Called ahead ordered regular French toast. They gave me some cinnamon swirl crap that was over priced and awful. They did it for the up charge. Because regular French toast was 11 and the cinnamon crap was 13. The rest was ok but they used to be good but now they are way overpriced for breakfast and the lady that took the order did not even suggest the other French toast was on the menu. I haven't been there in a while but I won't be going back soon. Not happy at all. read more

A few weeks back I reviewed the 5 Coins restaurant and criticized them for what seemed an excessive surcharge for eggs, thin non-Heinz ketchup (in Heinz bottles) and an overall reduction in food quality (compared to the former owners). I decided to give them another try recently and was pleased to see major improvement. The surcharge for eggs is gone, a variety of condiments are at each table. The ketchup isn't Heinz but it's a decent quality alternative. But most importantly, the quality of the food seems comparable to what it had been in the past. The service was good as usual and the restaurant was clean and well kept offering a family style ambiance. I had breakfast which is generally a pretty straight forward meal in terms of food and preparation. Next time I'm going for lunch. If my lunch experience is as good as my breakfast was, I'll be back as a regular customer. read more

My husband and I stopped here on our way on our way through Rockford; the diner is in a strip mall within two miles of I-39. He conjured up an a la carte breakfast involving gyros meat; he said the rye toast tasted like it was made of homemade bread. I had the Eggs Benedict Florentine, and I practically licked the plate, the Hollandaise was so good. The spinach and mushrooms were sautéed just right (and generously piled on the tender English muffin) and the eggs were perfectly poached. I got fruit instead of hash browns, and I appreciated the option. The coffee was good--not barista-level but definitely fresh (some diner coffee tastes burnt but not here). I appreciated the open dining room (easy to navigate between tables) and the beautiful morning sunshine through the windows. Given the early winter snow and cold, the parking lot was ice packed and tricky to walk; pretend you're a penguin and waddle it. read more

The service is like any other family restaurant and you will be treated as such unless you are part of their family (you go there often). As always when traveling, the food goal is to try unique, non-chain restaurants. Two hours into the day's drive, we found 5 Coins Restaurant. I still don't know why it is called that. They serve breakfast all day, and that is enough for me. It turns out that 5 Coin is a quaint, strip mall restaurant doing a brisk business for the locals, not far from the interstate. This place had a fantastic breakfast selection. If I didn't have to stay alert to watch for deer, I might have tried the cinnamon roll French toast. Instead, I went the carnivore skillet route. They built it on a foundation of either fresh cut home fries, sort of a cube cut, or freshly grated hash browns. Mine had the home fries. On top of that was a grilled mixture of ham, sausage, bacon, peppers, onions, and shrooms. Finally, there were perfect over-medium eggs on top. It was crazy good. I couldn't eat it all. Our server, Bridgette, made an excellent food recommendation and kept our coffee hot. I could find no fault with the 5 Coin food or service. I wonder what their Eggs Benedict is like. read more

This restaurant is located in a strip mall. When I was there for breakfast the place was busy and I had a hard time finding a parking spot. The lot is shared with other stores and even that early on a Saturday morning, I ended up having to park on the opposite side of the strip mall from the restaurant. I ordered one of their skillets for breakfast. I honestly for the life of me can't remember which one. The portion size was just right for me. It wasn't so big to be daunting, but there was more food than I could finish. The skillet was okay. There was nothing all that spectacular about it. Usually when you go to a restaurant like this you'll find a nice combination of flavors in the skillet. This one just kind of all blended together into a good, but not great flavor. The server we had was a little off her game that morning. I'm not sure if it was because they were busy, she was having a bad day or what, but we'd go long periods of time between visits and would wait to get drink refills or if we needed anything else. When it was time to go, it took a while for us to get the check. One less than stellar experience with service doesn't mean the entire time it's like that, but it did make me question whether or not I wanted to return for another visit. The atmosphere is that of a small locally owned restaurant. Various decorations on the walls and clean dining area. Since this is a family restaurant there were kids running around and playing in the bathroom. Something I abhor. It's not the restaurants fault that people don't know how to parent or teach their children proper restaurant etiquette, but they really should address these kids getting in the way and making a mess in the bathroom. Overall I thought it was a nice restaurant and I would like to try them again. Maybe just not for breakfast on a weekend. read more

