James, our server, was personable, properly attentive and knew the menu offerings well. He described them with detailed knowledge and excitement. He happily did separate checks, even splitting the 2 bread services among us. All 7 of us loved the bread service--terrific! It's a 5 star restaurant priced like a 6 star restaurant. Seriously, I have zero complaints about this place. It was a fairly quiet Tuesday, plenty of tables seated, but it was never packed. We split a Caesar, which was delicious, my friend had the spaghetti special, I had the short rib. We had one glass of wine and two beers total. Pre tip was over $140. It's just fully priced. I don't feel like it was too much, but it's certainly not a place you will walk out of and say "wow - they over delivered for the price" The short rib was perfect. When I saw the size of the cut, I was concerned. Really tough to get good short rib this size and also perfectly trimmed, but they nailed it. It was beautifully plated, and the sauce and polenta were exactly complementary to the meat. I love this building. Tons of memories here over the years. Glad it's reopened. My husband and I visited last evening to celebrate our anniversary. We were excited to try this restaurant for the first time--the space looked beautiful and inviting from the outside. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to our expectations. When we arrived, we waited in the lounge for our table and immediately noticed how warm and stuffy it was inside. Even the hostesses were fanning themselves, and they were standing near the door where at least some air circulated. We were seated in a quieter section, which we appreciated, but the tables were placed so close together that it was difficult to get in and out without disturbing other guests. The chairs were comfortable, though. Our waitress was friendly and explained the specials. We ordered cocktails, which arrived quickly and were very good. When she returned to take our appetizer order, she asked if we planned to have salads. We specifically asked whether the salads would come out after the appetizers, and she assured us they would be timed appropriately. My husband ordered a salad, and when I asked whether it was large enough to share, she said yes--so we decided to split one. She then asked if we wanted to place our dinner order as well, and since we already knew what we wanted, we went ahead and gave her our full order: appetizers, salad, and entrées. A few minutes later, the bread service arrived--along with the salad, but without the arancini. This was exactly what we were trying to avoid, but we didn't say anything. The salad was fine but not particularly memorable, and the croutons were so hard they couldn't be cut with a fork. About halfway through the salad, the arancini finally arrived--and they ended up being the highlight of the entire evening. The bread service was okay but very dense and filling; it's something I'd only order again if we were with a larger group. Our entrées came out in a timely manner. I had the Linguini All Genovese, and my husband had the Orreccetta. Both portions were extremely large--easily shareable, though that wasn't mentioned. My linguini was decent: the shaved ribeye was tender, and the pasta was cooked well. My husband's dish, however, was very bland. The sauce tasted like pureed broccoli, and although it was supposed to include sausage, it was hard to find any. Both dishes lacked seasoning, especially garlic, which was disappointing for an Italian restaurant. After our entrées arrived, our waitress became noticeably less attentive. We waited quite a while before she returned to offer boxes and ask about dessert. We ordered the special: lemon-lime honey gelato served over cornbread, along with coffees. A few minutes later, she brought out only the gelato and apologized, saying they were out of cornbread. She hadn't come back beforehand to let us know or ask if we wanted to choose something else. It felt like she set the plate down, apologized, and rushed off before we could respond. We were surprised to see that the full dessert price was still on the bill, despite receiving only part of it. Our coffees arrived after we had already finished the gelato and were lukewarm at best. By the end of the meal, we felt rushed, likely because the restaurant was getting ready to close. For the amount we spent--over $200 before tip--the only standout was the $22 arancini. We really wanted to love this place, but overall, the experience was subpar. Ok, we've had a few new Italian places open lately but this one hit it out of park. Came tonight, fyi, valet parking, but sure there's free somewhere. So cold, don't care. Greeted right when we got in, decent ambiance. Kind of weird entry but seated with our reservation. Haven't been to Rookwood in forever so can't remember exactly what it looked like but bet it has great views with light out I would assume. Our server was Hannah who was super sweet and made sure to come back to tell Us they did get in gorgonzola olives for our martinis Order bread service and like other reviews, get it!! Also, asparagus salads, and a Caesar. The asparagus salad is one of the best salads I've ever had, hands down. Add a protein and I'm good to go. Also ordered the pancetta. Super good but other things outshined. (Asparagus salad) We had rigatoni, linguine genovesse, and the pistachio dish, forget the name. Perfectly cooked pasta and flavor. So hard to get al dente correct but they did. The Genovese was surprisingly my fav. So much flavor. Who thought shaved ribeye would be good in pasta? Food excellent, ambience a solid 4. Early seating since it seemed they're really booked up on weekends. Let you know at the start, it's pricey! It's in the old Rookwood Pottery building. We were seated near the old giant kilns. (You can get a table in the kilns for a larger party) As for ambiance, nothing dazzling. There is a patio that is probably used in warmer weather. But no great views from the restaurant. Nice view of downtown Cincinnati from the parking lot! "Bread service" is their "1,000 yr old starter" 8 pieces of very tasty bread, for $17. Yeh. For bread. Wine, $17 a glass. Really