Found the shop on a Google search. I also love shopping small. Went to this location and had the best service. The selection is amazing. Prices were very fair and the quality of his merchandise was top notch. Chris was so kind and patient helping me get the gear I needed. He never tried to oversell me on anything even though he easily could have done so. He walked me around and helped me get everything that my husband would need to stay warm and have an epic time snowboarding. His passion and thoughtfulness shone through. He was answering phone calls, handling other customers and juggling me with ease. Super fantastic. Will come back to Sterling or Fairfax for any future needs. If you miss the Chantilly Sun & Ski, take a trip 15 minutes north to see these folks in Sterling. They were *busy* on Saturday but we had a great experience working with Casey to try to find some skis for our 6 year old and getting answers to snowboard and boot questions for our 9 year-old snowboarder. We picked up a really nice set of skis and they included the bindings, which was a plus. They had the time to take care of the board while we waited, which was really cool! They are also going to be able to make some small repairs to my skis before tuning them. Caroline and Casey helped us out with gloves and socks. They don't carry Spyder but they do carry some really really nice brands and had a few things on sale even though it is in the middle of the season. My snowboarder can go through a pair of gloves or two in a season, so we like to have a spare pair. The store is absolutely beautiful inside and feels like an upscale lodge. However, we did like the old-school rustic feel of the Sun & Ski in Chantilly as well. COVID-19: They do require masks (yay!) and the customers try to keep spread out though it can be a bit difficult in the back with the ski boots on a weekend. Outstanding customer service! If you're looking to buy ski boots or just explore future options, this locally owned business is well worth a visit. After 2 years of frustrating ski boot rentals that did not fit well, my wife, two sons (12 yrs, 10 yrs) and I took the plunge to buy ski boots in early December 2017. Alpine Ski Shop was great (I would recommend their Sterling location which has a wider selection than their Fairfax location). Since my two sons are growing, we used their "buy-back" program which allows you to buy inexpensive, used boots (for the kids) and they will buy them back at 50% of what you paid after the season ends. My wife and I purchased brand new Nordica ski boots and were glad to make this investment. They were comfortable and fit really well. It was helpful to try on different brands as some boots felt more comfortable. We also bought 2 Giro helmets for the kids (which were on sale). Owning ski boots saved us a lot of time when we rented skis in Vermont. Since my wife and I live in a townhouse and refuse to drive a minivan or large SUV, we don't have much space to store skis. I came to Alpine Ski Shop a week before to explore, and was very impressed the salespeople did not pressure me to buy anything. For first-timers, it's a little tricky to find the store. Coming up Route 28 north from Dulles Airport, you take Route 625 East (Waxpool Road.), which is in the opposite direction of Ashburn and the Wegmans. But to reach the store, you have to loop around two side streets, which can be confusing. You'll know that you are driving in the right direction if you pass a Thai Buddhist temple on your left. read more

One of the best kept secrets for a local skate shop. I mean they sell a lot of other fun stuff too, but I was there to buy a long board for my son for 8th grade grad. I wanted a drop through flex deck. They had a few different options. I chose a Landyachtz which came with Bear trucks (sweet!). Sales guy was super knowledgable and even scored a few Alpine stickers. Love this place! It's now become my go to snowboard/skate shop. While prices are usually not discounted, I'm here for the knowledge and customer care. At this, they Are second to none. I just got new Burton step ons and a neversummer proto II board. Tried them out a week ago at snowshoe and unfortunately...The BOA strap broke on my last run! Look the next day to Alpine and they had it fixed in 24 hours...can't do that online!!! If you have any questions, go see Pat...he's the f*ing man! Seriously....this guy loves his job and it shows. Tonight, I had one of the best shopping experiences that I can remember, and I find myself saying that every time I go to Alpine, whether in Fairfax or Sterling. Took my kids in to get skate pads since I gave them my old school boards to learn on. First, the staff were all in masks so that was a big plus. Second, the building (I was told specifically made for Alpine) just has a great warm feeling that you would expect from a cool ski and skate shop when you step inside. But then you notice the cool details of what the owner, Chris, has added to the merch. A lifetime of collector skis (including Jerry and Grateful Dead designs) hang from the ceiling. As you move through the store you see Chris' and Tyler's (his brother) old skateboard decks as well as some of their very cool Alpine custom design decks presented among the merch which is all tastefully laid out. MOST IMPORTANT, Chris did an amazing job of making my two boys (11 and 7) feel right at home, even though they are absolute skateboarding beginners. I was so inspired by the store and energy that he and his staff exuded that I decided to buy my own old-school board. I picked out a super cool Tracker deck, some purple trucks and some sweet Dogtown two-tone wheels to match. When he began to cut up my grip tape into zebra like stripes, I knew I was going to have a sick board when he finished...it was just the right touch. As he worked putting the board together, he regaled me and my boys with old skateboarding stories. I thumbed through a well-worn skateboard art book he had as he spoke and then flipped through an old issue of Thrasher that he held onto. All of it, the store, the conversation, the skate art, the authentic energy ...took me right back to '84...what a wonderful trip it was! And even if I'm just a 50 year old dad who is reliving his youth and about to get a bunch of gnarly bruises trying to keep up with my kids, I can't thank Chris and the staff at Alpine enough for the way they served my two boys and for sending me on my way with a warm heart and a nostalgic yearning for that old summer feeling of skating out in the streets til it got dark..can't recommend these guys and this store enough! read more