Came here for a quick lunch with a co-worker and was happy with the experience. I got the Greek salad and a cup of one of the soups and he got the monte cristo sandwich. We ate every morsel of food we had, so clearly it was good and the price was right! Everything on the menu was reasonably priced, so you'll go home full and not break the bank. Staff was friendly as well. Now that I'm living in the area this will definitely be a lunch spot for me. read more

We go here for breakfast on Sunday morning's after church. Mom loves the Black Forest Waffles. I usually get the Classic Breakfast. What you see is what you get for the price. The first time I ate here, I was blown away by the food and service. Since that visit, though, I have visited three separate times and have gotten terrible service and sub par food. The hostess is very rude, I have waited over ten minutes for a seat when there are very clearly available tables. I received an omelet with an olive put in it that almost broke my tooth... then barely got an apology let alone any sort of new order or discount. I was so excited my first visit, but have felt extremely disappointed since then. After giving them the opportunity to redeem themselves, I know that I will not return again. read more

My boyfriend and I met a friend for breakfast on a Saturday morning recently. We all ordered the Farmers breakfast which included two eggs, hash browns, toast, and meat choice. We all chose the ham steak and hash browns with onions and peppers. My boyfriend's hash browns had so much onion and peppers on them that he could hardly eat them while I had to search to find any in mine. Appears the quality control isn't the best. The "ham steak" was a piece of heated greasy processed pork shoulder, not the real sliced and grilled ham steak we were expecting. In addition, my rye toast was barely toasted and soggy. Although our friend raves about this place, my boyfriend and I won't go back to spend $9/plate for a mediocre breakfast we could make ourselves for less than 1/2 the price. read more

My father and stepmother love this place and are regulars. Because of this fact, I have eaten here a few times. The juice is fresh, the food is hot, made to order and well presented. I stopped in for lunch today, table of 1. I was greeted and sat quickly, with a glass of ice water before the waitstaff arrived. The waitress was prompt and friendly. I ordered the Tuna Salad Sandwich which came with fries and a cup of soup. The sandwich was very home style (tuna salad on grocery store sandwich sized bread), but it tasted fresh and the bread was good - and frankly, that's about the size a lunch sandwich should be. The fries were steak-cut, reasonably portioned, and well cooked. I ordered the tomato & rice soup - it was rather thick but tasted excellent. Overall the a relaxing sit down lunch with quality food and good service was worth twice the $5 and change the meal came out to. Definitely will be eating here again. read more

I took my mom for lunch and she was told by the waitress that there soups were excellent, especially on Thursday Ruben soup , Now that just gave my mom a challenge so Thursday afternoon mom asked if I would take her back to try the soup and of course you can't say no to mom so we did and the waitress didn't disappoint the soup was wonderful and hot. This was my first time, had the hot turkey sandwich. It was delicious!! The hot turkey sandwich had a side of mash potatoes with gravy on top of the mash potatoes and the sandwich. The mash potatoes and gravy were homemade and tasted delicious. The turkey was moist and soft and had a good flavor with that gravy. We are basically happy with this place however, one in a while you get a waitress having a bad day. Our group was a typical after Sunday church breakfast morning. 10 people total in our group. After all had been served the desired meal but waiting n toasts, the waitress asks if there was anything else she could get us and the table all spoke at once on what we needed. I asked for more butter, it was not for me mind you but another person at the table had nudged me to ask for it, I asked and I was told" the Toast is buttered" I replied , Yes, but we need a few more. I was nice, my toast came back to me drenched in butter, slathered in butter, it was a mess of butter then on top of my toast where 2 more cubes of butter to be opened. As we all looked at my toast , other looked at theirs, scant amounts of butter could be found, its like the waitress was pissed and put all the butter for the table on my toast as if to say" ITS BUTTERED" Nit picky I know but the butter I asked for was needed for pancakes and the small frozen cubes are hard to deal with and we just wanted a few extra.