good, but $17-$20 a glass. We split a Caesar salad. The dressing was not quite as creamy as I'm accustomed to, but still had good flavor. The croutons were way too crunchy. Yeh, I know, some folks like them crunchy. But these were VERY crunchy, to the point you couldn't stick them with a fork. And I was seriously concerned about cracking a filling while eating them. Suggestion to Al Lupo, if the waitress suggests splitting a salad, and the customer says they'll take a salad and split it, the restaurant could put it in two plates instead of the customer doing it at the table. Just a suggestion. My wife ordered the lasagna and I ordered the Garganelli Bolognese. Nice size portions. Unfortunately, both dishes seemed bland. Now, I'm not saying they weren't spicy , no, these dishes usually aren't. But it just seemed there was very little flavor to them, almost like the chef forgot the oregano or something. Hate to say it but I've had better. We didn't get dessert so we can't speak for that. We did order coffee. An Americano. Literally scalding hot, but once it cooled down it was really flavorful. Wait staff was good. Our waitress was training someone, so was shadowed. She was good, had decent knowledge of the menu. However, for the prices paid, I cannot say this is a "go to" spot. Top-notch Italian food is the highlight at Al'Lupo, and the sweeping views of downtown Cincinnati from its Mt. Adams location make it all the more enjoyable. It is located in the old Rookwood pottery building - which gives this restaurant a lot of history! There is a dedicated parking lot and also street parking available. We ordered the bread service- I was curious if the price was worth it. And YES- it was. The bread was phenomenal as well as the premium olive oil and butter that was served along side. They have an extensive wine list as well as a full service bar. We had the Caesar salad- which was served with a Parmesan cracker- the dressing was super flavorful, creamy and just the right amount of salty to make it taste delicious. For the main course we ordered the garganelli bolognese and the bucatini carbonara. Portion sizes were generous. The homemade pasta was yummy. The carbonara sauce was balanced and creamy while the bolognese sauce had a delicious complex flavor. The prices are moderate. Definitely a good addition to dining in the area. read more

We were so excited to try this restaurant, partly because we had our rehearsal dinner at Rookwood Pottery 32 years ago and couldn't wait to revisit. The inside of the restaurant has been redone beautifully! Now, onto the less positive part of the review. Our service was very subpar and the food was not good. My husband ordered the special which he said was just OK and I ordered the short rib which came highly recommended by our server and she even said you could cut it with a spoon because it's so tender. As it wound up, I could not even cut it with a knife! It was super tough and even cold. We had waited close to 40 minutes for our food at this point so then the server asked me if I wanted something else. After 10 minutes of waiting for her to bring back the menu, we flagged down the manager who brought a menu over to me and I ordered the gnocchi. It was just okay - not worth the price tag that they had put on it of $36. I feel like the portion size does not reflect the price tag for their entrées and sides. The people at the table next to us were also very unhappy with their service and their food. Unfortunately not the best and probably won't be back. It's very hard to compete in the Italian realm and Al Lupo missed the mark for me. 1st: The tables were annoyingly close! When I got up to leave I could barely squeeze out as a slim woman without getting my coat in the next tables food. So it made an intimate dinner feel so odd. The building was beautiful but the set up ruined it. 2nd: Slow. Each course and drinks were very slow. We got a dessert to go because of the pace and even that was slow. Our waiter was good and very kind, but explanation of the menu was incredibly lengthy, we tuned out. That being said-all of our food came out correctly. 3rd: The food was just ok. I got the truffle pasta. Make sure you LOVE truffle. It was rich. My boyfriend got the genovese (rib eye pasta) and said it was also just ok. Everything also seemed overpriced especially compared to high end Italian in the area. TLDR: The building is beautiful, but not enough to overpower just decent food at a high cost with slow service. Adams block, but it walks into the historic Rookwood Pottery building like it already owns the lease, the liquor license, and half your future date nights. From the minute you step inside, it doesn't feel like "the new place", it feels like, "Oh good, THIS is where we've always gone for Italian. We just hadn't been told yet." This is Italian cooking with swagger. Respectful of Nonna, yes, but also fully prepared to text her, "Watch this." The bread service, is not there to fill you up; it's there to establish dominance. Warm, crackling crust, soft interior, premium olive oil and butter with actual flavor. You smell toast, butter, and that grassy olive oil and instantly know you're in trouble. One bite and you're mentally composing a breakup speech for your low-carb diet. Guard a piece like it's your Social Security number, you'll want it later to mop up every last drop of sauce. Then comes the Pancetta Tesa, less an appetizer and more a mission statement: a deep-fried block of pork belly on a cloud of polenta with a vivid green ring of pesto. Crispy outside, melting inside, perfumed with smoky pork, sweet corn, and basil. It's the kitchen's way of saying, "Relax. We are absolutely in charge here." The Calamari is that rare thing: perfectly tender, not rubbery, with feather-light breading and just enough salt. This is one of my very favorite buildings in Cincinnati, so I am so happy it's been reopened as another restaurant. It was difficult to get a reservation since it's new, but it's mostly worth it. The space looks great inside, a nice refresh. The menu is large, but it's spendy. I had the lemon pasta on the seasonal menu, no meat or fish in it, and it was $38. That's a lot of money for just pasta. I also had the Caesar salad and it was very good. I guess I'd consider this a special occasion place, and maybe that's what they're aiming for. I just wish it was a little more affordable for everyone, so the building could be enjoyed by all! read more

