Aloha Shell is one of the few remaining mom & pop gas stations that still employ attendants offering "full service" at some of the pumps. Young ones won't know what the hell that means, so Google it! They even have a repair garage that always looks busy. No convenience store though. While I don't come here for gas, I was forced here for the HI-5 recycling redemption service, ran by Aloha Recycling. I usually patronize the location next to UHMC but their redemption center has been closed for several weeks already due to staffing, but you can still drop off recyclables there. Tucked in between the gas station and car wash is the small, dirty and bustling operation. Grab one of the netted carts, dump your separated goods in them and wheel it to the attendant. They'll print out a receipt which you take to the gas station's window cashier who'll disperse your money. OVERALL: Do your part and recycle! read more

Since our redemption center in Haiku is closed we now bring our recycling here. Not sure if it's better or worse, but it's also a gas station, in case you need to fuel up or pick up a few necessary items, and even use the bathroom. There's an outdoor sink if you need to wash your hands after handling your recyclables. It seems to be a pretty busy spot as far as recycling goes, and there are people to assist. Recycling is accepted until 7:30 pm on weekdays. It is 7:21pm Friday night. No one is at the recycling weight station. I walk into the cashier's station/minimart and ask for assistance. The young man was polite but I was VERY disappointed, as he told me they had already closed. I have been coming here for years. I must admit it really hurts my feelings that they are not following they're posted hours. I even telephoned before leaving my house, in case their hours have changed. Thus guys are awesome. We had a screw in a tire and were went to thee other guys on Alamaha and they couldn't help us there. They told us to come back on Thursday now that's not good to drive around with a screw in the tire going up and down Haleakala Hwy. Di we decided to come to Aloha Shelland we parked the car on the side and went in ri check if they could fix the tire the girl working said sure park right behind that truck and they can fix it for you. Shi we did and the young gentleman worked on the tire. I guess the big boss came out to check and said it was okay to fix.. he fixed it and plugged it in less then 15 minutes. He also put air in the tires that needed it. If you need your tire fix or you need work on your car come here. Oh and yes they do have gas so put gas here. These guys are on it. read more

I don't ever come here to put gas. I think their prices are higher than another gas station down the road, but they're also one of the few places left that actually has gas attendants to fill your car. So maybe that higher price is justified for some? Anywho, I come here to do my safety checks for my car. Not sure what the negative reviews are about, but maybe they've fixed that issue? I've come here for the past couple of years and have had no problems. The safety checks are first come, first served. You go into their little convenience store and sign-in on a paper and they go down the list. I really wish they did it by appointment and offered the option for a weekend day. However, they do safety checks until 5PM. So, it's not so bad. I would just recommend coming later in the afternoon since they seem to be slower at that time. Otherwise, you may find yourself waiting 45 minutes or longer (I've done that). No one was in line the last time I came and the gentlemen that helped me was very polite, nice, and even put the sticker on my car to get me out of the rain and send me on my way faster. The fees are different, depending on the type of vehicle you have, but will generally be around $20. They also do car repair here apparently and my brother took my car in to get my tire fixed when it went flat after running over a screw. They took out the screw, filled my tire up with the gooey stuff and it's been a few weeks now and hasn't gone flat since. That was super quick (less than 30 minutes?) and cheap too! They also have air and water stations with working tire pressure gauges that can be used free of charge. At the back of the gas station there's also a recycling redemption center. They even offer emergency road side assistance and locksmith services. Yep, Aloha Shell is definitely a full service gas station! I came here because my rental car gas cap said to use E85, which i had ASSUMED it was deisel. My rental company would not pick up the phone after i called them a million times, so I asked one of the employees working here. He was very sweet in answering my questions, and even helping me find suggestions on places to go since it was our first time in Maui. Only came here for a safety inspection on a Thursday at 11:30am. Some tips: 1. First come first served. Put your name on a waiting list located inside by the register. Luckily there was NO WAIT at the time I went. Call and ask how long the list is prior to coming in! 2. Parking: Park your car in the stalls to the right near the "vacuum air and water" 3. What you need to bring with you: Have your registration and insurance card on hand! The inspector will need it. He also asked to see the old safety check receipt record, but not required to have. 4. Duration: ~20 minute wait after he takes your car into the shop. There are plastic chairs outside in the shade to wait on. 5. Better than expected! I always thought Aloha Shell (because of their prime location) would be really high priced for car repairs, but my recent experience destroyed that myth. I went in to have my car inspected....and because they are really thorough (as they should be) they would not pass me until I fixed an oil leak I had. Mind you, I had taken it to another place 2 times to fix the oil leak and paid over $700 with that guy....and still had the leak. It was destroying my belts and other stuff. So, I left it with Aloha Shell to get a quote to repair it. Long story short....a nice guy named Lorenzo worked on my car and it is running better than ever and the price was around $280 and included steam cleaning the engine so they could see where the leak was (it was a mess in there). So, I am very happy and encourage you to consider them next time you have a repair. read more

