I was never a fan of Aloha Poke when it first opened but I'm about giving second chances and yet it still failed to meet my expectations. Service super terrible. I was waiting to get my to go order and asked one of the workers and her reply was she doesn't know. Once I asked the cashier, she was able to give my order that has been sitting there. There needs to be a better system for pick up orders. Why are we waiting in the same line as people just taking orders? The worker looked like she didn't even want to be there. Awful honestly. I wish I had read the last two poor reviews written in the last month on this place because my friend and I were very disappointed. We ordered from here on Friday, December 4th around 6:30pm and it's within walking distance to the pad. Walked down to grab it - it was ready when we got there. They just handed us the bag and didn't offer to put any chopsticks or napkins, etc. We get home, open it up, and notice that there are many ingredients missing and even the rice is dry and cold. I asked for Furikake, it wasn't there. I asked for Tempura Crunch, it wasn't there. No Wasabi (and on the receipt was written "no wasabi" so I'm assuming they ran out. Strange for a place like a Poke shop. My friend's bowl didn't have any furkake either and he also complained about the poor quality of rice and protein. The protein quality on mine didn't even seem good (my tuna and salmon). To think that we paid almost $25 for a shitty to-go dinner with only two scoops is annoying. I've been here many times and typically love it, but today's experience was not up to par. The white rice base was stale and had chunks of hard rice. It was also very cold, like it had been taken out of the fridge instead of warm and soft from the rice maker. Aside from the stale rice, the other toppings and marinated fish tasted fresh and I absolutely love the sauces and crunch topping. They should have an order sheet that you fill out and hand in at the cash register like the downtown location. I ordered half salad and half rice as the base and only got the salad. Makes a big difference as the salad does not fill you up. Unfortunately I only saw this when I got home since they put it in a paper bag when they hand it to you. Small and intimate, when I walked in there was no one else there, but several employees working behind the counter. I was a little bit like a fish out of water, see what I did with that pun!? I have been to other poke places before but this was a little different because instead of being predominantly build your own bowl, they offer combinations that have already been created. I was a bit overwhelmed by the options. So I just went with a medium bowl and ordered a little greens and rice mixture. From there, I said I want the salmon and then I just asked the employee for recommendations. I took her advice and wasn't disappointed. Though, now I have no idea what all I ordered and probably won't be able to order it again. A few notes of things I didn't love: the size of the bowl was rather small in my opinion. There is a larger size, but even that seems a bit smaller than the portion I would expect for $14. Then the only fish options were tuna or salmon and I'm used to a wider selection of fish. The assembling of the bowl does happen in the open, but it isn't like a subway assembly style where you can pick and choose your ingredients as you go. I recognize those are minor gripes so overall, I would definitely say that the food was fresh and tasty. Aloha Poke is pretty much perfection for me! There are now four locations between Chicago & Evanston, but this Lakeview location is closest to home for me. I love that there is a pretty healthy option nearby that is completely customizable to my tastes. The small size is 8 ozs for $7.50 and more than enough food! You can get double the size for just $2 more though, which is hard to pass up. You can even get a Kahuna bowl for $16.50 which is 24 ounces...probably great when dining with another person or two. You then pick white rice, brown rice or greens as your base, then Ahi Tuna, Salmon or Tofu as your Poke (marinated or not), you can then choose 1 of 7 sauces and finally you can pick from a ton of ingredients to top it all with! Too many options? They have three pre-picked bowls to make life easier. But for me, I want what I want! And I love being able to have everything I love in one tasty bowl. Every ingredient is fresh and delicious leading you to a (hopefully) tasty bowl! But really, it's all on your if there's something in there you aren't feeling. The line was a bit long when we arrived, as we were the first couple waiting outside the door. The place was a bit small with not a ton of seating (just a few bar counters and stools), but we managed to grab seats. I think mostly everyone was waiting inside to take out. The employee taking our order was friendly and patient with us first timers. This has the familiar you-pick-your-own-ingredients concept like many other establishments. I did a medium sized Ahi Tuna and Salmon combo, sesame vinaigrette over greens, and almost all the topping ingredients (which did not appear to be an extra charge). I've been to the original location inside the West Loop French Market. I was very exciting to see another one opening in Boystown, near the southwest corner of Clark and Belmont. This one has stool seating, though the space is quite limited. I believe the menu, perhaps the price of each item, are identical to the one in French Market, with choices of fish or protein: naked or marinated ahi tuna, salmon, and tofu; choices of base: white rice, brown rice, and mixed greens. I picked "crunch," another pre-set combination. Here's a tip for you: if you want to "even out" the crunch texture while enjoying your bowl, give a good stir. Otherwise, the jalapeños and tobiko crunch are going to be aggregated on top, and there would only be rice and fish/protein left on the bottom of the bowl. Complementary cucumber water is provided for customers. I did see many people order the "kahuna" size. For $15 I guess you can split this into two (2) meals if you will. The funny thing was I kept on saying "kakuna," like the one in Pokemon. Hubby reminded me not to get so into the game. Venturing this part of Lakeview/Boystown is always fun. I was a bit hesitant because no one was here. It's a small place that most people must use for takeout. There is a bar with chairs at the window where you sit facing the sidewalk for viewing purposes. They did mess up our orders...mixing what I ordered with my daughter's and vice verse. They happily made it right. All the ingredients were very fresh and tasty. There are different size bowls you can get and we were satisfied with the medium size bowl, since it was lunch time. Several regular customers came in while we were eating. One woman eats here 3-4 times/week. As we were traveling throughout Chicago, we did notice other Aloha Restaurants; this this may be a chain. Poke is pretty much like hwe dup bop from Japanese restaurants with the exception of being given your own options for toppings. Overall: As far as take-out options go, Aloha is definitely a solid staple. I can see myself back here time and time again. Yum! The good: Interesting concept that has some lasting promise. The service was friendly and quick. I wouldn't really want to stay and eat at this location, didn't offer much (as most of the Belmont stretch). Definitely get marinated protein.
