Listen, Mike Alleva is a legitimate crook. There is absolutely no reason why a homeowner should rely on them to perform a service of any kind, particularly one of a larger scale remodel. His staff unfortunately follows his lead, even begrudgingly, characterizing this business as having no integrity whatsoever. The most immoral, unethical behavior of the events, is the following. We were elevating the ceiling height in our enclosed front porch. Above the dropped ceiling was space similar to an attic, and the intent was to eradicate the unused attic-like space and raise the ceiling for aesthetic purposes. During the estimate, the project manager moved a ceiling tile, examined and measured, and said the current existing support was more than sufficient for the project, and proper for code purposes. Fast forward several months to the actual construction, the ceiling was demo'd, and then Mike calls and says that he needs to rebuild the rafters. I told him they were thoroughly examined already. He then raised his voice, belligerent and aggressive, and like a thief in the night says that I have two choices - I can either choose to stop construction and cause a significant & timely delay while we await inspections, or I can pay $3000 for one day's work of exchanging the rafters. So, I watched them remove perfectly fine construction, just so they could rob me. His project manager knew it, his office assistant knew it, his crew knew it. he knew it, and we knew it. And it was unscrupulous, despicable, and an entirely sleazy way of squeezing money from good people. I hate to be stereotypical, and hindsight is 20/20 but it added up in the end when I remembered Mike showed up in a $100k car and $200 jeans to give a hardworking family an estimate on modifying their home, one that he ultimately inevitably disregarded for the sake of his own benefit and meager financial gain. I could, but I will not respond point-by-point because it's unnecessary and won't change the reality, the workmanship is poor and our experience with Alleva was atrocious. However, you are mistaken or lying about the asbestos. I will not include names here, but your project manager told your employee, while he was at our house, to keep demoing after that employee expressed concern about the wall & tiles. In a house built in the 1950's, your demo-guy was smart to consider the real possibility of asbestos and your project manager did absolutely tell him not to worry and to keep going. Needless to say, the employee who was worried about asbestos was soon pulled from our job. I hope he's ok. By the way, we used our qualified/licensed asbestos remediation service and not yours because yours wanted $1000 more for the job. And lastly, why would I call to "berate" anyone there, why would I threaten to stop the work, and why would you be compensating/crediting us and giving us discounts unless you knew you did wrong? Your own response is an admission of wrongdoing. Maybe you've done well by other people but you thoroughly dropped the ball with us. And your plea when you called that you're a family operation--so are we. My husband is a healthcare professional who worked tirelessly in the hospital at the beginning of Covid (and volunteered to work extra in the ER, as thousands were dying) until he was diagnosed with cancer, underwent a bone marrow transplant, and returned immediately to work as soon as he was able. Too bad so much of our hard earned time and money was spent dealing with Alleva's bs. And you did reach out AFTER I posted my review but you did nothing BEFORE when I emailed/texted about every other issue of which there are too many to even list in this review. I suspect you label any dissatisfied customer as "difficult," but a poor worker blames his clients. read more

Very happy with our kitchen renovation. My wife and I have been homeowners for about 20 years and have had many projects over that span. This project was, by far, the most organized from start to finish and the work looks great. I've gotta give it to Dawn and Domingo for making things right (these two deserve a raise). Every project has its bumps in the road and ours came in the form of our "former, not to be named" project manager....In short, that's where Dawn comes in...I called the office several times and she made things right. Domingo was assigned as our new project manager and he was great. Communication was fantastic. *It looks as though Mike (Alleva) reads these reviews, so I wanted to first off recognize these two for keeping things together. I'll try to break down the project now: Getting the estimate: I recall Mike came within a day or two, drew up the designs, we headed down to Hackensack and agreed upon a contract/plan. *my advice to anyone before agreeing on a price would be to understand the material you will be credited. For example, we were credited about $50/sq ft for counter tops, but the counter tops we wanted and eventually got were priced at about $99/ sq ft...so, that will be extra money paid out of pocket in addition to the contract. On the flip side of that, we decided to NOT go with the 4 inch counter top "back splash", we we were given a credit for that... I feel as though Alleva was transparent about everything....No hidden costs! The crew: The first day the guys came in for demo, They actually took their shoes off to set up the drop cloths to protect other parts of the house....this impressed the wife...they scored an A+ right there. Everyone from the electricians, plumbers, flooring, cabinetry guys...very respectful and we have nothing bad to say about them. The work: Everything looks great... couldn't be happier. Last, but not least, they are not done until the consumer is happy. We had a few minor touch ups here and there and they had a crew come out to to address these issues (even after inspections). Oh...and the financing they provide is very convenient. We could've paid for the project in another manner but took advantage of the financing provided....that put a little extra money in our pocket to get things done elsewhere. I would, without a doubt, recommend Alleva construction for any home project...and we are looking forward to our next bathroom project. read more

