Great expectations, Italian has seized the restaurant scene in Cincinnati. Are friends and neighbors have tried here and decided to give it a try. Reservations for a Tuesday evening at 630 for 4. We waited to be seated. 3 tables seated unless otherwise. A well equipped server with more information than you would want before your first drink, and more "... Not exactly sure of the vibe? Saw extremely short shorts and summer fashion.Extremely casual and not all the staff were in uniform or whatever they were. We tried the focaccia with salted butter and olive oil, delicious! The food is very well prepared and very heavy to me. We tried the Rioja @$50 the cheapest option but very delicious. ( Having managed 5 star restaurants I'm not sure about the placement of silverware and removal and replacement that occurred throughout with additional napkins. The server described the menu in great depth. I had the shaved ribeye with sautéed onion, really heavy and lacking sauce. Heavy and I guess it was good but I brought 80% home. My partner had the orrchette pasta with red sauce and fennel sausage, delicious, a friend had clams with shrimp and pasta and he loved it. A friend had the pasta with burrata? Bloob of pasta and sauce with cheese. Spaghetti O.s for $35. The service staff is really trying to hard to be everything but what they should be. Years ago The Celestial tried ha haha tried to be the 5Star gem of the City at the time Maisonette. Al lupo has potential but should not try to clone: Prima Vista, Campenelo, not by a long way, Alfo Buon, you can't compare with it. We were asked if we wanted inside or outside. We asked if there was a view outside and were told yes it's lovely. It's of a parking lot. The weather was lovely so we were still happy with our seating choice. The biggest problem is the service. The younger guy we had was very nice but he couldn't juggle three tables. There were long pauses in between some courses and then others on top of each other. We waited a long time for the bill. We were not asked if we wanted second drinks until after they sat empty for 20 mins. The food. Well it's average. Calamari some bites delish. Some bites fishy. The bread service was our favorite. Way too much arugula in the Brussels salad - was expecting more Brussels less arugula. Main dishes gnocchi with corn was a neon yellow color and had a very odd flavor. Gnocchi was well cooked. Wish they would have had a special but none that night. My husband's spaghetti pasta dish had little flavor. We waited a long time for those entrees. We also waited a long time after they were cleared and instead of asking us for dessert they just gave me a birthday limoncello. Nice touch (but I hate lemon) and we were really looking forward to tiramisu and to see what other desserts were on the menu. We did ask for a tiramisu to go and my husband gave it a B-. I almost forgot about my espresso martini which was some premade drink that they added instant coffee grinds to. Definitely pass on that one. Other tables were getting impatient waiting for their food. And then as we were finally finished paying our bill it was like every table around us got their food no matter when they arrived or ordered. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Al Lupo. The food was amazing, especially the sautéed calamari! The focaccia that's made in house was the perfect accompaniment. Yum! We each also ordered a pasta. Hubby ordered the Garganelli bolognese, and I the linguine vongole e cozze (clams and shrimp) in a white wine sauce. We thoroughly enjoyed both!! We also appreciated the chef who visited tables. We were able to tell him in person how much we enjoyed the meal. Beautiful space with gorgeous views. We dined in a kiln which was a very fun experience for the group. The bread service was fun and i loved the chicken milanese. Our service experience was slow unfortunately, but luckily we had a flexible group and had cleared our schedules for two hour dining experience. The tiramisu is well done and the portion accomodates sharing. It's a nice spot for celebrating an event. Valet parking is $5. read more

It's a 5 star restaurant priced like a 6 star restaurant. Seriously, I have zero complaints about this place. It was a fairly quiet Tuesday, plenty of tables seated, but it was never packed. We split a Caesar, which was delicious, my friend had the spaghetti special, I had the short rib. We had one glass of wine and two beers total. Pre tip was over $140. It's just fully priced. I don't feel like it was too much, but it's certainly not a place you will walk out of and say "wow - they over delivered for the price" The short rib was perfect. When I saw the size of the cut, I was concerned. Really tough to get good short rib this size and also perfectly trimmed, but they nailed it. It was beautifully plated, and the sauce and polenta were exactly complementary to the meat. I love this building. Tons of memories here over the years. Glad it's reopened. We decided to come back and try again and were pleasantly surprised we had a better experience. Becky was our server and she was nothing but kind and genuine. If you go, ask to sit in her section! We were seated in the old kiln- definitely a unique dinner location. I enjoyed my time there, but for the price point, I probably won't return. I tried the pistachio pasta. The sauce was creamy and nutty, a