Alpine Ski Shop in Sterling, VA is a FANTASTIC business! This family owned local shop sets the bar for how salesmanship, product knowledge, customer interaction and value should all operate. From the time I set foot in the store to the time I was walking out with my purchases, I felt like my consultant, Bryson, and the owner, Chris, appreciated my patronage regardless of whether I was going to purchase or not. I'm not sure how long I was in the store for to be honest but I believe it was close to an hour and a half. It was the most enjoyable hour and a half I've ever had when it comes to making purchasing decisions because Bryson really took the time to explain to me the technology changes since I last purchased Skis and the related equipment 17 years ago. The biggest investment one can make these days is in a good quality boot and after trying several on that Bryson recommended based on my style of skiing and my physical traits, we settled on a pair and I never once felt like he was trying to sell me something I didn't want. These folks are into snow sports themselves and really believe in their products and it truly comes across in how they talk about it and what they recommend. After getting the boots, the next step was skis and the bindings which went pretty quick and I was expecting to have to come back a few days later to pick up the skis....that's when Chris came into the picture and surprised me by having my skis binded and waxed within twenty minutes....talk about excellent service! The depth and breadth of their inventory is fantastic and the store is laid out wonderfully and is a delight to browse through. There were other staff members there that were attentive and cheerful even though they weren't serving me which added to my overall enjoyment of shopping here. Both Bryson and Chris have shown me just how great it is to be treated like a valued customer and I will certainly be continuing to support them with getting my skis tuned and waxed throughout the winter along with investing in some more purchases to be sure! My first visit to Alpine Ski Shop (yay, local biz!) was with the intent of having my new snowboard and bindings adjusted to my preferences/stance. All you really need to know is that Trent and Mitch in the ski/board shop ROCK! I didn't even buy my board or bindings from Alpine, yet they did a very thorough dismount/remount of my bindings, switched them to goofy from regular stance, and made sure I was happy with the angles before they finished their work. They didn't try to "sell" me on anything, which was great, considering the board had just been tuned by its previous owner at a difference shop. And even though the guys knew I wasn't planning on making a purchase that day, they were really cool about helping me to try on several pairs of snowboard boots, again offering sage and helpful advice, as well as adding their own subjective opinions about the equipment, which was helpful! They also measured both of my feet, and had me try on different sizes and varieties of boots, asking all the right questions along the way. I can't wait to return to Alpine for one of their equipment swap events, and also for my future board servicing needs, and for new winter/board equipment down the road! Alpine has a really extensive selection of women's specific snowboard equipment, and it is set apart from the men's equipment, so there's no mixing it up. They have a great selection of bindings, boots, and decks from many high-end manufacturers, and they really don't carry any base-model or no-name junk, which is great! However, prices are still very fair. As for gear, I got lost for a long time drooling over their selection of coats, gloves, goggles, socks, and more. Really cute women's snow boots from Moon Boots and Sorel, too! No need for me to ever return to Ski Chalet; Alpine Ski Shop is more convenient, the staff friendlier, more attentive, and generally more knowledgeable and engaging. I can not believe this retail mecca has somehow slipped past me in the 5 years that I have lived in the metro DC area. Really? Me? The girl that used to pray for snow, when we offered up prayers in catholic school? The girl who would willingly use up every vacation day each year to take ski trips? I....me.... somehow missed this fantastic chalet inspired building loaded with colorful jackets, fat glossy skis and funky colorful helmets? I drive past this place a few times each month. Its a few hundred yards away from Wegmans, the best grocery store in the world.... and I managed to not even be aware of its existence? I'm slipping. Must be old age. Anyhow, I attended one of my snowboard meetup group happy hours earlier this week, and Chris, one of the store owners, happened to join our group to promote his store. I am very glad he did. I made a point of visiting my customers out in Leesburg the very next day, and back tracked right to his store to check out his selection of gear. A word to the wise: shop early. Especially if you are a size 6.5 and looking for snowboard boots. Chris was super helpful and full of information, but sadly he was out of my size in most brands. But he did have a larger inventory in mens ski boots when I brought my husband back on Saturday, and we scored a mac daddy set up for him. I think this is the first time the husb has cooler gear than I do. I'm very jealous!! Chris was extremely patient and was able to answer all of Sean's questions. He was honest, straight up, and threw in some of his dry sense of humor. Great sales person traits. Informative, to the point, and funny. After sizing Sean up, finding the proper boot options, explaining why he chose each boot for him, based on his height, weight and ability level, Chris molded the boot liners and had the bindings mounted on our new skis. Freshly waxed and adjusted for