We recently hired Alleva to redo our kitchen. The project was a pretty big project involving significant pipe and electrical rerouting, as well as removing a major support wall. The quality of workmanship and professionalism should be highly commended. They did everything that was agreed to and also took care some minor issues that came up during the renovation. Jake Alleva (Son) was our business contact and he did fantastic job in keeping us updated and making sure that the work was being performed correctly. Domingo and Carlos were the lead guys doing most of the work and they did a fantastic job in making sure that everything got done correctly. I should give you a heads up though..In a big project like this, you should expect some hiccups and delays (as our project was delayed quite a bit due to some unforeseen issues) and make sure that you plan ahead. But even during the delay, Jake and the Alleva team did the best they could to address all my questions and concerns and eventually got the job done. Also, after the renovations were finished, we had a couple of minor adjustments that needed to be made..I texted Jake and the issue was taken care of the following week. Great work replacing a front storm door and rear screen door. Dawn, my phone contact was friendly and polite, not pressuring me for a quick commitment when I first called. Arnold, who did the work was polite, professional and cleaned up afterward. I was surprised how quickly they were able to come in once the doors had been delivered (next day!). Let me start by saying the end product was almost what we were looking for. 20 months ago Alleva Construction finished remodeling my upstairs bathroom - would be considered small - and it took 16 weeks! 3 different project managers, mistakes on design (one we accepted since it option 2 in our shower), sloppy work that was tried to pass as correct, and days where workers never showed up. Not to mention additional charges during demolition to upsell joist corrections to make sure nothing goes wrong in the future. Let's fast forward 20 months. My living room ceiling started leaking water because the shower pan that was installed had holes in it. Water has been building up causing damage for 20 months!!!! Now my family room, living room, and new bathroom is out of commission and demoed. When I reached out to Alleva Construction I was told they couldn't do anything since the warranty expired after 12 months. I asked for the plumbing subcontractors who did the work so I could reach out and I was told "No, but we could send someone out to give you an estimate". Any reputable company who cares about their reputation and their customers would attempt to make this right. Instead I was given the "middle finger". I would never recommend this company to anyone. Shady, misleading, untrustworthy, and unprofessional are some of the words I would describe this company. Stay away from them. read more

Alleva Construction is a company that puts profits over clients' needs, comfort, and satisfaction. Their lack of empathy is nothing short of chilling. Here are the facts: 1. The initial quote is only the beginning: At the end of the very first day of demolition and with not even a whiff of a warning about potential complications, they indicated that further work needed to be done if I wanted my only bathroom to look good. This increased the amount in the original contract by 43 percent. They explained I had "a choice," paying the additional money or having a flawed final product, such as uneven walls. After that further charges were added, making the total cost to rise to more than 70 percent over the amount stipulated in the contract. The contractor had previously worked in a bathroom in my co-op that included partial demolition and therefore knew what the work entailed. There was a precedent they did not mention or acknowledge. 2. Permits: Alleva also charges an "administrative fee" for soliciting the various permits needed from the town. Although at the time of the contract I was told that this was a negligible expense, when the bill came it was for nearly $600. I asked for an explanation. I was told that the permits themselves cost $310, and Alleva charges $250 on top of that because of the work involved, such as a drawing. I wish I could share with you the so-called drawing, which vividly illustrates their contempt for this particular job. 3. Financing: Think twice before signing any applications for financing. Although at first it may look like a good deal, when you get the first statement you will not only have trouble recognizing the terms of the financing that will allow you to avoid paying interests, but also find out that the bank charges an "activation fee." When I complained, the bank told me that the fee goes to the merchant. When I talked to Alleva, they first claimed they knew nothing about the activation fee, but later admitted there is such a fee, except it's the bank that benefits from it. 1. The fact that I was unable to ascertain who gets the fee is a problem in and of itself. Another is that Alleva made no attempt to clear their name. 4. Delays: The project, which was initially expected to take 3-5 weeks to complete, dragged on for 14 weeks. I was without a shower for 86 days and without a toilet for about two weeks. When I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau about the delays, they responded with all kinds of excuses. When the time finally came to install a shower, the opening on the wall was too high for the hand-held shower I had purchased from the very beginning. I had to exchange it for an expensive combo shower. The contractor charged me not only for the additional work, but also for the plumber's second visit. A third visit was required because the screws for the shower valve did not work. No one showed up the day when the last details had to be taken care of, so I did the work myself just to get this mess over with. 5. Final comments: This company operates with no transparency and complete impunity. Part of the problem is that no one is really on top of the project. I often did not know what was going on or if the workers would show up to do some work. There were entire days, at times subsequent days, with no action and no news. The contractor did not ever show up to see how the work was going or asked about client satisfaction, not once. At times, I was asked to follow up with the workers or make arrangements for the delivery of materials. I write this review in the hope that it will spare other people the pain, frustration, stress, and impotence I have endured. Their strategy is to lay things out in the contract in such a way that you'll think everything will be taken care of. Scrutinize the contract with someone familiar with this type of document and with construction, read between the lines, sleep on it, compare it to others. Be sure to demand, in writing, what additional work, if any, may be involved and how much it might cost. Also, let them spell out what has not been included. Carefully study the terms of payment and do not agree to paying a large percentage of the balance before they have completed the job. You will pay dearly for all the "extras," such as door and shower saddles (not essential items, it seems, as they were left out of the contract), or for having the plumber show up more than once. Since their approximate timing is so elastic as to be meaningless, insist on a timeline before signing the contract. If you decide to go with Alleva despite all of the above, at least do not let my nightmare go to waste. read more

