False Hope and Wasted Energy
Those seeking respite care are usually running on empty. When you reach out to an agency, you are hoping for a lifeline, not an obstacle course.
I specifically chose Sunshine HHA over a massive corporate conglomerate because I am a former small business owner and wanted to support a local agency. Unfortunately, their intake process was so profoundly disorganized that it actively added stress to an already difficult situation.
My initial hour-long phone call with the owner, Deaydre, was chaotic. She was multitasking, distracted, and struggled to stay on topic. At one point, she asked an inappropriate and completely irrelevant question about what I believed caused my son's autism. Despite the lack of professional structure, she assured me our specific service needs could be met and claimed to have the "perfect caregiver" in mind. She then scheduled an in-home intake with an administrator, Daniel.
When Daniel arrived, it became immediately clear that no internal communication had taken place. I had to burn more of my limited time and energy answering the exact same questions I had just answered with Deaydre. Worse, Daniel lacked basic training on their offerings and directly contradicted Deaydre's promises, stating he didn't actually know if they could accommodate the services we needed.
Later that afternoon, Daniel left a voicemail (bizarrely calling from a number with the Caller ID "San Diego Coffee Roasters") simply stating they couldn't help us because they actually "didn't have anybody available." That said, his voicemail was polite and cordial (Daniel is at no fault here).
I am generally a very forgiving, easy-going person, but a respite care agency must understand its clientele. Your clients are primary caregivers actively managing severe physical, mental, and emotional burnout. Navigating a disjointed, uncoordinated system--and being given false hope about a "perfect caregiver" only to be dropped due to lack of staff after investing hours of time--is the antithesis of respite. It actively compounds the exhaustion of the families you exist to help.
I do not wish this business ill will; they seem like genuine people. However, after 36 years in business, there is no excuse for operations to be this messy. I hope this review serves as a wake-up call to streamline their process so future families don't endure the same frustrating runaround. read more