wonderful combination. The pasta was perfectly cooked. When I ordered wine, the waiter misinterpreted which glass I was asking for and brought me a $17 glass versus the $13 glass I had intended to order. The wine was good, and it didn't seem worth bringing up over $4. The bread was good, but $17 for bread is a lot. I would prefer if they had the option of a half order. Haven't been to Rookwood in forever so can't remember exactly what it looked like but bet it has great views with light out I would assume. Our server was Hannah who was super sweet and made sure to come back to tell Us they did get in gorgonzola olives for our martinis Order bread service and like other reviews, get it!! Also, asparagus salads, and a Caesar. The asparagus salad is one of the best salads I've ever had, hands down. Add a protein and I'm good to go. Also ordered the pancetta. Super good but other things outshined. (Asparagus salad) We had rigatoni, linguine genovesse, and the pistachio dish, forget the name. Perfectly cooked pasta and flavor. So hard to get al dente correct but they did. The Genovese was surprisingly my fav. So much flavor. Who thought shaved ribeye would be good in pasta? Food excellent, ambience a solid 4. Early seating since it seemed they're really booked up on weekends. Let you know at the start, it's pricey! It's in the old Rookwood Pottery building. We were seated near the old giant kilns. (You can get a table in the kilns for a larger party) As for ambiance, nothing dazzling. There is a patio that is probably used in warmer weather. But no great views from the restaurant. Nice view of downtown Cincinnati from the parking lot! "Bread service" is their "1,000 yr old starter" 8 pieces of very tasty bread, for $17. Yeh. For bread. Wine, $17 a glass. Really good, but $17-$20 a glass. We split a Caesar salad. The dressing was not quite as creamy as I'm accustomed to, but still had good flavor. The croutons were way too crunchy. Yeh, I know, some folks like them crunchy. But these were VERY crunchy, to the point you couldn't stick them with a fork. And I was seriously concerned about cracking a filling while eating them. Suggestion to Al Lupo, if the waitress suggests splitting a salad, and the customer says they'll take a salad and split it, the restaurant could put it in two plates instead of the customer doing it at the table. Just a suggestion. My wife ordered the lasagna and I ordered the Garganelli Bolognese. Nice size portions. Unfortunately, both dishes seemed bland. Now, I'm not saying they weren't spicy , no, these dishes usually aren't. But it just seemed there was very little flavor to them, almost like the chef forgot the oregano or something. Hate to say it but I've had better. We didn't get dessert so we can't speak for that. We did order coffee. An Americano. Literally scalding hot, but once it cooled down it was really flavorful. Top-notch Italian food is the highlight at Al'Lupo, and the sweeping views of downtown Cincinnati from its Mt. Adams location make it all the more enjoyable. It is located in the old Rookwood pottery building - which gives this restaurant a lot of history! There is a dedicated parking lot and also street parking available. We ordered the bread service- I was curious if the price was worth it. And YES- it was. The bread was phenomenal as well as the premium olive oil and butter that was served along side. They have an extensive wine list as well as a full service bar. We had the Caesar salad- which was served with a Parmesan cracker- the dressing was super flavorful, creamy and just the right amount of salty to make it taste delicious. For the main course we ordered the garganelli bolognese and the bucatini carbonara. Portion sizes were generous. The homemade pasta was yummy. The carbonara sauce was balanced and creamy while the bolognese sauce had a delicious complex flavor. The prices are moderate. Definitely a good addition to dining in the area. read more

We were so excited to try this restaurant, partly because we had our rehearsal dinner at Rookwood Pottery 32 years ago and couldn't wait to revisit. The inside of the restaurant has been redone beautifully! Now, onto the less positive part of the review. Our service was very subpar and the food was not good. My husband ordered the special which he said was just OK and I ordered the short rib which came highly recommended by our server and she even said you could cut it with a spoon because it's so tender. As it wound up, I could not even cut it with a knife! It was super tough and even cold. We had waited close to 40 minutes for our food at this point so then the server asked me if I wanted something else. After 10 minutes of waiting for her to bring back the menu, we flagged down the manager who brought a menu over to me and I ordered the gnocchi. It was just okay - not worth the price tag that they had put on it of $36. I feel like the portion size does not reflect the price tag for their entrées and sides. The people at the table next to us were also very unhappy with their service and their food. I hope they can get it together so that another restaurant does not close down in that space but I'm not sure I will spend my money there again! read more