Worst experience of our life. Before the contract was signed Mike would always call or even stop by the house. After they started the project, that's when the nightmare begin. Our project was suppose to be finish within 5 to 9 weeks. It's now 19 weeks and the electrician is scheduled to come out because they can't seem to pass the final inspection. We took our chance to hire Alleva because my wife believe in supporting local businesses. That was a big mistake. I told her that the owner Mike had no respect. I just listen to the way he speak about our home. His son, Jake Alleva is even WORSE. Uneducated and ignorant. This kid literally told us that our floors were crap, without even coming out to see them. And he refuse to continue unless we pay them an additional $6000. Remind you, they were scheduled to collect over $42,000 from us. But somehow that didn't seem enough for them. They try to charge us extra for plumbing, electrical, flooring and drywall. We have young kids and we had to spend the entire summer without a kitchen and they didn't care. I am a area manager and there is NO way any of our employees would be allowed to treat a homeowner the way Alleva treated us. It was insulting. It was devastating seeing my wife CRY because of the lack of respect they showed us. When it was time for us to pick out our countertop we heard that ALLEVA PICKED OUT THE ONE THEY THINK WE SHOULD GET. They did not even show it to us. We had to contact the Better Business Bureau in order to have them finish the project. After they get the money, they disappeared. After they finish installing the kitchen sink it WOULD not drain because they left the pipe open throughout the entire project. They refused to fix it. I had to take apart everything they did and snake it out. The heaters they installed in the kitchen did not work. I did some inspection of my own. Only to realize that they didn't have any electric going to the junction box. They came out to address the issue but they only made it worse. Instead of using a separate breaker, they put the two heaters in the kitchen on the same breaker as the other two heaters in the bed rooms. So now every time I turn the heaters on the breaker trip. Remind you, it's getting cold; with no heater in the kids room either. This have to be the worse experience of our life. There are so much more that happen. The project started June 4, 2016 and today is October 21, 3016 and they still can't pass final inspection. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE. read more

Do NOT waste your time with Alleva Construction. The staff is inefficient and the "project manager" never came out once to physically see the job, therefore was not able to understand specific issues. Mike, the owner, takes no responsibility for his business after he accepts your check. You are literally not allowed to speak with him. A simple one and a half bathroom renovation, that was under contract for 4-6 weeks, took TEN weeks, simply because Alleva does not know how to properly manage a job. They are also constantly looking to make more money once the project starts. There are plenty of other contractors that are less expensive, more knowledgeable, have respect for their clients and MUCH less frustrating to deal with. read more

Worst experience with a contractor EVER! Paid top dollar for a widened driveway, new apron and public sidewalks, private sidewalk and front stairs. Stairs and driveway came out OK but the apron and sidewalks came out aweful. The overall slabs are uneven with bumps and depressions, the borders of the sidewalks were made so deep they left blobs of cement which they then attempted to sand down leaving dark spots on the white concrete, and the seams between slabs are crooked. And the apron they did was just indescribable. The workers clearly were inexperienced and there was never anyone on site to supervise. In fact, on one occasion my husband heard them joking about who would be the boss that day. And to add insult to injury they left a mess which included drill batteries in my garden and a 1x2 ft. blob of dried concrete on my front lawn, none of which got cleaned up until I contacted them. No one had a clue as to how bad the job was done or the mess that was left because no one in charge ever showed up to see it until I said something! Basically a blind man could see how bad the work was. I've actually searched for sidewalks that look worse so maybe I would feel better and have yet to find any. When I complained the owner told be that they were 'non structural surface imperfections' and he understood my frustration. It always makes me feel better when my contractor feels my pain! I will say that after the apron curb FAILED inspection he did redo the horrific apron and 4 slabs of public sidewalk (or should I say he subcontracted someone to do it) which came out beautiful making his original work look even worse...which I never would have imagined was possible. The difference in the quality of the work is so obvious you can see it from across the street. You just know it's bad when, after you spent a buttload of money, you wish you had your 50+ year old sidewalks back. Now every time I walk out my front door I want to cry! The young lady was very polite and very knowledgeable and made the initial phone call very pleasant. I called interested in remodeling my office and had a few ideas but also interested in seeing what a professional would recommend. The very next afternoon I had a project manager in my office named Ken who was very nice and very creative. He did an excellent job of bringing my ideas to life combined with a modern touch. Had a leaking chimney in a very old house that was coming through a back bedroom wall. The owner did the estimate and found the source of the leak right away. The price was fair and he sent one of his mason guys the following week - the leak was fixed and after a good rain, they came back to patch and repaint the bedroom.
