were no employees named Joyce in the store. Not only was he rude but he lied. I will gladly support the local guy over the big corporation, but I will now take all my sporting good business elsewhere. read more

The cashier did everything she could, but their return policy is just awful. I bought a scope from them that broke in a week after the first use and they won't let me refund or return it all because it had been used 1 time.. and are instead requiring me to wait a month or two so they can ship it to the manufacturer and maybe (not even a guarantee) get it exchanged or refunded. So that's some money I'll never see again and a useless and defective scope that won't get me very far. At least I know not to buy from them again. read more

I really want to like Al's, but their customer service is so bad! It seems like everytime I go in there I wait around for someone to help me, and then just get frustrated and leave. This is especially true if you need help in either the footwear or climbing sections of the store. read more

I normally love shopping at Als my husband and I come in often, at least once a week. I love it and is a great place to shop other than today is the most uncomfortable I have ever felt in a place of business. To the girls working the shoe section today pulling out shipment, making fun of me laughing and staring.... women like you are the reason people have issues. If I was your boss I would be very upset having you treat my customers that way and literally only footsteps away. People like you that are so insecure and have to talk about other people, is very sad and I hope one day you love yourself enough to leave others out of your personal trauma. Disgusted that you would ever feel you had the right to talk about anyone in such a rude manner. I felt so uncomfortable someone could be that way and just had to leave. Normally a good place to shop, still is.... just needs better manners towards the people keeping them a steady job. read more

Very confusing it seems as if half the employees wear uniforms and the other half don't, just makes it awkward when trying to figure out who to ask for help. Then after asking the lady helping me showed me about 3 different jackets then just started talking to another lady wearing casual cloth. I then went to another area of the store to look for jackets and decided to ask someone else for help this lady immediately took me to the highest priced clothing and when I asked her if there's anything cheaper she said she didn't believe so. I then walked around for 3 more min and found something for half the price of what she was showing me. Then after I had bought the cloth and realized how over priced they were I tried to get a return on a pair of gloves one of the employees basically forced me to buy and the manager was called he then basically told me he won't give me a return since the gloves seemed to have been used. I'm not sure how he got this idea since they were tried on once when I got home to see how they looked with the rest of my gear and then put into the bag. Unbelievably terrible service and pricing, wouldn't recommend this to anyone, would almost be easier to buy from amazon and just return till you find what you like than to come to Al's. read more

I drew a muzzle loader deer tag for this fall. I sold mine a few years ago so I thought I'd stop at Al's and see what they had. I was looking at the guns when the gun department manager stopped to talk to me. I've known him for years. He made a comment about not having my wife with me. I told him we were divorced. He said "that's good , you're better off without her" or words to that effect. I thought I had misunderstood him. So I asked him what he meant by that. He said he thought she was to bossy and I was better off being divorced. I told him I didn't appreciate that kind of comments. Who the hell does this guy think he is coming off with those kind of comments. On the way out I talked to Chris the store owner and told him what the other guy said. He said he'd talk to to him about it but I doubt he does. Probably said that just to pacify me. I told Chris that I knew I wasn't their biggest customer but I'd never do business there again. After leaving I tried counting how many guns I had bought there. I come up with 12-15 in the last 20 years or so. I still can't believe that the gun manager would say something like that to a customer. They've lost my business. read more

Some of the staff is helpful others not so much. The real problem is the management and owners. After watching the owners make an employee pay for a bike that had been damaged during shipping is unfair. The stunts they pull to try and make a dollar is unethical in my option. I was helped by a middle aged woman who I found out was the store manager. (Mary?) She was friendly and answered my many questions because I like to be thorough before a large purchase. After she finished helping me we went separate ways and I continued to browse through the store. It wasn't long until I turned a corner and saw that woman telling another employee how "clueless" a customer she had helped was and then quoted a question I had asked! Thankfully I wasn't seen! I have never been so embarrassed or offended. I will never be returning to Al's Sporting Goods and you bet every time I hear Al's this story will come out. I am completely disappointed with this store and its customer service. I stopped in today to purchase a couple things and your sale's associates REQUIRED that I take my items out in a plastic bag. I politely refused but in the end I was disrespected and had to walk out with a plastic bag because it is your policy that every purchase goes out with a plastic bag. I am surprised that an outdoor company like yourself does not support individuals looking to waste less and use fewer plastic bags. Ok so probably growing pains, visited the new Al's. Purchased a new children's bicycle. I had to break into the flirtatious "staff meeting" at the counter after standing and watching 5 feet away with my daughter for what seemed like 5 mins. Then I received blank stares as I asked if someone could help get the bicycle my daughter and I had selected without assistance off the rack. If I hadn't traveled to pick up the bicycle I would have left without making the purchase. The store was empty 2:00 in the afternoon. Bummer I had high hopes for the new store. read more