The Italian spot is in a great spot in my Adams where you aren't fighting for parking . The server was efficient , and knew the menu well . Ambiance and the bones of the old restaurant is still here . They even retired a few private rooms which was nice . However , to the bad. I was there for my birthday dinner and it was just okay . The risotto was over cooked so it was mushy. I had the lamb shank and risotto special . You can almost tell from the photo . Thread was fine , but I really liked the butter. Unfortunately not the best and probably won't be back. It's very hard to compete in the Italian realm and Al Lupo missed the mark for me. 1st: The tables were annoyingly close! When I got up to leave I could barely squeeze out as a slim woman without getting my coat in the next tables food. So it made an intimate dinner feel so odd. The building was beautiful but the set up ruined it. 2nd: Slow. Each course and drinks were very slow. We got a dessert to go because of the pace and even that was slow. Our waiter was good and very kind, but explanation of the menu was incredibly lengthy, we tuned out. That being said-all of our food came out correctly. 3rd: The food was just ok. I got the truffle pasta. Make sure you LOVE truffle. It was rich. My boyfriend got the genovese (rib eye pasta) and said it was also just ok. Everything also seemed overpriced especially compared to high end Italian in the area. TLDR: The building is beautiful, but not enough to overpower just decent food at a high cost with slow service. From the minute you step inside, it doesn't feel like "the new place", it feels like, "Oh good, THIS is where we've always gone for Italian. We just hadn't been told yet." This is Italian cooking with swagger. Respectful of Nonna, yes, but also fully prepared to text her, "Watch this." The bread service, is not there to fill you up; it's there to establish dominance. Warm, crackling crust, soft interior, premium olive oil and butter with actual flavor. You smell toast, butter, and that grassy olive oil and instantly know you're in trouble. One bite and you're mentally composing a breakup speech for your low-carb diet. Guard a piece like it's your Social Security number, you'll want it later to mop up every last drop of sauce. Then comes the Pancetta Tesa, less an appetizer and more a mission statement: a deep-fried block of pork belly on a cloud of polenta with a vivid green ring of pesto. Crispy outside, melting inside, perfumed with smoky pork, sweet corn, and basil. It's the kitchen's way of saying, "Relax. We are absolutely in charge here." The Calamari is that rare thing: perfectly tender, not rubbery, with feather-light breading and just enough salt. First impression are BIG and unfortunately Al'Lupo didn't accomplish a positive first impression. If you go, please let them know in advance you wish to sit in the main dining room, otherwise you could find yourself relegated to the basement with absolutely zero atmosphere compared to the main floor. After waiting about 30 minutes we were finally seated. From a service standpoint, our server was below average. Every time she came to the table she talked so fast that we felt like we were keeping her from doing something else more important. Secondly, she was extremely unfamiliar with the menu and when we inquired about what dishes could be served gluten free, for a member of our party with celiac, she was not knowledgeable about what was or was not gluten free. The food was good which kept the review from being a lower rating. Not bad, good but also not fabulously perfect as the manager asked us about with the annoying leaning in question on the food. Will I go back, maybe but not clamoring to do so. One more point, many commented that there was onsite parking in addition to valet. Not true. Valet takes up the entire parking lot at least on a Saturday night it did. read more

This is one of my very favorite buildings in Cincinnati, so I am so happy it's been reopened as another restaurant. It was difficult to get a reservation since it's new, but it's mostly worth it. The space looks great inside, a nice refresh. The menu is large, but it's spendy. I had the lemon pasta on the seasonal menu, no meat or fish in it, and it was $38. That's a lot of money for just pasta. I also had the Caesar salad and it was very good. I guess I'd consider this a special occasion place, and maybe that's what they're aiming for. We were so excited to get a reservation during the holiday. My childhood friend from Portland would be here. Rookwood is as beautiful as ever! Service was excellent. We both enjoyed our cocktails. The bread itself was good but we did not like the olive oil or butter. I know its crazy but all butter is not created equal in regards to taste and complimenting the bread. We shared a ceasar and the croutons were so hard we found them inedible. We found our food to be fine, not great or highly memorable. My husband and I visited last evening to celebrate our anniversary. We were excited to try this restaurant for the first time--the space looked beautiful and inviting from the outside. