I live by a lot of four and five star restaurants where I live and I am spoiled! I was in Rockford for a week and I wanted to eat at a non chain restaurant. We went to the Alpine View Restaurant. Not only did we feast on tasty dishes we were treated like dignitaries. It was so good we went there for THREE dinners! They probably thought we were nuts, oh well! We came for the daily specials and some of the best homemade soup in Illinois! We tried the Ruben soup, which was creamy yummy soup with tender chunks of tasty corned beef. The broccoli and cheddar soup is the best in Illinois! It's creamy cheesy broth, pairing well with the tender broccoli bits. So yummy! We had the cabbage and corned beef; a huge plates of goodness. The fried catfish was delicious; great crust and portions were huge. The pork chop dinner with two perfectly cooked pork chops and applesauce was a home run! They were tender and so juicy! Kudos to the chef. The waitstaff were five star caliber and should be working in a five star restaurant in Chicago. Cecilia and Alli took care of us during the three dinners. They were friendly, polite, knowledgeable of the menu. They were prompt and anticipated our needs before we asked. They were excellent! A shot out to Staci who always welcomed us. I hate leaving bad reviews but the breakfast experience today was poor. I got the thick French toast with a side of crispy bacon. The French Toast had zero flavor. Tasted like bread. No vanilla, no cinnamon or anything. My fiancé got pancakes with a side of bacon. The pancakes were decent, nothing spectacular. Both of our sides of bacon did come out crispy like we ordered but both sides of bacon were covered in little fuzz. It wasn't human hair it was more like fuzz of some kind. My dad got the lumberjack special. The eggs were cooked exactly like he ordered but the sausage is super low quality. Not to knock Aldi, but the sausage tasted exactly like the yellow box you get from Aldi. Needless to say we won't be back. read more

Waitress was nice, food was subpar I asked for the burger to be medium, it came out over well done burnt and brittle. Grilled onions were saturated in water making the bun soggy. My wife ordered a patty melt also medium. Super well done and extremely dry. Just because it's on an open flame, doesn't mean to make it as black as charcoals. read more

It had been a while since I ate here. My girlfriend and I decided to go because she hadn't been and I had a hankering for Country Fried Steak and Eggs. If you follow my reviews of late you'll see that I am tending to order that for breakfast a lot... Because I'm looking for what I consider the best. We were promptly greeted and show to a table. We arrived at the perfect time. We went Sunday morning, but were able to get there before the church crowd got out. When we left there were people waiting to be seated. The hostess and our waitress were friendly. The waitress was attentive. I ordered the Steak and Eggs, despite my previous experience with it. Honestly, they improved on the gravy since the last time and it was much better than some I've had of late. The steak itself was breaded and cooked just right. It came with hash browns that where what one expects from a family restaurant. Nothing to be impressed about. I like my eggs over easy, they were a bit more over medium, but I wouldn't complain about that. My girlfriend had Bacon and Eggs with hash browns. She said it's what one would come to expect from a family restaurant. Nothing to brag about. Overall it's a decent place to stop and get breakfast. It does seem to cater to the retirement crowd, as when we were there that's who most of the customers were. However I would recommend avoiding the Sunday morning post church rush. read more

Stopped in while traveling through town and had breakfast with the family. They were able to seat all 5 of us together. We were seated right away and our waitress came out not long after. She was nice but you could tell it was still early for her. The restaurant is a little run but they make it work. The food came out pretty quickly. It was just ok food. Nothing really to write home about. If you decided to go to a different breakfast restaurant you wouldn't be missing anything. read more

Family-owned, very friendly staff, always clean if not a little dated, and excellent food quality and quantity. Always busy on weekends, yet always a short wait even then. Great specials listed daily on the board up front. Waitstaff is extremely helpful and sweet, we're regulars to the point that many of the girls - and the owners - know us by name. When we go on Sunday mornings we see many of the same people every week enjoying breakfast, and many large family gatherings as well. It was a bad experience today and it totally changed my review rating. When we received our check, we noticed we were charged for an extra cup of coffee I didn't have. The cashier went to get our waitress, (Michelle K) who told us that because she saw me taking a drink of my husband's coffee....(actually it was a sip to see if I wanted a cup) she stated she was told by the owners she must charge me, even if it is a sip. She said it wasn't her idea, but she had to do what the owners told her. I asked why she didn't tell us up front: "Hey I saw you drinking from your husband's cup, I'll have to charge you for two cups, so why don't you just have a cup anyway." We asked why is it now we see this when we go to pay? I asked why didn't you tell us before, not when we wanted to pay, she said it was "too late" (?) She never even pointed it out when she delivered the bill. In my opinion that was pretty shady, probably hoping we wouldn't notice. I perfectly understand people can take advantage of the 'free refills and there must be rules. We would have gladly paid extra. There would have been no reason to be sneaky and try to scam a cup of coffee. I usually order a pop, but not today. Speaking of coffee, my husband got his coffee from the man who seated us at 12:35, the next refill was 30 mins. later, it was ok because we weren't in a hurry for anything. The other so called refills were only top offs. We left at 2:15pm. We discussed how early on how the waitress didn't seem to want to wait on us anyway, she wasn't nice by her facial expressions when we asked questions and it just felt like we were putting her out. (Most of the help has been very accommodating.) Yet all she had to do was be up front and say something while we were dining. We frequented this place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner spending at least $28-33.++ each time and always give a 20-25% gratuity. We come in between two and 6 times per month, sometimes more, sometimes we bring family, but not after today. This unfortunate situation could have be dealt with so much better. I hope if other customers are caught taking a sip, they will be informed before they pay their bill. We will not be returning. read more

