In terms of a radio station, it's awesome that they are playing eclectic music on FM. There is a wide array of content, from all walks of life. The owner is awesome, and should be commended for his efforts and making this place a reality. In terms of a volunteer organization, it absolutely fails. I volunteered there for several years, and found it to be very cliquey. Aside from one or two people, volunteers with more seniority make zero attempt to make you feel welcome, resulting in a high turnover of enthusiastic new members who stop coming after a few times. No one introduces themselves. Countless times I'd walk in to the station to be un-greeted, and looked over with apathy and indifference. It was so palpable at times, that it killed my enthusiasm and made me leave. Most of the contact between volunteers is done through email and Slack, a cloud-based collaboration tool. All of the regulars are quick to respond to one another, pat themselves on the back, and quick to tell you when you're doing something wrong, but if you have a question, they literally never, ever get back to you, unless they need something from you. That's the reason new people don't stick around, and that's the reason I left. Actual face-to-face meetings felt like a cool kids table. If you are a self-motivated, DIY kinda person who wants to have a radio show, you are certainly given the tools to get you there. If you want to feel like you a part of a community, you are ranked based on age, melanin, and genitalia. There's a lot of younger volunteers who pollute the meetings seeming to care nothing about music, professionalism, egalitarianism, and instead want to wear a provocative t-shirt and push their political agendas and SJW ideologies. Literally, the biggest safe space banner you will ever see hangs on the wall as a constant reminder that you're only welcome in this spot, if you fit the criteria. People went out of their way to make me feel unwelcome. A few times I was working in the station during a new member orientation, listening to the organizer with ill-fitted attire and a water bottle with an Antifa sticker say "like" every other word, and repeatedly making it clear that they don't want "bands with like, all white guys, like, playing shows here". No one is there to reprimand this unprofessional behavior, resulting in less than 1/10 of the new volunteers each meeting sticking around more than a few weeks. I suppose in defense of H.E.R., you're only as good as your volunteer base. I hope some fresh faces with outgoing personalities really clean up the place, but you'll, like, have the cards, like, stacked against you.

Bay Area music radio sucks. To a certain extent, most music radio sucks these days, but when you…read morecompare the Bay Area's selection of stations (corporate, college, NPR, etc.) to, say, what you can hear in L.A. County, it's not even close--L.A. wins every time. I grew up and went to college in L.A. County, and I spent way more time driving and, thus, listening to the radio in the 1990s and very early 2000s than I do in the Bay Area. Put another way, when I lived in Southern California, I had radio presets on my car. I've lived in San Francisco since 2003 and have had three cars over that time, and I've never bothered with radio presets, because aside from KQED, KALW, and KPFA (none of which are really music stations), it's generally not worth listening to the radio for music here. Until 2024, that is. I was running errands for an upcoming weekend trip, and I happened upon 92.7 FM, which is technically KEXC but which is just a repeater of 90.3 KEXP in Seattle. Whatever show I caught was really cool and eclectic, a combination of a college-radio station and Santa Monica's KCRW. The music was familiar and new at the same time, and the DJ sounded like a very polished college DJ. Over the next few months, I continued to listen to KEXP whenever I drove, and then, when I wasn't driving as much, I started streaming it. It's an amazing station with a long, interesting history in Seattle. Its current iteration is nonprofit, but it's not an NPR affiliate, as far as I can tell, and while it is still somehow connected to the University of Washington, it's not purely owned by the university. If they play anything other than music, I've never heard it. Not all the shows are the same, and some DJs are more interesting than others, but it's generally worth listening to at any time of the day. They have some Bay Area sponsors and ads as well, and while I generally abhor ads, most of them are for small businesses both here and in Seattle, so it feels like real community radio.

Somehow they got my last review deleted. So I guess I'll…read moretype up another one. I emailed Joe, the owner of Orbit Audio. I requested 4 weeks in advance to have a spot booked up. I messaged back and forth with the audio engineer he assigned. As a side note, I flew from San Francisco, CA to Seattle, WA to record with them. 3 days before hand, they told me I was still good to go for the session. With about 16 hours before my session they cancelled on me telling me they had booked someone else and couldn't take me in. As a musician of 25+ years, they treated me like a 'second rate' musician. So let me tell you this. If you're an indie artist, DO NOT go here. They cancelled on me just to get a couple more hours of time booked. A little bit of extra money in their pockets. They didn't take into account that I had spent the previous 4 weeks non-stop preparing for the session, just to cancel on me with less than 24 hours notice. These are audio engineers, not artists or musicians. They simply do not care about anything other than the money in their pockets. When I was told I was cancelled, they tried to get me to go to another location at one of their audio engineers house. Please tell me how if I'm looking at paying anywhere between $500-$1,000 for a day of recording and mastering that I would want to go to someones house to record. They will rush you and attempt to take advantage of you. Stay away from here. P.s. If you don't believe me, here's a screenshot from the owner apologizing forgetting to book me. The venue is stunning -- full of majestic arches, ornate architectural details, elegant balconies, and a grand old-theater atmosphere that immediately makes the evening feel special. Even before the performance starts, you already feel like you're having a real night out rather than just attending a show. The massive multi-tiered seating area is very impressive, yet the acoustics still felt excellent and immersive throughout the performance. One thing we especially enjoyed was spending time outside beforehand looking through the illuminated displays and posters for upcoming productions. It really builds anticipation and adds to the magical atmosphere of the evening. Whether you are seeing Phantom of the Opera or another performance, the Paramount feels like one of those classic theaters that turns an event into a memorable experience.

Unfortunately, this was one of the worst theater etiquette experiences I've ever had. During the first act, a man seated behind us repeatedly sang along during the performance. When I politely asked him to stop, the person next to him sarcastically pointed at the stage and said, "The show is over there," while the behavior continued. Around us, multiple people talked throughout songs and scenes, and later in the evening I even saw someone openly filming the show on an iPhone. I eventually had to leave my seats (Main Floor 2, Row G) and speak to management because the disruptions were so bad I couldn't focus on the performance. The only solution offered was seats in the very back of the orchestra. By that point, the experience was already frustrating enough that it took a while to calm down and enjoy the show again. What's most disappointing is that this is the SECOND time I've experienced terrible audience behavior at this theater. I previously saw Back to the Future here and dealt with nonstop talking during that performance too. I attend theater regularly in Southern California at Segerstrom Center for the Arts and also frequently see shows in New York City. Ushers there actively monitor audience behavior and quickly shut down disruptions. At the Paramount, it felt completely unmanaged. For the prices being charged -- around $350 for my tickets through Ticketmaster -- audience members should not have to deal with talking, singing, and filming throughout a Broadway performance. Amazing production. Extremely disappointing theater management and audience control.