his weight, we are ready to head out to Jackson Hole in two weeks. I actually wouldn't mind breaking my skis out there. Location, location, location. This place has suffered in all three regards due to the recent upgrades to Rt. 28 and Waxpool/Church. All of the businesses on this corner have. Fortunately, you can see the Alpine Ski Shop from Church St. and stop by on impulse. While you're in there you might get decked out for a ski trip out west. They have a selection of ski jackets and pants that was larger than I expected for a store of its size. They had a large selection of caps (which I am always shopping for, because the perfect cap is hard to find). In the back they had a pretty large room for skis and boards. I didn't look at what they had in terms of hardware, I was just in there for some wax. At the counter the guy was super friendly and gave me not only a brief overview on applying wax to my board, he gave me a hunk of cork that was very useful in the process. I was really impressed at every facet of this store, but especially the friendly and helpful staff. Now, if they can just get a decent access road... read more

Love this store. Chris & Tyler always make sure you're taken care of, and they've never steered me wrong on a purchase. On more than one occasion I've gone out with some piece of gear based on their recommendation only to be complemented by someone else who knows their stuff. They're not necessarily the *cheapest* store in the area, but I'm more than willing to pay the extra for the expertise and one-on-one attention that goes with it. In my experience, they *always* take care of you. It takes a lot for me to have to go anywhere else. (and if inexpensive is super-important to you, this year they had a vendor sample sale and have swap-meet style sales every season.) read more

I can't say enough great things about this ski shop. Having given up on Ski Chalet's horrible customer service, I learned about ASS from fellow Yelpers. I came here looking for a pair of ski boots. The boot fitter guys here are absolutely fantastic, and they took the time to properly measure me (unlike Ski Chalet, where they kept trying to get me to rent a pair of ladies boots and I'm a dude). After I purchased the boots, I noticed that the "sixth toe" of the boot was rubbing against my foot, so I brought it back and they re-adjusted the boot, no questions asked. I may have to take it back again but I don't anticipate any problems. Their prices are reasonable and comparable to the other big chains. And I much more prefer to give my cash to a local business than to Ski Chalet (which Iis owned by some wealthy Texas baron). There is one major downside to ASS: If you're coming from DC or Arlington, Alpine Ski Shop is in the middle of NOWHERE. It's located in the outer suburbs; on a good day no traffic it takes me 35-40 minutes to get there. During rush hour it once took me over an hour, plus I had to pay $5 on Dulles Toll Road to get there. I hope ASS will consider opening a more convenient location. Otherwise I'll still keep coming. I purchased a pair of Head Kore 99 from the crew at Alpine Ski Shop in Sterling. They know me well enough to know that I am very particular with my gear. These skis were not at all on my radar. However after some discussion with Chris and Casey it was clear they absolutely believed they were the right sticks for me. I'm here now on day 5 of my trip to Park City and the only thing not meeting my expectations are my legs. These skis are outstanding. They have me turning and burning stronger and faster than usual. They are stiff and strong enough to plow through deep crud, light enough to float in untracked snow and yes they still carve like a GS ski. Although I have not purchased any equipment from them my husband bought new Solomon boots - the time and care that went into helping him was above and beyond customer service. I don't remember who helped him, sorry. As far as the service that blew me away is helping my boots get comfortable again. Chris was great! It was a simple fix but again being very helpful and friendly also helps :) He gave me a call when new footbeds (since he figured that was the problem which it was) and when I picked them up someone else helped by putting them in heating them up and making sure everything was comfortable We recently bought skis at another ski shop and we were bummed we didn't buy them here just to give them more business. Tonight I brought my 3 year old who is interested in skateboarding and has a Fisher Prince first skateboard. They were super encouraging and helped me upgrade his board so it would be more authentic. While doing that they helped me pick out my first skateboard. I'm in my mid 30s and never rode before. They gave me multiple options and weren't trying to just sell the most expensive one. This is really a best of the best local gem. The staff is fantastic, they have a passion for snow sports and the knowledge to fit you with the correct gear. I kind of felt like I was shopping in Colorado but with people that didn't have the glazed over retail haze of a tourist spot. Prices are more then fair. I did a little google shopping comparison and this place was able to beat every price I found online, I was actually amazed. To be honest, even if they were close I wouldn't hesitate to support a local business after receiving the assistance and direction of the staff. They also sell discounted tickets, so don't hesitate to ask if they can hook you up before your next excursion. Recently found this place out of the blue looking for snowboarding gear for my boyfriend and he gave an associate his budget for gear and they got right to it. Super nice fellow, took his time explaining everything to us, no rush kept asking us if we were in a hurry and we were not but he was very accommodating to us. And gave us everything we came for we got a board, bindings, and snow boots all in our budget. The atmosphere is really cool you see pictures and stickers and boards and skis everywhere. It's a very artistic place they have everything you need if you're going to a ski resort. We also came back a different day for gloves and I fell in love with crab grabs. They are so warm and cute.