Average, average, average. Stopped in for a quick lunch and ordered a cheeseburger and fries. Just a plain burger and typical fries, nothing outstanding. Nothing to draw me back. They did have an extensive menu, but that makes me a little nervous when a restaurant has everything from sushi to Italian. We stopped in on a Sunday morning before heading home. We had called ahead so our table was waiting. Food & service were excellent!

I haven't had the chance to dine in here yet due to covid restrictions, but I hope to soon as we are finally opening up again in Illinois. I have taken to-go meals several times though, and I like the quantity of food they serve, and mostly pretty good homestyle meals. I decided to start visiting here to support more locally owned businesses instead of some of the chain restaurants. It's a nice place for breakfast. I've enjoyed other menu items. The food is good for a traditional family restaurant. They have the best fries. I wasn't happy with the stuffed peppers that were like mush and had no flavor. The people tend to be nice. Unfortunately, I've had problems with the service more than a few times. I actually got up and walked out once, because I sat for approximately 15 minutes and no one waited on me. I've waited for my bill far longer that it took me to eat too many times. My family and I stopped here for lunch after church, as mentioned in other reviews it's like a mom and pop type of restaurant. They offer EVERYTHING, all day breakfast items include skillets, Swedish pancakes, omelettes and the usual pancake, waffle, frenchtoast combos. Lunch and dinner items including soups, sandwiches, wraps, salads and ribs, fish, steak, gyros and pasta options. I had the hot turkey which consisted of turkey on top of white bread, mashed potatoes and gravy...all over! My daughter had the grilled cheese with ham and my husband had the monte christo (ham, turkey, Swiss cheese on toasted bread). Everything was good, our waitress Judy was very sweet and attentive. Your brunch service needs help. I've worked in the industry in the past for 6years. There is no hustle here. I love the food , that's where the stars come from. Every time we come , it's just my son and I . We get the same thing every time as well. It's just 2 of us with simple breakfast orders. We just moved to the area and we were excited to have your diner in walking distance but we're going back to Johnnie pancakes on east state. 4 times we been here, not once have we gotten our food under 20 minutes . This last visit, 32 minutes ! We love the food , but that's not right. And of course, literally 5 minutes after we got our food, we get the check and told to have a nice weekend? I've given this place 4 honest tries, but the service just sucks. Improve the flow of your waitresses and work as a team. You'll get better results I promise. read more

This is like a mom & pop dine in. It is my grandpa's favorite breakfast spot. I've been in several times but not as nearly as my grandpa and mom have. I'm kind of doing a review for all 3 of us lol. In all of my times in and also my grandpa's/mom, we have experienced excellent service. Quick, friendly and very attentive. Prices are great and food is tasteful. The decor and atmosphere is outdated and you see an older crowd there but it goes with the theme, location and well i'm not one to be too picky unless a place violates basic FDA rules. We've eaten here numerous times for breakfast, lunch and dinner and have never had any issues. However, tonight's experience was another story. My husband and I each had the soup and salad combo and decided to split a turkey and bacon club sandwich (with a side of mayonnaise as well). When our sandwich arrived (minus the side of mayo), it didn't look like there was much turkey and/or bacon. After a couple of bites, my husband realized that there wasn't much turkey and/or bacon. He brought it to our server's attention, she asked if we wanted to see the manager and we said yes. After a couple of minutes, she returned (without the manager) and asked if she could take our plates and show the manager. Again, after a couple of more minutes, she came back (without the manager or our plates) and said they took the sandwich off the bill but were still going to charge us for the soup and salad. We said that's fine and she left the check and walked away! First of all, having worked in restaurants in the past, when a customer asks to see the manager, the manager shows up, secondly, it's appropriate to ask the customer if perhaps they'd like something else as well (especially when they take your plates!). They were both good, but nothing spectacular. All the dishes are reasonably priced, about $10 / person including your coffee and tax. Had really great Eggs Benedict for breakfast....wasn't expecting it from a small homestyle restaurant. I must say I was pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere is typical, nothing fancy kind of like walking into your grandmothers family room....but your not paying for the atmosphere. Service was good to boot! So overall I must say it is a well deserved four stars! Great food, good customer service, clean and cozy place to relax and eat....who can ask for more on a Saturday morning! My family has dined at Alpine View dozens of times and the friendly staff and service is a huge part of the reason we continue there. We're middle aged and love to eat where the staff remembers us and - even after a several month break - still remembered us and our typical breakfast order. They greet us with big smiles and warm attention. My wife's tea and honey included! I like the eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes and waffles. My wife enjoys the skillets or the daily special. I prefer their Swedish pancakes over even Stockholm Inn's. They redecorated the interior several months ago and it looks better than all the chain restaurants. The prices are very reasonable at about $8-10 per person including a decent Tip. I highly recommend Alpine View! read more