What a great new place! My husband and I came for our anniversary, we were blown away by the space, it is so cool with many interesting things to see- the large kilns, the stain glass windows, beautiful bar. Our service was great and the food was exceptional. The focaccia was incredible. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived, so we ordered a drink at the bar. My wife ordered a cocktail and I ordered a beer. As soon as we received our drinks, our table was ready and I had to hurriedly ask for my bill from the bar and carried our full drinks to our table. The path to our table was between the bar and a large shelf of exposed drink glasses (open to anyone who had to sneeze or cough as they went by)! When we were seated at our table, our waiter came over and gave his narrative of the menu. My wife tasted her cocktail - an Al Lupo Sour- an it smelled like fish (usually of an improperly cleaned glass) I tasted and smelled it and agreed. We let the waiter know and asked him to smell it, which he did and agreed it didn't smell right. He took it back and my wife ordered an Old Fashion. We ordered the 17 dollar "Bread Service" supposedly made in house and a Caprese Salad. Bread was cold and tasteless. Caprese salad was unrecognizable and pretty tasteless. My wife ordered Garganelli Bolognese, which she said was ok. I ordered Linguini All Genovese, which I found sticky and bland! We were rushed through the entire meal and paid the check and left. After our first Visit to Al'Lupo- in their first few weeks Of being open was not what we had expected- Management invited us back to try again. We are so happy that we gave them another try, and our second visit was fantastic- it's clear they have been working on service and have worked through a lot of the " we just opened" snags we experienced the first time. A few high lights- Our second visit, we sat in Dining room B- it is quiet and the tables are more spaced out than in dining room A- B Will definitely always be our preference. Our server was Christina and she was very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. James interacted with us as well, and he also knew his stuff and was eager to help make our experience memorable. I wanted to ask for our money back because it was such a disappointment, and I voiced my disappointment to someone, yet afterwards, not a single person came to ask us for feedback, how the food was, etc. nor correct our disappointment. The entire time we were there on opening night, no one asked how the experience was. I want to give the benefit of the doubt bc it was opening night but at the same time, they should be paying extra close attention to people's experiences. After clearing our salad plate and utensils, no one replaced our silverware and no one checked on our table to give us the chance to ask for silverware. The bolognese was fine. We told the waiter we wanted to split the pasta yet, when they served it, they didn't split it into two or even least give us a spoon to divvy up the food. We witnessed other tables get checked in on with the chef or manager, and I believe since we were a young couple, no one cared to ask us how the experience or food was. The wine is apparently not listed in order of dryness from most to least? Confusing. The lighting was very cold throughout the restaurant- a simple change could be made with warmer bulbs. The price point did not match the experience. I was very disappointed but was given no opportunity to try to correct the less than satisfactory experience. I wanted to love it so much. Absolutely incredible. Easily the best restaurant in Cincinnati right now. Pro tip: Get bread service and save some to dip into your Cacciucco. You want the best version of a classic? Get the Buccatini Carbonara. You want something comforting and familiar? The Lasagne is to die for. You want to try something fresh and new? You HAVE to get the Paccheri con Pistacchi. Anywhere else I would pass on the pork chop, not here, the Iberian Tomahawk: Braciola Di Maiale is perfection. From the surprisingly bright and refreshing pickled asparagus and arugula Asparagi Insalate or the earthy goodness of a Funghi Pizza to the decadent chocolate mousse or lemon ricotta cake to the Al Lupo spin on classic cocktails, this menu hits from start to finish. The atmosphere was awesome. Super cool building. However we had a 6:45 reservation and didn't get seated until 7:20 as a party of 2. We ordered a drink each and bread service which I don't mind paying for if it's truly worth it but it was very overpriced and nothing spectacular. The bread service came out 5 min before our drinks. I think we waited 15 -20 min for drinks but I understand they are new and working kinks out. The drinks were fine. I got the carbonara it was good. My friend got the ribeye pasta dish and it was also good but nothing spectacular. We got the asparagus salad which I loved. And the butter cake was very very average. Super hard on the outside and not super moist on the inside. When we told our server our opinion on the cake after she asked multiple times she said "yeah that's how a butter cake is " I'm not sure but it just felt kind of condescending even if she didn't mean to. All in all the meal was fine just not worth close to $200 for being in Cincinnati and not comparable to other high end Italian in the area. read more

We celebrated our anniversary at Al Lupo and had such a wonderful experience. The service was truly impeccable from start to finish and made the night feel extra special. The building itself is stunning. They did an incredible job honoring the historic Rookwood Pottery while seamlessly working the restaurant into the space. Everything we had was delicious, the vibe was perfect for a celebration or date night, and you absolutely should not skip the bread starter. Highly recommend for anyone in Cincinnati looking for a memorable meal. read more