It is amazing that these types of businesses can be ran in such a poor way, I will be filing a complaint with consumer affairs and the automotive bureau! I brought my vehicle here for the second time, as the first time was turned down and sent back because I have a BMW which is not old. My breaks had just gotten done, brought evidence of paid and dated mechanic/repair bill! The so called ridiculous, useless inspector was thinking too much about it and said , in order for it to pass computer needed to show no break light on, so ridiculous! So I go back to mechanic, parts get ordered, job gets done, bring car back a week later, he now finds other "problems " with tires, my tires were new from 6 months ago, i told him, he said you should've gotten this done with them, so stupid!!!' I replied, i didn't need an inspection back then 6 months ago, he just smirked and laughed!!! I had driven from Huelo. Got there at 4:20 . He said, he's not going to pass it, I was beyond angry and upset!!! The owner and this bozo, they both are extremely ignorant and have no idea how to run a biz, they create things that aren't there, not even the police would ever act this way! This really ruined my whole week due to much unnecessary driving due to their useless and POINTLESS RUNAROUND!!!! They will make your life hell, not any easy, they hate common sense. ITS SO TRUE WHAT THEY SAY! CAN'T FIX STUPID!!!! Luckily a friend referred me to another place in Wailuku, so I went Saturday morning and my safety passed in less than 10 mins, didn't have to even get out of car. Their name is Pateo. A great place to get your safety check. I live in Kihei, but the place I stopped at was a bit abrupt and smarmy. I didn't stay. On impulse, I drove to Kahului and was greeted with a great smile and attitude from the lady at the register. She was welcoming and invited me to park until the next available check appointment. Their tiny corner parking area was full - full of customers! - so I drove off, did an errand, and came back to have my safety check done. The gentleman also smiled, took my car, and I was done in about thirty minutes or less. He even pasted the sticker onto my license plate for me! Update: the guys working here are all nice guys. The issue was the manager who just went over the top on the tint thing. As a business, this was a bad move: as a new arrival this one incident eliminated all future business here: no gas, no garage services, and no more safety checks. Just overall a bad customer service move. ------ Do not bring your vehicle here for a safety check. Find somewhere, anywhere else to go. We had two cars we brought to the island and needed to get plates. DMV won't give plates without safety check first, so we come here and get temp inspection cert. A little annoying they don't take appointments and can't inspect more than one car at a time, but otherwise all fine. Get our plates and come back, and instead of just walking in and getting the sticker, we have to sign in and wait another 30 mins. Then they proceed to want to recheck our already passed vehicle, pulling out the "oh, you have tint and didn't pay for the tint inspection before...now we need to reinspect." All this despite the "passed" inspection I hold in my hand that the state already used to give me my plates. Of course, then they find our tint is now too dark. It's measuring illegal in every state the vehicle has ever been registered in, yet somehow non-Hawaiian tint measuring devices must be 10% more sensitive than CA, TX, CO, VA, and AL--those states never found the tint to be as dark as it measures here. But nevertheless: No tint removal, no safety sticker. When I asked how it is that my relatively light tint fails and all these other folks drive around with obviously darker tint on their cars, the answer is "they just know somebody." Moral of the story: if you "know somebody" at Aloha Shell your safety inspection process is probably no big deal. Otherwise, find anyone else to give your business... that's what we'll do from here on out. read more

husband heard that this place does safety checks. I decided to check it out. we spent $1K+ on maintenance for our truck before moving to Maui from Oahu. there were NO lights turned on, on our dash. the main guy that does safety checks gave us a temp safety, because our battery wasn't being held down by the rods (I was aware of that and was waiting for another auto shop to call me when they've ordered the part). as we were driving home, my husband notices that our check engine light was on and the traction off light was on. called the next morning asking about the lights being turned on because it wasn't on prior to getting the safety. they claimed I kept blaming them but I really just wanted an answer as to why and what they did. anyways, came back that day to get the actual safety sticker because the auto shop installed the rods, and he handled the situation with me about the phone call in an unprofessional way. he claimed that he was going to tell me to not come back (as he was laughing). I didn't care at that point and definitely will not be coming back. I got more answers from I.H. Auto Service (which I HIGHLY recommend ANYONE needing any service done and safety checks) than Shell. Josh was very polite, professional and efficient. While I waited he pulled out a nail and four short wires from my rear tires and patched them up. He also gave me a really good deal because he knew I had to purchase all four new tires in the future. This type of worker really makes a place and truly practices the aloha this place advertises. I got a flat tire, and roadside assistance swapped the flat for my spare, leaving me with a tire in need of repair. I went to Aloha Shell, and they were able to assign someone right away to fix my flat, and then remount it. I'm giving them 5 stars because the young woman who did the service had such a great attitude. Out of curiosity (and wanting to learn how to do it next time for myself!) I watched her, and asked some questions. She willingly explained everything as she worked, not like some who might have been grumpy or unfriendly. When she was done, I was left with the spare, which mounts to the undercarriage beneath the bed of the truck, and which I knew I wasn't going to be able to remount by myself. I asked if there was another charge to remount the spare, and she said no. Now, never having had a flat before, I don't know if replacing the spare to it's proper place is usually part of the service. But I asked her if she would help me put it back, and she did so with the same great attitude she displayed all along. I just wanted to give a quick shout out to Aloha Shell next to Kahului post office. My tire starting going flat over the weekend. I kept adding air and knew I needed to get it checked. After calling around for places to plug it, I was quoted it would take 2 hours to all day. Someone suggested Aloha Shell. I pulled into full service. The young man squirted soap water and immediately found a bolt in my tire. He plugged it in less than 5 minutes and I never had to remove the tire. I was just amazed. I had gone to town 2 hours early expecting to wait for a long time. They were friendly, quick and only cost $20. I will definitely return for future tire issues. read more