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to our expectations. When we arrived, we waited in the lounge for our table and immediately noticed how warm and stuffy it was inside. Even the hostesses were fanning themselves, and they were standing near the door where at least some air circulated. We were seated in a quieter section, which we appreciated, but the tables were placed so close together that it was difficult to get in and out without disturbing other guests. The chairs were comfortable, though. Our waitress was friendly and explained the specials. We ordered cocktails, which arrived quickly and were very good. When she returned to take our appetizer order, she asked if we planned to have salads. We specifically asked whether the salads would come out after the appetizers, and she assured us they would be timed appropriately. My husband ordered a salad, and when I asked whether it was large enough to share, she said yes--so we decided to split one. She then asked if we wanted to place our dinner order as well, and since we already knew what we wanted, we went ahead and gave her our full order: appetizers, salad, and entrées. A few minutes later, the bread service arrived--along with the salad, but without the arancini. This was exactly what we were trying to avoid, but we didn't say anything. The salad was fine but not particularly memorable, and the croutons were so hard they couldn't be cut with a fork. About halfway through the salad, the arancini finally arrived--and they ended up being the highlight of the entire evening. The bread service was okay but very dense and filling; it's something I'd only order again if we were with a larger group. Our entrées came out in a timely manner. I had the Linguini All Genovese, and my husband had the Orreccetta. Both portions were extremely large--easily shareable, though that wasn't mentioned. My linguini was decent: the shaved ribeye was tender, and the pasta was cooked well. My husband's dish, however, was very bland. The sauce tasted like pureed broccoli, and although it was supposed to include sausage, it was hard to find any. Both dishes lacked seasoning, especially garlic, which was disappointing for an Italian restaurant. After our entrées arrived, our waitress became noticeably less attentive. We waited quite a while before she returned to offer boxes and ask about dessert. We ordered the special: lemon-lime honey gelato served over cornbread, along with coffees. A few minutes later, she brought out only the gelato and apologized, saying they were out of cornbread. She hadn't come back beforehand to let us know or ask if we wanted to choose something else. It felt like she set the plate down, apologized, and rushed off before we could respond. We were surprised to see that the full dessert price was still on the bill, despite receiving only part of it. Our coffees arrived after we had already finished the gelato and were lukewarm at best. By the end of the meal, we felt rushed, likely because the restaurant was getting ready to close. For the amount we spent--over $200 before tip--the only standout was the $22 arancini. We really wanted to love this place, but overall, the experience was subpar. She was not helpful at all, we assumed she was busy but the place was not full. The best part was the arancini which was delicious. The baby ears of corn were good as well. Our Orecchiette pasta was average. It had way too much sauce and not enough sausage. My friend had the seafood pasta with clams, mussels and shrimp and it was very good. We ordered the caprese salad and bolognese. The caprese salad should frankly not be hard to mess up. But what we received was 4 cherry tomatoes and a glob of burrata for $22. I wanted to ask for our money back because it was such a disappointment, and I voiced my disappointment to someone, yet afterwards, not a single person came to ask us for feedback, how the food was, etc. nor correct our disappointment. The entire time we were there on opening night, no one asked how the experience was. I want to give the benefit of the doubt bc it was opening night but at the same time, they should be paying extra close attention to people's experiences. After clearing our salad plate and utensils, no one replaced our silverware and no one checked on our table to give us the chance to ask for silverware. The bolognese was fine. We told the waiter we wanted to split the pasta yet, when they served it, they didn't split it into two or even least give us a spoon to divvy up the food. We witnessed other tables get checked in on with the chef or manager, and I believe since we were a young couple, no one cared to ask us how the experience or food was. The wine is apparently not listed in order of dryness from most to least? Confusing. The lighting was very cold throughout the restaurant- a simple change could be made with warmer bulbs. The price point did not match the experience. I was very disappointed but was given no opportunity to try to correct the less than satisfactory experience. I wanted to love it so much. Absolutely incredible. Easily the best restaurant in Cincinnati right now. Pro tip: Get bread service and save some to dip into your Cacciucco. You want the best version of a classic? Get the Buccatini Carbonara. You want something comforting and familiar? The Lasagne is to die for. You want to try something fresh and new? You HAVE to get the Paccheri con Pistacchi. Anywhere else I would pass on the pork chop, not here, the Iberian Tomahawk: Braciola Di Maiale is perfection. From the surprisingly bright and refreshing pickled asparagus and arugula Asparagi Insalate or the earthy goodness of a Funghi Pizza to the decadent chocolate mousse or lemon ricotta cake to the Al Lupo spin on classic cocktails, this menu hits from start to finish.
