I can't articulate what a huge help Linda and the staff at AVL continue to be as mom's disease progresses.

My Mother-in-law was a difficult resident due to confusion, combativeness and being confrontational. She was a resident for over 5 years. Wonderful interactive activities and care. The food is great. After another scary fall I knew that living alone was no longer an option. I toured several options and ultimately selected Ramona Senior Manor. When I walked in the front doors I knew this place was different. I saw a care team of loving staff attending to the residents (it was meal time). I met with the admitting staff to review my father's needs, likes and dislikes. He was still in the ER at hospital and the only way he would go was if I forced the issue. I was so upset and worried he would be angry at me and that our relationship would be forever damaged. Jim - went to the ER and talked to my dad about what it would look like for him to stay at "the Manor" to get him stronger. We selected a large room downstairs. The team made sure every request I had was fulfilled (from a small refrigerator to a desk where he could sit and do his "bills". My father thrived at the Manor. To watch him socialize and eat three square meals was so special. He gained weight and talked about how good the food was! He accepted that he was struggling on his own and took advantage of every opportunity to participate in all the activities! My father was inherently a kind gentle and lovely human. We got to see the best of him come out again when he finally accepted the help he so desperately needed. My father ended up going on hospice care after a month at the Manor. He did not want anymore hospital visits. Ramona Senior Manor works in conjunction with Hospice provider we selected (Radiant Hospice) to have a continuous care team making each day the best possible! My father made his transition on December 28, 2024. He had been a resident since November 17, 2023 and on Hospice services since December 2023. To every single human from the chef to the janitor and each and every person who showered him with kindness and care we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We love all of you. The family of Robert "Lynn" Bennett. October 14,1934 - December 28, 2024.

Susan listened to our family story, learning about both who our mother is and what her care needs are. Both of these perspectives were critical to finding the "best fit" community for mom and for us. Susan knows the questions to ask and what she needs to know so she can narrow the search to focus only on communities that are potential matches for the family and individual's care needs. Susan did everything she could with us in advance of visiting communities to make that day easier. She had community info and could answer many of our questions before we even talked to the community's team. And when we met with the community's team, Susan asked questions after my sister and I finished ours to get answers to things we wanted to know and had forgotten. The value of Susan's services for families is exceptional because her fees are paid by the community which a family selects. It's a win-win all the way around and this cost model really benefited our family. We forged a collaborative partnership with Susan to find mom's community without having to worry about what service costs how much. I can't express how grateful and appreciative we are of the time we worked with Susan. In our case, Susan suggested we start with visiting three communities and the first one was a perfect fit for our mom's care and us as a family. Susan even checked in on us after mom moved in and wanted to make sure the community was meeting our expectations (and hers!). Susan did the legwork needed to ensure our mom's comfort and safety, and it lifted so much of the burden my sister and I felt regarding finding a community for mom. Susan receives my HIGHEST recommendation!

BEWARE OF GLOWING REVIEWS FROM EMPLOYEES. Reviews on a business should be from a customer…read moreperspective. Not from those who work for the business and are likely going to be "encouraged" to give 5* reviews. This is one of the biggest reasons I am not a fan of Yelp. It's terribly manipulated and allows, even facilitates, bias. There's one bad employee review from Andrew J here as well. Although, it also goes to bias, at least it shows some insight on this business. In regards to MY experience with ASTC, I think ASTC is the epitome of the state of our mental health system in California. It's unfortunate, and I think businesses like this are exploitive and not as helpful as "advertised." My son was there for nearly two years and although he was "safe" from harm, I believe the ASTC is a common business model of simple warehousing of the mentally ill. There was very little, if any, "rehabilitation" or "transitionary" resources, therapy, or "treatment" which ironically, IS IN THEIR NAME. I've found many of their policies antiquated, useless, and in some cases downright counter productive. Unfortunately, there are very few choices for Californians suffering from mental illness in the residential care establishment. Most are financial machines that merely manage their population by sedation. It's impersonal and NOT a "treatment." Certainly, not anything "Special." The residents have NO access to classroom programs, rehabilitation programs, vocational programs, or anything else that appears to prepare them for transition to independent living and life skills. They have no access to computers, cell phones, or Internet access in any form. Visitation is very limited and on most days in an inadequate environment, and you can't even enjoy your meal with your loved one. I've read the reviews from the employees that were not happy there, and it comes as no surprise. My experience with the staff was not always pleasant and the low morale was apparent. In fairness, they were not ALL unpleasant. People are all individuals and handle things differently. However, if you have anything to say to staff I almost forgot to mention, I saw no evidence of any encouragement of physical activity or access to a recreational facility aside from a caged in (15' X 30' maybe) patio with table and chairs, but NO exercise or recreational equipment to speak of. You don't have to be a doctor to know that physical activity is directly correlated to mental health. Someone should also speak to their "dietician" and dramatically change their diets. Every meal and snack time my son spoke of was full of carbs and sugars. The only restriction I witnessed was their policy on caffeinated drinks. Again, that's great. But, seemed like more of a self serving interest for the staff to not have their residents given anything to counter their ability to manage them. It's a warehouse and your loved one is inventory.