BEWARE OF ALS SPORTING GOODS. THEY DON'T STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE WHEN THEY SEND DEFECTIVE ITEM. These boots are defective and not "as described" on the website. The size/width chart provided doesn't match with the narrow boots I received. no width is provided on tag or box yet list many different widths on the item description/size chart. I can't even get my foot inside. Very misleading and DISHONEST!! STAY AWAY! They now want me to pay shipping back to them for these heavy boots that are of no use due to the defects. read more

I ordered and paid for online pair of skis from Al's because they assured me I could have them by a certain date. A day later I received a call telling me that they did not have the skis in stock. As a result I lost a day in which I could have gotten the ski elsewhere in time for a planned trip. read more

They said they sell Birkenstock. I went there they had one pair my size but would love to special order them for me. It was the mother of all shoe sales- they have a sale every week. I asked the girl how much their Birkenstock atrizonas were 135.00 - 20% I said that's still 110.00 which I knew was way to much. I went home promptly ordered them off amazon 89.00 no sales tax saving 30.00 all together, saving on the shoes and tax I don't like Al's they think they own the market but they don't go to amazon and buy stuff - it's cheaper by a long way!!! read more

I went in with my family to purchase a bike for myself and my son. John greeted us when we came in the cycling department and immediately guided us to the the style of bike we were after. It was obvious that John knew what he was talking about, and he seemed to be quite the avid rider himself, but at no point did we feel like he was condescending or trying to show off his knowledge. He was extremely down to earth. We explained our price range for what we were looking for and he respected our need to stay in those boundaries, at no point did I feel like he was upselling us. Our cashier was lovely as well, and John helped us bring the bikes to our car, which was great. I would recommend this bike shop to anyone and everyone in Cache Valley, the selection is fantastic, and if the employees are similar to the ones who helped us then they are fantastic as well. We are completely satisfied with our experience. I have since edited this, still loved the employees, just a bit disappointed in the helmet I bought along with the bike. The closure system in the back has already broken. I may have twisted too hard, but not hard enough to break it, in my opinion. read more

After a week I called and was promised it would ship the next day priority mail. A week later I still had not received the package. Al's has asked their employees before to leave positive reviews on sites such as Google+. One of the reviews on Yelp is from an employee of Al's, and possibly more are, I don't know. Just take that into consideration as you read the reviews. Al's is not a bad store though and stocks some of the highest quality gear you can buy. I'm just not a fan of them soliciting employees to leave positive reviews because it skews the overall real customer review rating. read more

Purchased a treadmill from them. Had to go to a different building to pick it up, and had to wait for associate to stop texting on his cell phone, associate did not acknowledge or thank us- in fact- it came across like he was doing us a favor to come over from the store and load it in our vehicle. Could have purchased it from Sports Authority for $5 more and it would have been worth it as they are always friendly- usually no one even says hi when you go into Al's. read more

Customer service is HORRIBLE!!!! I bought some snow pants and they ripped not even 12 hours later, when returning them they said they have to do an "investigation" to make sure it was the manufacturers defect. Waited 4 weeks later to hear from them about what they were going to do and they said it's not there fault but they will give me the ripped pants back and a discount on a new pair if I want. I asked what kind of discount and they said that all their winter wear is 50% off right now so they can't give me a better deal then that. Doesn't make sense to me when you say we'll give you a deal it should be additional to the 50% of sale items. All in all I won't shop at Al's again. read more

I really like spending time at Al's and have bought a handful of guns from them. My wife wanted to buy me one for Valentines day and went in to talk to them already knowing the make/model and price etc. She ended up getting taken advantage of and was over charged, which was very disappointing for me. It wasn't highway robbery, but it certainly wasn't good customer service. When I went in to discuss it there was no effort made by Al's to rectify it. Other than that I've mostly found the staff to be friendly and willing to help and I still shop there, but my opinion has definitely soured on this place. read more

I have done a lot of business at Al's over the years, and have always had positive experiences. Consequently, they really had to go above and beyond to surpass themselves in my estimation. That is exactly what happened yesterday. My wife and I stopped in to buy a couple of small items and noticed that they were having a large tent sale. We decided to browse around, and discovered a large 2 person sea kayak marked at a very low price. We decided to buy it along with a single for our son. I ran back home to get the truck, while my wife stayed behind and asked some questions of the staff. It soon became clear that the tandem kayak had been mismarked, as the price was much, much lower than any online price we were able to find. turns out it was inadvertently marked well below even their cost. They explained that there was no way they could give it to use for the marked price, but offered to give us both Kayaks for $50 below their cost. Plus they discounted all of the other items that we bought that day beyond the already reasonable sale price. We understand that things like that happen, and did not really expect them to do anything heroic for us. We were super impressed, and assure you that Al's has earned our loyalty. read more
